E. Clarke Emergency Pavilion, named after localphilanthropist and honorary Baptist HealthFoundation Board member Victor E. Clarke. His $10million donation is the lead gift in the Foundation’scampaign to raise $25 million. “Mr. Clarke under-stands the challenges faced by the caregivers in ourEmergency Center, who struggle to provide qualitymedical care in a facility that has outgrown itscapacity,” said Baptist Hospital CEO Bo Boulenger.“His generous contribution will help us save livesand provide technology and services that would nothave been possible without his extraordinary gift.”

This is not the first time Mr. Clarke’s generosityhas benefited Baptist Health. His initial gifts of landand money to the Foundation were valued at nearly$2 million. These donations helped purchase a mag-netic resonance angiography (MRA) machine forBaptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute, where he had avascular procedure. He has also been recognized at

A New Baptist Hospital Emergency Center

Baptist Hospital Ball Raises More than $365,000

A new Emergency Center is being built atBaptist Hospital as part of the largest expansion project in the hospital’s history.

The Emergency Center and an additional 96inpatient beds will be housed in the four-story Victor

the South Miami Hospital campus with the Victor E.Clarke Education Center, which was brought tofruition through his generosity. “Everyone associatedwith Baptist Health owes Mr. Clarke heartfelt thanksand appreciation,” said Bob Baal, CEO of BaptistHealth Foundation.

A crowded ER at Baptist Hospital is not unique.Between 1994 and 2004, the number of visits toFlorida’s emergency rooms increased 40 percent,according to the Florida Agency for Health CareAdministration. Baptist Hospital has about 74,000patient visits annually in an emergency room thatwas built 21 years ago to handle 40,000 visits.

The new Emergency Center will be one of thelargest in Florida. Located on the first floor of thenew Pavilion, it will house 100 exam rooms, includ-ing six state-of-the-art trauma rooms. Twenty of theexam rooms and two of the trauma rooms will be ina separate Children’s Emergency Center, which willhave its own reception area.

Also included in the 654,000-square-foot expan-sion project is a seven-story garage and renovationof the existing emergency room to create a newimaging center, laboratory and pharmacy.Groundbreaking for the new Emergency Center tookplace in July and the Center is scheduled to open in2008. The new building will be on the east side of thehospital campus, near the existing emergency room.

Above the Emergency Center will be two floors

of private patient rooms that will bring the hospital’stotal bed count to 673 from 577. Each floor willhave two identical 24-bed nursing units. The 96patient rooms can be easily converted to care forpatients ranging from the critically ill to those withmore routine medical or surgical conditions. Eachroom can also be adapted to inpatient or outpatientcare, so that patients can stay in the same room evenif their condition changes. Larger than traditionalpatient rooms, the new rooms will provide comfort-able areas for family members, as well as Internetaccess and other high-tech features. The fourth floorof the Pavilion will be shelled space that can accom-modate another 48 beds when needed.

Doctors, nurses and other caregivers workedclosely with the design team during the planningphase. “We used mock-ups of each room and treat-ment area to determine the optimal placement ofsupplies and equipment,” said Becky Montesino,R.N., who manages the Emergency Center. “Thefocus of our design was to improve visibility andefficiency so that our caretakers can spend moretime at the patient’s bedside. We are extremely proudof what we are creating for our community.”

More than 750 guests celebrated “Winter in theTropics” at the eighth annual Homestead HospitalPineapple Gala, raising a record $130,000 to benefitchildren’s services and the Center for Excellence inNursing at the new Homestead Hospital. Hosted bythe Homestead-Miami Speedway and sponsored bySan Remo Homes of Florida City, the festivities tookplace on Nov. 10.

For a $100 donation, patrons experienced thethrill of speeding around the track for three laps in aprofessional race car, compliments of the RichardPetty Driving Experience.

