Less than 100 days away! Doesn’t seem possible, does it? Seems like it was just yesterday that we said goodbye and hugged each other with
comments of “I’ll see you in St. Louis!”
Representing NAREOP, I attended the NAEOP Winter Board Meeting in
New Orleans, LA the third weekend of January. It was a great board
meeting and I applaud the NAEOP Board for their passion and pride in our association, and to care enough to speak up in order to move our
Association into the future. One of the items presented to the NAEOP Executive Board was a request for NAREOP to receive 50¢ per retired member from the NAEOP
dues. This is a practice from years ago which was stopped, but no one seems to remember why. A 50¢ assessment to NAREOP would give us operating funds for each year. As NAEOP
Historian and NAREOP member, Connie Bergeson agreed to search the records in her possession to see if she can find out why this practice stopped. Up to this point, the NAREOP
records on file in the NAEOP national office have been thoroughly searched by Karen Pulaski
and Debbie Geib. However, no information has been located. There was also a search on the formation of the Foundation several years ago with the funding coming through NAREOP.
However, no records seem to exist as to any language with that donation. If we have older members that remember anything about these two issues, I would LOVE to hear from you!
Either send me a written note or an email – my contact information is listed below.
The focus of my President’s message for this issue of The BEAM is to remind everyone of the importance of spreading the word about donations for our Special Projects and Scholarship fund
raisers at conference. Specific details about items available through both raffles are included in this issue. For those unable to attend this conference, I plead with you to send donations in for
both areas if possible. NAREOP is facing challenges this year and the last thing we want to do is raise dues or add a postage fee in order to receive the printed issue of The BEAM. If you are
coming to conference, you can still send in your donations early to either Ellen Gamel (for Special Projects) or Martha Carson (for Scholarships). I know these ladies very well and you
would truly excite their hearts to receive a donation from each of you.
And, speaking of fund raisers, this issue includes tickets for both the Scholarship fund raiser and Special Projects. Please, please don’t delay in copying the tickets (or tear out the page)
and mail with your check to the appropriate person. The 2016 Special Projects table will also include a unique project called Dishing Up Special Prizes. Our board members are donating
beautiful colorful plates, all with a different design. You can purchase the plate for a donation.
On the back of each plate hidden in an envelope is a gift card with a minimum value of $10.00, so everyone who purchases a plate is guaranteed to get money back, or more. The gift cards
will range in value from $10 to $50 – I love this exciting idea and cannot wait to hear from the purchasers how the plate dishes up a special surprise! Special thanks to Ellen Gamel, assisted
by Billie Mikesell, for working so hard on our Special Projects fund raisers. Martha Carson is also working hard to seek donations for the scholarships – wouldn’t it be grand to recognize her
efforts and be able to distribute three scholarships in 2017? A big thank you to our 2015-2016 Board. They are the best!
Congratulations to the newly elected 2016-2017 Board! I know their passion and
commitment is with NAREOP and I look forward to continued excellence. As I close this message, I think of the renewal of our hearts and spirits that comes at Easter. Whatever makes
your heart smile – from worshipping in church on Easter Sunday to sharing chocolate bunnies with grandkids to a good meal with special friends, I hope it comes true for each of you.

My how time flies! We’re still expecting snow, but spring is just around the corner.
I hope you grandmothers and great-grandmothers have obtained a scholarship application for your
grandchild. We anticipate giving two $1,000 scholarships in July and wouldn’t want them to miss out. If you have been a NAEOP member for 5 years and are a current NAREOP member in good standing, your
grandchild is eligible. You can obtain an application by contacting me at the address below, or go to the NAREOP area of the www.naeop.org website. The application deadline is April 1st.
In order to fund our scholarships, we have our 50/50 raffle with the drawings at our NAREOP luncheon at national conference. There will be a 50/50 drawing for conference attendees. Also, there will be lots of silent auction items in
special projects at the scholarship table for you to bid on, so be sure to check them out at conference.
It won’t be long before we’re heading to St. Louis. We look forward to seeing all of you. If you cannot attend this
year, we will be thinking of you. Until next time,

Greetings! Here we are in a new year with new possibilities and opportunities to
do new and exciting things. Nothing can disturb our peace and happiness unless we
allow it to happen. With the help of God, we are more than conquerors.
Continue to reflect on President
Becky’s theme, “Living every moment, Loving beyond words and Laughing everyday.” Use this theme as your
motivator and say to yourself, “the best is yet to come.”
I am busy with my task as your 2015-16 Historian to compile memoirs for the President and the NAREOP’s
archives. Thanks President Becky for the photos.
Members, I need any tidbits you would like to be included in this year’s history. The only problem is I need
you to share the information with me. Can I depend on you? Thanks for your support.

