The Rulings on using images of animate beings in the children’s books and classrooms.

“Nevertheless, our fuqaha’ have stated that if there is a need or necessity, there is nothing wrong with making images and there is no sin on the image maker in that case, because cases of necessity make forbidden things permissible.” (Question no. 130353, www.islamqa.com)

“It is permissible to use images for teaching children.”(Question number 13716, www.islamqa.com)

“There is nothing wrong with teaching children the alphabet by writing letters with appropriate pictures, even if they are pictures of animate beings, because of the concession allowing “dolls for girls”, and because concessions may be granted to small children that are not granted to adults. Putting up these pictures will not do any harm, because they are imagesthat are permitted, unless the pictures are put up with the aim of venerating the imagesthemselves; if there is no such intention and the pictures are permitted, there is nothing wrong with having them on the ground or hung on the wall.”(Question no. 170060, www.islamqa.com)

“After stating the positive and negative aspects, the Islamic attitude should be clear insha Allah. The more negative points there are, the closer the ruling is to stating that it is haraam, and the more it is able to avoid the negative aspects, the closer it is to being permissible. This tells us that it is essential to establish companies that will produce Islamic cartoons by means of whichall positive virtues may be instilled and all harmful and evil aspects can be avoided.”(Question no. 71170, www.islamqa.com)

“there is nothing wrong with a child looking at some pictures in order to learn. But we shouldalso tell the child that making images is haraam and that this is only done by way ofnecessity, so that the child will grow up knowing the shar’i ruling.”- Shaykh Sulaymaan ibn Naasir al-‘Alwaan.(Question no. 13716, www.islamqa.com)

The lessons in this book are designed to stimulate the children’s ability to reason and ponder over the real life we live in, and to live a life with a strong conviction of the existence of our Creator Allah. Small stories and narrations from the teachings of the last Prophet, Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam) are presented in an illustrative manner to appeal to the children’s psychology. Every lesson that is taught is a worthwhile content that would build strong foundations to their future educational development. The teachers and parents who teach the children these lessons, must teach them in a cheerful manner, while making the Islamic Studies classes more lively and vibrant. Children may be asked to engage in Story Telling Sessions, and Question and Answer Sessions, to let them participate in a manner that would make them involve in the lessons. Care must be taken to complete each lesson in a thorough manner. Children must understand the lessons, write them, read them, narrate the stories and the subject matter. They must hear, speak, read, write and understand each and every lesson, to master the subject in hand. We thank Allah, for having made the task easy to get this book published; and we also thank all the members who helped in publishing this book.May Allah accept it.Umar Shariff (Muhammad Akbar Shariff) President, DIET

Note:

Whenever the reader comes across the name of Prophet Muhammad while reading, it is part of the Islamic etiquette to follow his name by sending salutations to him by saying ‘sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam’, which means “may salutations and peace be upon him”.

Whenever one comes across the names of other Prophets, it is part of the Islamic etiquette to follow their names by saying ‘alaihissalaam’, which means “may peace be upon him”.

And whenever one comes across the names of the companions of Prophet Muhammad, the reader must say Radhiyallaahu ‘anhu (may Allah be pleased with him) for a male companion, Radhiyallaahu ‘anhaa (may Allah be pleased with her) for a female companion, radhiyallaahu ‘anhumaa (may Allah be pleased with both of them) for two companions, and radhiyallaahu ‘anhum (may Allah be pleased with them) for more than 2 companions.

The answers to the exercises must not be more than one or two lines.

The glossary in the text book is only meant for understanding words; they are not included in the exercises. Words of complex nature are included to increase the vocabulary of the children.

The exercises are simpler than the content of the lessons, so that the children may find it easy to score marks, and also to understand the greater concepts during the lessons being conducted by the teachers.

The teachers must encourage every child to read the entire lessons, to get familiar with the words. Give them enough practice to read, write, answer & listen to the lessons.

The Falling Leaf On a sunny morning, Mustafa and Ahmed, the two friends went out to the gardens to take a stroll. While they were walking in the garden, they had a wonderful conversation.

Mustafa: What are you seeing Ahmed?Ahmed: I’m observing the leaves falling from the trees.Mustafa: What’s so great about it?Ahmed: All praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has decreed the leaves to fall from its trees.

