THE names of all Fremantle servicemen who died during

World War I will light up the town hall this weekend as the port city prepares for one of the most important Remembrance Days in a generation.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War and Fremantle’s role has already been marked with a train journey last Friday from Blackboy Hill to the port, commemorating the departure of the country’s first troopsalbeit a day earlier than the actual date.

Hundreds of school children lined the platform before troops and dignitaries marched to the maritime museum for a service.

On Saturday the STS Leeuwin sailed into Gage Roads carrying the families of members of the 11th Battalion, who exactly 100 years earlier had sailed for Egypt before heading to Gallipoli.

Bloody actionhe th was the first

battalion recruited in WA and was the first ashore in Turkey, playing a major role in defending the beachhead. Later the battalion saw bloody action in the trenches of the Western Front. During the war, 1115 members of the battalion were killed and another 2249 wounded.

Defence chaplain Marie-Louise Collins held a small service and passed sprigs of rosemary to family members, who cast them into the sea as a gesture of remembrance to those who didn’t return.

The commemorations continue with the lighting

display on the weekend before Tuesday morning’s Remembrance Day service at Monument Hill. The service starts at 10.45am, and a feature will be students laying 849 crosses bearing the names of local soldiers killed in action.

If you’ve got an early Herald, Australia’s submarine service celebrates its 100th anniversary on Friday November 7 at 11.30am in Kings Square by gaining freedom of entry to Fremantle. Mainly a ceremonial honour, it gives the “silent service” as they’re known, the right to parade through the streets.

In East Fremantle, Leeuwin Barracks will hold a

Remembrance Day service at . am at the main flag station. The Applecross RSL sub-

branch holds Remembrance Day service at the Clock Tower Memorial in Melville Civic Square on Almondbury Road. It starts at 10.45am and people are invited to lay a floral tribute.

In Cockburn, a catafalque party from the Royal Australian

avy’s tirling base will kick off the service with a march to stand guard around the memorial at Memorial Hall on Rockingham Road at 10.30am.

Following the service dignitaries and diggers will head back to the nearby RSL hall for a lunch.

“WE may even say that we want that little section

annexed to the RSL.”The Barnett government’s

local government mergers have Cockburn veteran Arthur Stanton and his comrades shellshocked; if the new boundaries are adopted they’ll be behind enemy lines, in Fremantle.

The Cockburn RSL Hall and war memorial both fall within the expanded Fremantle border and Mr Stanton says this has caused the group some consternation as Fremantle already has its own league.

“You’ve got to change the name, so do we revert to the original name after World War I of Spearwood or do we change it to Jervoise Bay,” he asked

the Herald. “There’ll be three sub-branches in Fremantle; the Fremantle branch which is almost dead, Bicton-Palmyra, and the most progressive RSL in Western Australia—Cockburn.

“But there’s a hell of a lot of history tied up in Cockburn— people might not know but the monument that’s at Memorial Hall was originally in Spearwood. You can’t just throw that away.”

Mr Stanton says every year the club presents Anzac memorial awards to 24 local primary schools (including Fremantle) and says even after the mergers it’ll make incursions across the border into the new City of Jervoise Bay to make sure the connection isn’t lost.

Meanwhile the club’s had some good success helping young veterans come to terms

with their experience (“Got your back,” Herald, April 26, 2014).

Mr Stanton says the club attracted eight returned soldiers to march earlier this year and, as word has spread about its ground-breaking approach to post-traumatic stress, more have since joined the club. It’s been targeting personnel who served in Afghanistan, Iraq and East Timor.

It’s now got a big enough contingent that it had been planning to hold the country’s first service dedicated to iddle

ast conflict ne t October, but that was put on hold when prime minister Tony Abbott announced a national day of recognition for March.

Mr Stanton said the club may still hold its own ceremony, but will make sure it’s on the same day as the rest of the country.

It’s all for nothingTHE decision to merge areas of Cockburn with Kwinana, Fremantle and Melville can be blamed on the Cockburn Community Steering Committee (CCSC).

The CCSC was funded and supported by members of Cockburn council and was a group of individuals who submitted its proposal to the WA local government advisory board and had further discussions.

The CCSC didn’t consult the ratepayers of either Cockburn or Kwinana. They took their proposal on themselves to the Walgab.

The Walgab did not consider the submissions from ratepayers, City of Cockburn or Kwinana council.

I am sure Kwinana will welcome ratepayers from Cockburn into our council region.

WA local government minister Tony Simpson is a toothless tiger and a wimp. He is too frightened to stand up to premier Colin Barnett or the Walgab.

