LOOKING GLASS

Attitude Mattersby Romy A. Juanico

Unity in Diversity

It is a silent majestic province of Albay; suddenly there came this Palarong Pambansa 2016. Local Government Units of the Province converged to plan on the things to be done to make Palarong Pambansa

2016 worth remembering.A week long Palaro it is, and a lot of significant changes have been

done to the province. Big and small entrepreneurs had the chance to gain profits, due to the bulk of participants arriving from different parts of the country.

A great place, placid waters, fresh air, and above all the beauty of that maiden that lure’s any heart to

its crest, her majesty the perfect coned Mayon Volcano. Making it in this province it’s as if each play and each participant is being welcomed by her candidness.

In spite of it all, this idea keeps on lingering, different people, different culture, perspective and whole a lot more, and yet converge not to insult or to prejudice but to be themselves. Indeed Filipinos are unique in every way, even if there are language barriers yet a simple tap, and glimpse of an eye all can be changed. Palarong Pambansa 2016 in Albay is good, yet not that perfect, because there are still some factors that needs fixing, just like the over strictness of some police officers to some of our media people.

Simple words, and pleasing notions if something is to be asked to media people is needed, likewise giving media people the polite please could not degrade ones position.

However in spite of it all something in this Palaro, can make any person cry and that is the colors, and multitude of differences is magnanimous yet, can be shrank to a single notion, that is this Palaro united every individual in spite of differences.

During the 100 m run in Albay sports complex, even if that runner lose and cried his soul out, unexpectedly the winner came and hugged him, knowing that they don’t even know each other. Simple acts of kindness surely make you believe in the honesty of humanity, and there is still hope.

It is never about the differences or the alikeness but rather the acceptance that this Palaro made these athletes compete to win, but also to compete within them to destroy barriers and unite to a single purpose, and that is in spite of differences we can be one.

This Palarong Pambansa is unique on its own that, surely we can say, TOGETHER WE ARE ONE!

Winning a medal or breaking a previous record is what every athlete aims for in every competition. Here in Palarong Pambansa, records are kept broken, triumphs are celebrated and defeats serve as challenge to perform even better.

As DepEd stages Palarong Pambansa 2016, more than the victories, triumphs, defeats, and failures one will surely experience are the learned lessons one can benefit from – the values of discipline, humility, teamwork, determination, perseverance to name a few.

Winning athletes proved they have tons of determination and persevere in every endeavour they have been through, not to mention the sacrifices they endure to be victorious. We equate winning with possessing positive values one can learned from his sports. Winners should stay humble despite the victories and continue to persevere.

However, it’s not only

the athletes who must possess these positive values. Coaches, parents and spectators alike are likewise expected to model these values. The coach who mentor his/her athlete should possess first these values for his/her mentee to emulate. Parents too must model such attitude from their very home which is the haven of every athlete. Spectators as well who would make or break the tolerance of every athlete while playing in the field. All in all everyone has a great part in making every athlete shine who are equipped with skills and values.

Palarong Pambansa from the very beginning is one avenue were different sporting enthusiasts glass case their ability in different sporting events. Knowing that there are great athletes, Palaro is not all about the fame but rather the attitude of every athletes in facing their fear of losing and having the confidence in winning.

SEEING DEEPER

By Antonio M. Maganto Jr

THE VIEW POINT

Too AiryYeah! You see that!

You f@$&#%g s!$t! That’s me, no one else only me!

Responsibility in words and deeds is a noteworthy characteristic an athlete must possess, one of the factors noticeably best describe an individual. Words’ coming out from our mouth, most of the time describes what we are and who we are, however

if you are an athlete, this would be a total backlash on your part knowing that you are supposed to be a complete representation of discipline.

Words made a lot of changes in this planet, during the opening program of the Palarong Pambansa 2016 here at Legazpi, Albay a lot of public officials, challenged the athletes

to perform well. Those words of challenge had made an impression to every athlete that they had to perform and make the best out of what they’ve got. Words are not just simple facet of human existence, in the delivery of in formations but are also vital in delivering significant ideals that the public are entitled to know.

In some instance athletes, tend to forget the real score of joining any sporting event, significantly in winning, attention’s gained and even the crowds’ cheers. In one of the sporting events, that athlete

literally boasted what he had achieved and even saying things supposed to be an athlete like him is not saying. Making those notions, an idea came out, that athletes are trained to be physically strong and to be focus, however attitude improvement should be included.

Winning is a good thing, because that validates the efforts exerted by the coaches and the athletes. However athletes should be cautious in their attitude, because they are no longer their own but the public.

W e always tend to f ix things not only for

ourselves but also for others. It is human nature we may say but when we are coaching, we often wonder why these people do not see things the way we see it nor seeing things as clear as we do.

