Remember the Reasonfor
this Season
Dear Parishioners
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Canyou believe it, we begin
another new year—2017. Itseems like yesterday that we werebeginning the twenty-firstcentury. We have alreadyconcluded sixteen years of thetwenty-first century.
On this first day of the new year and the Octave Day ofChristmas, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. Today, the Church honors theBlessed Virgin Mary, who was chosen by God the Fatherto be the mother of His Son. As Jesus was both fullyhuman and divine, the Church confesses that Mary is truly“Mother of God” (CCC 495). So may we join together thisday in adoring Mary, who is the Mother of God and ourspiritual mother.
As we are visiting with family and friends, watching footballgames, etc., let us also take some time today to do whatMary did as we hear in today’s Gospel, “The shepherdswent in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told themabout this child. All who heard it were amazed by whathad been told them by the shepherds. And Mary kept allthese things, reflecting on them in her heart” (Luke 2: 16-19)
May we continue to grow in God’s grace as we begin 2017.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!--Fr. John