Minister Simpson has stated he has no control over the Walgab recommendations and can only approve or reject them.

This council merging project will cost ratepayers a large increase in rates and other council charges—all for nothing.

Steven CrudenEdwards St, Kwinana

Shame, Herald!IT was with anticipation our family opened the Herald this week to see if our friend’s son was recognised in our local paper for his well-deserved award, at his year 12 graduation through the school-based traineeship by South Metropolitan Youth Link.

We were astonished to see that of all those amazing young teenagers photographed with MP Ken Wyatt, none were credited with names. We read and re-read the article and wondered whether this was sloppy journalism or were the photos just fillers for a story to accompany an inflammatory sub headline “30 years of success: ‘It’s good, but it’s not good enough’.”

What a shame this inspiring achievement by our youth was marginalised by a story on the low numbers of year 12 graduating indigenous students. Yes, this is an important issue and deserves an in-depth analysis and reportage but at the expense of those who have done the hard work?

This article frames the discussion on indigenous education as a problem that needs to be fi ed, which not only demeans these students’ achievements but diminishes them.

Shame Herald! On behalf of my family, our friends and our community I wish to congratulate all those young men and women for their incredible achievement. Stand

Keep your muzak malls!MUCH has been written recently about the future of Fremantle, much of it bewailing the loss of large venue shopping opportunities.

But for me, Freo is much more than this. Why do I go into Freo almost every day? Most days, I go in for a good coffee with cheerful service. Other times it is the council library, a haircut, the bank, my eye doctor, an alternative food store, the vegie markets, an interesting film, a meal with friends, the chemist, a good bookshop, the travel agent and so on.

f want a bland, mu ak filled glitzy shopping experience, I would go to Garden City. Lets not get to hung up on parking and department stores and keep Freo as a vibrant, unusual space which has sidestepped the onrush of mindless large-scale commercial growth.

Gordon PayneJenkin St, South Fremantle

A human rightLIKE many others, I am always concerned about the homeless in this state.

I have listened to the premier banging on about the amount of government-owned properties he is going to put up for sale (Woodside and Kaleeya hospitals, etc), to no doubt pay for his grandiose plans for the Perth CBD.

I for one believe in the most basic human right, which is food in your mouth and a roof over your head. Why can’t these hospitals be turned into accommodation for the homeless?

In Liverpool, UK, they have a homelessness strategy that says anyone who is threatened with homelessness is prevented from becoming homeless wherever possible. Second, no individual who is sleeping out on the street for the first time is sleeping out more than one night. Third, anyone who is homeless today is supported into appropriate accommodation tomorrow. This is not Utopia.

Why then, in this rich state of ours, are these people being ignored. Go on Colin, embrace the homeless strategy. Then you will really make a name for yourself.

Norman WarburtonKardinya

proud, your success is recognised and acknowledged by us! Ultimately our children’s success contributes to the social value of our community. Surely that is something to celebrate.

Carol Leen HuishHope St, White Gum ValleyThe Ed says: Sorry about the names.

We’d thought tags would be readable for us to get names for the captions but we learned in the wee small hours of production night, long after we could have called someone, that some were illegible. The sub-headline was drawn directly from Sam Gowegati’s address but we’re sorry you feel it diminishes the students’ achievements.

herald lettersFaith intactA BIG thank you to the person (or people) who returned my wallet, lost during the Fremantle departure service October 31. My wallet was returned with everything intact including a decent amount of cash. Your act of honesty has warmed my heart and is a positive example to us all.

Katharine AllenSwanbourne St, Fremantle

Presence feltI EXTEND my congratulations to all those who participated in and assisted with the organisation of the Fremantle departure service.

They succeeded in very much capturing, as far as it is possible after 100 years, the essence of the original day. It was easy in my mind’s eye to imagine the excited crowd farewelling for the second

Selective bowingYOU report (Herald newsclips, November 1, 2014) that “Fremantle council has bowed to public opposition and will let North Fremantle residents have crack at working on a policy guiding development around the old Matilda Bay brewery”.

It’s not mentioned that most of the land in debate (approximately two-thirds) will be outside City of Fremantle boundaries under the planned councils’ amalgamations.

This new boundary issue was voiced at the council’s most recent meeting by residents from the neighbouring Town of Mosman Park. At the same meeting Fremantle deputy mayor Josh Wilson—who chaired the sitting—was dismissive of and far from “bowing to public opposition” when the council decided to push through a controversial residential development in Malcolm Street despite strong opposition from local residents.

Petr PacakHiltonThe Ed says: Amalgamations are still six

months away at best, more than enough time for the council to adopt a binding plan for the area.

