The Story”… Told like Never Before!

“The Story – The Musical” – From the first time I saw it, I was captivated in my spirit and by every emotion as I experienced “The Story” message portrayed with such spectacular cinematography and stirring orchestration and vocal music.

Vision Team Minutes from March 9, 2015

Deacons: Need 2 more deacon interns to distribute the work load; the deacons and ushers will continue to walk

the halls during the church service

Discipleship: “Follow” series: Recruiting facilitators now. Currently have: Wed – Lynwood (in lieu of prayer meetings), Sunday am (Joe Wircenske’s class); and a young adult which will be co-facilitated by Matt and Jessica. Hope to have 2 or 3 more. We will begin advertising for the series this week (website) and bulletin/announcements. Nursery for “the Story.” Have many slots still to fill. Staffing from 6:30-9pm. Each evening we will hold a short youth protection reminder before we start. Adjusting staffing (recruiting) for Children’s church and Sunday School since the youth will soon transition to youth activities on Sundays. Have contacted Tee (new youth leader) …after he is onboard we will go over Discipleship team activities (how to get curriculum, etc) and will hold a Youth Protection Training for him.

Facilities: Materials for sign out front have been purchased.

Finance: $5,500 was used from money market, however, we have had 2 great offering Sundays.

Mission Action: - WMU has an emphasis on Eastover and special items requested are in the bulletin; PORT is

requesting some items as well; Singing Saints sang at Mennowood today and will be at St Frances next week.

Outreach: We had originally planned on no longer doing a Block Party… it may be a mistake to cancel, we need to advertise better and maybe change some ideas… inflatables w/ cookout and music??? We need to plan soon if we change our mind. We will discuss this at a later date.

People Support: Memorandum of agreement is being created to hire Tee; more info will come introducing Tee

Worship: concentrating on ‘The Story’…All choral music has been introduced; solos are being coordinated;

next rehearsal is Saturday, March 14; sound techs and stage positioning is still a work in progress; Stephens

Memorial is assisting w/ Reader’s Theatre and solos; Parkview has been coming to Saturday rehearsals.

Chapter 1 & 2: What do you think the doctor’s diagnosis would be if our church was given a “physical exam”? sick/slightly sick/very sick; we have had discussions on where our church is and that we need

to change; however, once we get to that point we have been pushed back; we need follow through; the

family model is different today; priorities are different; some are not able to attend Sunday; we have

tried for years to reach parents without success; we need to reach the children who will reach and bring

the parents.

Harvest What You Plant

Pretend you've come to visit me. I'm working in my greenhouse. (Neither my house nor my thumb is green, but let's pretend.) It's the perfect spot for flowers and fruit. You've always thought I was a bit crazy, but what I do next removes all doubt. I strip seeds off weeds – crab grass, grass burrs. You can't believe what you've just seen.

"I thought you wanted a greenhouse full of flowers and fruit!" you say.

"I do," I answer.

You ask, "Then don't you think you ought to plant flower seeds and fruit seeds?"

My foolish response, "Do you have any idea how much those seeds cost? No thanks, I'm taking the cheap and easy route."

Think for a moment of your heart as a greenhouse. Consider your thoughts as seed. Some become flowers. Others weeds. Sow seeds of hope and enjoy optimism. Sow seeds of doubt and expect insecurity. Galatians 6:7 says, "People harvest only what they plant."

What We Think

There is much we cannot control that takes place around us. We surely cannot control the weather, and we cannot control the things others may do or say. But, we do have the power to control ourselves! Every moment of every day, each of us makes decisions – choices – about how we will proceed in life.

Much of our life's direction is determined by the sum total of these daily deci-sions!

In all of our choices, the area that is perhaps most difficult to control, but at the same time is the most important, is the choice of what we think! There is a saying that goes like this –

Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become your character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.

What we think, we become. Through the years, this phase has been attributed to many individuals. Regardless of who originally penned these words, they are so true. In fact, they are biblical! Proverbs 4:23 tells us to "be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts."

The Power of God

The story is told of a hospital’s Intensive Care ward where patients always died in the same bed, on Sunday morning, at about 11 a.m., regardless of their medical condition. This puzzled the doctors and some even thought that it had something to do with the supernatural. No one could solve the mystery... as to why the deaths occurred around 11 a.m. on Sundays.

So a world-wide team of experts was assembled to investigate the cause of the incidents. The next Sunday morning, a few minutes before 11 a.m., all doctors and nurses nervously wait outside the ward to see for them-

selves, what the terrible phenomenon was all about. Some were holding wooden crosses, prayer books and other holy objects to ward off the evil spirits.

Just when the clock struck 11... Pookie Johnson, the part-time Sunday sweeper, entered the ward and unplugged the life support system so that he could use the vacuum cleaner.

The story isn’t true (despite what you may have heard to the contrary). But the principle is an important one — where there is no power, the results can be deadly.

I am reminded of what Jesus said to the Sadducees when they came to him asking a question about the resurrection. They asked the question — involving a convoluted situation with a man who married seven women who all died — because they hoped to demonstrate to Jesus that there could not possibly be a resurrection from the dead.

Jesus response was this: "You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.” (Matthew 22:29). Any time we deny (or limit) the power of God — denying what He can do if He wants to — we find ourselves on dangerous ground. The New Testament is filled with passages which emphasize God’s power. There is power in the gospel (Rom. 1:16), power in the message of the cross (I Cor. 1:18), and power in the resurrection of Christ (I Cor. 6:14).

If you’re noticing that others are spiritually dying around you (or maybe even that you yourself are dying), maybe it’s time to check the “power source.” Are you connected to the One through whom our power comes?

May you be filled with a knowledge of “the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,” Eph. 1:19-20.

Don’t underestimate (or unplug yourself from) the great power of our God!

No Place For “Me-ism”

In The Church

The man walked into church with his family and after being greeted by a friendly usher, he bluntly asked, "Tell me, why should I come to this church? What do you have to offer me?"

The "me" of this man's question was emphatic. Sadly, he is not alone in his misguided view of the church's purpose. Today, perhaps more than ever before, it appears that many in the church have fallen into the "meism" culture of the world around us. When it comes to spiritual priorities, their attitudes are not "Theo-centric" (God-centered), but "ego-centric" (me-centered), as is much of what they attempt to pass off as their commitment.

As personal as our faith is, it was never meant to be private. True Christianity cannot be lived out by picking and choosing according to our peculiar likes and dislikes. There is no place for the “buffet mentality” of those in church who promote personal priorities and agendas over Christ’s call for sacrifice and submission to the community-at-large.

The doctrinal admonitions of the Apostle Paul, and the words of Jesus Himself, mandate nothing less than a non-elective commitment to the shared passions of one’s greater faith community. How deceived and in peril are those who errantly believe they can go their own way without endangering their eternal destinies and perhaps revealing that they never truly knew Christ, or His call to submit and follow in the first place.

We in the church today must break free from the self-centeredness of the world and culture around us, and understand the true nature of faith in Christ always connects us with something far greater than "me." None are called to individualistic isolationism. Rather, we are passionately invited to a greater sacrificial and communal expression, connecting us with the saints of the past and embracing those yet to be.

The "ancients were commended for their faith…" because they fixed themselves upon God's promises and priorities, and not upon their personal preferences. They were sure of what they hoped for and certain of what they did not see, knowing God's purposes expanded far beyond themselves and present situations. We enjoy "something better" in the New Covenant because their faith was God-centered and communal.

There is no disputing a mystery here… No debating of facts. Following Christ call us to cross bearing and dying to selfish attitudes and designs. Faith in Jesus Christ – “the same yesterday, today and forever” is, in its very essence, multicultural, multigenerational, universal and eternal.

A reminder from Rick Warren … “Worship – It’s not about your “likes”, it’s about what God likes… and the two are often quite different!

Allow The Holy Spirit To Live In & Through You You can work, work, work at being more Christ-like every day. But you will fail. You cannot do it. God did not design you in that way, and nor can you develop that capacity. It is the Holy Spirit's job to produce Christ-like character in you. In a mystical mirror image, He is the invisible and powerful transforming image of everything Christ is.

