Inspired by Maruzza’s energy and strength, the Maruzza Foundation’s “Midnight Sun” symbol represents the fading light of a life. It is a reflection of what we have been, the warmth we need. It is an eternal radiance in the dark of night.

The mAruzzA foundATionSilversea is proud to support the Maruzza Foundation and to honour the memory of Maruzza, the

beloved sister of Manfredi Lefèbvre D’Ovidio, Silversea’s Chairman. She was just forty years old when

she passed away in 1989. During the long months of her illness, she came to realise the enormous

difficulties faced by others like herself and expressed a desire to provide help and support for the

terminally ill and their families.

To bring Maruzza’s dream to light, the Lefèbvre family established the Fondazione Maruzza Lefebvre

D’Ovidio Onlus in 1999 to improve the quality of life for incurable patients while respecting their

personal dignity and individual values. Over the years the Maruzza Foundation has made a substantial

contribution in the arena of public healthcare, and in recognition of its contributions, received the

Gold Medal of Merit in 2013 by decree of the President of the Republic of Italy.

Today, the Maruzza Foundation is focused on the diffusion of palliative care for children with life-

limiting and life-threatening illness. For these young patients in particular, it is essential that they

spend the precious time left to them free of pain and suffering, and in familiar surroundings where

all of their physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs can be properly addressed.

from cure To cAreOUR COMMITMENTThe Maruzza Foundation strives to ensure effective palliative care and pain management for those who

suffer. In order to guarantee excellence in care delivery, we support training and research programmes,

promote and disseminate new scientific evidence, and work to raise public awareness.

We are accompanied by extraordinary men and women — doctors, researchers, policy makers,

scientists, nurses, carers, family members and patients. They are by our side, supporting those affected

by incurable illness and ensuring a better quality of life for the entire family regardless of the patient’s

age, cultural, social and economic background.

ChIldREN aRE OUR pRIORITyOur goal is to help children with life-limiting illness as well as their families live as normal a life as

possible. We therefore strive to implement sustainable policies for paediatric palliative care and pain

management services capable of meeting the individual needs of children of all ages.

CaRE fOR ThE EldERly Another key aim of the Maruzza Foundation is to improve the quality of life of older people by promoting

services that address their complex requirements. The Foundation works with other national and

international organisations and scientific societies to help educate and influence policy makers to

ensure the development and implementation of effective solutions. Meeting the needs of our aging

populations is an urgent public health priority and a major challenge for the future.

EvERy ChIld dEsERvEs pallIaTIvE CaREIt is estimated that some 20 million children around the world

suffer from incurable diseases. however in many countries,

provision of palliative care is at best limited, and at worst

non-existent. Parents may need to travel long distances to

access services, and hospices for children are still rare. This

in spite of the fact that providing flexible, holistic healthcare

and support reduces the pain and suffering of this vulnerable

population — and at significantly lower costs.

The Maruzza Foundation and the Children’s Palliative

Care network (ICPCn) share the vision of a world where

palliative care is available to every child who needs it.

In 2014 they formed the Awareness Alliance, a collaboration

to raise awareness, lobby for the global development of

family-centred paediatric palliative care services, and share

expertise, knowledge and skills.

The alliance was launched during the opening ceremony

of the 2nd Congress on Paediatric Palliative Care in Rome.

It was presented to an audience of over 430 global

palliative care practitioners with the following mission —

to achieve the best quality of life possible for children

with life-limiting diseases and their families, no matter

where they live.

goAls And objecTivesRaIsE awaRENEss aNd COMMUNICaTION There is a profound lack of awareness and knowledge about palliative care and pain management

that impedes the implementation and access to effective programmes. There are also numerous

cultural barriers that hinder the organisation of appropriate services. The Maruzza Foundation works

to disseminate information and promote knowledge through national and international events,

congresses, conventions, workshops and public awareness campaigns.

TRaININg Quality palliative care depends upon quality training. The Maruzza Foundation sponsors palliative

care education and specific skills training for healthcare professions in both the paediatric and

geriatric sectors.

REsEaRChThere is an imperative need for the research and development of new healthcare models and

practices to bridge gaps in palliative care and pain management. The Maruzza Foundation promotes

and actively participates in national and international evidence-based studies for the introduction,

provision and evaluation of sustainable and appropriate palliative care programmes.

“ At the Maruzza Foundation, we are committed to assuring access to palliative and end-of-

life care for all those suffering from life-limiting and life-threatening illness. Our projects are

ambitious, but we trust that with the help and support of those who believe and participate

in our mission, we can improve the lives of many seriously ill individuals and their families.

On behalf of my sister Maruzza, the Maruzza Foundation and the entire Lefèbvre D’Ovidio

family, I wish to express my most sincere gratitude to Silversea and the international

community of guests for embracing this important cause. Your generous contributions

will further Maruzza’s dream and help us bring a smile into the life of a critically ill child.”

mAking A differenceONE fOR lIfE The Maruzza Foundation is an independent charity that relies exclusively on voluntary contributions

to promote awareness in today’s society of the need for palliative care. Silversea Cruises is proud

to support the Maruzza Foundation’s One For Life initiative, a fundraising programme that permits

Silversea guests to become actively involved in this important cause.

yOUR sUppORTA donation of one dollar per day, per guest will help fund research and educational programmes

such as the “Children Project” — a programme that provides seriously ill children and their families

the full range of quality palliative and hospice care services that would otherwise be unavailable.

Many individuals, businesses and organisations already provide generous support for the Maruzza

Foundation. But with one in four of us likely to suffer an incurable disease at some point in our lives,

the critical need for palliative care and support services are on the increase.

Please help. Whether it is through personal experience, or a family member or friend affected by a

life-limiting or life-threatening illness, the need for adequate palliative care is a universal concern that

in some way impacts all of us. Your donation will make a difference.