Coaching is about creating awareness, fostering sense of responsibility and enabling action. But it is the coachee that has to be aware, take responsibility and make decisions. Any intervention from the coach that reduces any of these outcomes, reduces the impact of coaching. Telling the coachee what to do, is reducing his

The Essence of CoachingBy Marivi L. Castro

or her responsibility. (Ducheyne, 2013).

This is tough. On the other hand we tend to balance with what we are trained for as coaches and the culture we tend to practice all our lives. Somehow this might make us feel powerless or uneasy because we all tend to nail every decision we have to make as coaches.

However, our role as coaches is not just al l about the content, but it is about the Process. We are fully responsible with what we do and whatever it takes, in order to enable awareness, responsibility and action.

And our tools in doing so is we transcend learning, provide access

to training, listening, asking questions and confronting.

As we focus and guide our coachee with the process, we too grow in tolerance, patience and deeper understanding specially molding these young athletes we have.

The coach’s behavior towards what they do can be affected by their motivation. According to Kristy McLean of University of Queensland, that such behavior must be conducive to positive athlete experience, perception and performance. Therefore the inf luencing coach behavior is critical in the optimization of the athlete’s learning

environment.Thus, it creates

a better outcomes that echoes through the health and well –being of the coach, and improved coach-athlete relationships, athlete motivation, satisfaction and performance.

The essence of coaching always radiates through the success and failures of our coachee or mentee. It wil l always give us a learning advantage rather than to be labelled as failures as coaches. A learning advantage where we can ref lect on how to improve, what was wrong or lacking, and innovate to come stronger and better the next time we coach.

Palaro first-timer gifted another gold medal for Region-12

via her 100-m hurdle early Thursday at the on-going sports festivities of the

Palarong Pambansa held at the Oval Track of Albay Sports and Tourism Center .

Trisha Mae Arañador, 12 of Tboli Town, clocked 17.02s

to win her first ever gold in athletics. Her teammate Leah Leen Puig snatched the silver with 17.06s while Piepet Prebillo of Western Visayas landed third for her 17.34s.

Seeing action for the first time at the biggest sporting event in the country, Arañador was not overwhelmed by the presence of her opponents from the big cities.

A daughter of a laborer at a multi-national pineapple plantation company based at her hometown, Arañador was only handpicked by her coach to join athletics this year after seeing some potential on her. Her feat was surprising as she hurdled provincial and regional eliminations.

“I never realized I could achieve this far,” she said.

The cash incentives she will be receiving will be given to her parents for her education.

She is set to qualify for her 4x100m relay and 800mrun events on Friday.

There’s no reason to exclaim after winning two initial Palaro gold medals

in Archery.James Michael Exclamador,

from Polomolok town in South Cotabato made two golds in 50m and 60m events with a hairline difference in scores against his opponent Rogelio Tremedal of Central Visayas.

Fate however played well for this warrior of SOCCSKSARGEN after making a 2-point lead, 310-308 against Tremedal in a nerve wracking shower of arrows for the event in 50-meters at the playing venue located at Provincial Engineering Office at Salugan Camalig, Albay.

Zamboanga Peninsula’s Josiah Vivero came in third with his 301 feat.

The three archers maintained their placement for the event

in 60-m but Exclamador and Tremedal have to break the tie after the two scored 323 .

Again, luck is still with the SOCCSKSARGEN Warrior that he made another two-point lead to win gold after the tie breaker, 9-7.

Once again Vivero came in third with 322 point.

Exclamador’s teammate Justin Ronato of General Santos City also won the gold in 30-m with the score of 337; Allen Andrei Raquipo of Region 1 scored 334 to win Silver, while Quint Abejah Amongan of Cordelliera Administrative Region scored 332.

The feat of the two archers is by far the biggest medal haul won by the SRAA for Boys Secondary Division. SOCCSKSARGEN only settled for a silver medal last year in Tagum City courtesy of Girls Secondary Division.

Meanwhile, warriors football team in elementary is waiting for their next game to advance to semi-finals by battling past Zamboanga Peninsula.

The SOCCSKSARGEN side made a tie goal in the first half against Zamboanga Peninsula but the warriors thumped in three straight shots to put them in control in the final half.

Football elem to wait for semisThe little warriors will meet giant

teams National Capital Region and Ilocos Region in bracket A, Western Visayas and Davao regions in bracket B and Northern Mindanao and Bicol regions in bracket D.

Last year, NCR and Western Visayas were the best football teams while the warriors landed third.

Legazpi City, Albay--- Warriors’ persons with disability (PWD) beamed with happiness and pride as Palarong Pambansa 2016 organizers recognized PWDs in this year’s Palarong Pambansa.

Coach Fatima Helal appreciated the initiative of the organizers to take an opportunity to convey the advocacy and raise awareness about the plight of children with special needs in front of a huge crowd in this weeklong sporting event.

