This issue of the NES Connector focuses on “Pulling It All Together” and I hope you enjoy the variety of information that

will be conveyed. I hope by now you have made

arrangements to Navigate Your Way to Success by registering to attend the Annual NAEOP Conference in Buffalo, New York. We are looking forward to seeing a lot of old friends at the conference and

a lot of new members too. Please encourage the members of your association to register for the conference in Buffalo so they can receive the professional development they need to have the competitive edge in their positions in the educational field.

There are some great workshops to attend and some really good tours to go on before and after the conference. They can also share their ideas and network with other office professionals from around the nation and have some new learning experiences.

When I think of “Pulling It All Together” I think of the story of the “Lessons from Geese.” It teaches us that people who share a

common direction and sense of coming together can get where they’re going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the belief in one another. If we have as much sense as geese, we will stay in formation with those who are headed where we want to go and be willing to accept their help, as well as give ours to others. It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing direction. With people as with geese, we are interdependent on each other’s skills and capabilities and unique support of gifts, talents and resources. We need to make sure our sounding off from behind is positive and not something else. In groups where there is great encouragement against great odds, the production is much greater – the power of reinforcement. If we have as much sense as geese, we too will stand by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong. By pulling together we can achieve extraordinary things; it’s called teamwork. We’re here to make a joint effort toward a common goal of making NAEOP the best it can be and we need to pull together and work as a team.

The NAEOP Board pulled together in January at the Winter Board meeting that was held in Tucson, Arizona. The Board members reported on the accomplishments they’ve made in the first six months of the 2014-2015 year. I thank them for all their hard work and “Pulling It All Together” to make decisions that will bring NAEOP up to date.

As we near the 2015 NAEOP Annual Conference we are getting excited to see friends we only see once a year, meet new friends and attend some great workshops. As with any conference, if you have planned one, you know the many issues that can come up during the planning and before conference. We

are very fortunate to have such a very organized and wonderful conference chair to work with, Wendy Heslink. I know if you are attending this conference you will see Wendy and her team will provide you with an outstanding experience.

I do hope you have had the opportunity to login to our new membership/conference database. We are very pleased with how the program is working and how it will help benefit the members with access to renew their membership, register for conference or workshops any time they choose. I read recently that any time a company installs a new

program that it causes excess stress for up to a year while employees and others learn the program. We are still learning the program, but hope that if you have problems in the database that you will contact us and we can help you navigate through with no stress.

It doesn’t seem possible that I have been in this position as your Executive Director for a year. I have learned so much during that time and continue to make changes to help the association become the best it can be. I appreciate all of you encouraging me with notes, emails and phone calls. I knew that in our state association we were a family, but I now know that the NAEOP members are my extended family also. Thank you for your support and encouragement. If you know me very well, you will know that I love Dove chocolate. I not only love the taste of the chocolate but the messages inside the wrappers. Today my message was one that made me smile – “Take a moment, enjoy what you have.” Yes, I really enjoy NAEOP and we have a wonderful association.

I hope you will take time during conference to come by and say hello and allow me to meet each of you. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me anytime.

i have often told NAEOP members how much I appreciate the creative genius of Jim Friesen who does the layout on the NES Connector. Often I send my thoughts and he turns those thoughts into something beyond my wildest dreams. Well now he has become psychic. The theme for this issue is “Pulling It All Together.” He had not seen my editor’s comments when he designed the cover using the geese. As you read below you will see why I know he must be psychic. The theme for this issue really tugged on my heart strings. “Pulling It All Together” can take people in so many directions but

for me it was how much teamwork can and does exist in NAEOP. my favorite story to depict that teamwork is “Lessons from the Geese” which was written in 1972 by Dr. Robert mcNeish. By breaking down this story we see there are some profound lessons to be learned about teamwork and what a powerful effect teamwork is on our organization.

As each goose flaps its wings, they create ”uplift” for the bird following. By flying in a “V” formation, the whole flock adds 71% more flying range than if each bird flew alone. Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone, and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the “lifting power” of the bird immediately in front. When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies at the point position. The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. When a goose gets sick or wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow their fellow member down to help provide protection. They stay with this member of the flock until he or she is either able to fly again or dies. Then they launch out on their own, with another formation, or catch up with their own flock.

The first lesson for us is when we work together harmoniously on teams, sharing common values and a common destination, we will all arrive at the destination quicker and easier, because we are lifted up by the energy and enthusiasm of one another.

The second lesson is sometimes harder to accept because so many of us have “A” type personalities and think we know best. However, people playing on teams will drop out of the group and try to accomplish goals on their own. And, like the geese, they usually discover that they miss the synergy and energy that comes when they are an active part of a cohesive team moving toward their destination. Hopefully, they end up returning to the group and become totally engaged.

Lesson three happens yearly in NAEOP. A change in leadership is a good thing. A good team works best when everyone has the opportunity to serve as a leader as well as a follower. A well- functioning team takes turns doing the hard tasks based on a particular expertise or unique set of skills, talents and resources. The most important part of the change is to be respectful and supportive.

Lesson four is about encouragement. Some of us find it very easy to honk our own horns but in reality that does more damage than good. The best kind of “honking” is affirmation and encouragement of others. This is not a comfortable personality trait for everyone but definitely a trait which can and should be learned and used often!

Lastly is the lesson of help. Teamwork works best when the members do more than just work together, but also are mindful to care for the well-being of each other. I know from personal experience NAEOP soars in this lesson. When my husband died, news traveled around the 50 states. Cards and phone calls of sympathy arrived daily from NAEOP members I didn’t even know. I am also confident this has happened with so many others.

In my opinion, NAEOP lives the Lessons of the Geese. I hope you feel it also as we continue to be “Pulling it all together.”(Both President Napolitano and I used the Lessons from the Geese” as the basis for our articles. We chose to include both as we are coming from different places in our NAEOP lives. Please enjoy!)

As a member of the South Carolina Association of Educational Office Professionals since October 1984, I have served on the board in many positions including President in 1992-93, and membership Recorder that has been a

permanent position since 2000. This year, 2015, I will relinquish this position in April. It has been a wonderful experience and I have met many educational office professionals in the state of South Carolina. As a member of NAEOP & NAREOP, it has been a great experience for me by traveling all over the USA meeting and sharing with other office professionals. I have made many friends over the years. I also served as NAEOP Secretary/Treasurer from 2002-2005 and other NAEOP committees. I also served as NAREOP mid-Atlantic Representative.

Keeping in touch with the National Office and officers, and the SCAEOP officers over these fifteen years has helped me to inform the office professionals about what is available to them. I have assisted many SCAEOP members to receive their PSP certificates. Working

as the SCAEOP Conference Registration Chairman for 15 years, has been an experience. Getting all the information posted and checks deposited, preparing the workshop folders, preparing the registration packet for each conference attendee, and figuring the Conference Attendance Award is a huge task.

I have also kept all conference handbooks for history for SCAEOP and NAEOP for South Carolina. I also have all the NES magazines since I joined in 1987 and all the SCAEOP Newsletters. It is wonderful to be able to research what you are asked by checking the history. I have also set up folders on the computer of information that I have received pertaining to SCAEOP. I have also been in charge of updating the SCAEOP Procedures manual (a task of the SCAEOP-Past Presidents) after each conference so the winners of the awards are listed for history. SCAEOP will have had their 33rd Annual Conference February 27-march 1, 2015.

my organizational skills have proven to be very valuable and I have given my all to these associations.

in one of the faculty rooms in our building there’s a poster that reads, “Pulling Together: Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” I don’t think this simply applies to a team, although it certainly does

relate to NAEOP as a whole. Couldn’t it also be a statement for each of us individually? Getting our thoughts together, keeping our goals and ambitions in mind, then working all our talents/desires together to achieve those goals.

We, as educational office professionals, are jugglers. We handle our homes, our families, and our careers, all at the same time. Sometimes, the things we are handling pulls us in different directions. Unfortunately, with all we do, we sometimes forget to do things for ourselves. Focusing on helping others, we often put our own needs/wants aside, thinking, “I’ll get to that later, when things calm down.” Have you asked yourself lately how long it’s been since you put off doing something for yourself that YOU wanted to do? Pull it together, colleagues!

Think back to five or ten years ago. What were your dreams/goals then? What did you put off for “someday?” Refresh your memory. This is the beginning. Write your ideas down. Keep them where you can see them. This is keeping it together, aka progress! Now, work to reach those goals. Prepare an action plan. Create a timeline. Put your talents to work and go after your dream. Before you know it, by planning your work and working your plan, you’ll have reached your desired goal!

Have you gone as far as you can in your career? Have you received your PSP Certification, or upgraded to a higher one? Have

you volunteered to help others, either in your community or through NAEOP by being on a committee? Share your talents, reward yourself, be proud of your work, do something for YOU - pull it all together! What usually happens is by reaching your goals and giving something of yourself to others, you help them in reaching their goals, too.

Have you invited someone from your school to learn more about NAEOP and become a member, helping to sustain the association? Have you encouraged others to take advantage of the learning opportunities you’ve had through your involvement in this professional organization? Have you invited them to attend the 2015 conference in Buffalo, NY, with you? I hope the answer to every one of those questions is YES!

Don’t forget about the NAEOP membership Incentive, also! The NAEOP Past Presidents have funded the NAEOP membership Incentive Award program since 2011. Each quarter a name will be drawn of each new member for that quarter. The member will receive their second year of membership at no charge. It’s an opportunity for each member you recruit to get a second year of membership free!

Help others get moving on their professional journey by joining NAEOP! All of us coming together to increase our membership, then keeping together by renewing our memberships, means we have worked together and kept NAEOP a success. It all starts with you, helping us by pulling it all together.

Mary C Meyers, Southwest Area Director, Long range planning Committee

in the “Idioms by The Free Dictionary” the definitions for “pulling it all together” are vast and numerous. Literally: to close something. Figuratively: to assemble something; to organize; to arrange; to tidy things up. Yet, I believe to pull together with any

group or anyone; we need to first pull ourselves together. I found this article in the motivateUs.com newsletter and they were most gracious to allow me to share it with all. I hope you enjoy learning seven ways to success for you and to help you pull it all together.

7 Steps to Success – ONLY FOR YOUDiscipline yourself to do what you know you need to do to be the

very best in your field. Perhaps the best definition of self-discipline is this:

“Self-discipline is the ability to make yourself do what you should do when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not.”

It is easy to do something when you feel like it. It’s when you don’t feel like it and you force yourself to do it anyway that you move your life and career onto the fast track.

What decisions do you need to make today in order to start moving toward the top of your field?

Whatever it is, either to get in or get out, make a decision today and then get started. This single act alone can change the whole direction of your life.

Seven Steps to SuccessThere is a powerful seven step formula

that you can use to set and achieve your goals for the rest of your life. Every single successful person uses this formula or some variation of this formula to achieve vastly more than the average person. And so can you. Here it is:

Decide What You Want First, decide exactly what it is you want in each part of your life.

Become a “meaningful specific” rather than a “wandering generality.”

