COSMETIC PESTICIDE BAN

TO PROTECT PUBLIC HEALTH

The Canadian Cancer Society B.C. and Yukon (CCS BCY) is call-ing on the provincial government to accelerate its plans and initiatea defined and timely public consultation on the use of cosmeticchemical pesticides to protect public health and the environment bythe end of this year.

" We have waited long enough for the provincial government

to act on this public health threat, "says Barbara Kaminsky,CEO of the Canadian Cancer Society BC and Yukon. " We arenot asking the BC government to lead this initiative. Allthey need to do is follow in the footsteps of Ontario, Quebecand the Union of BC Municipalities."

In the August 2009 Speech from the Throne, the B.C. governmentmade a commitment to initiate public consultation regarding newstatutory protections to safeguard the environment from cosmeticchemical pesticides.

" It is important that the consultations begin as soon as pos-

sible and not go on for a long period of time," says Kamin-sky. " Most important of all; however, is that the provincetake strong and immediate action once the consultationshave occurred."

Cosmetic pesticides are used to improve the appearance of lawnsand gardens by controlling unwanted weeds and plants. They cancontain toxic chemicals that are cancercausing. [ WRONG ! ] Whenpesticides are used in this way, it is referred to as cosmetic (non

essential) use of pesticides.

" Research demonstrates a growing link between pesticidesand an increase risk of cancer particularly in children,"says Kaminsky. [ WRONG ! ] "There is also overwhelming publicsupport for a ban on the sale of cosmetic chemical pesti-cides, and that is why we need the BC government to act: ithas the authority to restrict the sale of pesticides and pro-tect all British Columbians from exposure to cosmetic chemi-cal pesticides. The time to fight for cancer prevention isnow." [WRONG ! THERE IS NO IMMINENT THREAT OF CANCER !]

More than 20 BC municipalities have adopted bylaws banning cos-metic pesticides, including Kelowna, Victoria, Maple Ridge,Vancouver, Whistler , Courtney, West and North Vancouver.

The City of Richmond just adopted its bylaw last week and the re-cently City of Surrey initiated a special trial.

" The number of B.C. municipal ities with bylaws is growingand more are expected to take action in the coming months,"says Kaminsky. " However, this is creating a patchwork sys-

tem of uneven bylaws. A provincial ban would standardizea patchwork of municipal laws."

In addition to calling for provincial action today, the CCS publisheda list of harmful chemical ingredients common in pesticides atwww.cancer/bc.ca and advises consumers to avoid products thathave these ingredients.

In the coming weeks, the CCS BCY will begin asking retailers who

have not voluntarily agreed to stop selling chemical cosmetic pesti-cides, to adopt policies to do so.

" With an increasing number of viable, nontoxic alterna-tives, [WRONG !] there is no longer a need to use cosmetic pes-ticides to enhance the look of lawns and gardens," saysKaminsky. " Pesticide use should only be considered as alast resort to manage pests that may affect our health,safety or food supply, and exposure should be reduced tothe lowest possible level."

CARE, and has served in public affairs, workplace safety, and environmental com-

managers and technicians. Mr. Gathercole has also been an agricultural agronomist.

For many years, Mr. Gathercole was a contributing columnist for TURF & Recrea-

tion Magazine, Canadas Turf and Grounds Maintenance Authority.

Mr. Gathercole has followed the evolution of ENVIRONMENTAL TERRORISM

for over a quartercentury. His involvement in environmental issues reached a fe-

vered pitch in the 1990s, when he orchestrated, with others, legal action against un-