Allah says in the Qur’an, in Chapter 6, Verse 59“And with Him are the keys of the Ghaib (all that is hidden),

none knows them but He. And He knows whatever there is in (or on) the earth and in the sea; not a leaf falls, but He knows it.

There is not a grain in the darkness of the earth nor anything fresh or dry, but is written in a Clear Record.”

Mustafa: What is the clear record?Ahmed: It is Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz, the Preserved Tablet which is in the seventh heaven.Mustafa: What is written in Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz?Ahmed: All things that happened and all things to happen; the past, present and the future, everything is written in the book. Truly, Allah is the All Knowing. He knows all things.Mustafa: Allahu Akbar! Allah is the Greatest. He knows even the falling of the leaves!Ahmed: Yes indeed. Shall we go for an ice cream Mustafa?Mustafa: Yes, why not! We shall get to eat that which is already written in Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz.Ahmed: Hahaa, well said Mustafa. We cannot eat anything, except what is already decreed by Allah.

Even The Ants Can SpeakIhsaan and Amir are neighbours living in the village of Udangudi. One day, while they were playing in Ihsaan’s house’s courtyard, they found an army of ants.Ihsaan : Check this out pal, I see a swarm of ants!Amir : Aren’t they wonderful creations of Allah?Ihsaan : Yes, they are, but it’s time to get rid of them now. How about killing

them by setting fire to them? Amir : No, don’t do that. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) forbade

his companions from killing the ants by burning them. We may kill them with pesticides if they cause harm to us.

Ihsaan : Alright, let’s not burn them then.Amir : Ihsaan, do you know that the ants can speak?Ihsaan : No, I don’t know about it.Amir : In the past, during the lifetime of Prophet Sulaimaan (Solomon)

(alaihissalaam), he heard an ant speak. Allah had given Prophet Sulaimaan (alaihissalaam) the ability to hear and understand the speeches of animals.

Worship AllahWe must worship the One Who created the universe. Allah is the Lord of the uni-verse.

Allah says in the Qur’an, in Chapter 1, Verse 2,

All praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the ‘Aalameen (mankind, jinns and all that exists).

Allah created all things in the universe. He created the millions of fishes in the oceans, the millions of creatures in the world, and the billions of stars in the galaxies. He sends rain to the inhabitants of the earth. He causes the vegetations to grow. He causes the ships to cruise in the oceans. He is the All Mighty Who deserves our worship. Worship Allah, Who created you.

O mankind! Worship your Lord (Allah), Who created you and those who were before you, so that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious).

Who has made the earth a resting place for you, and the sky as a canopy, and sent down water (rain) from the sky; and brought forth therewith fruits as a

provision for you. Then do not set up rivals unto Allah (in worship) while you know (that He Alone has the right to be worshipped). (Qur’an 2:21-22)

Allah is the One Who created us and those before us. He is the One Who has given us all the sustenance to live on earth. Hence He alone deserves to be worshipped. He doesn’t want us to worship others along with Him; for He has no partners.

The Man Who Killed 100 MenAllah’s Messenger (Prophet Muhammad) said

“There was a person before you who had killed ninety-nine persons, and then made an inquiry about the learned persons of the world (who could

show him the way to salvation). He was directed to a monk. He came to the monk and told him that he had killed ninety-nine persons, and asked him whether there was any scope for his repentance to be accepted (by Allah).

Lesson 4

Page 15: for School Children Little Stars - Discover Islam …discoverislam.co.in/pdf/Little_Stars2_final.pdfMuhammad (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam) are presented in an illustrative manner

9

The Monk said, “No”. The man killed him also, and thus completed one hundred. He then asked about the learned persons of the earth, and he was directed to a scholar; and he told him that he had killed one hundred persons, and asked him whether there was any scope for his repentance to be accepted (by Allah).

The Scholar said, “Yes, what stands between you and the repentance? You better go to such and such land; there are people devoted to prayer and worship; and you also worship along with them, and do not come to the land of yours, since it was an evil land (for you)”. So the man went away, and he had hardly covered half the distance, when death came to him. (The man died on his way, and the angels of mercy and the angels of punishment descend to the place of death.)

Furthermore, there was a dispute between the angels of mercy and the angels of punishment. The angels of mercy said: This man has come as a repentant and remorseful to Allah; and the angels of punishment said: He has done no good at all. (The angels of mercy wanted to take the man’s soul and show mercy to it; while the angels of punishment wanted to take the man’s soul and punish it.)

Then there came another angel in the form of a human being, in order to decide between them. He said: You measure the land to which he has drawn near. (If the land, the man started from is nearer to the place where he died, then the angels of punishment were to take possession of his soul. If the land where the man was to reach is nearer to the place where he died, then the angels of mercy were to take possession of his soul.)

They measured it and found him nearer to the land where he intended to go (the land of piety), and so the angels of mercy took possession of it. (Another information to this incident is that) When death approached the man, he crawled upon his chest (and managed) to slip in the land of mercy.

Saheeh Muslim, English Reference: Book 37, Hadith 6662, Arabic reference: Book 51, Hadith 7184)

Allah Punishes The Disobedient People

Allah is swift in taking retribution, and He is also the Most Merciful. Many disobedient people in the past were destroyed by Allah. Allah hates those who spread mischief and

corruption on earth. He does not like those who transgress the limits.

In the past, Allah destroyed the disobedient people by sending earthquakes, floods, tornadoes and many other calamities.

The First MasjidLesson 6

The Ka’bah was built by Prophet Ibraaheem (Abraham) alaihissalaam and his son Ismaa’eel (Ishmael) alaihissalaam. While building the masjid, they both made a supplication. The supplication was: “Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us. Verily! You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.”

Qur’an 2:127

Al-Masjid al-Haraam in the city of Makkah, is the first masjid (mosque) built for the people to worship Allah. It is also called by the name Ka’bah.

Abu Dharr (radhiyallaahu ‘anhu) said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ‘alaihiwasallam)aboutthefirstmosquetobebuilt forthepeopleonearth.Hesaid, ‘Al-Masjid al-Haraam.’ I asked, ‘Then which?’ He said, ‘Al-Masjid al-Aqsaa [The Furthest Mosque, in Jerusalem].’ I asked, ‘How long between them?’ He said, ‘Forty years.’” (Saheeh Muslim)

Regular prayers are prayed in the Ka’bah. The rewards of praying in the Ka’bah is immense. Every salaah prayed in Ka’bah is equal to 1,00,000 (One lakh) times prayed elsewhere. People visit the Ka’bah and circumambulate it. Seven circuits of the Ka’bah, along with two rak’ahs (units) salaah is called as Tawaaf. The circuits are done in anti-clockwise direction. The two rak’ahs salaah should be offered behind the Maqaam Ibraaheem, or in any part of the mosque.

Maqaam Ibraaheem (the Station of Ibraaheem) is the stone on which Ibraaheem alaihissalaam stood when the building became higher than he could reach. His son Ismaa’eel (alaihissalaam) put this famous stone there for him, so that he could stand on it when the building grew tall. The footprints of Ibraaheem (alaihissalaam) remained on the rock until the beginning of Islam. There are many historical places in the Ka’bah. There is the Well of Zamzam, the two hills Al-Safaa and Al-Marwa, the two precious stones of paradise, namely al-Hajar al-Aswad (the Black Stone) and al-Rukn al-Yamaani.

Every year, Muslims from across the world go to Ka’bah to perform Hajj pilgrimage, and experience the safety and security filled in Ka’bah.

Ka’bah is also the Qiblah (direction) for the prayers. Muslims pray the daily prayers while facing towards the Ka’bah.

ShIrK the Greatest SinThe greatest sin in the sight of Allah is ‘Shirk’. The Arabic word Shirk means ‘to associate partners with Allah’. To worship anyone besides Allah is called as Shirk.

Seeking other’s help in matters where only Allah has to be sought for help is Shirk. Making dua’ to anyone besides Allah is Shirk. Wearing amulets (ta’weez) to ward of evil is Shirk.

Making sacrifices in the name of anyone besides Allah is Shirk. Swearing by other than Allah’s name is Shirk. Prostrating to men, dead-men (graves), animals and idols is Shirk. There are many other kinds of Shirk that we need to stay away from.

Shirk can be done by worshiping:

Allah will not forgive the one who commits shirk, unless he makes a sincere repentance to Allah.

Verily! Allah forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners in worship with Him, but He forgives whom he pleases sins other than that, and whoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, has indeed strayed far away. (Qur’an 4:116)

Allah will not let a person to enter paradise, if he commits shirk.

Surely, they have disbelieved who say: “Allah is the Messiah [‘Iesa (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary).” But the Messiah [‘Iesa (Jesus)] said: “O Children of Israel! Wor-

ship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.” Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, then Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his

abode. And for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers) there are no helpers. (Qur’an 5:72)

All our acts of worship must be directed to Allah alone.

Say (O Muhammad) : “Verily,mySalaat(prayer),mysacrifice, myliving, and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of the ‘Aalameen (mankind, jinns and

all that exists). (Qur’an 6:162)

Adam, The First ManWhen Allah wanted to create man, He said to the angels that He would place mankind generations after generations on earth. The angels had witnessed the Jinns making mischief on earth. Hence they thought that even man would make mischief on earth.

They (the angels) said, “Will You place therein those who will make mischief therein and shed blood, while we glorify You with praises and thanks, and sanctify You.”

Allah said, “I know that which you do not know.”

Allah ordered the angels to collect the soil from the earth, to create Adam out of it. The angels collected the soil that were red, white, brown and black. It was also soft and hard, collected from mountains, valleys, deserts, fertile plains and other places too. Allah created Adam out of the soil which had various qualities. Hence the children of Adam are also of various colours, appearances and attributes.

Allah created Adam out of sounding clay. He fashioned him with both His hands, and breathed into him the soul that was created by Him.

Allah ordered the angels and the jinn Iblis to prostrate to Adam. All of them prostrated to him, except Iblis. Iblis disobeyed the order of Allah. Hence he became a disbeliever. Allah sent Iblis out of the heavens. Iblis was expelled and disgraced.

Adam was instructed to approach a group of Angels, and greet them with the words “Assalaamu’alaikum” (May Allah’s peace be upon you). The angels answered him by saying, “Wa’alaikumsalaam Warahmatullaahi Wabarakaatuhu” (and may Allah’s peace, mercy and blessings be on you). Since that day the greetings of the believers is to spread peace amongst each other.

Allah created Adam and his children to worship Him. He also created all things in this world for mankind to benefit from them and thank Allah. Since Adam had to establish Allah’s law on land, Allah taught Adam the names of all things.

“He taught Adam the names of everything.” (Qur’an 2:31)

Adam alaihissalaam was given the knowledge to identify and know the names of everything. He was able to identify the things like stars, trees, pots etc. Allah taught Adam to speak and communicate. He inspired Adam with the desire towards seeking knowledge.

When Adam learnt the names of all things, Allah asked the angels to tell the names of all things.

The angels answered by saying, “Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what You have taught us.

Verily it is You the All Knower, the All Wise.” (Qur’an 2:31-32)

Allah then turned to Adam and said: “‘O Adam! Inform them of their names,’ and when he had informed them of their names, He (Allah) said: Did I not tell you that I know the unseen in the heavens

and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you have been hiding?” (Qur’an 2:33)

Adam and hawwaWhen Adam was sleeping, Allah created Hawwa (Eve) from Adam’s shortest left rib. She was created to ease his loneliness and bring tranquillity to him. Adam opened his eyes and looked into the beautiful face of a woman gazing at him.

Adam and Eve dwelt happily in Paradise.

23

Allah said to Adam, “eat both of you freely with pleasure and delight of things therein as wherever you will...” (Qur’an 2:35)

Allah warned Adam and Hawwa by saying, “...come not near this tree or you both will be of the wrongdoers.” (Qur’an 2:35)

Both Adam and Eve were forbidden to eat from a tree in paradise.

Iblis, the jinn created out of fire, wanted to cause destruction to both of them. Iblis was arrogant and disobeyed Allah’s command when he was commanded to prostrate to Adam; and said, “I am not the one to prostrate myself to a human being, whom You created from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud.” He didn’t prostrate to Adam; hence Allah cursed him, but granted him respite until the day of judgement.

Iblis, the satan said to Adam and Eve, “...Your Lord did not forbid you this tree save that you should become Angels or become of the immortals.”

