Thank you to Hugh Wheeler and Noel Hobley for covering my absence last week. I understand the Speaker (Honourable Treasurer Wayne Smith) did his best to convince you he has the goods to take over from “Swanny” if the position comes up.

Great meeting today - with an injection of youth bringing down the average attendance age quite considerably this week!. We welcomed Zsofi our exchange student and guest speaker for the day, two outgoing Youth Exchange Students Ella Toll and Gabby Giggins, Kate Toll (Ella’s mum) and Nina Robertson, a previous outgoing student and whose family will be hosting Zsofi in the New Year.

Good to see Des Samson back from Qld and on his feet after a recent fall, and Glenn Reilly who gave me licence to introduce him as a visiting Rotarian!. Special thanks to Peter Reading who filled in as Sergeant with very short notice - great job and I’ll remember Oysters Kill Patrick!!

Bryan McMahon on behalf of Glenn took to the podium during meeting and asked all to trust him! - selling invisible raffle tickets in support of Glenn’s Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) upcoming Golf Day. A great cause and I know many members supported this and bought tickets.

Swap Meeting 15-18 November.

I urge all members to support the coordinators and put up your hand to help where you can - Rosters now circulating, see Libby Hughes. As the largest Rotary Club of Bendigo, we need to pull our weight and contribute to this worthy combined Club fund-raiser.

Backyard Blitz (Flood Recovery)Rotary Club of Kangaroo Flat have organised buses to run up and back to Charlton on Saturday 27 October and Sunday 28 October to provide free transport to Rotarians, Partners, Family and Friends whom would like to help out on this weekend. Book via coordinator Charlie Bovalino (5441 1945).

Penna BreakfastWe had earmarked Sunday 11 November 2012 for the great Penna Breakfast. Due to busyness of the Rotary calendar, and that we had overlooked 11/11 as Remembrance Day, we have decided to defer the breakfast until Feb/March 2013 - Barry will keep the club informed.

GUEST SPEAKER NOTESWhat a fabulous talk from Zsofia, very confident and a beautiful powerpoint presentation to help illustrate her country Hungary. See Zsofi’s notes below

I do want to specially mention a very important point made by Ray Paulsen at the end of Zsofi’s talk - that to enrich the experience of visiting Youth Exchange Students, all members are encouraged to consider how they might be able to host Zsofi on an outing/activity (let’s not just leave it to the host parents who take on an enormous role as it is).

THE FOUR WAY TEST

of the things we think, say or do...

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all conerned?

“Just a reminder pencil in Friday night, October 26th for our GOLF NIGHT in support of Operation Cleft.Stephen Rechter from Audi Centre Bendigo has very kindly agreed to be the major sponsor once again so please drop in and see Stephen and pass on your thanks. Our club has changed the lives of 116 children over the last 4 years and Glenn Reilly is keen to see a couple of Rotary teams playing and needs some volunteers to help with the event. Please ask your contacts if they would like to play, team entry cost is ‘one operation’ so not only will it be a great fun night but each team is making a massive difference to one young person who was unlucky enough to be born in the wrong country. See Glenn and his committee if any queries or see entry forms [email protected]

Dear fellow Rotarian, Australian Rotary Health is once again running its mental health research awareness day and I’m writing to you all individually to make you aware of Hat Day, and to ask you to join in, both in your club and in your workplace. Have a Hat Day at work. There are lots of themes you could take, but the aim is to collect money and have a good time doing it. Get your staff and workmates involved, and get Mental Health on the improve. Last year was the first time we ran it, and it was a very, very successful day. However the main thrust came from Clubs and their members.

We want to make this a national day, involving everyone, and yes we do need funds. Like all groups, we have been hit by the GFC and need resources to keep up our research programs. So get your workmates involved. If you’re not working, get into the clubs and other groups you associate with. The wider we spread this message, the better the chances of making the lives of so many so much better. Thanks for all you have been doing for Rotary. It is very much appreciated. Keep well,

Patrick
