Dear Friends of Waukesha County Community Foundation,

The Foundation serves as a hub for generous individuals, families, businesses and other nonprofit organizations to turn their assets into action. 2016 was a year that focused on growth, partnership and increased engagement for the organization. In Fall, our Giving Forward breakfast brought nearly 250 community members together for a morning focused on charitable giving. Guests heard moving stories, learned about various non-profits and found out more about the Waukesha County Community Foundation (WCCF).

As a facilitator of philanthropy, this past March WCCF proudly hosted Waukesha County Provides, a community giving day to raise charitable donations for basic needs agencies that offer food, shelter, safety and hope to county residents in need. Additionally, WCCF coordinated our first ever Education Symposium which supported expanding the excellence of our area school districts by sharing best practices and strategies for education fundraising.

With each passing year, we see evidence that Waukesha County is one of the most generous communities anywhere. During 2016, $4.6 million dollars in grants were awarded to nonprofit organizations with 78% of those gifts directed locally. Collectively, the actions of our nearly 300 fundholders share one quality – the desire to make our world a better place.

As you read through this year’s report, know the successes we achieved would not be possible without your generosity and commitment to making a difference in our community. We are humbled and honored to work alongside the charitable donors who are making such a difference.

Thank you!

With gratitude,

Waukesha County Community Foundation Board of Directors and Staff

Shelli MarquardtPresident

Michael DuckettBoard Chair

Since its founding in 1999, the Foundation has been helped financially by donors of vision who foresee the impact that a strong community foundation can have in its community. These individuals and organizations have made contributions of $10,000 or more toward initial and continuing administrative operating expenses of the Foundation.

On March 9, Waukesha County Community Foundation (WCCF) was honored to host Waukesha County Provides, a community giving day to raise charitable donations for basic needs agencies that provide food, shelter, safety and hope to county residents in need. Thanks to the support of so many generous donors, this single-day giving event held at the Waukesha Public Library raised nearly $85,000 to support The Women’s Center, Hebron House, Hope Center and the FOOD Pantry of Waukesha County. We plan to make this an annual initiative and would appreciate your philanthropic support!

A STRONGER COMMUNITY IS THE HEALTHIEST BOTTOM LINE.Northern Trust is proud to support the Waukesha County Community Foundation. For more than 125 years, we’ve been meeting our clients’ financial needs while nurturing a culture of caring and a commitment to invest in the communities we serve. Because great returns can come from anywhere.

Nearly 250 community members came together on Wednesday, October 19,

2016, for our Giving Forward breakfast. The morning focused on charitable giving. Guests heard moving stories, learned about various non-profits and found out more about the Waukesha

County Community Foundation (WCCF).

Competitive grant awards were also announced at the breakfast. Twenty-three nonprofit organizations received $126,665 through 2016

WCCF grants.

Channel 58 News Anchor Michele McCormack emceed the event and the Waukesha North Chamber Singers and Arrowhead North Jazz Band provided entertainment.

Thanks to our signature sponsor Northern Trust along with support from Baird, Froedtert

& the Medical College, ProHealth Care and the WCCF’s Dalton Charitable Fund who provided

supporting sponsorship dollars.

How to Create a Charitable Fund

Donor Advised Funds allow you to make recommendations as to how distributions (grants) from the fund are spent. Although federal tax law requires that the Foundation make the ultimate decisions on grant distributions, we make every effort to follow your wishes. Donor advised funds operate much like a private foundation, but without the expense and tax-reporting requirements.

Field-of-Interest Funds are established to support unspecified programs or organizations in a general field of interest important to you, such as education, historic preservation, children, the elderly, the environment, or arts and culture.

Donor Designated Funds are established by you to benefit one or more specific organizations or programs.

Agency Funds are established by a nonprofit organizationto provide an annual source of income to support theorganization’s mission. An organization placing itsendowment with the WCCF directly benefits from inclusion in a large portfolio with access to experienced investment managers and administration of endowment services.

Scholarship Funds provide grants for educational purposes at both undergraduate and graduate levels. You may recommend an academic focus for your scholarship fund (such as nursing, the arts or engineering) and eligibility criteria (including financial need, academic merit, geographic residence and/or community service).

Creating a WCCF Fund is as easy as 1, 2, 3...1. Give it a name.2. Give it a purpose.3. Give it funds.

Unrestricted Funds are distributed for charitable purposes at the discretion of the board of directors. These important funds empower us to make strategic grants, where need and opportunity are greatest.

Waukesha County Community Foundation Operating Funds are endowments established to strengthen and support our continued philanthropic services to the community throughout Waukesha County. These funds are separate from all other funds and may be added to through donations.

How an Endowment Works• With a gift of $1,000, you can establish a fund for

almost any charitable purpose. Once the fund balancereaches $25,000 ($10,000 for Donor DesignatedFunds), it is able to begin making grants. The $25,000can be reached over a five-year period.

• The principal of your fund is never spent, and it can growover time to generate an increasing stream of fundingdevoted to your interests and the community.

• Earnings are used to make grants that meet communityneeds. Your gift – and all future income from your gift –is a permanent source of community funding that makesgood works possible, forever.

Giving through a community foundation offers a unique and powerful way for you to meet your philanthropic goals, whether you choose to establish your own endowment or contribute to a fund that already exists.

We’re here to help you make a difference in your community, leave a legacy and achieve your charitable vision. Whether you choose to embrace a specific cause or support an overall philanthropic effort, the Waukesha County Community Foundation (WCCF) will help you discover the power of endowed giving and define your charitable intent.

Individuals, families, corporations, institutions or nonprofit organizations may establish funds with the Waukesha County Community Foundation. We offer our donors many ways to meet their charitable goals.