New city a shared task

F councillor liff Collinson (Herald letters, November 1, 2014) and I agree the current local government reform proposal represents a win in comparison to the mega-merger initially put forward involving Fremantle, East Fremantle, and Melville.

That would have been a terrible outcome for all three. But there is no “takeover” involved in the current proposition. hroughout this process I have championed the right of local communities to choose, and in this case either Fremantle or East Fremantle can opt out through a local poll.

As someone who has been a resident in both municipalities I think that would be a mistake.

And in any case, Sean Bruce-Cullen (Thinking Allowed, same edition) is right when he says the proposed greater Fremantle will create a new local government comprised of all the suburbs and people south of McCabe Street, west of Stock Rd and north of Phoenix Rd.

This new entity will continue to have downtown Freo as its heart and strategic centre, and it’s in that sense alone that I have described Fremantle as expanding.

Our shared task, which I termed “Fremantle United”, is to help create a new municipality whose character, facilities, and services match the energy

time in 15 years troops embarking for military service on foreign shores, this time as the 1st AIF of a young nation, whereas in 1899 they were distinctly Western Australians and it was not until the contingents departing after the 26th February 1902 did they become Australian Commonwealth Horse (WA).

The address by Gabrielle Egan served to remind us at a deeply personal level, the price paid by many families around the nation then and for future generations. With our best and brightest lost to the nation, one can only wonder what contribution the may have made to our future and that of humankind had their lives not been cut short by the maelstrom of war.

I sensed the presence of those mounted ghosts of the West Australian Infantry, farewelling their successors on that November day of 1914 with a salute and the ageless exhortation of one generation of soldiers to another, “keep your heads down, your powder dry and never volunteer for anything!”

Lest We ForgetKevin BovillNoble Way, Success

and expectations of what is already a strong community of common interests. Ensuring there is fair representation across the entire community is part of that task, which is why it’s so important we push the minister to support the continuation of a six-ward system.

Cr Josh WilsonDeputy Mayor, Fremantle

The wheels of changeAS someone quite new to urban riding I love the new yellow bicycles painted on the roads in central Fremantle.

hey make me feel really confident riding here, and when I see those yellow bikes I think “this is the City of Fremantle, I’m riding a bike, and I am welcome here!”

Now I love taking my bike rather than my car into town and I’m so happy to live in a community that actually wants and helps me do that. And a huge thank-you to all the awesome patient car drivers who give me a bit of room and a smile as I pass.

WHEN young Chilean miner Manuel Munoz arrived in Perth 30 years ago there were, he now reckons, just 100 people who could get a note out of a pan pipe.

feel, and played a big part in the development of the Meeting Place in South Fremantle, which started life as an ethnic centre.

Chile’s democratic revolution was slow to come, and one well-known Western Australian seemingly missed the group’s warnings about Pinochet; Alan Bond created an international furore in 1988 when he bought half of Chile’s telephone company and was photographed grinning and shaking hands with the general. There were big protests around the country and the positive PR he’d garnered winning the

merica’s up five years before diminished so much his photograph was burned in e gy.

The memory remains sharp enough for a look of sadness to flash across uno ’s face today.

Pinochet—whom Margaret Thatcher regarded a personal friend—fell in 1990 and Munoz says the country is a great place to visit these days.

“It’s very quiet and very nice compared to when I left, and a lot more democratic.”

He’s pleased to see youngsters have much greater access to music tuition and instruments and he recently convinced his son Sebastian to travel there for the first time. uring ebastian’s travels, it was the Bolivian arm of Andes music that attracted him most: “The music is very big there, because that’s really where it came from and that’s the music we play most,” he says.

It’s also a consequence of Pinochet’s hatred of musicians: Bolivia had already undergone a revolution to overthrow its junta and in the aftermath celebrated folkloric traditions. Partially as a result of that, Pinochet regarded all folk musicians as potential revolutionaries and set about destroying them. Many bands went into exile or were imprisoned, and prominent musician Vitor Jara was tortured and killed by the military.

Huaira guitarist Hugo Alvarez says things are very different for the musos in erth these days.

“I was watching a Chilean group at a soccer field and the music was ama ing, but the hilean people did not really listen,” he says. “But when we play for Australians, they really pay attention.”

• Huaira as been piping up for 0 years

T hirty y ears of C hil e c oolThe music of the Andes was almost completely

unknown to West Aussies, although by then the exotic and ethereal sound was taking Europe by storm courtesy of a stream of refugees fleeing Chile’s music-hating dictator Augusto Pinochet.