(Qur’an 7:20)

The couple were affected by satan’s whisperings, and their minds became filled with thoughts of the tree, and they decided to eat from the tree.

Allah says in the Qur’an, “Then they both ate of that tree, and so their private parts appeared to them, and they began to stick on themselves the leaves

from Paradise for their covering. Thus did Adam disobey his Lord, so he went astray. Then his Lord chose him, and turned to him with forgiveness and

gave him guidance.” (Qur’an 20:121-122)

Allah forgave Adam and Hawwa, when they supplicated by saying,

“Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If you forgive us not and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers.”

(Qur’an 7:23)

Allah loves those who repent to Him. Iblis earned the curse of Allah by not repenting, while Adam and Hawwa earned the pleasure of Allah by repenting.

you guidance from Me, whoever follows My Guidance shall neither go astray, nor fall into distress and misery.” (Qur’an 20:123)

Allah said to Adam, “‘On earth will be a dwelling place for you and an enjoyment, for a time.’ He said: ‘Therein you shall live and therein you shall

die, and from it you shall be brought out (resurrected).’” (Qur’an 7:24–25)

Adam and Eve left Paradise and began their life on earth. Allah had prepared them in many ways. He gave them the experience to struggle against the whisperings of Satan. He taught Adam the names of everything and instructed him of its purposes. Adam took up his position as a caretaker of the earth, and taught his family the way to worship Allah.

One day, Adam’s children were all brought forth miraculously at once by Allah, in the place called ‘Arafaah, and were asked to testify to the truth that Allah is the Lord.

Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam said that Allah sent 1,24,000 prophets to the world. They were all sent to guide their people. All the prophets were sent to a group of people, except the last Prophet, Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam, who was sent as a Prophet to the whole of the world.

All the Prophets of Allah were sent to their people with one common message. They all called their people to the worship of Allah, and forbade the worship of false deities.

Allah says in the Qur’an,

And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger(proclaiming): “Worship Allah (Alone), and (avoid) keep away from Taghut

The Early Life Of Prophet

MUhAMMAD(Peace Be Upon Him)

Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam was born to the couple Abdullah and Aamina. Even before he was delivered by his mother, his father died; thus making him an orphan child. He was taken care by several foster mothers. Halima was one of them.

When Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam was 6 years old, his mother Aamina too died. He was later nurtured under the care of his grand father Abdul Muttalib. Abdul Muttalib too died when Muhammad was 8 years old. He was later taken care by his uncle Abu Taalib.During his teens, Muhammad worked as a shepherd. Shepherding was an occupation that was common to all the prophets. He also travelled with Abu Taalib, while accompanying the caravans to the trade centres. The people who witnessed his truthfulness and integrity, called him by the name ‘Al Amin’, the Trust Worthy and ‘As Saadiq’, the Truthful One.

Umm Ma’bad And her Goat

During the Hijrah, Prophet Muhammad’s migration to the city of Madina, he was

accompanied with Abu Bakr, ‘Amir bin Fuhairah and ‘Abdullah bin Uraiquit.

On their journey they found solitary tents belonging to a woman

called Umm Ma’bad Al-Khuza’iyah.

She was sitting in front of her tent, Prophet Muhammad and his party

approached the tent. All of them were tired and thirsty, and they wanted to

refresh themselves with some food and drink.

Even though Umm Ma’bad didn’t know about their identities, she was very

interested to help them. However, all of her flock were out in the

pasture, except one goat which was standing nearby. She said that the

goat is dry without milk, since it was a rainless year.

The Prophet asked her permission to touch the goat. Umm Ma’bad gave

permission to the Prophet to go near the goat. As the Prophet went close

to the goat, he touched it’s udder, reciting the name of Allah,

all of them were overjoyed to see plenty of milk flowing out of them.

Umm Ma’bad was amazed to see this miracle.

She wondered at the goat that was dry, giving milk instantly.

Prophet gave her the milk to drink first, and then shared it with his party.

Later the Prophet milked some more milk out of the goat, and filled a

container with it and gave it to Umm Ma’bad, and left the tent along

with his members in journey.

