A very busy meeting today - lots of information packed into one hour. I can assure you it won’t be like that every week as time for fellowship is vitally important. Despite a few initial hiccups on my part, I hope everyone who attended enjoyed the meeting. Many highlights, but Tom Dobeli’s passionate and informative wrap up of the recent working trip to Samoa with Ken Gilchrist and two other Rotarians was a standout. Special thanks to Bryan McMahon for coping with the changes and doing a great job as Sergeant - very few of us escaped some very clever and well thought out fines. I did get some feedback that the Guest Speaker was a little hard to hear from members at the back of the room - we’ll try and get that rectified for next meeting. Welcome of Visitors / Guests Rick Reid our new Assistant Governor for Goldfields Cluster (member of the Rotary Club of Echuca Moama) accompanied by his wife Vicki were our special guests for today’s meeting. Rick gave a brief introduction of himself, a Rotarian of 7 years and currently the International Director at his Club. Rick works in HR for Fonterra at Echuca and is looking forward to the AG role and getting to know the Bendigo clubs better. Martin Leach, Managing Director of Bendigo Property Services, was my guest and thanks to Greg Bickley who looked after Martin during the meeting. Our guest speaker was Patrick Falconer from Bendigo Business Council whom was introduced by Peter Reading. See Guest Speaker Summary. COMING UP:

Welcome of Visitors / GuestsRick Reid our new Assistant Governor for Goldfields Cluster (member of the Rotary Club of Echuca Moama) accompanied by his wife Vicki were our special guests for today’s meeting.

MessagesRosalie reported to me that Val Broad was still in St Vincent’s Hospital (now 5 weeks) - a card from the Club was circulated at today’s meeting passing on our greetings and best wishes which we hope will lift Val’s spirits.

Rotary BusinessAG Visit - Rick Reid, Assistant Governor, met with members of the board prior to today’s meeting to discuss and review the Club’s plans and offer District support on a number of initiatives.

District Marketing & Membership Seminar 11/8/12 (Kew) - 9.30am to 1.00pm. Invite Flyer to be circulated to Board and Membership Committee. Members welcome to attend.

Directory - some omissions (and assumptions) have been rightly brought to my attention. If you have any concerns - don’t hesitate to contact me, after all Rotary is a volunteer organisation!

Inner Wheel Changeover - held 9 July 2012 with outgoing President Jeni Watts handing over to Gwen Rankins. Thank you to Rosalie Vanstan who attended to represent our Club, and as a Past President of Inner Wheel herself. We wish Gwen well and look forward to working with Inner Wheel during the year.

Youth Exchange - Alida Robinson gave a run down on the first week in Bendigo for our new exchange student, Zsofi from Hungary. Wow what a busy week - Camels, Dinners, Prattys Patch Gig, AFL , and Day One at Girton - no wonder we didn’t see Zsofi today. We look forward to meeting Zsofi next week - rumour has it she has adopted Hawthorn as her AFL club.

Vibe Alive - Indigenous Youth Festival is in Bendigo 8 & 9 August 2012. Volunteers needed to help out with brekkie catering 6.45am to 9.00am - see me/Kurt if you can help out.

Rebuilding Samoa - Rotarian Tom Dobeli gave a snappy slide presentation on the most recent trip to Samoa - a team of four Tom, Ken, Paul Kirkpatrick and a Rotarian from Flemington which involved some significant works at Asua Primary School.

Over 4 1/2 days with the help of local “traddies”, 10 classrooms and a staff room was painted, 22

blackboards and 26 doors painted, library painted and new shelves constructed, coco wire fitted to windows on first floor, new water tank constructed, new sprouting and downpipes installed, exterior of building painted on 2 sides and 5 external lights installed.

The passion and enthusiasm of Tom talking about this trip was infectious and had the whole audience captivated. The Club has a wonderful history and relationship supporting Samoa - it is obviously a very rewarding and fulfilling experience of which many of our members know because they have been themselves, some multiple times.

As announced at recent changeover, a visit to the Rotary Club of Samoa in mid 2013 is in the planning stage to commemorate over 20 years of this wonderful relationship.

Next WeekNext week we host speakers from the Education and Indigenous Community on the topic “Achieving great outcomes for indigenous students”. We also hope to introduce our Australian Rotary Health Indigenous Medical Scholarship recipient, Kayla Bennett. Be safe - see you next week.

Guest Speaker Summary - Patrick Falconer, Bendigo Business Council (BBC).Patrick gave us his background, being sales and marketing roles in the UK, Australia and a brief stint in Singapore, before purchasing a mortgage broking business in Bendigo some 11 years ago and settling here with his wife Margot (also a recent guest speaker at the Club, General Manager of Bendigo Advertiser).

The BBC was formed 4 years ago as an amalgamation of two business groups, the Bendigo Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Central Victorian Business Network with the goal of streamlining and having one business representative body in Bendigo.

Currently the BBC has over 250 members - the aim is for 300 plus as the size of our representative business body is smaller than Ballarat, a comparable sized city. Patrick is working hard in the initial months to find out what the business community wants out of a representative body and how to attract and retain members - that sounds familiar with challenges faced by Rotary.

Patrick took on the Executive Officer role in February 2012 and shared where the BBC was at today - communicating through weekly E-news, Networking Events during the year, Website, other chapters including “Womeni.s.e. & YPN, strong board of directors and a mix of major sponsors and media partners.

Patrick then moved on to where he would like to see the BBC - advocacy-round table business forums,

strong representation to government, business 2 business opportunities, increase networking events, membership growth and partnerships with business. The high speed railway and reclaiming history that Bendigo was the gold mining giant (not Ballarat!) was a personal passion of Patricks.

Question time brought up some interesting points, not least that the name itself Bendigo Business Council may not actually reflect the identity or vision of the business body - could a name change be driven by a Rotary idea!. The abbreviations BBC, also could confuse many in the community.

Peter Reading thanked Patrick for his informative talk and presented him with the gift of Timor Leste Soap with members and guest then showing their appreciation.

GOODBYE Mens Health Week Barbecue

Thursday September 6th

In September The Rotary Club of Bendigo will again be providing a Barbecue for the Mens Health Week function at the Capital theatre.

The format will be similar to previous years however we will be providing a healthier service. Rather than the usual culinary delights of a “fry up” we plan to serve up a healthier option of Chicken and Vegetable wraps.

To this end I’d like to pull together a list of volunteers that can assist in providing this important service.

We’ll need people to help with the setting up of the barbecue facility during the day together with the preparation of the food etc.

We’ll also need as many budding Masterchefs as possible for the evening to do the actual cooking and serving.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Could you please let me know if you can help out and if so what times you will be available on the day.

I’ll obviously provide more detail once I’ve got an idea of who can make themselves available.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Mike Hughes