Munoz says Perth’s small population of exiles, estimated to be about 1000 families, was overwhelmed by their new surroundings and clung to music as a reminder of their mountainous home. They also used it to educate West Aussies about the brutality of Pinochet, who headed a junta responsible for murdering thousands.

“We tried to make a big revolution from over here, but the only thing we could offer was the music,” Munoz remembers.

He formed pipe band Huaira, which first performed at Cafe Folkloric in Northbridge, home to ulcha’s first guise, the orth erth thnic Music Centre: “Not many people knew about this type of music, but the ethnic centre opened the door for us and we participated in many festivals.”

The music proved so popular that 30 years later Hauira’s still pumping out tunes, although Munoz is its only original member. In the intervening years he’s taught thousands of school kids to play pan pipes and last year was awarded life membership of Kulcha. Many in the community moved to Fremantle, attracted by its cosmopolitan

NOW TAKING ENROLMENTS

• from page 1“At one stage we had to say no

to observers because too many were asking,” Ms Mollard says.

The Herald has also learned the unit’s training accreditation is at risk because the controlling body is concerned it may not operate to the same standard.

Both Dr Davies and her sister say poor communication from the South Metropolitan Health Service, which is managing the transition, contributes to the problem. “High level managers are micro-managing, but they don’t know how things work,” Dr Davies told the Herald.

Ms Mollard says questions often go unanswered and she says sometimes she feels the department doesn’t have a clue what it’s doing. She says the unit’s occupational therapist wasn’t told her job was being advertised and then Dr Davies was blocked from being on the selection panel. That order was eventually overturned by someone higher up in the department, but she says it all adds to the confusion.

Tears“We’ve been in tears that many times

it’s not funny,” she says.Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren says

moving the unit from Fremantle is short-sighted and will cause suffering for local patients who’ll have further to travel.

“With the resignation of the three doctors in the existing clinic, we must question how they will be replaced, and at what cost,” she says. “There is collectively decades of experience not moving over the Fiona Stanley, this is a complete waste of valuable skills. Time stretched out whilst waiting for the changeover will mean wait times may jump from three to six months.”

Ms Mollard says before her sister took over the unit in 2007, patients were waiting more than two years to get into the program. Until recently that wait had dropped to about two months.

I t hu rts to m ov e

by STEVE GRANT

LEO BAXENDALE has almost finished one of the unit’s programs and says it’s been “inspiring”.

“It’s helped to manage the pain by understanding what pain is and what it can and can’t do to you, the implications of medicating and the benefits of slowly but surely developing an exercise technique to manage the pain,” he says.

His back has been giving him grief on and off since the s when he had a disc removed. He’s seen his share of physios but says they often trot out the same old exercise routine because it’s all they know.

Another patient says addiction, side-effects such as headaches and reduced effectiveness of medications with prolonged use are all common problems facing people in chronic pain.

“It is not a safe service for patients if doctors are used that do not have a su cient level of e perience and expertise in chronic pain.”

She says when the unit transfers to FSH in February it will no longer be able to use the old Woodside maternity hospital in East Fremantle, where patients go now for the STEPS and PUMPS programs: “These premises have been a haven for us with a quiet environment, outdoor areas to exercise, ample free

parking and the ability to park right next to the wheelchair ramp and entries for those who struggle to walk.

“Parking at Fiona Stanley Hospital will be costly for patients attending programs that run for up to five weeks.

Labor health shadow Roger Cook says the health department is using false economics if it thinks downgrading staff will save money.

He says the loss of expertise will see the unit flounder when it re opens, and that is ine cient.

“It’s ridiculous. All the advantages you will gain from the move will be lost because of mismanaging the staff.

Fremantle Labor MP Simone McGurk says the unit’s programs make a difference to hundreds of lives.

“Patients speak of this non-drug approach to chronic pain management being crucial in them being able to function, and they are incredulous that the program is being cut,” she says.

“Remember, this is a burgeoning area of medical science. Notre Dame university is about to appoint a chair in chronic pain education.

“It’s obvious that the Barnett government is using the commissioning of Fiona Stanley Hospital to cut existing health programs to fund their hopeless budget management.”

WILLAGEE’S newest park is just a tick or two away from being named Carawatha.

Work is well underway in turning the former primary school site into a park and mixed use development, and in just under a fortnight Melville city council is expected to adopt the old school’s name for the green space.

It will then be advertised for at least 14 days before being sent to WA’s geographic names committee for final endorsement.

A quick council survey of locals has already found strong support for the old school’s name, which is Noongar for “place of pines”.

by DAVID BELL

O are not stuck in tra c ou are tra c. o the billboards go.

