1. Resistance to pyrethroid insecticides in corn earworms. This project is the basis of Alana Jacobson’s MS research project. We are looking at quantifying the levels of resistance in populations of corn earworms from two locations in Indiana, as well as locations in Illinois and Minnesota. One of the comparisons of interest is the levels of resistance in overwintering versus migratory populations, since Indiana has both infesting sweet corn. This project is being conducted in conjunction with the Universities of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois and Green Giant and DelMonte Foods. 2. Alternative management strategies for soil insects on early-planted melons. For many years, Indiana melon growers have relied on carbofuran to control seedcorn maggots and wireworms. USEPA is now proposing to revoke the registration of carbofuran on cucurbit crops. There are only two chemical alternatives both in the same chemical class, that have had only limited testing and commercial use. This project will look at chemical and non-chemical approaches to managing these early season pests. 3. Management strategies for plum curculio on apple. In recent years, plum curculio has emerged as a more serious pests of apples in the Midwest. Part of the increase damage may be attributed to loss of some pesticide use from FQPA and additional FQPA motivated restrictions on the remaining pesticides may further complicate the system. This study will look at improved timing of pesticide applications for control of plum curculio, as well as the effectiveness of some of the new reduced-risk products. 4. Organic apple production. We will continue with the long term study to determine the feasibility of growing apples organically in the Midwest. Both varieties of apples are in peak production and emphasis will be on improved quality of the fruit produced. 5. Pending approval of a Rice Grant proposal, I will initiate a multi-year study of the effects of high tunnels on population dynamics of pest insects and their natural enemies on selected tree fruits, small fruits, and vegetables. This will be a collaborative effort that will include horticulturists and plant pathologists. 6. Management of whitefly vectored viruses of tomatoes in West Africa. I am completing my involvement of the studies of whitefly vectored viruses of tomatoes in West Africa. We have identified several unique gemini viruses and sequenced the genomes. We have also introduced a number of potentially resistant or tolerant varieties for trial in a number of West African nations. We have attempted to establish host free periods of 2-3 months in various tomato production areas to reduce the amount of virus present in the environment prior to planting of the tomato crop. These strategies have been successfully implemented in one growing region in Mali and now we are attempting to transfer the technology to other production areas in Mali, as well as Burkina Faso, Niger, Benin, Togo, Ghana, and Senegal. Moussa Noussourou will complete his PhD research in March 2008. Several publications should follow. 7. Evidence of Collaborative Activity: 1. Corn earworm studies are conducted in cooperation with the Universities of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois and the vegetable processing industry. 2. Melon studies are done in cooperation with Dan Egel at SWPAP. 4. Organic apple studies are done in collaboration with Peter Hirst and Janna Beckerman. 5. The high tunnel research will be conducted in collaboration with Peter Hirst, Bruce Bordelon, Janna Beckerman, Steve Weller, and Liz Maynard. 6. The West Africa project is funded by IPM/CRSP and ABSPII projects and I work primarily with Dr. Bob Gilbertson from UC-Davis, but also with collaborators from each of the participating countries.

EXCELLENCE IN CONTINUING EDUCATION AND/OR SERVICE 1. Description of Major Program a. Extension Entomologist – Fruits and Vegetables: This is my primary responsibility in Extension. With the departure of Frankie Lam, I am again the only Purdue Extension Entomologist who covers vegetables and I continue with statewide responsibilities for fruit entomology. Currently, I am maintaining a fairly traditional Extension program by providing information to growers through publications, web sites, newsletters, presentations at conferences and field days, and one-on-one consultations. b. Extension Coordinator: I am responsible for managing the Extension budget, and supervising Tammy Luck, John Obermeyer, Tim Gibb, and Larry Bledsoe. I also am responsible for overseeing the overall Extension effort in Entomology, including making sure publications are up to date, preparing various reports for Ag Administration, reviewing Extension programs of faculty and staff for the Department Head, and representing Entomology at ANR Coordinators meetings. c. IPM Coordinator: I serve as the IPM coordinator for Purdue University. My duties include preparing and submitting plans of work and annual reports and overseeing the budget so that federal guidelines are followed. Virtually all of the IPM budget goes to salary, so there are few if any opportunities to do more creative activities with these funds. I was chosen to serve on the NC IPM Center Stakeholder Panel representing the Land Grant universities. I was also asked to participate in a panel to investigate ways to get greater involvement of NRCS in pest management activities. d. SARE Coordinator: From 2004-07, I served as the Indiana SARE Coordinator. My duties included preparing and submitting annual plans of work and reports and overseeing the budget. As part of those duties, I co-chaired the Small Farms and Sustainable Agriculture Team which consists of about 20 educators and specialists. This team sponsors a series of professional development programs for Extension and other educators including workshops, farm and other ag related industry tours, and short courses. I represented Purdue twice each year at meetings of the NCR SARE coordinators. One of my responsibilities was to increase awareness, knowledge and activity of Purdue Extension Educators with regard to sustainable agriculture. A base line survey was conducted in 2003 that showed that Extension Educators in Indiana were not very aware of or involved in sustainable agriculture programs. A follow- up survey in 2006 showed a major shift in attitudes, knowledge and behavior of Purdue Extension Educators. Through the activities of the Small Farms Team, we have begun to form a partnership with members of the ISDA. Some of our programs are now jointly sponsored by Purdue Extension and ISDA.

Relationship Between Extension and Research Virtually all of my research activities are designed to provide me information to disseminate in my extension program. Likewise, ideas for my research program are often generated by questions posed by growers, or problems that come to my attention in my extension program. As a result, it has become increasingly difficult to differentiate between applied research and extension because the two are so intertwined. 7. Student Counseling and Advisement: None 8.
