MISSION

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt educational organization founded to preserve and restore eighteenth-century Williamsburg . Responsibility for the Foundation rests with a Board of Trustees . The mission of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is to help the future learn from the past by preserving and restoring eighteenth-century Williamsburg and engaging, informing, and inspiring people as they learn about this historic colonial capital, the events that occurred here, and the diverse peoples who helped shape our new nation . During 2003, over seven hundred and sixty-eight thousand ticketed guests were able to take part in its educational programs .

OVERVIEW

The Foundation provides educational and cultural programs . Best known for its restored and reconstructed eighteenth-century buildings, the Foundation also operates the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, and Bassett Hall (the Rockefellers' Williamsburg home) .

Colonial Williamsburg is large and diversified, employing almost 1,900 men and women. The staff's duties include the research, preservation, and maintenance of the buildings and grounds ; interpretation of the exhibition buildings and trades ; publication of manuscripts and other scholarly works; production of educational films ; and curation and conservation of the collections of antiques and objects of art .

To serve guests and the community better, the Foundation opened the Bruton Heights School Education Center in April 1997 . The Bruton Heights School Education Center is located on a 30-acre campus within walking distance of the Historic Area . Bruton Heights, built, equipped, and partially endowed by gift funds, has unified the resources available for scholars, researchers, and the general public by combining library and collections and conservation facilities with space for research, audiovisual and educational outreach productions, and interpreter training . The Breton Heights School Education Center encompasses three buildings : the John D. Rockefeller, Jr . Library, the DeWitt Wallace Collections and Conservation Building, and the Breton Heights School .

In addition to unrestricted cash gifts, income from admissions, sale of crafts, reproductions, publications, and films, from the tavern and colonial houses operations, from the rental of retail space m the Merchants Square properties, and from the hotels and restaurants operated by the Colonial Williamsburg Company help pay for operations . A portion of the investment income, determined annually in accordance with polices established by the Board of Trustees, is available for operations . In 2003, over 102,000 donors made gifts and grants .

Scope of the Historic Area

Three hundred one acres comprise the Historic Area . In or next to the Historic Area stand eighty-eight original public buildings, shops, houses, taverns, and outbuildings . They include the President's House, the Brafferton, the Wren Building at the College of William and Mary, the Courthouse on Market Square, Breton Parish Church, the Magazine, and Wetherburn's Tavern . The George Wythe House, the Peyton Randolph House, the Thomas Everard House, the James Geddy House, and the St . George Tucker House are other surviving eighteenth-century structures .

Williamsburg continued to be a county seat and home to two important institutions : the College of William and Mary and the Public Hospital for the insane . Although fires occasionally raged in parts of the old city, Williamsburg was spared mayor destruction . Eighteenth-century homes were repaired, renovated, and continued m use until the twentieth century .

sites . The Governor's Palace, the Capitol, and the Public Hospital are examples . The reconstructed Raleigh Tavern, which opened in September 1932, was the first fruit of the archaeological, architectural, and historical research that informed their duplication .

Ninety acres of gardens and greens fashioned to eighteenth-century forms showcase the buildings . In addition, the Historic Area is surrounded by 3,000 acres of greenbelt owned or used by the Foundation .

Seeing the Historic Area

Over forty exhibitions and activities are open daily to Colonial Williamsburg guests . Two hundred twenty-five rooms are furnished with thousands of appropriate American and British antiques from Colonial Williamsburg's collection of furniture, paintings, ceramics, glass, silver, pewter, textiles, tools, and carpets .

Historical interpreters, attired as colonial workers, lawyers, tradespeople, actors, slaves, shopkeepers, gaolers, servants, and soldiers, relate the stories of eighteenth-century Virginia society and culture .

In over twenty Historic Area trade sites, artisans practice trades with the tools and methods of the time . All are highly skilled, several in nearly extinct trades . They include makers of shoes, baskets, furniture, wigs, cloth, harnesses, musical instruments and smiths of silver and iron . There are bakers, printers, bookbinders, tailors, housewrights, jewelers, engravers, carpenters, brickmakers, millers, milliners, spinners, weavers, and wheelwnghts .

Other Points of Interest

The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, named for the founder of the Reader's Digest, houses one of America's outstanding collections of British and American antiques . Its thirteen galleries include 8,000 objects from the late, seventeenth, eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries .

Twenty-six hundred examples of American folk painting, pastels, pen drawings, wood and metal sculptures, and work in other media are displayed at the Abby Aldnch Rockefeller Folk Art Museum . The museum will be closed to guests in 2005 as it prepares for a move to larger quarters .

Bassett Hall, an eighteenth-century residence near the Capitol, is furnished exactly as it was when John D. Rockefeller, Jr ., and his wife, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, used the estate as their Williamsburg home in the 1930s and ̀ 40s . Set amid recently restored Colonial Revival gardens, it contains their important collection of American folk art and associated antiques .

History of Williamsburg

In 1699, Virginia's colonial capital moved from Jamestown to Williamsburg . In 1780, for reasons relating to military defense, a healthier climate, and a more central location, the capital of revolutionary Virginia moved to Richmond, where it remains today .