It’s the first newhospital to be built in Miami-Dade County in 30years, located one mile east of the Florida Turnpikeon the north side of Campbell Drive (SW 312Street). To broaden healthcare services for thegrowing population of South Miami-Dade County,it will be three times larger than the existingHomestead Hospital.

Pineapple Gala Raises $130,000 for New Homestead Hospital

The Homestead Hospital Foundation is proud topresent the Eighth Annual Lucerne-GossmanMemorial Backcountry Fishing Competition April20-22. This event honors the memory of fishingenthusiasts Herman Lucerne and Rudy Gossman,DMD. Dr. Gossman, an oral surgeon and chief of theHomestead Hospital medical staff, died in a tragicaccident in the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma. Mr.Lucerne, who died after Hurricane Andrew and forwhom the tournament was originally named, was a

local businessman and mayor of Florida City.Last year’s catch-and-release tournament

attracted more than 55 boats and 115 anglers. Thisyear the entry fee is $300 per angler until April 1and $325 after that. Prizes will be awarded.

While golfers at the 14th Annual South MiamiHospital Golf Classic strived for strokes under par,their generosity netted the hospital’s ChildDevelopment Center a record-setting prize purse.More than 250 players from 51 companies took onthe White, Gold and Blue Monster courses at theDoral Golf Resort and Spa on Oct. 25 raising$160,000 to help children reach their full potential.

All the companies that participated came outwinners, said tournament chairman Bill Baldwin,president of Pro Golf of Miami and a Baptist HealthFoundation Board member. “Investing in the children of our community is a sound business decision,” he said. “Donating to beneficiaries likethe Child Development Center keeps companiesfocused on the future of our community by helpingour children succeed.”

South Miami Hospital’s Child DevelopmentCenter has treated infants and children who have orare at risk for developmental delays or disabilitiessince 1993. The Center provides quality pediatricdevelopment assessment, intervention and care.

“We’re grateful to South Miami Hospital’sFoundation for supporting our programs throughfunds raised by the golf tournament,” said Carmen de Lerma, M.D., medical director of the ChildDevelopment Center. “We provide children with thetools they need to become everything they can be.”

After touring the gardens, physicians includingJim Stewart, M.D., John Dylewski, M.D., StevenOlszewski, M.D., and Barry Halpern, M.D., talkedabout their experiences working with the SouthMiami Hospital Foundation to help patients whowant to make a donation to support hospital services.Dr. Dylewski, who was instrumental in securing a$10 million gift from the late philanthropist L.Austin Weeks, explained that Mr. Weeks’ gratitudeled to the donation. The gift is supporting a center ofexcellence in electrophysiology at South MiamiHeart Center, which will study and treat abnormali-ties of the heart’s electrical system. The center ofexcellence grew out of the relationship between Mr.Weeks and his doctors, cardiologists George Vergara,M.D., and Dr. Dylewski.

Baptist and South Miami Hospital EmergencyCenter Expansions

Bigger, better emergency centers streamlinedfor the 21st century, featuring swift, high-tech careand state-of-the art technology, are under constructionor being planned at Baptist Hospital and SouthMiami Hospital. Construction on Baptist Hospital’smultimillion-dollar ER and hospital expansionbegan earlier this year and the opening is projectedfor 2008. South Miami Hospital is planning a majorexpansion and renovation of its emergency department.

Baptist Cardiac & Vascular InstituteHeart disease and stroke continue to be the

nation’s leading killers. For more than two decades,Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute has taken apioneering role in caring for people with healthproblems related to the heart and circulatory sys-tem. The Institute has built a neurointerventionalangiography suite to treat stroke and other neuro-logical conditions. This suite supports the StrokeProgram at Baptist Hospital’s Neuroscience Center.Support for the Institute may be designated in avariety of areas. Naming opportunities are available.

Baptist Children’s HospitalFamilies with children who are undergoing

treatment for cancer are devastated, both emotionallyand financially. A special fund provides support toneedy families to assist with housing, transportation,access to a child psychologist and other services.The fund also supports the camps, reunions andholiday events that are an important part of thechild’s (and the family’s) healing process. Variouslevels of giving are possible.

