For 128 years, Educational Alliance has provided direct services to the changing Lower East Side

and East Village. In response to growing community need surrounding the recent rise in hate crimes

and hateful rhetoric, we are galvanizing our community to be even more inclusive and supportive

of all New Yorkers with our recently launched “We the People” initiative. This multifaceted project is reclaiming Lower Manhattan as a

space where all are welcome, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or language.

To our loyal friends and supporters,

Educational Alliance was founded over 128 years ago in the Lower East Side to help new Jewish immigrants to assimilate to this country. We are proud of that history. The work continues today as it always has, though the population we serve has shifted dramatically over the course of the last century.

Our organization has grown steadily in response to community need and we proudly serve 50,000 New Yorkers each year of all races, religions, nationalities, and languages. We know that our diversity is something to celebrate. It is arguably our greatest strength.

The diversity of perspectives at Educational Alliance has contributed significantly to our reputation as innovators. We continue to pilot new programs and models to be used across the nation and we owe part of that success to the eclectic melting pot of perspectives and experiences available to us not only in the client population we serve, but in our staff as well.

At Educational Alliance, diversity has always been something of immense value, but in the context of the recent rise in hate crimes and hateful rhetoric across our nation, diversity has become one of our most vital values. This community of people, whose stories you’ll explore in the following pages, are our inspiration, our think tank, our laboratory, and our family. This is a special community to be a part of and it feels more important than ever today, so we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support. From our pioneering Head Start early education

programs to our eight Boys & Girls Clubhouses and

college prep program, we’ve created evidence-based

programming for young people in our neighborhood,

ensuring that every young person has access to

socio-emotional support and academic opportunities,

regardless of the circumstances into which they are born.

Schools in the Lower East Side have graduation rates

as low as 37%. For the ninth straight year, 100% of our

College Prep participants have graduated high school

and enrolled in college.

We believe that health and wellness are an essential

part of supporting New York’s families. Community

members of all ages and backgrounds come together

to exercise in our fitness centers at the Manny Cantor

Center and 14th Street Y. Those in recovery at our

Center for Recovery and Wellness participate in

running clubs, yoga, and meditation classes, and keep

each other motivated and focused on their goals.

Older adults use aerobic dance and swimming

to stay healthy and fit as they age.

Older adults at Educational Alliance are able to stay

healthy, independent, and deeply connected in our

community centers. This year, we’ve expanded the

population we serve and bolstered our in-home

outreach. We are leaders in working with mental

We are here to lift our families up and to empower the

vulnerable to find strength. Our Center for Recovery

and Wellness, New York’s first community center

focused on Substance Use Disorder and recovery,

embraces those in our community who often feel

marginalized when seeking out help. We believe we

equipped to overcome addiction when they have a

strong support network of family and friends.
