At the outset, Dr. Ashutosh Dixit, Chairman, Department of Environmental Sciences
and BOS warmly welcomed all the members of the newly constituted Board of
Studies. The Chairman appreciated the interest and the presence of outside
members who took pain to attend this meeting for the healthy discussion on the
development of the department.
Earlier, all the Science streams (Physics, chemistry, Maths and Environmental
Sciences were part of Department of Humanities and Sciences. Effective August,
2018, the streams have been constituted as separate departments and this is the
first BOS meeting after its inception as Department of Environmental Sciences.
The Agenda Items taken up and after detailed deliberation/discussion, the following decisions were taken.
EVS/BOS/01/01: To consider and approve the minutes of DRC meeting held on 3 3rd June, 2019 in the office of Chairman EVS.
Minutes of the DRC meeting held on 3 June, 2019 were circulated to all the
members. The members confirmed and approved the minutes.
EVS/BOS/01/02: To consider and approve the list of open electives offered by the department.
The department is already offering two open electives 1) Environment Conservation 2) Waste Management in Daily Life. Three more open elective courses
were proposed to offer to UG and PG students of University (attached as Annexure
A)
1. Energy And Environment
2. Environmental Legislation And Policies
3. Solid Waste Management
The board approved the open electives with minor modification in the syllabus. Some may offered in odd semester and some may be in even semester.
EVS/BOS/01/03: To consider and approve the list of examiners for B.Tech and MSc
Environmental Sciences.
The board approved the list of examiners for the subjects Environmental Sciences,
Biology and Life Science in 8Tech programme and MSc Environmental Sciences
attached as Annexure B). The same list may be considered as examiners for the
open elective courses offered by the department. The board also gives the authority to the chairperson to add the suitable names of the examiners as and when required.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. The course intends to introduce the students to the vast field of Legislation and
Policies both at the national and international level relating to environment. 2. The students will be given an insight into major acts and rules applicable for pollution
control as well as natural resource conservation. 3. At the end of the course it is expected that the students will be equipped with the
skills needed for interpreting laws, policies and judicial decisions about the
environnment.
UNIT I:
Environmental Pollution: Issues, challenges and response at national and international level
(climate change, biodiversity, ozone layer depletion), Stockholm Convention, Earth Summit, Vienna convention & Montreal Protocol, UNFCCC & Kyoto Protocol, Swachh Bharat
Abhiyan, Ganga Action Plan, Yamuna Action Plan.
UNIT II:
Constitutional Provisions relating to Environmental protection in India [Article 48A and 51
A(], Introduction, salient features, latest amendments and drawbacks of the following acts:
Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974; Water Cess Act, 1977; Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 and amendments; Environmental
(Protection) Act, 1986; The Biological Diversity Act, 2002, Public Liability Insurance Act,
1991.
UNIT II: National Green Tribunal Act, 2010; Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, Plastic
Waste Management Rules, 2016, E-Waste Management Rules, 2016; Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016; Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary
Movement) Rules, 2016; Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules, 2016.
UNIT IV:
IA and environmental Preparing environmental management system for an organization, ElA and environ audit, ElA notification, 2006 and amendments thereof.Ecomark Scheme.
COURSE OUTCOMES:
After completing this course, the students will be able to: 1. Understand environmental legislation and policies of national and international regime. 2. Know regulations applicable to industries and other organizations with significant environmental aspects. . Apply the legislation concepts for solving the local environmental problems. 4. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
I. The course will provide the basic knowledge of solid waste in terms of characteristics
and composition. 2. The students will get the knowledge of legal, institutional and financial aspects of
management of solid wastes with a focus on special categories of solid waste.
3. The students will become aware of environmental and health impacts of solid waste
management. 4. Further, the course will provide the understanding of engineering, financial and
technical options for waste management.
UNIT -I:
Solid wastes: Definition, types, sources, classification and composition of solid waste, and
impact on environmental health. Collection and storage of municipal solid wastes.
Concepts of waste reduction, recycling and reuse, Recycling of household and commercial
waste, recycling of paper, recycling of plastics.
UNIT - I1:
Solid waste processing technologies, Buning, open dumping - problems, Incineration,
Combustion, Stabilization, Solidification, chemical fixation, encapsulation, Composting,
Vermicomposting, Energy from waste.
Landfill - Sanitary and secured structure, design,construction, operation and
closure.Landfill leachate and gas management.
UNIT II:
Hazardous waste: Definition, sources, classification, collection, segregation, characterization,
Treatment and disposal.
Radioactive wastes: Definition, sources, classification, collection, segregation, Treatment and
disposal.
E waste: Definition, sources, classification, collection, segregation, Treatment and disposal.
Biomedical wastes: Definition, sources, classification, collection, segregation, Treatment and
disposal.
UNIT- IV:
Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000, 2016 and amendments if any,
Biomedical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2016; Plastic Waste Management
Rules, 2016; E-Waste Management Rules, 2016; Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules,

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The course will provide the students a fair understanding of various energy resources, energy
situation, energy production, utilization and the impacts on environment, environment
protection, techniques/devices to protect the environment due to pollution arising out of use
of various energy resources, global warming, climate change and mitigation measures.
Further, the student will have a broad view of energy and environment policy of India. They
will get the knowledge on principles, technologies and economics of bio-energy for energy
and environmental conservation.

Energy use pattern in India and world, Emission of CO2 in developed and developing
countries including India, Radiative forcing and global warming.Fossil fuel- classification,
composition, Physico-chemical characteristics and energy content of coal, petroleum and
natural gas, Gross calorific value and net calorific value.Environmental implications of
energy use, Environmental impacts of burning coal.
UNIT 2:
Renewable energy resources, Principles of generation of hydropower, Principles of
generation of tidal energy, Principles of generation of ocean thermal energy conversion,
Principles of generation of geothermal ener8y, Principles of generation of wind power, Basic
components, types and applications of wind energy.
Sun as a source of energy, Solar radiation and its spectral characteristics, Principles of

On completion of the course, the students will be able to: Acquire scientific and technical understanding on the energy and associated environmental issues. Get acquainted with the environmental impacts of energy technologies. Understand the necessity to go for alternative energy and potential for bioenergy and methods to explore the energy in biological mode. EVS/DRC/01/01: To consider registration of Ms. Heena Chauhan admitted in
August 2018 and successfully completed pre-PhD course work.
The committee confirmed the registration of Ms. Heena Chauhan with the presented
Synopsis. The same were recommended and forwarded to BOS for further approval.
EVS/DRC/01/02: To consider the half yearly Progress report of the following PhD
candidates:
