For the harvester every grain is important, and the author of Wisdom says that God looks upon the whole world with the same attention and care. The second analo- gy portrays the same attentiveness. God sees the world as though it were a single drop of dew. This is a God of immeasurable care and compassion. In Luke’s story of Zacchaeus, Jesus fulfills that very role, he “has come to seek and to save what was lost.” There is something amusing and even ridicu- lous about the plight of Zacchaeus. He is no ordi- nary tax collector ( a group despised by the citizens), he is the chief tax collector. When we gather for liturgy we believe that we en- counter the Lord in the Word, in the elements of the sacrament, in the priest, and in each other. At the Eucharistic liturgy the Lord is both guest and host. He becomes the meal and the host at our Eucharistic table, and in that event of communion we are trans- formed. Mass Intentions for the Week

October 29th & 30th, 2016

For several weeks the Sunday Gospels have remind-ed us of what it mean to be disciples. The passages from Luke recounted the teachings, parables, and examples of Jesus’ ministry that shape and direct our efforts at being faithful disciples. As we near the end of Ordinary Time the readings shall shift the focus from our behavior to the action of God in the world and in our lives. The author of Wisdom speaks of God as the Lord of the cosmos. God looks upon the world as the har-vester regards the single grain that falls from the balance, the scale that measures the harvest. For the harvester every grain is important, and the author of Wisdom says that God looks upon the whole world with the same attention and care. The second analo-gy portrays the same attentiveness. God sees the world as though it were a single drop of dew. This is a God of immeasurable care and compassion. In Luke’s story of Zacchaeus, Jesus fulfills that very role, he “has come to seek and to save what was lost.” There is something amusing and even ridicu-lous about the plight of Zacchaeus. He is no ordi-nary tax collector ( a group despised by the citizens), he is the chief tax collector. He must have been slightly embarrassed– a person of his position having to climb a tree to see Jesus. But he sets aside any personal inhibitions and climbs up. Then an amazing thing happens. Jesus announces that he I coming to stay at this house. Jesus becomes both guest and host at the table of the sinner. When we gather for liturgy we believe that we en-counter the Lord in the Word, in the elements of the sacrament, in the priest, and in each other. At the Eucharistic liturgy the Lord is both guest and host. He becomes the meal and the host at our Eucharistic table, and in that event of communion we are trans-formed. What are the two promises exchanged in the Gospel account? What phrase from the First Reading is spiritual wis-dom for you? What does the conversation between Jesu and Zac-chaeus mean for discipleship?

Practice of Hope The Church celebrates the Solemnity of All Saints on November 1st, lifting up all the holy men and women who have gone before us into glory. It is a Holy Day of obli-gation. On November 2nd, the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed ( all Souls’ Day), the Church lifts up in prayer all our beloved dead. Through all of No-vember, the month of our faithful departed, the Church on earth unties in prayer with Church in heaven. St. Vincent’s will have the Book of Names of the Dead (Remembrance book), displayed at the front of the church. Make a point to write the names of your beloved dead in the book. Place candles, mementos, and pictures of you beloved departed in a special place in your home for the month of November. Plan a special trip to the cemetery to visit the resting place of deceased relative or friends. Bring supplies to tend the gravesites and prepare a special blessing prayer.

Remembrance Book In many Christian traditions November is a month of remembrance, initiated by two spe-cial autumn feasts. All Saints on November 1st and Feast of the Holy Dead on November 2nd. These feast help us remember those we have loved who have journeyed through death. Though they have died, they can be very real and close to us because “ One lives forever in the hearts of those who remember the holy dead of our families and our friends—those who have recently died and also those who have died years ago and continue to live in our “memory harts” by placing their names in the book of Remem-brance at the front of the church.
