TRANSCRIPT

ForewordJazz musicians have always gathered. That’s how the DNA of the music is passed on fromgeneration to generation. For all the wonders of 21st century technology, and all thetrappings of formal education, as jazz musicians we are, first and foremost, part of an oralhistory, an unbroken chain of wisdom (and wit) that stretches back into the mists of musichistory - to the streets of New Orleans and the dance clubs of Chicago, to the late night jamsessions of Harlem and the quayside bars of Havana and Rio, to the lofts of downtownManhattan and underground outposts in Berlin, Paris and Dublin.

The chinese whispers of jazz go all the way back to the founders of the music, so when wemeet and play with other musicians, when we learn an old tune with new friends, whensome elder statesman shows us a new trick, we are connecting with that continuum in a waythat, for the most part, classical musicians and rock musicians cannot. Styles may come andgo, sounds may change, and we may have moved far away from anything that might berecognisable to Lester Young or Charlie Parker as jazz, but we are, nonetheless, inheritors ofthe same living tradition. When we sit in a class with a great teacher, when we get up andjam with musicians we have never met before, even when we are just giving our energy toperformers as members of an audience, we are connecting with a way of making music thatis alive and growing – to quote Gustav Mahler, tradition is not the worship of ashes, it’s thepreservation of a flame. Eddie Lee and his fantastic team breathe on that flame every year, and it’s a real privilege for us all - musicians and listeners, students and teachers, old handsand beginners - to bask in its light.

Sligo Jazz Project (SJP) summer school has firmly established itself as Europe’s biggest andbest jazz education event. This year we have a huge faculty of twenty-three internationalmusicians giving workshops each day in IT Sligo and performing in concert and jamsessions. You’d never know who might turn up at sessions at Hargadons, Tricky’s, variousSligo cafés or our festival hub, the Riverside Hotel, during the week.

This year’s theme is Fusion, highlighting the plethora of musical styles that make up the jazzplanet. Our Artist-in-Residence, UK saxophonist/rapper Soweto Kinch’s swaggeringBebop/Freestyle Rap/Hip-Hop mix and LA-based Aussie drummer Virgil Donati’s jazz-metalfusion add a lot of spice to the more conventional jazz flavours you’ll sample this week.

Fabulous female jazz performers abound, with vocal jazz from Liane Carroll, Sara Colmanand Emilia Martensson, who are joined for the first time in Sligo by trombonist ShannonBarnett and saxophonist Meilana Gillard. As always with SJP, there are many firsts! So, forthe first time, we team up with the Yeats Summer School and the Hawk’s Well Theatre in co-presenting a night of Yeats-inspired jazz, featuring vocalist Christine Tobin’s Sailing toByzantium. We’ll have the SJP All Stars on Friday this year and two action-packed shows ofKieran Quinn’s Themed Night Shows (Theme number 18). What’s not to like?