Doctors HospitalThe latest addition to the Baptist Health net-

work, Doctors Hospital has reintroduced itself asthe premier, not-for-profit hospital in Coral Gables.Doctors’ all-star roster of physicians includes specialists in sports medicine, orthopedics, neuro-surgery and gynecologic oncology. Mariners Hospital – The William E. ChasteenScholarship Fund

The William E. Chasteen Scholarship Fund wascreated in 2000 by Upper Keys residents Tom andDale Chasteen in memory of their father. A New Homestead HospitalThe “hospital of the future,” opening in early

2007, will bring the latest equipment and services— including high-speed, wireless Internet technology— to the growing south Miami-Dade community.Baptist Health is completing construction of the120-bed hospital and an adjacent medical officebuilding east of the Florida Turnpike on the northside of Campbell Drive. The 300,000-square-foot,$100-million-plus hospital will feature privatepatient rooms, an Emergency Center triple the sizeof the existing one, the Betty Jane France PediatricDepartment, called Speediatrics, and an urgent carecenter. As the end of the year approaches, many people reflect on their blessings and consider

their charitable giving priorities. A gift to BaptistHealth Foundation, a public charity,supports Baptist Health’s mission toprovide excellence in healthcareand serves to reinforce yourcommitment to making adifference in the communi-ty. You can fulfill yourcharitable goals in waysthat feature significant taxsavings.

There is no easier way toobtain a charitable deduction for 2006 — and sup-port Baptist Health Foundation at the same time —than by simply writing a check. Make sure your enve-lope is postmarked by Dec. 31, and it’s possible toeliminate income tax on up to 50 percent of your tax-able income. Excess charitable deductions can be car-ried forward for up to five years.

Gifts of appreciated securities or stock alsocan ease your tax burden. If you have owned

stock for more than one year, donating it to BaptistHealth Foundation offers you a two-fold tax saving.First, you avoid any capital gains tax on itsincreased value. Second, you receive a tax deduc-tion for its full fair market value on the date of thegift, up to 30 percent of your adjusted grossincome, with an additional five-year carry forward.

Charitable gift annuities or charitable remaindertrusts allow you to receive lifetime income whendonating to the Foundation. You can transfer cash orsecurities now and receive an immediate income taxdeduction and a guaranteed lifetime income. Thisincome can be paid to you and/or a loved one forlife, or a specified length of time, after which theassets would be distributed to Baptist HealthFoundation to benefit our hospitals.

You can contribute a life insurance policy by either naming Baptist

Health Foundation as theowner of the policy or simplyas the beneficiary. If you name theFoundation as owner and beneficiary,

in most cases you will be entitled to an income taxdeduction limited to the lower of the fair marketvalue of the policy or your cost basis in the contract.In addition, if you continue to pay premiums on apolicy that we own, you can deduct the premiumpayments.

The sale of a residence, vacation home, farm,vacant lot or other real estate holding that hasappreciated in value through the years would meana sizable capital gains tax. By making a year-endgift of this property to Baptist Health Foundation,you avoid the tax and, at the same time, realize acharitable deduction for the full fair market valueof the real estate. Italso is possible tomake a gift ofyour propertyto theFoundation sothat you andyour spouse can continue to use it foryour lifetimes — and still receive animmediate income tax deduction for a portion of itsfair market value.

Recently, President Bush signed into law newtax incentives for charitable gifts from

donors who are 70 1/2 or older. The PensionProtection Act of 2006 encourages financial supportof charitable organizations in the United States.Under the new law, you can use funds from yourIRA to make a lifetime charitable gift free of taxobligations. Prior to the law, you would have toreport any amount taken from your IRA as taxableincome, then take a charitable deduction for thegift, but only up to 50 percent of your adjustedgross income. Now these IRA gifts can be donatedsimply and without tax complications.