Road congestion has long been the prime complaint of many Melville locals but new statistics show just eight per cent of Melville residents use public transport on a daily basis.

he only erth suburb we could find with a lower rate was Mandurah, at 7 per cent, where locals have to drive a car just to get to the train station. It’s half the rate of places like Claremont or Cottesloe. A less conservative survey by the RAC found about 34 per cent of its members use public transport daily but that’s a tad higher than most estimates.

At the last state election Alfred Cove Liberal MP Dean Nalder campaigned on fi ing congestion along anning Highway. Seems he may want to suggest his voters catch more buses...

• Gum trees like t is ave come down we guess for safety reasons w ile t e playground takes s ape Photo by Matthew Dwyer

One local who’s been watching the transformation is happy to see the green space, but was mortified to see contractors felling two of the site’s biggest gum trees, even though they’ve been recycled into furniture and landscaping features.

Names also up for consideration are hillip tting, the school’s first headmaster; Waitj, Noongar for a mob of emus which makes reference to an important Dreamtime story about the area; and Archibald, because it’s on Archibald Street.

Red Ochre Park was also in the mix to reflect the natural pigment’s abundance around the lakes. It was known as wilgee by Noongars and was considered so precious it was traded to places as far away as Queensland.

A PORT COOGEE landowner says he feels singled out over sand blowing off his property when plenty of other lots seem immune from council scrutiny.

udolph isic bought his investment property on ombay Heights ust before the GFC hit in 2008 and, because of the dramatic slump in property prices, put his development on ice.

He built a retaining wall at the front to hold in sand, leaving ust enough room for a driveway, but received a letter from Cockburn council earlier this year telling him it wasn’t up to scratch.

he council offered to have a contractor spray the block with dust suppression, but then went ahead without his approval.

r isic didn’t gri le too much about the stuff up and paid the bill, but is arcing up because the council’s come back telling him the ob has to be re done because of complaints.

t can’t have been a very good ob it usually lasts a year to months, r

isic says. He reckons the spray on suppressant was thinly applied and entire patches were missed.

Tradies on the vergeAdding to his grievance, much of the

sand spilling out onto the road seems to be stirred up by tradies driving on the ahara like verge, which is councilowned. He reckons the council should wear some of the cost.

r isic wasn’t alone in buying land at the wrong time, with the GFC causing many owners to mothball pro ects.

hile a recent recovery in property prices has seen renewed activity at ort

oogee, there’s still plenty of vacant blocks peppering the area, uite a few untreated and with sand flowing onto verges.

y uestion is how come some got treated and others didn’t why am being singled out r isic wonders.

Cockburn council environmental health manager Nick Jones says the suppressant program involves landowners and r isic is the only person who has ob ected .

he hydro mulch was applied to numerous blocks by an e perienced contractor, he says, adding r isic was given a detailed e planation of the program .

As for contributing to costs, that seems unlikely. “The city is dealing with sand from the verge.”

FOR decades they’ve been sneered at for their tackiness and ostentation, their concrete lions and ubiquitous pillars the butt of endless jokes, but it seems Fremantle is finally warming to its wog palaces’.

he distinctive migrant houses from the post war era are to be considered for inclusion on the city’s municipal heritage inventory ne t time it’s reviewed by Fremantle council.

he move follows an outcry from residents in alcolm treet who say the council recently approved the destruction of one of Fremantle’s best examples of the architectural style now being termed Fediterranea.

he acting director of Fremantle council’s planning department, aul

arbett, agrees the style hasn’t been given its proper respect.

he heritage values of post period buildings, including houses of an architectural style that reflect cultural values of occupants who may be migrants or descendents of migrants from Mediterranean countries, have probably not received su cient formal recognition through heritage assessment processes, Mr Garbett told the Herald.

“The City intends to take action to address this.

Fremantle mayor rad ettitt says he’s noticed the gradual warming to the style and says the council’s ust catching up with owners who already celebrate their

homes’ uropean heritage rather than trying to demolish it.

igrant architecture tells an important story about the evolution of Fremantle as a uni ue place and agree

there is a strong case for the best examples of it being heritage listed, he said.

nterestingly and fortunately I think it is a style that is becoming desirable in its own right and we are seeing owners keep migrant

architectre voluntarily. But it’s too late for the Malcolm Street

home, which has locals seething.Curtin university cultural studies

lecturer uvendrini erera led the charge.“They’re a bunch of pseudo-liberals

mas uerading as reens and abor, she thundered to the Herald about the council’s planning committee, reiterating twice she wanted that on the record.

s erera says other councils across the country are already recognising Fediterranea’s importance and given Fremantle’s strong migrant connections the council should have been ahead of the game. he says racism played a part in

ussies slagging off the homes, and the changing attitudes towards its heritage status is a sign of how families from the

editerranean are now so familiar they’re part of the furniture.

