SUMMER BIBLE STUDY/ADULT FORMATION BEGINS JULY 9
One month from now, we’ll begin a five week program on one of my favorite topics: Biblical Eschatology & The Four Last Things. Now, I apologize for the big, unfamiliar word, but it’s the only one capable of fully defining the topic; eschatology means ―the last, the farthest, relating to the end‖ and it is the study of the eschaton—the end times or the last days—what we commonly call ―the end of the world‖ although that’s really a misnomer for the way biblical lit-erature and theology consider the topic. And ―the four last things‖ refers to death, judgment, heaven and hell.
At any rate, we’ll be looking at both Old and New Testament books, particularly Ezekiel, Daniel, I & II Thessalonians, a few parts of Matthew and Mark and, of course, the Book of Revelation. We’ll also consider what some of the 20th century’s greatest theolo-gians had to say on the topic, among them Karl Rahner, Joseph Ratzinger and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, and we’ll even look at some great poetry from T.S. Eliot and Gerard Manley Hopkins. So here is the schedule, with all sessions on Tuesday night, beginning at 7:00p.m. in the Tolton Room in the school:
July 9 – Introduction: Eschatology & Apocalyptic (literally ―revealing‖) Literature. We’ll consider passages from Ezekiel, Daniel and Revelation.
July 16 – Thessalonians & Gospel texts relating to the Escha-
ton, primarily in Mark, but echoed in Matthew & Luke.
July 23 – Death & Judgment (Particular & General); Purga-
tory. Here, we’ll focus on passages in Matthew and in Paul’s letters to the Churches in Rome & Corinth.
July 30 – Heaven & Hell. We’ll look at Wisdom literature as well as several New Testament passages, but the main focus will be on the writings of Karl Rahner and Joseph Ratzinger.
August 6 – Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Noogenesis. Apologies for that odd new word, but Chardin coined it to mean ―a world that is being born rather than a world that sim-ply is.‖ Chardin’s groundbreaking reflections on eschatology in the middle of the 20th century remain the gold standard for exploring this topic and a great way to conclude these sessions.

are in need. The South Suburban Catholic Charities Food Pantry needs
YOU. They greatly appreciate your donations of cereal, pasta & sauce,
tuna, canned chicken or meat, all canned goods---all non-perishable food
items. Please bring your donations to our quarterly Food Drive before all
masses on June 22—23.
If you prefer, cash or checks can be given to the volunteers collecting

GOSPEL READING
John 20:19-23
Jesus appears to his disciples and
gives them the gift of the Holy Spirit.
FAMILY CONNECTION Pentecost is sometimes called the
birthday of the Church. The Gospel
for Pentecost reminds us that the
Church begins with the command to
forgive. Within the family, the domes-
tic Church, we learn how to forgive
and we learn to accept forgiveness. It
is the gift of the Holy Spirit that en-
ables us to do both. Today is a fitting
time to share a family celebration of
reconciliation.
As you gather together as a family,
sit quietly for a few minutes, inviting
all to reflect upon their need to for-
give and to receive forgiveness. If
there is a situation or issue within
the family that needs attention,
spend some time reflecting upon the
concern and how your family might
address it. Read together today's
Gospel, John 20:19-23. Talk together
about how Jesus gave us the gift of
the Holy Spirit to help us in the work
of forgiveness and to bring us peace.
Pray together today's psalm, or the
Prayer to the Holy Spirit, asking that
the Holy Spirit help your family. Share
with one another the sign of peace.

