Mack Sennett director of Mack Sennett Comedies and partnered with Thomas Ince builds a proper film studio for star, Mabel Normand at 4319 Effie St in East Hollywood. Construction on the studio was completed.

While women gained the right to vote in 1919, Normand was running the studio and working as one of Hollywood’s first female directors. She directed unknown British vaudeville comic Charlie Chaplin in his first short films and shares credit for inventing the pie in the face gag that would become a Sennett comedy staple.

The Studio was purchased by Homer Curran of Curran Productions and Bates Lighting Company, a division of Curran Productions. The Los Angeles Civic Light Opera Association (LACLO) used the studio for the fabrication of painted scenic backdrops and stage scenery.

Grammy nominated, platinum selling music producer Jesse Rogg took over the ownership of the former Triangle Stage and shortly thereafter began to restore and remodel the building for LA’s creative renaissance. The building was named “Mack Sennett Studios” and has featured thousands of film, television, video and event production projects since.

The address was changed at this time from 4319 Effie St to 1215 Bates Ave. “16 additional acres were leased only five blocks from the

studio on Fountain ave. Sennett released the Mabel Normand film, “Mickey” on February 25, 1918.

The Los Angeles Civic Light Opera Association vacated the studio property and leased the facilities to Steven Collins for twenty years. He re-named the historic structure The Mack Sennett Studio from sugges-

tions of film historians Marc Wanamaker and Eugene Hilchey.

The studio property is purchased by Edwin H. Flagg of Flagg Scenic Company through the real estate broker, R.A. Rowan and Company, Los Angeles. The old shacks at the apex of the lot (the point of the triangle)

were torn down and the building was extended to that apex. The facili-ties featured a stage, studio and café.