Write it Down Second; write it down, clearly and in detail. Always think on paper.

A goal that is not in writing is not a goal at all. It is merely a wish and it has no energy behind it.

Set a Deadline Third, set a deadline for your goal. A deadline acts as a “forcing

system” in your subconscious mind. It motivates you to do the things necessary to make your goal come true. If it is a big enough goal, set sub-deadlines as well. Don’t leave this to chance.

continued on page 6

As we get older, it seems we dwell more on the way things used to be and less on what the future may hold. I find this true in both my personal and professional life. I still remember rolling my eyes as my mother told us stories

about the “good old days” and now I find myself telling stories of how life used to be. Where my mom’s stories centered on her family struggles in the post-depression era, mine were mostly about the age of abundance we experienced as I was growing up. While she talked of all they sacrificed, I bragged of all we had accumulated. She was from the generation of family first and I belonged to the “me” generation. She was content with what she had and my generation always wanted bigger and better than our parents. We were determined to give our children everything. Somehow, I have finally realized that things aren’t about me. I only play a tiny part in the big picture.

The same is true in our professional lives. We always want more. Affiliating with NAEOP is one way of obtaining more for yourself and others. By affiliating, you have a voice in Advisory Council equal to any other association. You have the ability to apply for awards and scholarships for your association and members. You can write articles for the Keeping Affiliates Active newsletter and help

keep members aware of what is happening in your association.

NAEOP is a lot like a big family. We come from varying jobs in different parts of the country, yet we share common concerns. We each have ideas of what NAEOP can and should be. We have our little differences and spats but when it re-ally matters we all pull together as a family for the common good. I encourage each of you to pull together to help bring NAEOP back to greatness. By sharing about NAEOP with your co-workers and inviting them to visit the NAEOP website, Facebook page, and other Social media sites you can help make growth happen. Our mission states: The mission of the National Association of Educa-tional Office Professionals (NAEOP), the only national professional as-sociation for educational office personnel, is to provide professional growth opportunities, leadership, and service for employees in education through a specifically-designed certification program, quality training, a network for sharing information and ideas, recognition of achievements, and fellow-ship. It is up to all of our members to live up to our mission statement and to promote our association.

Fourth; make a list of everything that you can think of that you are going to have to do to achieve your goal. When you think of new tasks and activities, write them on your list until your list is complete.

Organize Your List Fifth, organize your list into a plan. Decide what you will have to

do first and what you will have to do second. Decide what is more important and what is less important. And then write out your plan on paper, the same way you would develop a blueprint to build your dream house.

Take Action The sixth step is for you to take action on your plan. Do

something. Do anything. But get busy. Get going.

Do Something Every Day Seventh, do something every single day that moves you in the

direction of your most important goal at the moment. Develop the discipline of doing something 365 days each year that is moving

you forward. You will be absolutely astonished at how much you accomplish when you utilize this formula in your life every single day.

Action ExercisesHere are two things you can do to put these ideas into action

immediately. First, decide exactly what you want, write it down with a deadline,

make a plan and take action — on at least one goal — today! Second, determine the price you will have to pay to achieve this

goal and then get busy paying that price — whatever it is.

A year ago, I had double total knee replacement surgery. mentally I had to make a life changing decision and I was determined to do whatever the doctors and physical therapist prescribed. For many years prior to this surgery I wasn’t able to exercise, let alone hardly walk. Following the advice of the medical personnel, l now can walk at a brisk clip and ride a bike again. Yes, pulling it all together is worth it and you need to start with yourself!

Organization?? How important is it? Ask five different people this question and it’s possible that you may get five different answers. However, if you ask anyone who is dependent on others about how important organization is,

you will get a very firm and resounding “VERY” as a result. As a past middle and high school principal, and current assistant superintendent, organization is a key ingredient to a successful work experience. In the fast-paced world of educational administration, it oftentimes feels as though there are several “plates spinning” and more seem to get added than those that are removed. In these instances, it is important to have team members around you who can help “pull it all together.”

Over the years, I have had many opportunities to mentor aspiring principals and administrators as well as speak to groups and classes at our nearby university. One of the questions that seems to always surface is “What’s the best piece of advice you can give a new principal?” my answer is always the same. “You need to hire a partner, a side-kick, a right-hand that you can completely rely on and trust completely.” An exceptional assistant can make your job half as difficult or twice as chaotic. In my roles in educational leadership, I have been extremely fortunate to have three dynamic assistants. Not only were they able to balance their responsibilities, but they kept me on point, on time, and on guard.

I have always felt that professional development is vital for growth and improvement. The second you stop trying to improve is when you begin your downfall. As someone in a leadership role, it is also important to foster the hunger for development in those who work on your team, including your assistant. Not only does it improve work performance, but it also increases workplace happiness and satisfaction.

In a world with instantaneous connectivity, more and more people are growing impatient. When a call, email, or text is sent, the sender expects immediate feedback, not the 24-hour response time about which we are so accustomed to hearing. In addition to multi-forms of communication, there are also the unscheduled, albeit critical, interruptions that walk through the door at what often seems like the worst possible moment. Again, with all of these “spinning plates,” it is so important that those in the essential positions are able to “pull it all together.”

As you prepare for your upcoming annual conference, I challenge everyone to identify an area you feel least comfortable with and make that area a priority for your development. In addition, if you haven’t begun to utilize many of the digital office applications (i.e., Google/Apple/Windows Apps), organizational tools (i.e., online calendars), or social media (i.e., Facebook, Twitter), I encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone. By doing so, you just may find new ways to help “pull it all together.”

i was trying to “Pull It Together” for this article and it took me all over the place. Take this article journey with me and see if you see yourself in some of these situations.