Umm Ma’bad’s husband Abu Ma’bad returned home with his slender goats hardly having any milk in the udders. He was surprised to see the

container full of milk. His wife told him about the blessed man whopassed by, and his appearance. Abu Ma’bad understood that the

one who came to his home was the Prophet whom the Quraishis were searching.

Abu Ma’bad expressed his joy by reading poetry in which he thankedAllah for sending the Prophet to his home, and described the

miracle given to the Prophet.

The Moon Split

The polytheists of Makkah demanded Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam) to show them a miracle. Allah made the moon split into two halves and

rejoined them.

Allah says in the Qur’an,

“The Last Hour draws near, and the moon is split asunder!” (Qur’an 54:1)

This incident happened in Makkah. However it’s impact was seen in India too. When the moon split into two halves, the then king of Malabar, Cheraman Perumal

of Chera dynasty of Kodungallure witnessed it from India. A group of Muslim merchants met the king while they were passing by Malabar on their way to China. They spoke to the king about Prophet in Arabia, and the miracle of the moon split into two halves. The shocked king said that he had himself witnessed with his own eyes. He at once deputed his son, and left for Arabia to meet the Prophet of Allah.

Lesson 17

Page 50: for School Children Little Stars - Discover Islam …discoverislam.co.in/pdf/Little_Stars2_final.pdfMuhammad (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam) are presented in an illustrative manner

44

The incident is documented in a manuscript kept at the India Office Library, London, refer-ence number: Arabic, 2807, 152-173.

The Malabari king met the Prophet, bore the two testimonies of faith, learned the basics of faith, but passed away on his way back and was buried in the port city of

Zafar, Yemen.

The news of his accepting Islam reached Kerala, and the people accepted Islam. The people of Lakshadweep and the Moplas (Mapillais) from the Calicut province of

Kerala are converts from those days.

It is said that the contingent was led by a Muslim, Malik bin Dinar, and continued to Kodungallure, the Chera capital, and built the first and India’s oldest mosque in

the area in 629 CE which exists today. The Indian sighting and the meeting of the Indian king with Prophet Muhammad

is also reported by Muslim sources. The famous Muslim historian, Ibn Kathir, mentions that the splitting of the moon was reported in parts of India.

45

Also, the books of hadith have documented the arrival of the Indian king and his meeting with the Prophet. Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, a companion of Prophet Muhammad, states: “The Indian king gifted the Prophet with a jar of ginger.

The companions ate it piece by piece. I took a bite as well.”Reported by Hakim in ‘Mustadrik’ vol 4, p. 150. Hakim comments, ‘I have not memorized any other report

stating the Prophet ate ginger.’

The king was thus considered a ‘companion’ – a term used for a person who met the Prophet and died as a Muslim – his name registered in the mega-compendiums

chronicling the Prophet’s companions.‘Al-Isaba’ by Ibn Hajr, vol 3. p. 279 and ‘Lisan ul-Mizan’ by Imam al-Dhahabi, vol. 3

p. 10 under the name ‘Sarbanak,’ the name with which the Arabs knew him.

Lesson 18

The Night JourneyOn one night in Makkah, the roof of Prophet Muhammad’s house split open,

and Jibreel (Gabriel) descended into the Prophet’s room. He went over the Prophet, opened his shirt and cut open his chest. He then removed his heart and washed

its inside with Zam Zam water. After he had completed washing it, he then brought a gold dish filled with Eemaan (faith) and Hikmah (wisdom),

emptied it into the Prophet’s chest and closed it all up.

Later, when the Prophet woke up, Jibreel took him outside his house, and helped him mount the animal called Buraaq. Buraaq was an animal which was

smaller than a mule, and larger than a donkey, white in colour, having a wing on each of it’s hind legs. It took the Prophet at a very fast pace, until the

Prophet reached Jerusalem.

Page 54: for School Children Little Stars - Discover Islam …discoverislam.co.in/pdf/Little_Stars2_final.pdfMuhammad (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam) are presented in an illustrative manner

48

The Prophet dismounted the animal and tied it to the ring on the door of Al Masjid Al Aqsaa. Prophet entered the masjid and prayed 2 rak’ahs there.

When he finished the prayers, he noticed a group of other Prophets praying there. Among them were Moosa,‘Eesaa and Ibraaheem (may peace be upon them).

Prophet Muhammad was told to lead them all in the Salaah.

