Hello my TACE Colleagues, and welcome back to Austin!!
It is the time of year when I am overly elated and quite happy. The
reason for my overwhelming joy is the convening of the annual Texas
Administrators for Continuing Education Conference. Each year, we
come to Austin, Texas to be reinvigorated and reenergized, while
receiving training from our peers. The excitement of meeting new
people, obtaining new knowledge and information, and seeing new and
amazing technology, curriculum, and support materials from
participating vendors and sponsors is exhilarating.
This year’s conference theme is: TACE 2019: Building Futures. This theme was selected, because it
encompasses the primary goal of what continuing education is all about. We allow people to train and
educate themselves in order to build and expand their futures. In other words, it matters not where one
begins but whether they reach their ultimate destination.
We have two dynamic keynote speakers this year. Mr. Billy Riggs, the former pastor of a large church, is a
master illusionist, who utilizes his speaking skills and signature blend of talents to spread his message
about the power of attitude to determine the outcome of all endeavors, especially navigating change and
inspiring leadership. Our Day Two keynote speaker, Dr. Steve Bedwell, is a medical doctor (MD with
research training), who is also a stand-up comedian with an unparalleled ability to present cutting-edge
content while being laugh-out-loud funny. This approach, education and entertainment in equal measure,
has earned him rave reviews. These are two extraordinary professionals building futures, while utilizing
their diverse and unique set of talents and skills.
As always, I want to encourage you to get involved in TACE. Please talk to a Board or Conference
Planning Team member for more details. To those of you who have been volunteering, I thank you and
please continue performing your outstanding work.
I am mindful that we could not offer this great conference and its outstanding agenda without our sponsors.

As this is my final conference as your president, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the TACE Board and
the Conference Planning Committee for their hard work. I am but a cog in a system that has functioned for
nearly 40 years. This organization and its officers are a reflection of the people we serve and represent.
Additionally, thanks go to you, the members, who allow us to work for and represent you. So, thank you to
all of our TACE membership.
Finally, on behalf of the TACE Board and the Conference Planning Committee, I welcome you to the

Once again TACE is hosting a silent auction filled with a wide assortment of items for you to bid on. Items are
donated from all colleges and their programs. What a fun way to raise funds for the Kirk White Scholarship!

50/50 RAFFLE
The 50/50 raffle is a fundraising opportunity that involves the sale of raffle tickets with the proceeds being
split evenly between the winner and the organization. Tickets are 1 Ticket for $1 or 6 Tickets for $5. Tickets
will be on sale through lunch on Wednesday, where the winning ticket will be drawn at 1:00 pm.
All proceeds from the Silent Auction and 50/50 Raffle will benefit TACE’s Kirk White Scholarship Fund, which
helps TACE members by supporting professional development activities.
MARKETING SHOWCASE
The TACE Marketing Showcase is an opportunity for colleges to display their marketing expertise! Each
college is invited to submit one marketing piece. Submission can be a printed piece, a PDF of a screen shot
of a marketing item that is posted to their college’s website, an advertisement posted on the web, a
brochure, handbill, or flyer. Attendees will have the opportunity to vote on the most effective marketing
pieces during the President’s Reception on Tuesday evening. Winners will be announced at the luncheon on
Wednesday.

Southpark A/B The Corporate College Re-Imagined
The financial crisis of 2008 forced many major corporations in the Advanced
Technologies and Manufacturing industry not only to downsize workers, but
also functions. Supporting operations that were not considered a core
competency of the business, like in-house corporate universities were in
many instances dissolved, never to return. This presentation reveals how the
corporate training department of one college's continuing education
department is filling the educational gap. By designing a versatile and
highly efficient curriculum for the Advanced Technologies and
Manufacturing industry, ACC is moving into position to become the de
facto corporate college for Samsung, Applied Materials, and other key
industry players. This nuanced strategy is both fresh and surprising. As the
relationship between the community college and these key corporate
players evolves, communal education resources are being leveraged in an
exciting new way.

SDF Grant Best Practices
Our Richland College team will share the experience of managing a Skills
Development Fund (SDF) grant and what has proved successful for us,
including examples of processes developed to stay on target with SDF
guidelines. Hear tips that help us build relationships with key trainers and

that help us more efficiently manage the grant. Examples will be provided
of challenges we’ve faced and what was done to meet them.

maintained by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The Workforce
Education Course Manual (WECM) Advisory Committee works to maintain the
WECM, including making recommendations concerning the addition, deletion, and
revision of WECM courses; the approval of local need course requests; and other
activities necessary for the maintenance of the WECM. This session will provide
detailed insight into the following: WECM purpose and how it aligns with the
statewide initiatives; elements of a WECM courses; the types of WECM courses, and
the course categories; the role of the WECM Advisory Committee and an overview
of GIPWE Keys to Navigating the WECM Website.

