For many people, self-care is about having a healthy skin care routine, and today, that often includes skin care products formulated with food-grade ingredients.

Food-inspired self-care not only appeals to those looking for more natural, often certified-organic beauty products, but it also fits with the fact that younger millennials link healthy eating and the intake of nutrients or supplements with a better complexion.

Consider also that most cosmetics’ ingredients don’t have to be approved by the FDA. Obviously food does, so buying food-grade or food-inspired products is a way to make sure you’re not putting questionable ingredients on your skin. In this chapter, we look to some of the skin care founded on ancient principles, as well as skin care with herbal properties of a higher quality.

Skin Supplements: NUE CO

According to Mintel, 41% of US females aged 18–34 use an oral supplement designed to enhance their appearance, according to Mintel’s latest research on vitamins, minerals, and supplements in the US.

A great example is Nue Co’s skin care supplements made from whole foods and organic ingredients, and without fillers or unnecessary ingredients.

This interest isn’t just about what is and isn’t in the supplements, it’s also about the science behind them: Founder, Jules Miller, and her team have put in time and research to ensure that every component of these supplements is the most beneficial one and of the highest standard.

DIY Face MasksUnder the belief that the best skin care mimics a healthy diet, savvy consumers are making their beauty masks sourced by their superfood pantries.

While face masks are readily available in drugstores and high-end beauty stores alike, making face masks at home gives these consumers transparency of ingredients and allows them to customize their masks based on their current skin care needs.

When it comes to self-care, the ritual of combining ingredients to make a mask may be as important as the mask itself. The selection and mixing of ingredients create a small “me” moment that allows for decompressing and refocusing.

Tocotrienols by Moon JuiceWhole food tocotrienol complex is derived from organic California rice and is a very concentrated source of vitamins E, D, and antioxidants.

Sun Potion ChlorellaSun Potion’s algae-based powder contains 10% chlorophyll and 50% protein. The potion is appropriate as an additive to smoothies and other foods, or as a component in a face mask. Chlorella is highly alkalizing, deeply detoxifying, rich in antioxidants, and immune boosting.

Ayurvedic BeautyAs an extension of food-grade ingredients, we find Ayurvedic beauty. Known for extolling the benefits of balancing the whole body, supporting digestive health, optimizing energy, and treating individuals according to their specific dosha (constitution)—the 5,000-year-old science is about so much more than just finding the right facial cleanser or aesthetician.

Ayurveda works with an individual’s three energetic forces known as doshas. There are three types of doshas: Vata characterizes the mobile nature of wind (air) energy, Pitta embodies the transformative essence of fire energy, and Kapha reflects the binding nature of water energy.

According to Kiera Nachman, founder of Sundara Holistic, part of what makes Ayurvedic beauty products so powerful is that all of the ingredients have to be edible. “It’s really an inside-out view to health and beauty. I view my products as little elixirs of life—the bottles are literally alive and thriving with cosmic energy,” she says.

Dr Pratima Raichur, Ayurvedic practitioner and author of the Ayurvedic skin care bible Absolute Beauty, has created a line of skin care products in response to her patients’ skin concerns. The result is a beautifully crafted line of skin care items that reflects the issues of each dosha while supporting and maintaining healthy, vibrant skin.

Entirely Edible: Rasasara Skinfood

Rasasara Skinfood is Ayurvedic skincare that only uses organic ingredients to create products for Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas, as well as tri-doshic blends. Rasasara explicitly touts its “edible” credentials as a point of differentiation.

Multipurpose Essential OilsAdjacent to Ayurveda, we find essential oils, and dōTERRA is one of the major players shaping the essential oils category. Evaluated at almost $1 billion, dōTERRA has seen impressive growth over the past few years.

We’re starting to see essential oils pop up across the food and beauty categories, celebrated by consumers who want to add a little extra to self-care routines. Some add a few drops to the morning smoothie; others add essential oils to their baths or as a stress reliever.

The versatility of essential oils is encouraging people to search further and find even more ways to reap the benefits of the wellness-boosting oils.

Essential Oil Connoisseurs: A Beautiful Mess

On a slightly smaller scale than dōTERRA, we find Elsie Larson and Emma Chapman—prominent advocates of essential oils and authors of the blog A Beautiful Mess.

Among many inspirational blog posts about the various ways to use essential oils, Larson and Chapman offer a recipe for a DIY diffuser that combines coarse Himalayan salt, a hollowed-out citrus rind, and essential oils. This method is an organic and cheaper alternative to pricey diffusers.

Based on the success of their blog and their interest in beauty and self-care, the two friends recently launched a line of beauty products, Oui Fresh, featuring essential oils and natural lipsticks.

Turmeric-Inspired Beauty & Skin Care ProductsAlso a part of the Ayurvedic tradition, turmeric is gaining popularity. While the root is a favorite cooking ingredient, turmeric also has several beneficial properties for beauty.

Not only is turmeric great for digestion and the healing of the body when ingested, it also strengthens and repairs hair and adds a healthy glow to the skin.

Multifunctional Hair Care: Turmeric Hair Oil

This hair oil comes with pure, organic, cold-pressed turmeric oil handpicked from the tropical rainforests in the Ecuadorian Amazon. It’s said to strengthen thinning and damaged hair and soothe dry, itchy scalps, all while promoting hair growth and hydration.

Beauty’s New High: CBDSimilar to CBD in food products, this divisive yet popular ingredient is also finding its way to the beauty aisle.

CBD oil is said to offer relief from pain, anxiety, and depression; it can stimulate appetite and has anti-inflammatory and anti-acne properties.

Some celebrities speak openly about how they use CBD for its pain-relieving properties. Among them is Olivia Wilde, who recently told the New York Times that she used CBD to relieve physical aches during a Broadway run.

For Pain Relief: Lord Jones CBD Lotion

Lord Jones is best known for its killer packaging and potent THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) gummies, but its lotion deserves a cult following of its own.

Lord Jones uses an extra-strength formula for sore muscles, joint pain, and skin conditions, with each bottle containing 100mg of CBD. Formulated with Frescolat—a natural agent that creates a cooling sensation upon contact—this cream is a soothing, luxurious lotion that penetrates, and is readily absorbed by, the skin.

The fashion stylist Karla Welch—who works with Ruth Negga, Katy Perry, and Sarah Paulson—uses Lord Jones CBD lotion on her clients’ feet when they walk the red carpet. “It’s perfect for long nights in high heels,” Ms. Welch says. “All my girls love it, and bottles live in my styling kit.”

Fighting Skin Conditions: Khus + Khus The

Face Serums

This line of organic, herbal face potions would make anyone feel special. The intro set features a selection of botanical serums, each with a unique claim to fame. The latest addition to the brand’s lineup, the SEN face serum, uses eco-certified CBD extract plus rhododendron, French lavender, ruh khus (aka wild vetiver), and frankincense to fight skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis. It also tackles dry skin, fine lines, and pigmentation issues.

Scent-Inspired Wellness: Boy Smell Kush

Some beauty lines, including scented candle company Boy Smells, put cannabis in their products purely for the scent.

For example, Boy Smells has a cannabis-scented candle called Kush. “We’re aware that having a cannabis candle is a little provocative, but I personally love the flavor and smell of cannabis,” says Matthew Herman, a founder who previously worked for the fashion labels Giles Deacon, Proenza Schouler, and Zac Posen. “It has a wet earth smell that is very attractive.”