The Prophet then left the masjid, and the Mi’raaj was brought for him. Jibreel helped him get into it, and it shot up into the heavens and went out of the solar system. It travelled very fast, and the Prophet and Jibreel left

the galaxies; and reached the lower heaven. Then they travelled to the next heavens, one after another, until they reached the seventh heaven.

He met many prophets in the heavens.

Jibreel led the Prophet until the Lote-tree. Jibreel could not go beyond the Lote-tree; so he stopped there. Prophet Muhammad was permitted by Allah to go beyond the Lote-tree; so he went further and met Allah,

the Lord of the Universe. The Prophet talked to Allah, received commands from Him, and returned to the world on the same night. He reached

Makkah on the same night. This is a great miracle of Allah.

Allah talks about this incident in the Qur’an:“Exalted is He who took His Servant [Prophet Muhammad] by night from

al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.”

(Qur’an 17:1)

“So will you dispute with him over what he saw? And he certainly saw him in another descent at the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary – near it is

the Garden of Refuge (Paradise) – when there covered the Lote Tree that which covered (it). The sight (of the Prophet) did not swerve, nor did it transgress

(its limit). He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.” (Qur’an 53:12-18)

The sound was like that of a baby crying. The Prophet approached the trunk and put his hand on it; and the trunk became silent.

Even the trunk of a palm tree loved the Prophet of Allah.

The Blessed FoodOne day, Anas (radhiyallaahu ‘anhu) visited the Messenger of Allah, and found him sitting in the company of his companions, with a belt tied over his waist. He asked, “Why has the Messenger of Allah tied the belt on his waist?” He was told, “due to hunger”.

Anas went to Abu Talhah (radhiyallaahu ‘anhu), the husband of Umm Sulaim (radhiyallaahu ‘anhaa) and said, “O father, I have seen the Messenger of Allah with a belt tied over his waist. I asked one of his companions about the reason of it, and he said that it was on account of severe hunger.” Abu Talhah went to Umm Sulaim and asked, “Have you got anything?” She said, “Yes. I have a piece of bread and some dry dates.

If the Messenger of Allah came alone, we shall feed him his fill; but if he comes along with others, there would not be enough food.” She brought out barley loaves, took off her head covering, and in a part of it she wrapped the loaves and then put them beneath Anas’ mantle and sent him to the Messenger of Allah. Anas went out and found the Messenger of Allah sitting in the mosque, in the company of some people. He went towards them and stood near them.

The Messenger of Allah asked Anas, “Has Abu Talhah sent you?” He said, “Yes.” Thereupon the Messenger of Allah said to those who were with him to get up (and follow him). He went forth and so did Anas, ahead of them until he came to Abu Talhah and informed him.

Then the Messenger of Allah said, “O Umm Sulaim, bring forth what you have with you.” So she brought the bread. The Messenger of Allah commanded that the bread be broken into small pieces; and Umm Sulaim squeezed clarified butter out of a butter container and made it just like soup.

The Messenger of Allah recited over it what Allah wished him to recite. He then said, “Allow ten guests to come in.” They ate until they had their fill. They then went out. The Messenger of Allah again said, “Allow ten (more to come in)”, and he (the host) ushered them in. They ate to their fill. Then they went out. The Messenger of Allah again said, “Allow ten (more),” until all the people ate to their fill. The groups of ten people ate by turn.

After eighty persons had eaten, the Messenger of Allah and the family of that house ate, and there was still a quantity left over. When all had eaten, the remaining food was collected. It was as much as there was in the beginning.

Manners of Sleeping and Waking up

Early to bed. Early to rise. One must go to bed, soon after finishing the Ishaa prayers (the prayers at the night). We must not be awake at night, unless we are praying or talking about Allah and the matters of religion.

The main purpose of going early to bed is to get up for the Fajr prayers (the prayers in the dawn).

It is recommended to make wudhu and brush the teeth before going to bed. One must read the last three Surahs of the Qur’an, each thrice before going to sleep. One may read Aayatul Kursi and the last two aayaath from Suratul Baqarah before going to sleep.

When one sleeps, it is recommended to sleep to his right side. Furthermore, one must not lie down on his stomach. The Prophet said that the people in hell would lie on their stomachs. Hence we must not imitate them

One must read the duaa’ before sleep.