Colonial Williamsburg's collections, acquired over the past 75 years, provide the objects and artifacts necessary to accurately re-create the environment of 18th-century Williamsburg, the colonial capital of Virginia . The archaeological collection includes 500,000 whole archaeological artifacts from excavations in and around Williamsburg as well as 50,000,000 bits and pieces ; probably the largest single archaeological holding relating to 18th-century America . The British and American antiques collection includes 60,000 objects : arms and equipment, ceramics, costumes and costume accessories, household items, furniture, musical instruments, games and toys, glassware, kitchen equipment, paintings, silver and other metals, textiles, and tools and equipment. Other specialized groups include artisan's tools and scientific instruments, 7,500 rare books, 15,000 historical manuscripts, and 2,000 original maps . Miscellaneous items include game counters, leather jugs, wigs, and horn cups.

Colonial Williamsburg Foundat~

Restoration began m 1926 when John D. Rockefeller, Jr ., inspired by the imagination of the Reverend W. A . R . Goodwin of Bruton Parish Church, deeded to return Williamsburg to its glory . Original eighteenth-century sites were acquired and their buildings were carefully returned to their colonial appearance . Nineteenth- and twentieth-century houses and buildings were moved, and, in their places, carefully researched reconstructions arose on original eighteenth-century foundations .

John D. Rockefeller, Jr ., contributed the funds necessary to accomplish the restoration and reconstruction and to establish an endowment to provide for Colonial Williamsburg's educational programs . Rockefeller himself contributed $68 million for the preservation of eighty-eight original structures and, to complete the scene, the reconstruction of fifty mayor edifices and many smaller buildings on their original sites . The Foundation also used Rockefeller funds to acquire surrounding properties to protect the Historic Area and provide public accommodations . Rockefeller's uncompromising standard of excellence continues to guide Colonial Williamsburg's modern-day development .

The Rockefeller's generosity set the standard for a development program that began in 1976, reaching out to supporters from all over the world . Leading the way, the Rockefeller family has given $100 million in support of Colonial Williamsburg . Other mayor Colonial Williamsburg donors include Lila and DeWitt Wallace and the DeWitt Wallace Fund for Colonial Williamsburg, the late Ambassador and Mrs . Walter Annenberg, Mr. and Mrs . Joseph H. Hennage, Mr. and Mrs. William R. Kimball, and Mr. and Mrs . Robert S. Wilson . Gifts to Colonial Williamsburg support the research, documentation, and interpretive framing fundamental to the presentation of programs in the buildings, trade saes, and museums ; acquisition and conservation of art ; preservation and maintenance ; production of publications and audiovisual programs-all of the Foundation's educational activities .

GENERAL PROGRAMS

The Historic Area is a 301-acre outdoor history museum with over 600 original and reconstructed houses, outbuildings, shops, taverns, and public buildings . Drawing from a collection of over 60,000 objects, Colonial Williamsburg furnishes, maintains, and interprets over 225 18th-century period rooms and craft shops . Historical interpreters offer tours through the houses, taverns, and public buildings . Craftspeople demonstrate 40 crafts known to have been practiced in 18th-century Williamsburg . Character interpreters portray a variety of historical residents of Colonial Williamsburg, including merchants, housewives, and slaves . Specialized tours are also available that focus on the African-American presence in Williamsburg, the role of women in the 18th-century, and the origins of the U.S . Constitution . Other special educational programs discuss such topics as decorative arts, historical archaeology, colonial architecture and town planning, landscaping, music, and African-American history and culture .

The Foundation does not give preferential treatment to its trustees and principal officers . There are certain transactions between the Foundation and its employees, including some of its principal officers . The following are believed to be the most important examples :

A . The Foundation operates colonial gift shops and a colonial craft store . The employees of the Foundation and its subsidiary, including the officers and trustees, are encouraged to purchase crafts and furniture from the Foundation's own stores for the purpose of utilizing in their own homes colonial type furnishings related to the period on which the Foundation focuses . The Foundation allows a 25 percent discount on purchases to encourage this use . The Foundation owns certain restored houses in the historic area, and some of the officers and employees live in these houses upon the payment of reasonable rent. In addition, the Foundation requires the President to live in a house in the historic area to better facilitate the performance of his duties, and the house is provided free .

B . The Foundation offers financing to officers for the purchase of life insurance . No interest is charged on insurance loans . Life insurance loans are for a one-year term and the annual premium is repaid over bi-weekly pay periods . The Foundation will extend credit to its trustees for the purchase of goods and services it provides . However, the terms of credit so extended are the same as applies to the general public .

C . Upon the liquidation of Williamsburg Restoration, Inc . in 1970, the Foundation acquired a golf course and tennis and swimming facilities connected with the Williamsburg Inn . All employees of the Foundation and its subsidiary, including officers and trustees, may use these facilities at a cost below that paid by the general public .

D. The compensation of officers and trustees has been set forth under Part V, Form 990.

E. No part of the income or assets of the Foundation has been transferred to any officer, trustee or other employee . Trustees do not receive any compensation . Travel to Board meetings is reimbursed upon request.