When I first chose this topic I thought about ‘IT’ (Information Technology). I bought a new microsoft Surface Pro 3, microsoft Office 2013 and started utilizing microsoft OneNote. I learned Apple had an Office for IOS. So many topics to choose from, so much information to share.

Then I thought about all the things ‘it’ can cover. We all are juggling family, job, and personal interest.Just thinking about work gave me ideas for topics to discuss.

Trying to make sure everyone has what they need. Classroom supplies, payroll, expenses paid, and receiving done…the list goes on, but, we get it done. Working eight, ten, even twelve hour days we make sure the job is done. And don’t we feel good when that is accomplished.

Then the holidays hit and OH Boy. Where to begin. Church programs (soothes the soul), family gatherings (whose house first?), getting ready for family gatherings (cooking, cleaning, all on a short time schedule Thanksgiving was just 3 weeks ago), SHOPPING!!!

I live across the street from Kroger’s and I just look out the door and know I don’t want to go there, but I have to get my ingredients. The madhouse of holiday shopping!

Once I pulled it all together it turned out to be the best Christmas in a while. my granddaughter and I baked new recipes and had a wonderful time in the kitchen. Then we dusted off the sewing machine and made doll clothes (I forgot how much I love to sew).

You have to get there, make it fun, interesting and pull it together! The last thing that came to me as I pulled this article together was

pulling together us.

Taking a moment to enjoy the quiet after the rush of the holidays, I was flipping through TV channels and came across a British TV show that taught women to love themselves.

It was about learning to accept and love what you have. They were first taught to dress their body type starting with great foundations and some simple things to make you feel good about yourself. It taught simple things we all read about or hear from our doctors, but don’t do anything about (changing our diet), or not correctly (wearing the wrong foundation).

It taught them to take care of themselves using simple things like:Never compare yourself to othersAlways moisturize damp arms & legsKeep movingEat oily fish & less saltDrink dandelion tea

These things seem simple and unimportant to some, but the real lesson was loving who you are, as you are.

For some of us it is the job, the family, and sometimes a combination of all sorts of things pulling us in many directions.

It is not always as bad as we think.Stop, take a deep breath, and reevaluate what is really needed first.

What is the foundation?Pull it all together, then stand back and admire the finished product.

Trying to do it all | Donita Smith, CEOE, High School/Career & Technical Education Council Chairman

patricia Stelmach, CEOE, president Elect, professional Development/partners reaching Out Committee Chairman

As I ponder how to “pull it all together” I wonder if that is possible each and every day. There are so many things that take place during a given day and even with the best of intentions it all falls apart at some point. The best of plans

sometimes go astray. What about the office professional who walks into the office on

monday, planner in hand, ready for the beginning of the work week. While getting everything situated at her desk the phone begins to ring; teachers come in with questions, each thinking his or hers is the most important issue of the day; the principal calls in sick; the maintenance crew arrives as the doors are opening to repair ceiling tile, a request that was sent in weeks ago; and the other secretary is out of the office for a doctor’s appointment. In this situation, pulling it all together now becomes a bit more complex and stressful in working through the day. Take a moment or two, regroup, form a new plan, take one thing at a time, put a smile on your face, and answer the phone.

Someone in the family calls with a crisis — maybe transportation to a doctor, groceries, ride to church, help with the house, a visit. These may sound somewhat simple things to take care of and perhaps

they are but “pulling it all together” may be difficult when there are several calls per day and you try to take care of your own life as well as assist the family. It is possible for this to become more stressful than work situations and pulling it all together requires lots of smiles, hugs, and kisses and most of all patience as you work through the day, the week, sometimes the hour.

There is no magic formula for pulling it all together as each of us are individual, diverse people. What works for one is disastrous for the other. I believe for all of us the art of pulling it all together can be accomplished with patience, flexibility, willingness to change, and the ability to give and take.

So the next time your wonderful three-page, color-coded plan literally flies out the window at the drop of a hat or within the first sixty seconds of the work day, stop, breath, regroup, pull it all together, and navigate your way to an amazing day!

NAEOp members as much as possible. Members will be served on a first-come, first-served basis for this complimentary service by our members for our members. Look for conference committee members wearing red 2015 NAEOp Conference sweaters when you arrive. if there is a driver available he/she will be more than happy to take you directly to the hotel. Feel free to tip them if you wish and as you feel is appropriate, as they are offering this service free of charge. if no driver is available, the NFTA-Metro and Metro Bus service from the airport is available during the weekday. There is an Airport-Downtown Express shuttle that runs weekdays every 30 minutes for $2.75 per person. The regular Metro Bus runs through the heart of the city, as well. it is the most economical way to get to and from the airport. One-way fare at the time of this printing is $2. information on schedules and maps can be found at www.metro.nfta.com. in addition, information on the Airport Taxi Service can be found at www.buffaloairporttaxi.com. if arriving after hours or on the weekend for the Metro, sharing a taxi with 1-2 other people may be a good alternative. Other services are being researched and if/when they become available, information will be put on the NAEOp 2015 Conference webpage.

Tours: All tours offered during the week of conference are organized by gray Line Niagara Tours. Conference week tour descriptions can be found, and reservations made, online at https://graylineniagarafalls.com/register/naeop-conference. Tours require a minimum of 20 people to run. The tour reservation deadline is June 25, 2015. Please keep in mind a valid US Passport is required for you to enter into Canada and return to the US.

