President Tanya’s Message:

As we move out of 2012 and in to 2013 we pause for a moment to reflect on that which has passed, and prepare for what lies ahead.

In our world of dragon boating this is an interesting time. We are mid season – not the beginning and not the end so what does that mean to me and maybe to you…

Well, on the 1st Jan I did make a commitment to:

• attend as many training sessions as possible

• loose 10 kilos

• to laugh more

• to drink less alcohol

Mid January, and to date - I have laughed more! The

rest may come!

We do have an exciting part of the year ahead.

• Finishing our regatta season with team

personal best results. Do you know what my

favourite part of a race is – the opportunity to

be IN the boat! From that point anything is

possible.

• Travel plans to Malaysia in October.

• Continue with our commitment to engage in

the positive messages around living life to the

fullest despite the blows just living sometimes

deliver to us.

A creative way to think

about our year ahead:

Happiness depends upon your

outlook on life.

Attitude is just as important as

ability.

Passion: find yours this year!

Positive thoughts make everything

easier.

You are unique, with special gifts,

use them.

New beginnings start with a new year.

Enthusiasm is the true secret of success.

Wishes: may they turn into goals.

Years go by too quickly, enjoy them.

Energy, may you have lots of it.

Appreciation of life, don’t take it for granted.

Relax: take the time to relax in this coming year.

Paddles up

Tanya

Mini Field of Women

October is breast cancer

awareness month and as part

of our commitment towards

this we hosted a Mini Field of

Women at Maylands Sport &

Recreation Club (MSRC) on

Sat 20th October. Amazons

and guests enjoyed a (late)

breakfast after training in the

‘pinked up’ bar and patio area

of the club. Vice President

Angela spoke about the benefits and reasons why

dragon boat paddling is so great for those who have

experienced a breast cancer diagnosis and why we all

need to be involved in efforts to keep breast cancer

issues on the public agenda. Everyone was invited to

participate by attaching a Tribute Tag with their

thoughts, wishes or memories to a pink lady silhouette.

Funds raised were forwarded to breast cancer

organisations as

we work towards

the goal of no

breast cancer

deaths by 2030.

Pink Lady

merchandise was

on sale. Pink lady and Amazons lapel pins are still

available should you wish to add one to your pin

collection.

Is it time to update your

paddling wardrobe?

Then you need to see Andrea… she manages ‘most things’ to do with our paddling gear.

Fairbridge Sleepover

In November Amazons began the season with our annual team sleep over at Fairbridge Farm. This time we stayed in Fairbridge House and enjoyed good food, good company and great singing!

Regular Exercise Assists

Breast Cancer Recovery Delegates at the recent BCNA (Breast Cancer

Network Australia) Forum heard about the

benefits of participating in regular, intense

exercise programs especially when you’ve in

the recovery stage. It boosts the immune

system and helps overcome lethargy. “The effort is

worth it! The more you move the better you feel”

Amazons were on hand to

talk about the benefits of

paddling with several

prospective Paddlers

following up on the details.

Please talk to a Board

Member if you know of

upcoming events where

we can promote the

benefits of paddling with

Amazons Perth.

Our team has breast cancer survivors and supporters:

all have been touched by breast cancer in some way.

We’re a sporting team that works hard to ensure that

everyone in the boat is able to paddle to individual

ability while building fitness and strength as part of a

committed team.

We proudly wear the pink ladies’ hot pink to raise

awareness of breast cancer , but it was all about

Festive Red and Green with lots of tinsel for the pre

Christmas training session. We certainly attracted a lot

of on-shore and Boatie attention with a great deal of

“ho ho ho-ing”, laughter and carol singing during the

cool down paddle. Festive morning tea goodies

completed the session.

Now Dasher, Now Dancer, Now Prancer and …NO… Not Flasher!

From the Coaches: Its mid season and already we have achieved many things, membership has increased, overall strength and endurance has improved (have you noticed that we are paddling longer and harder with the Drag Queens?) We are keen to build on the success of the November and December regattas to claim new PBs (Personal Best times) in the January and February regattas.

We’ve been working on core body strength so we can use those strong muscles for greater movement and power in our stroke. Keep up the efforts here as the results show when we’re on the water. There is a 10min a day fitness program available, you’ll find it in the orange file next to the Attendance Book. Every bit of fitness work we do, especially if it’s a regular program will help our individual effort, which in turn improves the team effort. It’s best if each of us can do something for our fitness several times a week. Well done to all our new Amazon Warriors who have joined us during the racing part of the season. We have upped the level of training this year and you have managed to stay on board with us, trying everything we have lined up and taking care of yourselves when your body says enough. This is a real testament to you and our fabulous team sport that allows us to have all levels of experience in the boat. If you have any queries about the paddling program please feel free to speak to Deb, Marg or Jennie.

Fundraising with Mel: It was an amazing start to the regatta season, with our BBQ and raffle. Once again the Amazons showed their generosity and support in giving fantastic prizes for the raffles and catering items. Thank you to the great team of volunteers including husband, Vince, (he didn’t really need to have his arm twisted), son Christian ( who will do anything for the Amazons, not one bit upset that he couldn't sleep in on his Sunday morning) and Aldo for fantastic skills on the BBQ. Raffle ticket sellers Nicholas and Marcella made a huge impact on their walkabout and Rosalie’s family once again came to help out. Our newest members volunteered their time to support the team for their first regatta. We loved having you there to share the experience and excitement. It was a top day both on and off the water with over $930.00 being raised for the Amazons. There are more ideas ahead as we move into 2013 so watch this space.

Register4 reminder: Here’s something that we can all do to help achieve the goal of no breast cancer deaths by 2030. If you haven’t done so please go online and sign up for REGISTER4.

Since its inception in October 2010, Register4 has

made a significant impact on the medical research

landscape in Australia, drawing upon over 30 000

members to successfully recruit for research projects

within days or weeks instead of years.

There are still projects looking for participants and

more to come in 2013. Anyone 18 years and over, with

or without breast cancer can join at

www.register4.org.au and help fast track breast cancer

research.