Our Faith BACKGROUND ON THE GOSPEL READING
The season of Easter concludes with today's celebration, the feast of
Pentecost. On Pentecost we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon
the Apostles gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem; this event marks
the beginning of the Church. The story of Pentecost is found in the Acts
of the Apostles, today's first reading. The account in today's Gospel,
taken from the Gospel of John, also recounts how Jesus gave the gift of
the Holy Spirit to his disciples. There is no need to try to reconcile these
two accounts to each other. It is enough to know that, after his death,
Jesus fulfilled his promise to send to his disciples a helper, an advocate,
who would enable them to be his witnesses throughout the world.
We previously heard today's Gospel on the second Sunday of Easter. At
that time, we also heard the passage that follows, which describes Jesus'
appearance to Thomas. In that context, we were led to reflect on belief
and unbelief.
In the context of the feast of Pentecost, this reading reminds us about
the integral connection between the gifts of peace and forgiveness and
the action of the Holy Spirit. Jesus greets his disciples with the gift of
peace. Jesus then commissions his disciples to continue the work that
he has begun, ―As the Father has sent me, so I send you.‖ As he
breathes the Holy Spirit upon them, Jesus sends his disciples to continue
his work of reconciliation through the forgiveness of sins.
This Gospel reminds us that the Church is called to be a reconciling pres-
ence in the world. This reconciling presence of Christ is celebrated in the
Church's sacramental life. In the Sacrament of Baptism, we are washed
clean from sin and become a new creation in Christ. In the Sacrament of
Penance, the Church celebrates the mercy of God in forgiving sins. This
reconciling presence is also to be a way of life for Christians. In situations
of conflict, we are to be agents of peace and harmony among people.

SAINT EPHREM — Feast day June 9
Ephrem was born about 306 in a land that is today called Turkey. He was
ordained a deacon and became a well-known teacher. Years later, his
bishop suggested that Ephrem be a priest. Ephrem begged the bishop to
allow him to stay a deacon because he thought he was not good enough to
be a priest. When the Persian army conquered his homeland, Ephrem es-
caped to the mountains and lived as a monk alone in a cave. People came
to listen to him and ask for help with their problems. At this time, Ephrem
did a lot of writing. His homilies were popular, as were his religious po-
ems. He also took the songs that heretics were teaching and changed the
words to teach the truths of the Catholic faith. Ephrem was one of the first
to write songs for the liturgy of the Church.
He has been called “Harp of the Holy Spirit.” Quite a few of his homilies
and hymns are devoted to Mary, the Mother of God. Ephrem died about
373. The Church later named him a Doctor of the Church.

For Your Information 5 STEPS TO TRY TO REPAIR YOUR REPUTATION
By: Brianna Wunsch
Are you suffering from a situation in which your reputation was dam-
aged? It can be stressful and tough to deal with. But there are ways to
improve it.
Dr. Andrew Pahl, an internal medicine doctor at Aurora Health Center in
Kaukauna, Wis., has coached various patients through difficult sea-
sons in their lives, and in doing so, has learned what can help.
1. Say you’re sorry if you were in the wrong and be sincere about it.
Saying you’re sorry doesn’t make you look weak. It makes you look
responsible. Make a plan for how you intend to repair the situation.
―Explain where you went wrong so they know you understand what
happened,‖ says Dr. Pahl. ―Then let them know what you’re going to
do in the future to correct it or make up for it.‖
2. Consistency is key.
If the mistake was large enough, it will take time for people to trust
you again. Being genuinely consistent in your plan, your words and
your actions are the cornerstones of restoring your reputation. ―I tell
people to make and post encouraging notes where you can easily
see them that remind you of your goal,‖ Dr. Pahl says. ―It’s a great
way to keep yourself on track.‖
3. Find a trustworthy listening ear.
―It’s important to remember that you’re not alone in this,‖ says Dr.
Pahl. ―Work on making it right, but don’t think less of yourself be-
cause of it. Everybody makes mistakes.‖ You may feel there is no
way you can confide in somebody about what you did to damage
your reputation but putting those feelings aside and talking to a
person you trust or a therapist about what happened can be cathar-
tic and enlightening.
4. Ignore the negative commentary.
People talk, and there is nothing you can do about that. However,
you don’t have to accept invitations to negativity parties. Though it
may be difficult, train yourself to tune out those comments and
keep pushing on toward your plan of self-betterment.
5. Learn from the situation.
Nothing teaches better than mistakes. And chances are, if you
make a big mistake, you probably won’t make it again. And if
they’re just not ready to get over it, be at peace knowing you did
everything you could to make amends.
