From ASIKOS to STEAG Power Minerals
The successful story continues
For many customers, ASIKOS was for a long time synonymous with the
highest product quality, the best advice and service, and innovative, custo-
mer-oriented developments in the blasting abrasives segment. Following the
incorporation of the business in the parent company STEAG Power Minerals,
the customers can still rely on these distinguishing characteristics – and also
benefit from a stronger logistics network and long-term security of supply.
Since its foundation in 1979, STEAG Power Minerals has established
itself as the European market leader for the recycling and marketing of
by-products from coal-fired power plants. For over 35 years now, the
company has been producing additives for construction materials which
are in great demand in the concrete and cement industry, among others,
on account of their quality-enhancing properties, and can today be
found in almost every cubic meter of concrete.
ASIKOS and STEAG – Closely connected for decades
The customers of STEAG Power Minerals benefit from over 45 years
of experience in the field of blasting abrasives. As early as 1967,
ASIKOS GmbH & Co. KG was founded in Herne, and half of its
shares were transferred to STEAG in 1974. The cin bulk partnership
between the two companies which had always existed was further
strengthened in 1980 by the move of the head office to the STEAG
building in Dinslaken. Since 1990, the company traded under the
name of ASIKOS Strahlmittel GmbH. The extensive and high-quality
range of products made ASIKOS a synonym for the best quality and
innovative developments in the blasting abrasives segment for many
customers over two decades.
Well positioned to face the future together
With effect from January 1, 2012, ASIKOS, which had been a wholly
owned subsidiary of STEAG Power Minerals since 2002, was fully
integrated into the parent company. This was the last, logical step in
a continuous process of convergence which had lasted almost four
decades and which benefited all the parties involved, and especially
the customers. For thanks to the comprehensive logistics network of
STEAG Power Minerals and the secured availability of raw materials for
blasting abrasives production, the continuing high demands for product
quality, customer-orientation and innovation can be fulfilled in the new
Blasting Abrasives Division in the long term and on the highest level.
The products from STEAG Power Minerals still bear the names
which are familiar in the industry, such as ASILIKOS or AFESIKOS.
These names are however more than just the simple designation
of a product. On the contrary, they also provide an indication of the
special properties of the blasting abrasives which have made them
so successful: ASILIKOS stems from the time when blasting with
sand was prohibited on account of the high risk of silicosis. In con-
trast to sand, ASILIKOS (composed of “a” from the Greek for “with-
out” and “silikos”) is free from the silica which is responsible for the
disease. The name AFESIKOS furthermore stands for a product
which is also free from metallic iron (“ferrum” in Latin) and is there-
fore especially suitable for use on magnetic, metallic surfaces.
What our product names tell you

quality blasting abrasives and personal customer service

Latest technology for perfect abrasives
Disposable blasting abrasives from STEAG Power Minerals, manufactured
from slag tap granulate, have enjoyed great popularity for several decades.
The raw material is created during the combustion of hard coal in power
plants, when liquid ash rapidly cools in a water bath, and is predominantly
composed of silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide and ferric oxide. The blasting
abrasives manufactured from the purely mineral granulate, with its low pro-
portions of contaminants and free silica, has an extremely low environmen-
tal impact and is especially suitable for use on sensitive surfaces.
Precise grain sizes down to hundredths of a millimeter
The plant can produce around 60 metric tons of blasting abrasives per
hour and up to 160,000 tons per annum. In that process, the granulate
supplied direct from the neighboring power plant by conveyor belt is first
treated to relieve stress, and the moisture then removed in a special drum-
type dryer. Two screening systems sort the granulate into grain sizes from
0.04 to 5 millimeters.
The abrasive can then be packaged for transport in 25 kilogram bags, or
in 1.0, 1.35 or 1.5 metric ton big bags, or directly loaded onto silo trucks.
There are also roofed-over storage areas available for 800 metric tons of
blasting abrasives, and a further 2,500 tons can be stocked in the open
air. In this way, even large-volume orders can be fulfilled on time.
By the way, we are thoroughly conscious of our responsibility for the envi-
ronment. That is why we operate an Environmental Management System
certified to ISO 14001 at our Lünen Blasting Abrasives Plant and at all
other production and handling facilities of STEAG Power Minerals.
Since 2007, the STEAG Power Minerals abrasives plant in Lünen has been
using slag tap granulate to produce the high-quality blasting abrasives
ASILIKOS, AFESIKOS and ASILIT and the industrial minerals ASILUX and
ASILGRIP. The plant ranks among the most up to date facilities for the
manufacture of blasting abrasives and decorative construction materials
in Europe.

