1. Host a virtual event. Consider sponsoring a Giving Tuesday fundraiser or another online event at your law firm that would support the SC Bar Foundation. Harness the power of social media to encourage the next generation of givers to make a difference in South Carolina through the legal profession.

2. Celebrate generously. Consider a charitable birthday party or wedding that might include choosing charitable favors, purchasing charity gift cards for your special day helpers or creating a charity registry. The I Do Foundation has tips and ideas for making your special day have a lasting impact for others. Individuals have also used Facebook and other social media networks to suggest donations to a favorite philanthropy in lieu of gifts for a birthday or anniversary. Why not consider the Bar Foundation?

3. Share the joy. Introduce the Bar Foundation to a friend. Invite a colleague to lunch and bring along the Bar Foundation annual report. Sharing the inspiring stories in the annual report might just encourage someone else to make a difference in South Carolina

4. Practice gratitude while improving your health. Send a spontaneous thank you note to a Bar Foundation donor. Scientists are finding that people who practice gratitude have stronger immune systems and lower blood pressure, feel less lonely and isolated and report higher levels of positive emotions. Help your health while thanking others!

5. Start a dialogue. Make an appointment with a director of the Bar Foundation to learn more about the Foundation’s impact in your community. Take the opportunity to ask about the Foundation’s goals, challenges and accomplishments. You just might find yourself wanting to be a part of its mission.

Five Ways to Energize Your Charitable Giving in 2014By Abacus Planning Group

And Speaking of Energizing Your Giving…At last year’s gala, the Foundation held its first

ever billable hour auction. That’s right – a billable hour auction! Auctioneer Marie-Louise Ramsdale encouraged guests to pledge a certain number of billable hours in a live auction format. For the purposes of the live auction, one billable hour was equal to $100. The number of hours bid by an attorney represented the amount of money he or she agreed to donate to the Bar Foundation. The exciting result of the auction was that more than $22,000 was generated in 10 minutes!

So, we’re going to try it again. This year’s gala will only include a billable hour auction (no silent auction), so please plan to join in on the fun and pledge an hour or two in support of the grantees of the South Carolina Bar Foundation.

Greenville Grantee Gathering Draws More Than 100 AttorneysThe South Carolina Bar Foundation hosted its Greenville Grantee Gathering on Dec. 10, 2013 at the West End Community Development Center to showcase the work of three Upstate grantees – the SC YMCA Youth in Government Program, South Carolina Legal Services’ Greenville office and the Upstate Mediation Center.

More than 100 legal professionals joined the Bar Foundation for breakfast to hear how these three organizations were making a difference in the Upstate. Presenters included Greenville County Bar President Bill Clarke and attorney Tripp Atkins, who spoke about the importance of mediating for clients who cannot afford a mediator. Student Lorenzo Barbaris-Canonico from Riverside High School wowed attendees with his comment that being a part of YIG saved his life. SC Legal Services managing attorney Kimaka Nichols-Graham relayed the importance of the relationships between her organization and private attorneys.

Bev Carroll, Bar Foundation President, commented how the in-person meetings showcase the value of Foundation grantees in the community. “Our regional events give attorneys the chance to see how their support of the Foundation benefits organizations that reach so many people in their own backyards,” she said. “The life changing results for the clients served is beyond measure.”

The program also included a CLE presentation by Beth Padgett, assistant director of the South Carolina Bar’s Lawyers Helping Lawyers Program, on how attorneys can manage the stresses of the legal profession.

The Foundation would like to thank its table sponsors for making this event possible:

Sparkplugs? Menus? Asking for Money in THIS Economy?

The Foundation is grateful to the Sisters of Charity Foundation for their support in bringing Andy to South Carolina for this worthwhile meeting.

On Dec. 5, 2013, 25 nonprofit professionals learned how car parts and restaurant materials related to the real questions at hand – can we raise money in this economy and, if so, how can we get our boards mobilized to take the lead? Grantee representatives from the SC Bar Foundation and the Sisters of Charity Foundation came together for a fantastic session which reinvigorated and inspired participants to get back into the game. The full day workshop was led by seasoned nonprofit consultant, Andy Robinson. Andy has provided support and training to thousands of nonprofit staff and volunteer leaders in 47 states and across Canada. Andy’s initial connection with the SC Bar Foundation was made through speaking engagements at meetings of the National Conference of Bar Foundations and the National Association of IOLTA Programs.

Mark’s work in the community has received both statewide and national recognition. He was honored twice with the state’s highest award – the Order of the Palmetto. “I felt extremely honored to be awarded the Order of the Palmetto by Governor Edwards and later by Governor Beasley, who I had known since his college days growing up here in the Pee Dee,” Mark explained. He also received the Judge Hemphill Award from the SCDTAA, was named Compleat Lawyer of the Year by the USC School of Law and was honored with the Ralph King Anderson Award by the Florence County Bar. When he was presented with this award, Judge Anderson himself called Mark the “quintessential icon” of what it means to be a lawyer. In addition to these awards from within the state, Mark is listed in all published editions

of Best Lawyers in America.Mark currently serves as a member of the

USC board of trustees, Carolinas Hospital System board of trustees and the American Board of Trial Advocates national board of directors. He continues to serve as president and founder of the Florence Heritage Foundation and director of the Bank of Clarendon.

It has been said of Mark that “he has a long career of involvement with efforts to improve the quality of life and standard of living in Florence. His work has had an impact that Florence residents can see every day.”

While many people may know Mark for his work in law, they may not know that Mark was a star football player in high school. “When I was a senior, I was named the outstanding player on my

team and received offers to go to several small in-state colleges; however, I always wanted to go to Carolina,” he said. When Mark isn’t working, he can be found either on Pawley’s Island or following the USC Gamecocks.

Mark thanked his colleagues for this nomination, describing them as “mighty good friends.” His advice to young lawyers: “I was once told the following: ‘Work makes the dull bright, the bright brilliant, the brilliant steady.’ If you work hard and are prepared for your files and cases, you will be successful.”

Colleagues wishing to celebrate Mark’s award may do so by sending a tribute gift in his honor to the Foundation or by visiting www.scbarfoundation.org.