I have been promoting NAREOP and NAEOP to new retirees who have shown
real interest in this association and what it has to offer them. As individuals, we all
have a great deal to contribute by our willingness to become involved, by
stepping outside our comfort zone and by
volunteering on committees and considering running for office. It takes all members working together as one,
sharing ideas in small discussion groups to come up with fresh ideas. Input is critical to finding solutions.
All of the points mentioned above are very important
to building a strong foundation in any association. Please remember that everyone can make a difference. Join us
and come along on the journey of discovery as we move
towards the future with all its possibilities.
One positive thought leads to another
You matter, always have, always will
Look for the good in things, you always find it

Attention!!
“NAREOP GUIDELINES UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED”
Major work on the NAREOP Guidelines began last year and continued in the 2015-2016 year. The proposed changes are necessary to bring NAREOP’s governing rules to match current practice and allow the association to better meet the needs of our members. The proposed changes were presented to the 2014-2015 Executive Board last July and to the membership during the 2015 Annual Meeting in Buffalo, New York. Under this year’s leadership of President-Elect, Rebecca Crabtree, and members of the Guidelines Committee, the proposed Guidelines were reviewed for any final changes and then submitted to the national office for inclusion on the 2015-2016 ballot.
We are very appreciative to the members of the Guidelines Committees for both 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 for their extensive work on such a major task. Kudos to our members who took the time to review the Guidelines and ask questions or make recommendations for additional changes. And we are grateful for the unanimous approval of the proposed Guidelines.
Following this approval, the 2015-2016 Executive Board will now propose changes in the NAREOP Procedures Manual to coordinate the language to be in line with requirements of the Guidelines.
Copies of both documents are available from Rebecca Crabtree, and her contact information is listed on page 8 of this newsletter.

to attend the 2016 North Central Area

Another learning and fun opportunity for NAEOP
Retirees is the 2016 NAEOP Conference in St. Louis, MO. Conference dates are July 13-16, 2016 at the Double Tree,
St. Louis Union Station. Conference information and
registration form can be found at www.naeop.org.
I hope to see all of you at both of these conferences.

North Central Area Representative.
SOUTH CENTRAL AREA In the last issue of the BEAM, I shared
one of my favorite quotes, “All things come to him who waits, provided he waits like a cat at a mouse hole ready to pounce upon opportunity the instant it appears,” and I shared some of my thoughts about being
patient and ready in various parts of my life - including my retired life.
Now I’d like to hear from you, our South Central Area
members. What are some of the volunteer activities and projects you are or have been involved in since you
retired? What are some of the organizations or groups you have been involved in as a retiree? What are some of the
jobs you’ve taken on in your retired life? Please email your responses to me at [email protected] or mail to me
at 318 Shoreacres Blvd., Shoreacres, TX 77571 by April 1,
2016. I’ll include a sampling of your retirement ideas in an upcoming issue of The BEAM and give our fellow NAREOP
members some ideas. Continued in Next Column
As a little incentive, I’ll send a special surprise to the top
two most interesting or unique ideas in each category: - Volunteer activities/projects
- Organization/group involvement - Jobs
By the way, my long-term sub-job as the junior high art
teacher lasted four weeks and was actually pretty fun (once I got the hang of it). I had a certified teacher in the
classroom with me who handled the “official” stuff (attendance, grades, discipline) while I created, lead and
graded all the fun art projects for 115 students in 6 classes. The students were mostly amazing, mostly well-behaved,
and mostly tolerant of my crazy ideas and even a few
costumes! In the end, I was really sad to leave the students but knew there were plenty of other students in
the district who need me! I also have a much deeper appreciation and understanding of all the work, time,
energy and money that teachers put into their jobs. Wow,
what an adventure!! Debbie Wade, CEOE (TX)
South Central Area Representative
SOUTHEAST AREA This must be a very quiet time for the
state and local AEOP associations.
The Southeast Area Professional Development Seminar is fast approaching.
It’s time to make hotel reservations and Seminar registration. It will be hosted by
the Louisiana Association at the Holiday Inn Hotel, 4848 Constitution Avenue, Baton Rouge, April 22 -
24, 2016. Hotel reservations deadline is March 23rd online
at www.crownplaza.com/execcenterbr or by calling the hotel directly at 800-678-4065. The Group Code is NAE.
Room rate is $104 per night + 13% tax (single/double). The Seminar registration is $135, includes Friday night
hospitality, Saturday continental breakfast, Saturday lunch,
and Sunday breakfast buffet. For more information contact Judy Russell, CEOE, Co-Chair at [email protected] o r Debb ie B re land , CEOE , Co -Cha i r a t [email protected]. It’s also time to make your hotel and travel reservations to attend the NAEOP Conference July 13-16 in St. Louis,
Missouri. Remember, people may doubt what you say, but
they will always remember what you do. So do what you say you are going to do. Let them see how you support
NAREOP by attending the annual NAREOP meeting at NAEOP conference, by participating at the Special Projects
tables, and by renewing your membership and paying the
dues at renewal time. Your officers give endless hours of their time for you. Support them and NAREOP.