Because of the interest in the New York City post-conference tour, it has been confirmed as a definite departure. The people at Horizon Club Tours have graciously offered to continue taking reservations for this tour until Friday, May 1st, unless that tour sells out prior to that date. So, it’s not too late to register for this amazing trip to beautiful New York

City! To get more information and to register, go to http://www.horizonclubtours.com/naeop2015 or contact Kristen Mayer at Horizon Club Tours, 716.929.3630 or 800.242.4244. She is available Monday — Friday, 9 AM - 5 pM (EST). if more than 40 individuals register for this tour, the price is reduced by about $70 per person, so the more the better!

The New York tour will require return airfare from a New York airport, not from Buffalo, so if you plan to take this tour, please be sure to not book a round-trip ticket to/from Buffalo. For more information and to make your reservation for this trip, go to http://www.horizonclubtours.com/naeop2015. The cost for this 4- day/three night tour is $1,341 per person, based on double occupancy.

Due to there being little interest in the post conference tour to Toronto, Canada, it has been decided to cancel that tour option. A minimum number of reservations had to be made in order to offer the tour, and unfortunately, that number hasn’t been reached.

Keep watching for information on the 2015 Conference app, and other last-minute conference correspondence, as changes are inevitable. Are you getting NAEOp email updates? if not, please send your email address to Jenny Jackson at the NAEOp office ([email protected]) as it is likely they do not have your correct email address. it only takes a minute and you’ll be kept up to date on all things NAEOp! You can also check out the NAEOp Facebook and pinterest pages!

ATIRE: Business attire is appropriate and recommended for all daytime sessions. pSp recipients often wear formal or semi-formal attire; other attendees dress in like fashion or wear business attire for the Awards Banquet. All are acceptable. The installation Banquet is a “dressy” evening and attendees normally wear formal, semi-formal or Sunday dress.

if you have any questions about the 2015 Conference, please contact Wendy Heslink, Conference Chairman, at [email protected].

A – Part I & C – Part IICOMMUNICATIONS IN THE 21ST CENTURY FOR THE OFFICE AND SCHOOL COMMUNITY— Dr. David O’Rourke, Erie 2 CC BOCES Words like Doodle or Tweet seem silly — but they are impacting the adult world of information and communication. Changes in our school communities and the ways they communicate are changing rapidly. As a result, leadership teams in schools need new strategies and tools to keep up with rapid demands for information and communication.

Participants in this workshop will learn about new sources of pressure for information, assess their current communication practices, and learn new tools and strategies for dealing with both the “inputs” and “outputs” of an effective communication strategy in the education sector.

Participants will learn about resources and templates for effective written and web-based communications. In a fun hands-on afternoon technology session, participants will learn about the role of search tools to help navigate the crush of information on the internet.

Participants will also learn about the impact of Social media on sharing and gathering information and communications. They will begin to learn about the purposes of their own Twitter feed, LinkedIn Account, and other Social media communication tools, and develop some of these tools for their own professional work.Technology will be provided for this session. However, participants are encouraged to bring their smart phone, if they own one.

B – WHAT WAS I THINKING? ETHICAL DECISION MAKING FOR EDUCATIONAL OFFICE PROFESSIONALS— Dr. Susan Gray Every day professionals find decisions are frequently colored in

shades of gray. There are always choices to consider that are ethically sandwiched in between laws, social and political pressures and personal or institutional self-interests. The hardest decisions can be so hard that regular operations in a school district office or a school district are jeopardized. How do we maintain high ethical and moral grounds in our professional decision making to best serve the needs of our bosses, our students and our school districts? This program will ask participants to share and solve examples of educational office professionals’ ethical dilemmas, considering the following information from the presenter’s research that will be shared as part of the seminar presentations:1. What is meant by “Being Ethical” for an educational office

professional, in behavior and in communication?2. What are some of the most frequently reported areas of school

district office ethical conflict and dilemmas for the executive office professional?

3. How do we handle others whose behavior, communication and values seem to go over the line?

4. What are some reasons why an educational office professional might make a poor ethical decision?

5. What are some “best practices” that help to support good ethical decision making for an educational office professional and to support similar good ethics in district office staff?

6. What do educational office professional organizations include as ethical expectations and guidelines?Additionally, participants will share the most common areas of

ethical conflicts from their experiences as executive assistants, along with “best practices” that have successfully prevented and/or resolved ethics issues that they commonly face working in school district offices.

D – 1 – UNDERSTANDING OUR BEHAVIOR STYLES AND THOSE OF OTHERS: Building Effective Communication and Positive Working Relationships— Dr. Susan GrayDo you sometimes meet someone with whom you feel an immediate connection? Or after returning to your office from a meeting, do you find yourself thinking that not much got accomplished and then hear someone else say what a great meeting it was? What are the sources of these feelings? Individual differences in behavior styles can frequently account for the different perceptions we may have of the same experience. Our own behavior styles influence how we think, work, communicate, process information, and make decisions. These behavior styles can affect our interests, personalities, motivations, temperaments and ways of interacting with the world. Differences in our behavior styles can result in difficulties in communication and interpersonal relationships in our work environments. And of course every person with whom we interact has their own behavior style. This workshop will focus on understanding behavior styles of ourselves and others to promote positive interactions with our colleagues at work, as well as with members of our constituencies. We will complete an analysis of ourselves using a behavior styles instrument (DISC). We will do a comparison with the behavior styles of others to identify and practice different ways of interacting more effectively. Included in

discussion and activities will be how to deal specifically with different groups we deal with in the school environment.

