For many people, self-care is about having a healthy skin care routine, and today, that often includes skin care products formulated with food-grade ingredients.

Food-inspired self-care not only appeals to those looking for more natural, often certified-organic beauty products, but it also fits with the fact that younger millennials link healthy eating and the intake of nutrients or supplements with a better complexion.

Consider also that most cosmetics’ ingredients don’t have to be approved by the FDA. Obviously food does, so buying food-grade or food-inspired products is a way to make sure you’re not putting questionable ingredients on your skin. In this chapter, we look to some of the skin care founded on ancient principles, as well as skin care with herbal properties of a higher quality.

While face masks are readily available in drugstores and high-end beauty stores alike, making face masks at home gives these consumers transparency of ingredients and allows them to customize their masks based on their current skin care needs.

When it comes to self-care, the ritual of combining ingredients to make a mask may be as important as the mask itself. The selection and mixing of ingredients create a small “me” moment that allows for decompressing and refocusing.

Multipurpose Essential OilsAdjacent to Ayurveda, we find essential oils, and dōTERRA is one of the major players shaping the essential oils category. Evaluated at almost $1 billion, dōTERRA has seen impressive growth over the past few years.

We’re starting to see essential oils pop up across the food and beauty categories, celebrated by consumers who want to add a little extra to self-care routines. Some add a few drops to the morning smoothie; others add essential oils to their baths or as a stress reliever.

Essential Oil Connoisseurs: A Beautiful Mess

On a slightly smaller scale than dōTERRA, we find Elsie Larson and Emma Chapman—prominent advocates of essential oils and authors of the blog A Beautiful Mess.

Among many inspirational blog posts about the various ways to use essential oils, Larson and Chapman offer a recipe for a DIY diffuser that combines coarse Himalayan salt, a hollowed-out citrus rind, and essential oils. This method is an organic and cheaper alternative to pricey diffusers.

Based on the success of their blog and their interest in beauty and self-care, the two friends recently launched a line of beauty products, Oui Fresh, featuring essential oils and natural lipsticks.

Beauty’s New High: CBDSimilar to CBD in food products, this divisive yet popular ingredient is also finding its way to the beauty aisle.

CBD oil is said to offer relief from pain, anxiety, and depression; it can stimulate appetite and has anti-inflammatory and anti-acne properties.

Some celebrities speak openly about how they use CBD for its pain-relieving properties. Among them is Olivia Wilde, who recently told the New York Times that she used CBD to relieve physical aches during a Broadway run.