THERE’S a heap of cafes and restaurants around the Riseley Street

strip in Ardross—but none uite floated our boat as we

checked out a number of menus.

ith hope in our hearts we crossed Riseley to C15 and, as luck would have it, despite many tables bustling with diners there was outside seating available and a menu to suit the tastes of all in our party.

Having woken up late it wasn’t uite breakfast anymore but not quite lunchtime. Happily the menu is as variable as human nature and we could choose from both.

he father in law is visiting from the old country and, true to his English heritage, couldn’t go past the big breakfast.

Our eyes boggled a bit at the $25.50 price tag but the plate did come out groaning under the weight of bacon, sausages, mushrooms two hash browns, eggs and toast. The scrambled eggs were creamy and moist and the slightly thicker cut bacon cooked to perfection. So, money well spent.

My plate of linguini ($23.90) was the si e of a hubcap but had no trouble wolfing the lot.

oast pumpkin and sweet corn gave it a savoury sweetness, as did the red onion, just cooked for an enjoyable, slight crunchiness, and adding an interesting dimension to the flavours. mothered in oil and garlic my only wish was for some complimentary bread to mop up the last drop.

Mr predictable D’Angerous ave went for grilled fish and

chips . t’s pricy for F , but the giant plate of perfectly grilled fish fillets, and delicious golden chips also came with a mound of rocket salad and a homemade tartare sauce.

parkling like a ewel the

cake cabinet called so we fronted up for the di cult task of narrowing the choice.

eing rather full passed on the massive slices of rich and creamy offers to choose a dainty raspberry tart, as did the F , and the hubby was happy with his raspberry/lemon surprise.

he suprise being ust how good the berry citrus combination was. couple of very good coffees washed the lot down, and we headed into the spring sunshine feeling very good about life. Not a cheap brunch, but a damn good one.

“THIS is my beast,” print artist Susanna Castleden smiles,

pointing to a “small” section of her 30-metre work stretched along a Fremantle Arts Centre wall.

The 5-kilo roll of black paper was the only item she’d packed with certainty as she prepared to circumnavigate the globe on a mission to record her journey through frottage, the art of dry rubbing.

“I had the harrowing idea of a trip around the world without knowing where I was going,” Castleden tells the Herald.

Her “co-collaborator” took care of bookings for the non-stop journey.

“[A] complete circumnavigation…to opposing antipodean points,” the Fremantle artist says.

At a simplistic level frottage

• Susanna Castleden in ew rleans Photo supplied

is a bit like brass rubbing, reproducing an existing object—but with a more random result.

In Castleden’s case objects include a footpath in New York, a car bonnet in Florida, an airport gate in Hong Kong, and a bike rack on Rottnest.

Using black paper the result has a photo negative effect.

“I call this reverse frottage. I start with black paper and rub to reveal the white,” Castleden says.

She wanted a journey that was deeply personal, not a series of postcards.

“I was interested in a sense of place that’s not a photo.

“I couldn’t have done the Dodge bonnet in the Everglades if I wasn’t there. [In] New York there’s a bit of spit and rain.”

Rottnest Island was the starting point, its antipodean opposite Bermuda Island.

That she’d be heading to the northern hemisphere in December was a no brainer, so winter woolies went into the suitcase, but Castleden hadn’t factored in the extremes.

“I hadn’t taken into account for the fact I might be in knee-

deep snow… [In Istanbul] it rained for 24 hours…I had to do the Turkish rug in the hotel.”

Over a whirlwind three weeks she touched down in a swag of places including Singapore, Vietnam, Istanbul, Hamburg and Copenhagen before heading to North America, travelling from Ottawa to New Orleans.

Her journey’s journal ended where it began, at Rottnest: “I was coming home. It felt triumphant.”

The Round the World print trip paid off the urtin University lecturer took out second prize in this year’s prestigious Fremantle Print Award.

The award attracts national and international artists and has a reputation for challenging what prints are, says Castleden.

“It is the most experimental, because you can do things like print on grass [Holly O’Meehan’s Arrangements of a Verge].”

The Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award 2014 exhibition is on at the arts centre until November 16. Entry free.

EXHAUSTION was setting in, and I was only on the lower level

of this massive Doonegalla Road, Attadale home—with two more levels to go.

Wandering through the e pansive, five bedroomfour bathroom abode in my

elbourne up day high heels probably didn’t help, but it did allow me to feel every bit as glam as this home deserves.