D – 2 – SUPER WOMAN and EDUCATIONAL OFFICE PROFESSIONAL— Dr. Susan GrayDo you find yourself in the grocery store at midnight shopping for food for your child’s birthday party tomorrow? Do you find yourself going through the dirty clothes pile for the “cleanest” pair of dirty socks for your child to wear to school tomorrow? In our busy world of work and home, we can frequently find ourselves overwhelmed by conflicting demands for our time and energy. In this conference session we will explore the many demands on us as working women, sharing particular issues at work and at home that create stress and frustration as we attempt to meet our many responsibilities from these two arenas. We will discuss techniques you can use for time management and stress management you can use as a busy professional.

E – SPEAKER’S BUREAUSharpen your presentation skills in two days of specialized training and a practice session. Your mini-presentation will be evaluated by judges and your inclusion in the Speakers Bureau will be considered. members seeking inclusion in the Bureau will be given the opportunity to train, practice, and be evaluated during the 2015 NAEOP Institute. Participants must attend both days of training.

This is the third year for the presentation of Speaker’s Bureau. The group from the first year, more commonly known as the “Great Eight,” had so much fun they had a reunion party last year in Portland. Last year, the “Dynamic Dozen” were a great group of ladies who were not necessarily interested in becoming presenters but ended the class with a new sense of self-confidence and a feeling of accomplishment. The hope is that participants from both previous classes will sign up to attend Briefing #904 – Speakers Bureau: A Cracker Barrel Session with Allie Fay matthews, CEOE as the facilitator, to give feedback on how best to improve the Speaker’s Bureau class.

Participating in this briefing will help you get started and answer most, if not all, of your questions as you take the first steps toward PSP Certification!

804 – PERFORMING THROUGH SELF–LEADERSHIP Allie Faye Matthews, CEOEIt is so easy to go through life thinking you are average and that there is nothing special about you. Sometimes we lose perspective because life can be so routine. There is nothing ordinary about getting up, being able to breathe, to see or think — something we take for granted daily.

By the nature of your position as an office professional you are often seen as a leader in your school or office, but before you can lead others, you must first learn to lead yourself. Where are you on your path to self-leadership? How do you manage your journey of self-reliance that will propel you to achieve peak performance?

Participants in this interactive session will explore the concepts of why self-leadership is not something that is done to you, it is rather something you do for yourself.

SESSION 9FRIDAY, JULY 24, 20158:30 AM – 10 AM901 – OASIS IN THE OVERWHELM – IN DEPTH!Millie GrenoughA more in depth look at the powerful and practical strategies that can make an immediate difference in your daily life and how to re–wire your own brain from frenzy to focus.

This briefing will offer information about: Appointing a Power of Attorney for health care; making a will; having a written plan for your funeral wishes and who should have this information, and discussing your plans and wishes with your spouse/children. Talking with those who may survive you is important and difficult as no one wants to know that death is a part of life. We will have a chat about all of these, as well as others you may want to talk about — so that when we make that final trip, our wishes will be granted and our survivors will also have peace of mind.

904 – SPEAKER’S BUREAU – A CRACKER BARREL SESSION

The Campus, the birthplace of the Arts and Crafts in America, is the best-preserved and most complete complex of buildings remaining in the United States of the “guilds” that evolved as centers of craftsmanship and philosophy during the late 19th century. Author, lecturer, and entrepreneur Elbert Hubbard began to develop the Campus in 1897. It was one of several utopian societies that formed during the Arts and Crafts movement in response to the shoddy, mass-produced goods of the Industrial Age. The campus would become a Mecca for master craftsmen and a gathering place for notable artists, authors, philosophers, social reformers, and power brokers. The Campus, designated a National Historic landmark district (NHl) in 1986, contains 9 of the original 14 structures including the Inn, the Chapel, the Print Shop, the Furniture Shop, and the Copper Shop. So come visit and discover the rebirth of the Roycroft Campus as if Elbert Hubbard and the Roycrofters never left.

The National Association of Educational Office Professionals Board of Directors is always seeking out better ways to serve you, the members of NAEOP. What better way to do this than through professional development. Changes are coming for all

of us as we finalize plans for online professional development through NAEOP thus giving all members the opportunity to complete classes online. All details will be released at the July 2015 Conference in Buffalo with a beginning date for classes in September 2015. Keep your eyes and ears open! You don’t want to miss out on this opportunity!

Currently ten field service forms have been submitted and approved for members of the elected board to attend state or area conferences sharing information about NAEOP, presenting workshops, and installing officers. If your affiliate is planning a spring conference you still have time to submit a field service request. Simply go to the NAEOP website at naeop.org. Choose the “Programs” tab under Professional Development. You will find all the information you are looking for as well as the “Field Service Request Form”. Paperwork

Daily we navigate our lives at work, home, and while having fun. During our navigation we want success and we discover it may not always be easy, but with hard work, drive, and passion, we know it’s possible to achieve!

How do you rate your success? Is it based on your salary, value of your home, competitive hobby or educational level? more simply you may evaluate your success by day-to-day opportunities, such as meeting the needs of an upset student or disgruntled parent. Conceivably your success can also be valued through the lives of others, such as your children or grandchildren and their accomplishments. Whatever scale you utilize to determine success in your life, remember YOU must be true to yourself and believe in yourself first.

So what path have you chosen to climb the scales of success? Have you considered walking the path alongside your NAEOP colleagues? As a member of NAEOP, you know the many benefits membership has to offer including the Professional Standards Program (PSP). As the NAEOP PSP Chairman, I would like to remind you of the opportunity you have to join the ranks of thousands by obtaining your certification in the PSP. many options are offered to meet your educational background. You may also qualify for the highest distinction in the program, known as the Certified Educational Office Employee (CEOE).