The Oaks Understanding Criminal Background Checks for Clinical Placement
Learn the basic components of a background check, understand why employers
require them, and appreciate what considerations affect employers' decisions
about criminal history. When it comes to the presence of criminal history on a
background report, it's not entirely straightforward whether the applicant or student
will be hired or admitted. This session will help attendees understand the nuances in
order to better assist students. This session also provides education around the legal
requirements employers and schools must be aware of when using background
checks.

We are teaching our students occupational skills but are we teaching them the
foundational skills of leadership such as integrity, responsibility, grit, etc. The world is
ever changing. We must work to keep up with the changes and equip our students
with the right skills so they can stay a step ahead of the changes. However, we must
not lose sight of the foundational skills that are so important to their success. It is our
responsibility to develop leaders that go forth and make a difference in the world.
Leadership skills can be easily incorporated in every class. We must lead the way to
promote the inclusion of these leadership concepts. I will provide the keys to
leadership that will develop the leader within the student and prepare them for
their life adventure.

Data based decision making or data driven decision making refers to the
ongoing process of collecting and analyzing different types of data
including demographic, student achievement exams, satisfaction testing,
and process data to guide decisions towards improvement of the
educational process. This session explores reengineering approaches to
customer centric engagement through the client and customer relations life
cycle. Participants will define the customer experience and examine how to
use the analytics to increase enrollment and retention. Topics discussed
include sentiment analysis, enrollment demographics, and digital
advertising. Ways to develop and implement strategic initiatives to drive
behavioral changes, process improvement, and foster environmental
changes based on customer analytics will be highlighted.

The Workforce Education Course Manual is the repository of all courses
which can be utilized to receive state-funding in colleges across Texas. Just
as WECM course content adapts to changes, the WECM course review
process itself must adapt to ensure that the WECM stays relevant to
workforce needs throughout the state. In this session participants will be
updated on the course review process, receive updated information and
guideline modifications/changes, pending rules interpretations, and/or
process improvements proposed by the state WECM Advisory Committee.

Southpark A/B Build a Farm, Build a Community
In 2013, ACC launched its long-awaited community program in Sustainable
Agriculture. Situated on several acres east of Austin, the student learning
farm and LEED-certified college campus quickly became the hub for
sustainable farming education and collaborative projects between like-
minded students, community members, neighboring farms, and businesses.
We will discuss how ACC tapped into an expansive community interest, and
developed an educational program to meet the needs for skill training (in
sustainable agriculture), and personal enrichment (through the
consumption of locally grown and ethically produced food) for that interest.
We will examine several modes of community engagement, from student-
led farmers markets and volunteer workdays, to farm tours, events, and food
share programs.

Transition to College Intellectual Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Program
from Beginning to End
Students with physical and cognitive disabilities are accessing
postsecondary education in record numbers. This is the result of better
accommodation practices at the high school level and improved access to
personal support. However, students with learning and physical disabilities
still face a number of barriers that can impact their success in college. This
includes a lack of awareness of their strengths, limited self-advocacy skills,
and the elimination of the support structure that supported them in high
school. This session will highlight several ways to orient new college students
with disabilities to the array of resources available at the college level and
help them make this shift successfully. The presentation aims to inform
institutions of higher education how they can develop and implement
effective sustainable programs for IDD students.

In this session, you will learn how Richland College works closely with their
training partner, Divergence Academy, to effectively consult with clients on
IT needs. With AI, Cloud Computing and Big Data changing workforce
requirements, client meetings must "cut to the chase" so time is better spent
analyzing the needs and ensuring clients the college/partner can deliver
training that is essential and valuable to the company. Several strategies
and examples will be shared and tools to capture information vital for
college and trainer needs.

which offers Career Readiness/Occupational Skills Training to individuals with
intellectual & developmental disabilities (IDD's), will share its' proven
strategies for program development, sustainability, replicability and building
& maintaining diverse and innovative partnerships on and off campus. VAST
Academy will share its' best practices, as a national and state leader in

Texas is transforming adult education as a major contributor to the Texas
workforce system through career pathways. The Texas Workforce
Commission established a state goal of 20,000 in career pathways programs
by 2010. How are we doing? Come hear the Texas Adult Education and
Literacy State Director describe current state performance, model designs,
integration challenges, and future efforts to expand these models to
promote greater success for lower-skilled students.