SOUTHWEST AREA Hello My Retiree Sisters,
After this COLD winter, I know that I
am so looking forward to Spring. I miss all
the blooming, beautiful flowers that will be appearing shortly. I also miss wearing my
capris and sandals. I know I really should not complain as the lowest it was here in
Southern California was 58 degrees one
day.
We in California were excited about attending our 66th
Annual CAEOP conference from February 25-27, 2016 aboard the beautiful Queen Mary in Long Beach. Ms. Wendy
Heslink, CEOE, our NAEOP President-Elect, was our guest
speaker at our general session speaking on “Change is the Opportunity for Growth.” It was wonderful to see and hear
Wendy again.
Utah has announced their annual conference, “Learn, Connect, Grow” to be held on March 12, 2016 at the
Graniote Education Center in Salt Lake City. They will have some classes on technology and others great subjects.
I can hardly wait to see all of you, my dearest friends, at
our NAEOP conference. It will be here before we know it, July 13-16, 2016. Let’s get those suitcases out and plan to
attend the wonderful conference in St Louis, Missouri. I
hope to see all of you there and get to hug each and everyone of you!
In closing, please don’t forget to pay your NAEOP dues! Is it time to renew for you? Thanking you in advance.

VICE PRESIDENT REPORT I hope that everyone had a nice holiday season. As we get ready to
attend the next NAEOP Conference in
St Louis, Special projects is gearing up. A big thank you to all who have
returned tickets and funds to me. We have several items that we are raffling,
and tickets are available in this newsletter. Tickets are

check/money order payable to NAREOP and mail them to me: Ellen Gamel, address listed below.
You do not need to be present to win. If you are not in St. Louis and win, I will happily mail your winnings to
you.
We will also have jewelry and handmade crafts for sale. If you have anything that you would like to donate,
please let me know. Another project we are working on is “NAREOP -
Dishing Up Special Surprises.” This is where we will have
special dishes that you can purchase, and not only receive the dish, but you also get a gift card or cash on
the back of the dish. The dishes and prizes are donated by members of the NAREOP Board of Directors. Thank
you for your donations.
All of the proceeds from the Special Projects/Ways and Means go toward the publishing of our BEAM, so
anything you contribute will be helpful in reaching our goal.
It has been my pleasure to serve as Vice President. I hope to hear from you and see you in St. Louis. God

PRE S I D ENT - E L E C T R EPO RT St. Louis will be here before we know it and I will be starting my year as President of
the Retirees. I’m excited to start this new phase of my life. I never thought I would be
president of a national association but it gets
more exciting the closer the time gets. Also, it is wonderful that I have about half of my Board filled.
Such wonderful ladies.
Life is getting busier and busier. I hope everyone
gets a chance to stop and smell the roses, as they say. Our next big celebration is a wedding, then a graduation
and then St. Louis.
I will be asking many of the Past Presidents and
members of NAREOP for suggestions and help along my
path as I serve as your President. Thank you for having faith in me as I will do my best to make you all proud of
this association.

2 0 1 6 S E R V I C E PR O J E C T S E L E C T E D As recommended by Karen Pulaski as our 2016 Conference Liaison, the NAREOP Service
Project for the 2016 Annual NAEOP Conference and Institute in St Louis is Ready
Readers. This nonprofit organization purpose is to inspire preschool-age children from
low-income communities to become readers.
The Program
Ready Readers is a unique St. Louis nonprofit organization whose purpose is to inspire
preschool-age children from low-income communities to become readers.
Currently, Ready Readers has 570 trained volunteers who read weekly to more than 8,700 children attending 175 early
childhood programs in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Ready Readers is financially supported by the generous grants
and contributions from local corporations, family foundations, trusts, and individuals
Our volunteers read high-quality children’s books every week for 30 minutes to a classroom of preschool children. The
same volunteer always reads to the same children at the same time each week. In addition to weekly reading sessions,
each child receives at least six high-quality, new books throughout the year. Our volunteer readers represent the
population of St. Louis and are recruited from businesses, corporations, colleges, universities, etc.
Ready Readers also gives the classroom teachers the same six gift books with extension activities, based on the
Missouri Early Learning Standards. This year, 420 teachers also participated in Ready Readers professional
development workshops, and all received clock hour credits from the state for attending our workshops.
How Ready Readers Makes A Difference
Ready Readers is premised upon the U.S. Department of Education’s 1985 report, Becoming a Nation of Readers,
found that:
“The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is
reading aloud to children.”
Studies indicate the correlation of early exposure to books with later success in school. Reading aloud to children is a
direct contributing factor in developing a child’s emergent literacy skills. Furthermore, access to books is highly
correlated with reading skills.
This past year, LS Associates studied the changes of behavior and attitudes of the children in the Ready Readers
program compared to those not in our program. After a year of observations, LS Associates “found strong evidence
that Ready Readers program achieves its outcome of increasing children’s interest and engagement with books and
reading.”
How You Can Make a Difference
There are numerous ways individuals can support Ready Readers.
1. Contribute financially ($60 supports the read-aloud program and six (6) new books for a preschool child and their
teacher with extension activities and workshops for a year.)
2. Donate new or gently used preschool books
3. Donate gift cards to major retailers (i.e.: Barnes & Noble, Target and Walmart). Gift cards are encouraged.
