In July, 1961, The English Academy of Southern Africa held its inaugural meeting in the University of the Witwatersrand. Dr. Gwen Knowles- W'illiams was elected as the first President, and a preliminary constitution was adopted that enabled this new association of leading members of the English Community to initiate further plans for the maintenance of standards of English usage.

The Council of the Academy has allowed “ Symposium” to print the addresses made on this occasion, all of which were of permanent interest and value, as the reader will readily appreciate.

As the only educational Journal in Southern Africa in a position to give hospitality to utterance of national significance and to conferences of major educational importance, “ Symposium” is very happy in this way to expand its usefulness, and it appreciates the honour that the Academy has paid it. We hope that this wilt be the first of many acts of co-operation not only with this distinguished body, but with other societies and associations as well.

Readers who would like to know more of the work and the intentions of the .Academy may do so through the secretary, V. H. Osborn, Esq., 65 Doreen Street, Colbyn, Pretoria.

Nelson books for Religious InstructionRSV

The Revised Standard Version of the Holy Bible

SCHOOL EDITION I6s 3d R1-63

This is the most suitable version of the Scriptures for Religious Instruction — lucid, accurate and yet dignified

The reason for the accuracy of the RSV is two-fold. First, by using newly discovered manuscripts—some of them more than one thousand years older than those consulted by the translators of the Authorised and Revised Versions— the compilers of the RSV have corrected many mis-translations, clarified doubtful passages, made meaningful what was obscure and inaccurate. Secondly, the English language has changed greatly since 1611, when the Authorised Version was made. The RSV substitutes the living language of today, without losing the grandeur of the old text.

selections from the RSV for younger readers

The Bible StoryThis handsomely produced new book is designed to introduce children to Bible reading.

The language in all the selections is that of the Revised Standard Version itself. This is not a book of Bible stories retold.

Children of nine and above will be able to read and understand the selections for themselves without guidance. Yet this book is true to the meaning of the Old and New Testaments.

The Bible Story is very fully illustrated both with full-page plates and with drawings in the text. 10s RI-00

A LIVELY ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSE for secondary schools presenting a balanced four-year programme of work to examination standard. The author has ensured liveliness in the choice of comprehension passages, and, in the first two books, by puzzles and word games in vocabulary sections. The passages are piquant and varied, and come from a wide range of authors from Dickens to Thurber.

A Grammar School English CourseB. J. PENDLEBURY, M.A.

Comprehension. Each book contains 12 prose and 6 verse passages, chosen for their suitability and intrinsic interest. In Book 4 passages and questions approximate to those found in examination papers. Grammar. The emphasis is mainly on a logical and orderly approach to analysis and those aspects that concern ability to construct clear sentences.

Vocabulary. Book 1 begins with dictionary work. Book 2 introduces affixes, derivatives, world-building, figures of speech, etc. Books 3 and 4 amplify this book and Book 4 adds notes on the elementary processes of logic.

Punctuation. The emphasis is on clarity and orderliness, and the principles of punctuating simple, double, and complex sentences are clearly set forth.

NELSON’S SHORTER ATLAS OF THE BIBLEL. _H. Grollenberg. This book is intended for use in class. It tells in graphic form what we know o f the origins and history o f the Bible. Over 200 photographs show the lands o f the Bible and the results o f archaeological re> search. Ten pages o f full* colour maps.

It contains complete works of established merit and popularity which have enjoyed an earned success. Eleven titles are available including REBECCA; THE SNOW GOOSE and THE SMALL MIRACLE; DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE and VILLAGE OF STARS. The prices range from 65c to 75c. for hard-bound copies.

USEFUL BOOKS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STUDYMY HOME SERIES

This series is prepared for children of between 7 and 10 years of age. In each book a child describes his home, his family circle and the way of life in the country in which he lives. Throughout each of the 24 books there are innumerable full-colour illustrations which capture vividly the country and its people. Price 17c each.

UNDERSTANDING THROUGH INTERESTAn educational course designed to increase understanding and expression through informative reading—graded in four books at 50c each.

PLAYSMAY WE RECOMMEND

In this series extracts from well-known books for children have been dramatized in the form of short radio plays. Each play is published as a broadcast script and as the number of characters is comparatively small, much scope is left for group work. The introductory book, containing 12 plays, is followed by six graded books which each have six plays. The first four books of this series will be found suitable for primary schools. Introductory book 70c. Books 1-6 47c.

LET’S ACTThe four books in this series contain ideas and suggestions for drama work in the primary school. It is not a four-year course. The prices range from 50c to 67c. Teacher’s book 67c.

LONGMANS ABRIDGED BOOKSSince it is abridged and not simplified this series will be found valuable for use between the Bridge Series and the Heritage of Literature Series. In the Abridged Books the best of English fiction is presented in a form which can be read with greater facility than the original by those not yet able to tackle the work in its original form. Each title has been abridged by an expert and the language and style have been maintained. Texts are cut without impairing the unity of the main plot or the flow of the narrative. A special feature is a full note on the author, a short summary of the plot and brief notes on the main characters, which is included as an introduction to each title. Language exercise material and a glossary are contained at the end of each book in the limp edition at 57c. The cased edition without exercises or glossary is 73c.

NEW SWAN SHAKESPEAREThis is the first edition of Shakespeare designed especially for overseas students. The full text of each play is prepared in the light of the most recent scholarship and accompanied by notes that have been written with the requirements of overseas schools examinations in mind. The plays include notes on the characters and a note on the language of the plot covering metaphor, simile and imagery, and a note on the dramatic construction of the play. Notes appear opposite the text and explain all the more difficult words in the plays. The books are bound in two styles, a stiff paper binding and a hard-case binding. In the cased edition photographs of recent stage productions are included. The titles available include MACBETH, JULIUS CAESAR and TWELFTH NIGHT at 70c and 93c; A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM at 65c and 93c and RICHARD II at 67c and 97c.
