THE INTERNATIONAL STAFF SONGSTERS

________________________________________________________________________________

The International Staff Songsters is The Salvation Army‟s premier choir. Its mission is to give a clear

expression of the gospel of Jesus Christ through music, and to communicate his love in a vital and attractive

way. The ISS was formed in 1980 by General Arnold Brown, then International Leader of The Salvation Army,

who challenged the Group to inspire people with the „heart songs‟ of The Salvation Army. Over 30 years on,

their latest recording “Heart Songs” includes many of the “Army‟s” most loved songs.

The style of the ISS spans a large range of Christian music from contemporary to classical, spirituals to

traditional songs. Whatever the genre, the ISS seek to praise and worship God through music, and to be

effective communicators of the gospel.

All members are Salvationists, active in their local Salvation Army corps (church), and come from many

different areas of employment.

Their current Leader, Dorothy Nancekievill, is also Director of Music at Wells Cathedral School, where she

works with many of the best young musicians and teachers from this, and many other countries. Dorothy is

passionate about vocal music in The Salvation Army; her desire is that the ISS should excite, challenge and

inspire their listeners.

As a choir they are regarded as representatives of The Salvation Army in the international arena. Overseas

visits have included the USA, Canada, Scandinavia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, as well as a

ground-breaking tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe in September 2000. The most recent overseas visit saw

the ISS tour Finland, Estonia and Sweden over the Easter period 2007. In 2012, the ISS looks forward to its

first visit to the South American continent, with a tour of the South America East Territory, followed by

participation in the annual Old Orchard Beach meetings, near Boston, USA, as guests of the USA Eastern

Territory.

As well as regularly leading worship each month at Salvation Army centres, the ISS also participate in

national Salvation Army meetings and other religious events, radio and TV broadcasts. The CD ministry is a

vital part of their outreach work, and their recordings allow the ISS to widen their ministry to listeners around

the world.

The ISS meet every Wednesday at Territorial Headquarters in Central London and welcome visitors to their

rehearsals.

Enfield Citadel Band

For more than 100 years, Enfield Citadel Band has proclaimed the gospel message in the suburbs of North London. Founded in Tottenham, in 1892, the band gained early recognition as one of The Salvation Army’s leading musical groups and, in the years that followed, a rich history and tradition was established. In 1972, with the merging of two Salvation Army corps, the band moved to Enfield, on the outskirts of North London, and assumed its present title. There, as before, the band’s service has continued within the corps, in open-air activities and in visits to hospitals etc. in the same way as Salvation Army bands throughout the world.

In addition to service within it’s own locality Enfield Citadel Band travels extensively to present its ministry in music making. It has performed in most of the major concert venues in the British Isles and has shared programmes with some of the leading contesting bands including Black Dyke, Fairey’s and Foden’s. Visits to Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA have also been undertaken. Enfield Citadel Band is also regularly involved in broadcasting and recording activities: a number of recent recordings on compact disc are available tonight.

A wide range of professions are represented by its members from accountants to architects and civil servants to salesmen, but all are united by the desire to use their talents in the Lord’s service.

Bandmaster Jonathan Corry

Having commenced cornet lessons with his father, John, Jonathan Corry quickly progressed and took trumpet lessons with Paul Young (a former Enfield bandsman) and became Principal Trumpet of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

He studied trumpet at the Royal Northern College of Music, during which time he developed a keen interest in conducting which led to him being appointed at a young age as Musical Director of Besses O’th Barn Brass Band. It was at this time that he also featured as a guest soloist at Enfield Citadel Band’s Spring Festival.

Jonathan has since appeared as guest conductor for many top bands throughout the UK and recently received an invitation to conduct French champions, Brass Band Nord Pas-de-Calais.

A fifth generation Salvationist, Jonathan originally hails from Belfast Temple and was appointed Bandmaster of Enfield Citadel Band in January 2009 after a move to London. His first commitment is to the unique music ministry of Enfield Citadel Band and using his talent ‘Ad Optimum’ – To The Highest.

A Welcome to All

Congregational Hymn

PRAISE, my soul, the King the Heaven,

To his feet thy tribute bring; Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, Who like thee his praise should sing?

Praise Him! Praise the everlasting King.

2 Praise him for his grace and favour To our fathers in distress;

Praise him still the same as ever, Slow to chide and swift to bless;

Praise him! Glorious in his faithfulness.

3 Father-like he tends and spares us; Well our feeble frame he knows, In his hands he gently bears us,

Rescues us from all our foes. Praise him!

Widely as his mercy flows.

4 Angels in the heights adore him, Ye behold him face to face;

Sun and moon bow down before him: Dwellers all in time and space,

Praise him! Praise with us the God of grace.

Words of Appreciation

Baritone Solo

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds thy hands have made;

I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

CHORUS

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee; How great thou art! How great thou art!

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee: How great thou art! How great thou art!

Soprano Solo

When through the woods and forest glades I wander And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,

When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur, And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:

Songsters

And when I think that God, his Son not sparing, Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in;

That on the cross, my burdens gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin:

ALL

When Christ shall come with shouts of acclamation,

And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I will bow in humble adoration,

And there proclaim, my God, how great thou art! Carl Boberg (1859-1940),

Compere ________________________________ Lieut. Colonel Cyril Halstead Club Administrator

Completing National Service in 1958 Cyril entered The Salvation Army International Training College at Denmark Hill and has spent the last 54 years as an officer in The Salvation Army. Along with his wife Lila they served 27 years in Scotland coming south in 1985 to take command of the East Midlands Division later to be transferred to The West Midlands before coming to Territorial Headquarters in London for final appointment as Head of Fundraising for the UK.

His first link with Rotary came in the early ‘70’s when he was seconded to Rotary to take charge of a holiday for 24 boys from Northern Ireland sponsored by the Edinburgh District. The Edinburgh Rotarians had become concerned at the inter-communal strife in Northern Ireland at the time and arranged for 12 Catholic and 12 Protestant boys to spend 2 weeks holiday together. A most interesting assignment !

Two years later he was invited to join The Rotary Club of Govan in Glasgow 1973 and from there a continuing service with Rotary as he moved around the country with The Salvation Army. In Paisley, in Northampton, then Birmingham and eventually to the London Club. When Past President Arthur Thompson, Club Administrator for 10 years retired to Worthing, Cyril was approached to take on the task of Club Administrator. His comment, “I am delighted and honoured to be able to continue to serve Rotary in my retirement”.