Serving as the Pennsylvania PSP Chairman for the past nine years I have discovered many educational office professionals had met the

qualifications to apply for the program, but simply didn’t know where to start! Have you thought the application process was too complicated? Or you simply didn’t know where to begin? Well consider this as an invitation to be enlightened, and join me at the 2015 NAEOP Annual Conference and Institute where I will be offering two PSP sessions. One session will be a program overview and the other will be an opportunity to review your application and provide specific application processing guidance.

I hope you will come join me at the 2015 NAEOP Annual Conference and Institute in Buffalo, New York, from July 22-25, 2015, to learn more about PSP. We can also assist you to continue down your professional path of success, as we will be offering 37 briefings to choose from, general sessions providing important association business, along with keynote speakers.

Conference information, benefits of membership and much more valuable information can be obtained on the NAEOP website at www.naeop.org.

I hope to see you in Buffalo this July where President Napolitano will encourage you to “Navigate Your Way to Success in NAEOP.” If you have any questions pertaining to the PSP or I can be any assistance, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or at 412-342-4386.

DCOUNCIL CORNER

“We cannot become what we need to be, remaining what we are.”

– Max Depree

As a member of NAEOP, you are fortunate to have an extensive member support network. As an educational office professional, you are exposed on a daily basis to teaching and learning strategies. These resources are

important tools to promoting ongoing self-growth. Each of us has something about ourselves that we feel can be improved. The trick is to set your priorities and address the areas that you want to change one-by-one. Take advantage of local, state and national professional development opportunities [NAEOP in Buffalo, NY 2015]. It may

be as simple as learning a new skill or the challenge may be more complex. make your vision of what your ideal self would look like attainable. Be a leader. When you are positive and encouraging, you build a more optimistic attitude for yourself and others. Remember, this isn’t about making yourself liked by others, but about becoming someone you truly want to be, which will in turn attract the right people and opportunities into your life. Each day is the perfect opportunity to have the best day of your life.

Laura A. Nossel, Elementary Council Chairman

Cathy McHenry, CEOE, Higher Education Council Chairman

2015! Seriously? Where has the time gone? Yes, folks, it is seriously 2015. It seems like we were all just in Portland at the 2014 NAEOP Annual Conference. Oh, well, that just means we are closer to the 2015 NAEOP Annual Conference

that is being held in beautiful Buffalo, New York, July 22 – 25, 2015!Every year I make a New Year’s resolution and every year I do

not keep it. This year I came up with my resolution with some help from NAEOP President Betty Napolitano and the New York State Association of Educational Office Professionals (NYSAEOP). I decided I was going to make my work life and personal life run more effectively and efficiently by keeping them separate from each other. Every night I take work home, I have shared my cell number with both students and faculty, and I normally take work with me on vacations. THIS HAS TO STOP!

President Napolitano provides themes to the board members for each article, and her theme for the spring edition of the NES could not have been more fitting for the start of a new year than Pulling it All Together. When I read the theme in December, I decided to combine it with ideas I received at a workshop I attended. This past November, I was fortunate enough to attend the NYSAEOP’s Conference and had such a wonderful learning experience. In addition to the learning experience, the group welcomed me with open arms. I made so many new and awesome friends, which made the learning experience all the more fun and enjoyable. One of the workshops at the conference was on time management. I attended the workshop thinking this is going to be like other time management workshops I have attended, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. We talked about the time management of others around us and how other’s lack of

time management skills could derail us. Then as a group, we brainstormed ideas of how we can prevent this from happening so we can focus on the tasks we need to complete in our own personal lives so work doesn’t interfere. I came back to work all fired up to make things happen, and shared the information with my co-workers. As a team we started discussing how we could implement some of the ideas from the conference in addition to creating other ideas that would work for our group.

Pulling it All Together – I had everyone on board at work, but I realized I had to get myself on board at home, as well. Even if I left work at work, I still had to figure out my personal time. I went back to my workshop notes and one of my biggest problems jumped off the page at me. I never say NO! That’s right. If someone asks me to do something for them, I immediately say, “Sure, no problem”. At the workshop, we discussed we have to stop doing this. I can provide ideas on how they can accomplish their tasks themselves or recommend someone else who may be able to help, but before I say that three letter word (yes), I really need to think if I can actually do it. Will it interfere with anything else I have scheduled; will it interfere with my promised family time; and can I give the task the 100% it deserves? Since January 1, this has been my hardest task for organizing my time and pulling it all together. Like most of you, I am a giver and it has been a huge struggle for me to say no to people. But you know what? They understand. They appreciate my honesty when I say “I cannot give 100% to them right now.” They take my suggestions on how they

can accomplish the tasks themselves or someone they didn’t even think would love to help out.

This is how I am Pulling it All Together. I have a suggestion on how you can begin Pulling it All Together, also. Start by putting the 2015 NAEOP Annual Conference on your calendar for July 22 – 25, 2015, and join us in Buffalo, NY, for an awesome time of workshops and networking with other NAEOP members. The HEC will be having lunch on Friday, July 24th. We will have two hours, which will be a wonderful time for us to network and discuss the ever-changing world of higher education. I am currently working on our educational plans and plan to have a panel discussion on nontraditional students and how they fit and interact at our institutions.

When you were marking your calendar, you may have noticed the days of the conference are Wednesday thru Saturday. This is not an

error. After listening to member’s feedback, the association decided to condense the conference to allow the opportunity for more members to be able to attend. All the excitement will still be there; we are just switching up the days of the week.