From cleaning work, through applications in product finishing, to debur-
ring or forming processes, every field of application and every objective
places its own demands on the abrasive to be used. Starting with the
chemical properties and the raw materials used, the hardness of the
abrasive and the grain size and shape, a multitude of factors have to be
taken into account in selecting the correct product. The range of reusa-
ble and non-reusable blasting abrasives in different grain sizes, degrees
of hardness and grain shapes is correspondingly broadly based.
Disposable blasting abrasives are as a rule used for one blasting ope-
ration only, and are then no longer usable. They are mostly used in
cases where the abrasive is heavily contaminated during blasting, or
where collection and reprocessing would be uneconomical. Disposable
blasting abrasives, like ASILIKOS, AFESIKOS or ASILIT, are frequently
based on processed natural or artificial minerals, and are mostly used
in mobile blasting systems, for instance on construction sites.
Reusable blasting abrasives, in contrast, are predominantly used in
stationary systems. They mostly consist of metal (Steel Grit or Steel
Shot), minerals (Garnet) or sodium glass (Glass Beads, Glass Granulate).
After the blasting process, the abrasive is collected, freed of contami-
nation and fines, and then returned into the cycle. In order to maintain
a consistent blasting result, an operating mixture comprising a certain
proportion of used abrasive and a proportion of new abrasive which is
regularly added is defined.
Which blasting abrasive in which variant is best suited for your project
is decided jointly with you in a personal consultation. Our employees
are established experts in their fields, are totally familiar with the cha-
racteristics of our blasting abrasives, and can define their action and
effect on almost every surface. In compiling your individual solution,
they draw on comprehensive theoretical knowledge of the products
and extensive practical experience. They also take account of factors
specific to the individual project such as the quality and sensitivity of
the surface, the desired result and the blasting process to be used. If
required, we will also arrive at the ideal product selection by testing
under conditions identical to those of your application.
Precise selection of the products is decisive in achieving a perfect result. That applies
in particular to blasting projects. Our staff are familiar with all aspects of our products,
and aware of all the individual areas of application and opportunities for use. They will
be pleased to use their know-how to advise you and assist in selecting the ideal blas-
ting abrasive for your project.

Industrial minerals – for characteristic shine and secure grip
The industrial minerals from STEAG Power Minerals are synthetic
mineral substances which do not pollute the environment. Like our
blasting abrasives, they are manufactured from the by-products of
hard coal combustion in power plants, and have a variety of appli-
cations. Used as decorative building materials, they give concrete
slabs, roof tiles and façade elements an unmistakable shine, and
the resistance of roofing felt to abrasion and UV radiation can also
be significantly increased.
Scattered on fresh bitumen, our industrial minerals provide the
necessary grip on new carriageways right from the start.

In the disposal of your blasting abrasives, too, we are pleased to assist
you as your first, expert point of call. On the basis of an analysis of the
contaminated abrasive, we work with certified specialist firms to estab-
lish an individual disposal plan for you and ensure that the used product
is either sent forward for recycling or disposed of at officially designated
locations within Germany. Of course, we provide transparent, end to end
documentation of every step and operation in this service, so that you
can be sure that your blasting abrasive waste has been handled and
treated in accordance with the law, and can provide evidence if required.
Not only in the advice we provide do we
wish to create the greatest possible added
value for the customer – in delivery and
disposal too, we offer you convenient and
flexible solutions and ensure that the blas-
ting abrasives you require will be there for
you in the right place at the right time.