‘In Your name O Allah, I live and die.’

When one wakes up from his sleep, he must read the duaa’.

All praise is for Allah who gave us life after having taken it from us and unto Him is the resurrection.

We must thank Allah for giving us life to witness the day.Soon after waking up, we must fold our blankets, and keep the pillow and bed in order. It is good manners to keep our room neat and tidy. It is also good manners to do our work without expecting others to do our work.

Keep Your Mouth CleanThe Prophet said, “Cleanliness is half the faith”. It was said to Anas,”What did

you hear the Prophet saying about garlic?” Anas replied, “Whoever has eaten (garlic) should not approach our mosque.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Page 70: for School Children Little Stars - Discover Islam …discoverislam.co.in/pdf/Little_Stars2_final.pdfMuhammad (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam) are presented in an illustrative manner

64

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah: The Prophet said, “Whoever has eaten garlic or onion should keep away from us (or should keep away from our mosque).’ (Sahih al-Bukhari)

When one eats onions and garlic, his mouth will smell bad due to what he has eaten. Hence he must not enter the masjid until he brushes his teeth.

It is highly recommended to brush the teeth often.

Siwaak is a method of cleaning the mouth with a twig or tooth brush. It earns the pleasure of Allaah. Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘Siwaak cleanses the mouth and pleases the Lord.’” (al-Bukhaari, Ahmad and al-Nisaa’i)

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Were it not for the fact that I did not want to make things too hard for my ummah (people), I would have commanded them to use the siwaak at every time of prayer.” (al-Bukhaari and Muslim)

‘Aaishah was asked what the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did when he first came home. She said, “When he entered his house, the first thing he would do was to use the siwaak.” (Muslim)

Siwaak is recommended at all times of night and day. It is recommended when making wudoo’, at times before prayers, when getting up from sleep, when the smell of one’s mouth changes due to eating food with strong odour or because of not eating or drinking for a long time, when going to the mosque, when reading Qur’aan and joining gatherings in which Allaah is remembered (dhikr), when one enters his/her home and when one is fasting.

65

Obey your ParentsWe must obey our parents. When they ask for any help, we must do it. We must be

very kind to them all the time. Allah says, “And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and kind to his parents. His mother

bears him with hardship. And she brings him forth with hardship…” (Qur’an 46:15)

We must not use any word of disrespect on our parents. Allah says, “say not to them a word of disrespect” (Qur’an 17:23)

However, we must not obey our parents, if they ask us to commit shirk. Allah says, “But if they (both) strive with you to make you join in worship with Me others

that of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not; but behave with them in the world kindly” (Qur’an 31:15)

66

Be Good To Your NeighboursWe must be good to our neighbours. Whether they are Muslims or non-Muslims, it is our responsibility to have a peaceful relationship with our neighbours. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘Jibreel kept on enjoining the good treatment of neighbours, to the extent that I thought that he would include neighbours as heirs.” (Muslim)

Among the rights of one’s neighbour over another as encouraged by Islam are the initiation of greetings, visiting him if he is sick, offering condolences if calamity befalls him, congratulating him at times of joy, overlooking his mistakes, concealing his faults, bearing his annoyance with patience, giving him gifts, lending him money if he needs it, lowering one’s gaze from looking at his womenfolk, and guiding him to that which will benefit him in his religious and worldly affairs.

It is a sin to hurt the feelings of the neighbours. One must not harm his neighbours by his words and actions. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “He will not enter Paradise from whose harm his neighbour is not safe.” (Muslim)

Choose Your FriendsThe Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “A man will follow

the way of his close friend, so let each of you look to who his close friends are.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2387; Abu Dawood, 4833.

As Muslims, we are supposed to be kind to all. We are encouraged to help people. However, one must be very careful in choosing his friends. We must look in for good

habits and character in people, and then take them as friends.

A friend is he who can teach us good manners; and a friend is he who learns good manners from us.

Be Generous to your GuestsProphet Muhammad encouraged us to treat our guests generously. He instructed us to treat them with the best food for one day and night. Furthermore, he asked us to show hospitality for three days. He also said that if anyone shows hospitality to the guests

after three days, then it is charity bestowed upon him.