“This is one big time for us advocates to hear that our efforts will be multiplied ten folds because of this

opportunity,” Estrada stressed out, referring to at least 17, 000 athletes, visitors and guests across the country who watched the colorful opening ceremony.

Erica Salinas of Tupi Central School Sped Center got her two bronze medal in shot put and 100-meter run. Salinas is a partially blind athlete.

Assistant Secretary Tonesito

Umali, in an interview, encouraged regional delegation to participate and pushed for quality participation in all special events.

“We also give the same quality officiating and attention to our special events as to regular games but what we would like to gain result is the increase in interest of the public about PWD,” Umali said.

Ramon Abcede, Palaro Secretary General, said, “DepEd is looking into splitting the Palaro events that separates regular games to special events but the law mandates us to have one Palaro. However, we

are considering counting medals for this event to be included in the over-all medal standing of each region to highlight PWD sporting abilities.”

Marlon Loterte, Philippine Information Agency Information Officer and Palarong Pambansa 2016 Media Center In-Charge, added, “one of the advocacies of Albay is to mainstream PWD activities into the Palaro that’s why we tapped them to light the friendship urn.”

Next year, DepEd officials plan to include swimming and chess among the special events in the Palarong Pambansa.

Generally peaceful.

The Provincial Police Office Region V revealed that no incident of crime has

been recorded since the Palarong Pambansa opened on Sunday.

One for all and all for one.”

O, di ba bongga – tagapamalengke at benefactors pa kami at the same time.

When you say it, mean it.”

He is not the best player when he is playing, but look at him now, he is a great coach.” Dapat may PUSO. Kung wala ang mga ito makasarili ka.

Idagdag mo pa ang hamon na ibinigay ni RD Art Bayocot sa amin sa pagsisimula ng Palarong Pambansa 2016, Whatever you do, enjoy it but give your best – may you be a player, a trainer or a coach.”

Accidental coach, ako? No way!

As the sun continuously shine and as its rays reflects through the waters, a certain drive came

inside this young believer a belief that even she could not comprehend, as if she belong in an another world, a world she knows for the long time she wanted to be with.

Allen Joy Santos 12 years of age a grade 6 student from Pedro Acharon Sr. Central Elementary School, General Santos City, a daughter of a tricycle driver and a granddaughter to a kakanin vendor, who had high hopes for who she is and that she will be great.

Near her house are two swimming pools were a lot of people cool off, if the temperature rises, and it is a daily routine of her grandmother to go to those pools and sell their kakanin. It was an unusual day for her because certain drive made her think of swimming.

Without any hesitation she ran towards the water dived and do her thing, to her grandma’s amazement, her mouth could not contained it all, instead of fear but astonishment, that this little girl is as if a little mermaid caressing through those waters.

From that moment on it became Allen Joy’s daily routine, going through the swimming pool and swim. Yet something came up, as if something swings in, that – what she does is not enough. One day she told her father she wanted to compete, in swimming to try her luck, her father simply looked at her, thinking that what would a simple tricycle driver can do to let his child achieve what she wanted.

One morning Allen was shocked as her father woke her up telling her, “I could sacrifice my every morning’s income for your dream my child I am here to support you all the way” A sudden jolt into her heart, so as he promise she brought her child to trainings even if that would be hard on his part.

At age of 8 Allen joined her

first swimming competition she was Grade 3 at that time, joining Gensan’s swimming team at Ladislawo, Davao. Unluckily she didn’t win, but she never gave up so as her father, most especially knowing her Lola continuously sell kakanin for her dreams.

Year 2013 at age of 9 she again joined SRAA, still nothing happened, yet her father for that long, continuously do what he do giving up his early morning income, and so as her Lola selling kakanin for their mermaid.

However in every defeat is a prize ofv a lifetime in the year 2014 she won 1 gold and 2 silvers, all are happy knowing all efforts paid off, yet duvring the Palaro in Laguna she thought all is well but she haven’t got any.

Her soul is full and blood kept on running to succeed knowing that her Lola’s love and her father’s sacrifice be paid. In the year 2015 Palaro in Tagum she won silver for relay and in this year 2016 Palaro in Legazpi Albay that little mermaids silver tail turned into a golden tail as she won gold for 200 on individual, bronze 200 meter free style, silver 100 butterfly and relay 14x50 m.

She said her heart pounded, imagining her father’s sacrifices and above all her Lola’s love and her kakanin paid off. She is thankful to Owen Charles Latorre her trainer and her Palaro coach Bob Palacios for their unending guidance, and her Gensan Gliders swimming club’s support. Before future is unclear yet Normal University and La

GENSAN’S GOLDEN TAILED MERMAIDSalle is buying her to be theirs.

All seems blurring under water, but once you believe in the beauty of your dreams all blur will be cleared just like wearing gaggles under water. To this golden tailed mermaid this is just the beginning, for she had learned to bear the pain of losing without breaking.