No one knows Jesus better than the Father and the Holy Spirit. The Father reserved His place to rule and reign the universe from Heaven. When Jesus completed His earthly ministry, He ascended back to the Father to sit in the throne room and to make intercession on our behalf for every prayer and supplication we make to God. But as the Father was delighted to send the Holy Spirit to anoint Jesus for His earthly ministry, He now delights in sending Him upon us. He directs us according to Father’s perfect plan and purposes. He empowers us to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. He delights when we allow His divinity to flow through and outshine our carnal fleshly natural man. You and I cannot reproduce the character of Jesus on our own strength. Resolutions, willpower, and best intentions are not enough. Only the Holy Spirit has the power to make the changes God wants to make in our lives. The Bible says, "God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him" (Philippians 2:13 NLT). Mention "the power of the Holy Spirit," and many people think of miraculous demonstrations and intense emotions. But, most of the time, the Holy Spirit's power is released in your life in quiet, unassuming ways that you aren't even aware of or feel. Remember the Holy Spirit is a divine person of the trinity. He more than merely an invisible power. In other words, Christ-likeness is not produced by imitation but by inhabitation. We allow the Holy Spirit to live and produce the life of Christ through us. How does this happen? Through the choices we make. We surrender access to our lives and wills by choosing to follow Jesus in all situations and then trust God's Spirit to give us his power, love, faith, and wisdom to do it. Since God's Spirit lives inside of us, these things are always available for the asking. Why not allow Him to live both in and through your life more completely today?

Allow Me To Give You A Gift Golfer Arnold Palmer once played a series of exhibition matches in Saudi Arabia. The king was so impressed that he proposed to give Palmer a gift. Palmer demurred; "It really isn't necessary, Your Highness. I'm honored to have been invited." "I would be deeply upset," replied the king, "if you would not allow me to give you a gift." Palmer thought for a moment and said, "All right. How about a golf club? That would be a beautiful memento

of my visit to your country." The next day, delivered to Palmer's hotel, was the title to a golf club. Thousands of acres, trees, lakes, clubhouse, and so forth. The moral of this story is this – in the presence of a King, don't ask for small gifts! We serve the God of the universe, and yet we worry about the little bit of dirt under our feet! Jesus Christ bore prophetic and painfully real stripes on His back, yet we are timid to ask for our healing! He owns the cattle on a thousand hills, but we feel embarrassed to believe for our needs to be met. The Bible says that God shall supply all our needs according to His riches in Glory! Come boldly before His throne! He desires to bless His children! Dream big dreams, and do great things for the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! Everybody's Doing It Chuck Swindoll tells the story of the spider who built a beautiful web in an old house. He kept it clean and shiny, so flies would patronize it. The minute he got a "customer" he would clean up after him so the other flies would not get suspicious. Then one day a fairly intelligent fly came buzzing by the clean spi-derweb. Old man spider called out, "Come in and sit." But the fairly intelligent fly said, "No sir, I don't see other flies in your house, and I am not going in alone!" Presently the fly saw on the floor below him a large crowd of flies dancing around on a piece of brown paper. He was delighted! He was not afraid if lots of flies were doing it. So he came in for a landing. Just before he landed, a bee zoomed by, saying, "Don't land there, stupid. That's fly-paper!" But the fairly intelligent fly shouted back, "Don't be silly. Those flies are dancing. There's a big crowd there. Everybody's doing it. That many flies can't be wrong!" Well, you know what happened. He landed on the paper and died. Some of us want to be in the crowd so badly we end up in a mess because we didn't listen or search out a situation. What does it profit a fly (or a person) if he escapes the web only to end up in the glue?

Shout! Are you fighting a battle you're afraid you won't win? Who are you depending on – God or yourself? When faced with the combined armies of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, God told His people Israel, "...The battle is not yours, but God's..." (2 Chronicles 20:15) And God's never lost a battle yet! He told Joshua, "...I have delivered Jericho into your hands..." (Joshua 6:2) Notice, He didn't say, "I will deliver" or "I might deliver." No, He said, "...I have delivered Jericho into your hands!..." Israel already had the victory, now they were being called to act on it. But the question remained – how? God's answer was "...Shout..." Joshua told the Israelites, "...When you hear...the trumpets...give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and [you] will go...straight in." (Joshua 6:5) Now no rational person would expect a shout, no matter how loud, to bring down the walls of a big city. But this was no ordinary shout; it was a shout of faith based on a promise God had made. Even though victory looked impossible, when Israel shouted God responded by bringing down the walls and opening the doors to the Promised Land. When you're looking for an open door and all you can see is a brick wall, the last thing you feel like doing is shouting "victory," right? But you need to do it regardless, because: • the shout of praise leads to victory • it puts your faith "on the record" • it confounds the enemy and robs him of two of his greatest weapons: doubt and discouragement • obedience, even when you don't understand, always brings results. So shout, for the victory is yours!