The heels rang out on gleaming arrah floors and stairs as I checked out the massive theatre room, and considered slumping into one of the five couches—not to watch a movie mind, but to take in the view across the garden and huge

metre pool to the river. Ok, and maybe ust a short nap.

hree of the bedrooms are on this level, including a guest suite with ensuite and a walk in robe.

Should guests get a thirst in the night there’s a massive wine cellar nearby, complete with its own air conditioning.

Heading daintily upstairs I discovered a gargantuan open living dining kitchen, light flooding in through a wall of glass. leaming black granite tops metres of bench space on the lovely, soft honey coloured timber cupboards, including three pantries.

With views of the river and city imagine it’s easy for the cook to get distracted.

o it’s a good thing the wide balcony off the dining

area morphs into an even larger alfresco space, complete with built in barbecue and a woodfired pi a oven, making entertaining a bree e.

I suspect the vendor enjoys having a mob over, something confirmed as click clacked my way to the upper level to discover a bar entertainment area that would put many a commercial outfit in the shade.

Fancy, coloured lighting highlights shadow bo shelving,

there’s a glass dishwasher and an ice machine—and three sets of beer taps.

And huge glass doors lead to a balcony where there’s a second barbecue kitchen.

he main bedroom is in this eyrie, a collossal area with a walk in robe dressing room and huge ensuite.

The only thing missing was a comfy chair, thought, clickclacking my way back to the real world.

FREMANTLE architect Gerard McCann’s sensitive extensions on

heritage homes are always worth looking at, so I was very interested in checking out a house he’d designed from scratch.

Of course I wasn’t disappointed with this stunningly modern four-bedroom home on Gordon Street, East Fremantle.

And I was rather impressed he set himself the challenge of more-or-less designing it around keeping a pool, left behind after the block fronting Preston Point Road was subdivided.

With 445sqm of land to play with the result is amazing, with massive columns around the pool supporting the soaring home rising above, and providing protection against the blazing sun for those in the water.

Protected by high garden walls there’s room for a swathe of grass for the kids to play, and a great barbecue kitchen with its own stereo system.

Tomato sauce empty? Just use the intercom to call for a back-up. And with a wall-mounted TV you can bob gently in the cooling water without missing your favourite program.

Three of the bedrooms are on the ground floor, all double.

Head upstairs and you’ll find a massive open plan living/dining/kitchen, with the same stunning honey-gold timber floors as the lower level.

Massive windows ensure plenty of light, and from the kitchen sink you can see the river and Perth skyline.

The vendor reckons the view is a moving feast, with dragon boats, launches and yachts on the river and people walking their dogs or jogging in the park.

You can see the Royal Show fireworks from the living room.

And watch local cricket on nearby Henry Jeffery Oval from the comfort of the lounge room.

“[And] you can see the lights at Subi Oval and feel like your there [for the footy].”

Everything is slick and modern in this spacious home, and the generous kitchen has everything today’s chefs demand.

The main bedroom is a sweeping space, with stunning views up the river. Which having put it to the test I can guarantee are just as good reclining on the bed.

An ensuite, with lovely French sandstone floors and walls and a generous walk-in robe makes this the perfect parents’ retreat.

With the river and parks virtually on your doorstep, and no shortage of shops and cafes a short drive away, this really is a great home in a fantastic location.

WARNING: Don’t call any electrican until you read this

Not all Electricians are the same... most contractors don’t turn up when they say, if at all & when they do they are often rude, unpleasant & leave you with an unfair bill, a messy

house & feeling really annoyed.Hi, I’m Dave from “My Sparky”. I know good, reliable tradies are

hard to fi nd, that’s why I guarantee you’ll have me arrive

on time. I’ll be courteous, respectful & in uniform. I will

only do the best quality work - no short cuts, then clean up after

the job & leave you with a smile. If you’re not happy at the end

you’ll receive $50 cash, on me.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)Keep your eye on the aims that most ignite your passion, around what you

want to contribute to the world. You might have to gamble a little to get to the real thread of your calling. There are doors with your name on them waiting to be opened. Be prepared to follow through.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20) The Moon is full in Taurus at the beginning of the week. This gives you a lot of light

and a lot of power. Emotional issues that have been bothering you disappear in the clarity of the lunar glow. This moment of integration is important. Recognise it, understand it and ride it with skill.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) As relationships begin to impact you more, so it’s time to come out of the

dream. Begin dealing with emotional matters that have been lingering under the surface. The moment you do, your fears disappear into smoke. Name things. Talk about them. Something new will be created.

CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22)The Moon is only just waning, after having been magnificently full. You will

have been impacted in a positive way. A gorgeous Taurus full Moon gives you ground and strength. This is the strength you need to call on, as you encourage someone close to you to find their feet.

LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)In your immediate environment, there are some decidedly tricky

negotiations going on. It will be by having a handle on long-term goals, that you will get the clarity to find your way through what’s in front of your nose. Unravel the knots, one strand at a time. You will find your way.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)The full Moon fills you with the sense that you are experiencing a harvest. This is a

season for enjoying the sweetness of the fruits of your patience, awareness and love. Turn whatever moments of balance and harmony life gifts you, into the ground for your next adventure.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)Keep your eye on the big picture. That’s where you will be most able to read the

script of joy. You may find other people’s impatience and ambition contentious. Use your understanding to find a practical path through the maze of difference. Don’t be put off. Don’t judge yourself.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)The Sun, Venus and Saturn, are in close proximity to each other.

They are all illuminated by the full Moon. This Moon will make you see things that are true but which are also uncomfortable. Put your reactive sting aside. Trust in your capacity to be open, impacted and transformed.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)The moment a person takes a position, it invariably creates all sorts of ripples.

When one’s nature is to let loose arrows, then a tide of controversy is bound to be an on-going story. Your gifts of truth are usually delivered in innocence but they do have an impact. Keep adding awareness.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)When you are attuned to people’s feelings and they are attuned to you,

then all sorts of positive outcomes follow. Emotional connection is very important for goats. It creates trust; and when there’s trust, your capacity to build things goes beautifully wild. Avoid pointless clashes.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)To really be able to give what you have to give, to the world at large, it is important

first to be selfish – in the sense of knowing and looking after your needs. If you are happy, then you will be expansive. This is a hot point right now. Feed yourself the love, care and healing you need.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)The full Moon invites you to get your feet firmly planted in the world of the

senses. The good thing about the senses is that they are in the here and now. Accept this invitation and come out of any reverie that is robbing you of this pregnant moment. That done, everything will flow.

WALKER WINNERS

ARPIL IN PARIS

Congratulations DAVID BASSETT of BEACONSFIELD, JACK AULDIST of SOUTH

FREMANTLE and CAROLINE BUT of HIGHGATE. You’ve each won a double pass to see Joe Walker at the Fly by Night on Thursday night. Your names are on the door. Have a blast!

Al and Bet are not what you’d call ‘love’s young dream’. Bet’s bored, Al’s at his wits end and they’re stuck in a romance rut! Then out of the blue the passionless pair win a holiday to Paris! Will the city of love rekindle some life into this dying relationship? Will they succumb to the allure of l’amour in gay Paris? Or will it be battle-stations amongst the boulevards?

Featuring award winning actors Alan Morris as Al and Nicola Bond as Bet, April in Paris (nominated for the 1994 Olivier Comedy of the Year), is an irresistible dose of pathos and humour. April in Paris is a delicately wrought comedy filled with raucous indelicate dialogue. Left half-broke by Al’s continuing unemployment, the couple bicker about everything from having no hot water, to Al’s uninspired black-and-white paintings to Bet’s obsession with magazine competitions.

Join this intrepid pair as they sample the delights of the continent. Will Paris persuade them that they are the perfect partnership or is this the end of ‘la rue’ for Al and Bet?

Book @ www.TAZTIX.com.au or 9255 3336. Members of Harbour Theatre and Friends of MosArts can book on 9433 6260.

Stuck for a gift for Christmas? Why not give your loved ones the gift of comedy with a ticket to April in Paris.

I am a Personal Stylist for real women of all shapes and sizes. I believe being stylish is a skill that can be learnt and that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to achieve it. I often get comments on my own style, which is achieved on a minimal budget. I use my innate sense of what works. I am able to relate to people in a way that makes them feel good about themselves. I take time discussing what the client likes, I learn about their lifestyle and needs before I show them how to find clothing that will enhance their own style. My desire is to help real women to enrich and enhance their own style, so they can move forward in their life with confidence.

One of my favourites style sessions is the wardrobe re-style; I show people how to dress to enhance their style with their own clothes. Often women already have everything they need in their wardrobe; they just need help to know how to put it all together.

LIVE THE BOHEMIAN LIFE!I have created a pamper pack of items that

you can use to immediately refresh your style. I have included a gift voucher for a full session with your personal stylist for 2hours this can be taken as either a Wardrobe Re-style or Shopping Re-style.

Come and see me for a limited time at Viva Personal Styling – Pop-UP Stylist until 27th November at Shop 15, Atwell Arcade, Fremantle.
