1300L 1776: America and Britain at War** MCCULLOUGH
But from this point on, the citizen-soldiers of Washington’s army were no longer to be ghting only for the defense of their country, or for their rightful liberties as freebornEnglishmen, as they had at Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill and through the long siege at Boston. It was now a proudly proclaimed, all-out war for an independentAmerica, a new America, and thus a new day of freedom and equality. At his home in Newport, Nathanael Greene’s mentor, the Reverend Ezra Stiles, wrote in his diary almostin disbelief: us the Congress has tied a Gordian knot, which the Parl [iament] will nd they can neither cut, nor untie. e thirteen united colonies now rise into anIndependent Republic among the kingdoms, states, and empires on earth... And have I lived to see such an important and astonishing revolution?
900L We are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball NELSON
Rube ran his ball club like it was a major league team. Most Negro teams back then weren’t very well organized. Didn’talways have enough equipment or even matching uniforms. Most times they went from game to game scattered among dierent cars, or sometimes they’d even have to “hobo” — which means hitch a ride on the back of someone’s truck to get to the next town for a game. But not Rube’s team. ey were always well equipped, with clean, new uniforms, bats, and balls. ey rode to the games in fancy Pullman cars Rube rented and hitched to the back of the train. It was something to see that group of Negroes stepping out of thetrain, dressed in suits and hats. ey were big-leaguers.
300L Princess Posey and the Next-Door Dog GREENE
“We have to stop now,” said Miss Lee. “It’s time for reading.” “Ohhh...” A disappointed sound went up around the circle. “Here’s what we’ll do.” Miss Lee stood up. “You are all very interested in dogs. So this week, you can writea story about your own dog or pet. en you can read it to the class.” Everyone got excited again. Except Posey. She didn’t have a pet. Not a dog. Not a cat. Not a hamster. “ose of you who don’t have a pet,” Miss Lee said, “canwrite about the pet you hope to own someday.” Miss Lee had saved the day! Now Posey had something to write about, too. Posey told her mom about Luca’s puppy on the way home.

An Equal O
pportunity Employer
Dear G
eorgia parents, I cannot em
phasize enough the importance of reading and literacy to your child’s academ
ic development. Literacy is the
building block upon which other academ
ic attainment is built; it is a crucial focus for us here at the D
epartment of
Education and a major determ
ining factor in your child’s success. W
e have a number of literacy initiatives underw
ay at the state level, from the Striving R
eader Com
prehensive Literacy initiative to our cross-agency partnerships w
ith the Get G
eorgia Reading cam
paign to donation drives that aim to get
books into the hands of as many G
eorgia students as possible. W
e are also pleased to provide Lexile® m
easures -- which m
easure a student’s reading ability – on selected test reports. As a w
ay to monitor the developm
ent of your student’s reading ability, the Lexile® Fram
ework for R
eading has been linked w
ith the Georgia M
ilestones assessment system
. This allows teachers, students and parents to gauge the status
and progression of a students’ reading ability. Lexile m
easures are a resource both for understanding a student’s reading ability and finding reading material appropriate
to that level. Parents, teachers, and students can use the Lexile measure of text com
plexity to determine w
hether a text is too easy, too difficult, or just right for a student. R
ather than being just a “score,” the Lexile measure is a tool for parents,
educators and students. Parents, I encourage you to engage in your child’s academ
ic development and use Lexile m
easures to find books that m
atch your child’s reading level. The Lexile® M
ap provides a sampling of titles m
atched to appropriate levels of reading ability, and you can use the “Find a B
ook” search tool to build custom reading lists based on Lexile range and personal
interests, and check availability at the local library. To learn m
ore about Lexile measures, visit w
ww
.gadoe.org/lexile.aspx and w
ww
.georgiastandards.org/resources/pages/tools/lexileframew
orkforreading.aspx. You will be able to access the
popular “Find a Book” tool and other helpful guidance on selecting reading m
aterial matched to your student’s
reading ability. These resources can be used to support and monitor a child’s progress tow
ard becoming a better
reader. A love for reading can m
ake all the difference in a child’s academic and personal success. I urge you to take advantage of
these resources and join us in our efforts to get Georgia’s students reading.
Sincerely,
R
ichard Woods