While you are reading this edition of the NES Connector, please pay attention to the items we are selling at the conference. First, we have some awesome, soft sweaters with the conference logo of NAEOP GIFT – Gathering Information for Tomorrow. Second, we are selling tickets to win a beautiful, one-of-a-kind, hand-blown piece of glass in the shape of a cat. This piece was made special for us by Baker O’Brien, who is a world-renowned artist. Lastly, more items will be available for sale at the Conference.

As always, please feel free to call or email me with any questions, concerns or ideas you may have.

As you’ll recall, during the 2014 elections, NAEOP members approved changing the name of the State Department Council to the Education Partners Council. There are over 200 members on the NAEOP membership list who are not

listed in any of the council areas. We’re hoping that with the name change to “Education Partners,” that our council will grow.

The annual meeting of the Education Partners Council will be held on Friday, July 24 from Noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo, Buffalo, New York. members will have the opportunity to

learn what is happening within each of our organizations, as well as to network with colleagues from across the country. So, don’t forget to sign up for our Council lun-cheon on your registration for the NAEOP conference. I look forward to seeing my fellow Education Partners council members in July in New York.

Theresa Coté, CEOE, Chairman

NAEOP offers a variety of resources to all first-time Annual Conference and Institute attendees to make sure they get the most out of their first conference experience. One of the biggest resources for all first-time attendees is being

assigned a mentor. mentors are NAEOP members who have been to conferences before and can share their knowledge about the policies, procedures, events, and NAEOP in general, with their mentees. Over the years, a great deal of positive feedback has been received not only by first-time attendees, but from the mentors. Not only do the mentors provide guidance, but often new friendships are formed that last for many years.

Have you been to a NAEOP conference before? Would you like to meet a first-timer at the 2015 conference, help them meet other attendees, explain the infamous “sharing of the pins” program, answer their questions, guide them through the full agenda for the week and alleviate any/all of their anxiety regarding attending their first national conference? mentors are needed! Please email mary Beth Smith, First-Timer Event Chairman, at [email protected] if you’d like to help us and a first-time conference attendee. The rewards are numerous, for both you and the first-timer!

Ypatricia Thompson, Foundation Treasurer

Have you ever wondered what the NAEOP Educational Foundation is and just exactly what it does? Well, you’re not alone. The Foundation was formed in July 1984 by the general membership during the 50th anniversary annual meeting and has been in operation ever since.

The mission and purpose of the Foundation includes enhancing the educational growth of NAEOP members by creating and promoting personal development opportunities through various means, endowing educational scholarships, and providing support for the home office of the Foundation and the Association.

The strategies used to attain the goals utilize fund-raising campaigns, marketing educational services, seeking additional sources of unrestricted revenue, and maintaining the national office and developing building improvements. The Foundation oversees many funds, i.e., Friends of the Foundation, Louise Henderson Nelson Building Fund, Lois E. Lillie and Francis “Jackie” Evans Retired Professionals Funds, Educational Fund, mona Smith member Dependent Scholarship, marion T. Wood member Scholarship Fund, Educational Endowment, marion T. Wood Endowment, Disaster Relief Fund, and, last but not least, Paving the Way memorial Garden.

One of the goals of the Foundation Board of Trustees is to expand the lines of communication between the NAEOP membership and the Foundation.

One of the greatest assets of the NAEOP members is their willingness to give their time and services to promote the organization. For several years, the Foundation has had State Liaison Representatives, but now more than ever, it would be beneficial to enlarge the liaison base to include affiliate representatives. As more members become knowledgeable about the purpose of the Foundation and how it serves as a viable part of NAEOP, the more those same members can share that information with others.

Those desiring to serve as liaison representatives will be the PR connection to impart information about the Foundation to their local organizations, have an opportunity to participate and help the Foundation during conference time, and become part of a pool of applicants whereby persons can be selected to serve on the Foundation Board when vacancies occur.

North Central Area Professional Development Days - April 24 and 25, 2015

The Nebraska EOPA is looking forward to hosting the North Central Area Professional Development Days in Lincoln, Nebraska, April 24 and 25. This is an excellent opportunity to attend some outstanding educational sessions and network

with office professionals throughout the area. We will also offer activities for retirees, and a reduced registration rate.

The “official” NCAPDD will begin Friday evening and conclude by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Optional workshop sessions will be offered 8:00-5:00 on Friday. We will be based at the Holiday Inn Downtown with room rates of $99/night for up to four people. The Holiday Inn is located in our newly redesigned Haymarket district. You will find many unique shops, art galleries and restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.

Friday evening and Saturday sessions will be held at the historic Grand manse which is just across the street. The Grand manse is a designated historical site and previously was the home to our United States Post office, federal offices, a bank, and the federal courthouse. The Grand manse has been restored to its original beauty and now

offers a wonderful place for conferences, weddings, special occasions, as well as some residential units. Our opening and closing keynote sessions, as well as area lunch meeting, will be held in the old federal courtroom. The last trial to be held here was the Wounded Knee trials in the 1970s.

If you are working on your PSP certificate and need some education credit, we are very excited to be offering 15 hours of education credit! In order to receive the education credit, you will need to attend all of the Friday sessions, and selected sessions on Saturday. If you don’t need the education credit, you are invited to attend these sessions for in-service credit.

Registration form and additional information will be posted on the Nebraska EOPA website: http://neopa.unl.edu/ and the North Central Area page: http://naeop.org/membership/area-directors/north-central-area.html.

Please contact me if you have any questions ([email protected]). You are all invited to attend and hope to see many of you in Lincoln, Nebraska!
