Cover: Living in central Maine has given Dan Marquis access to all the varied and magnificent habitats and scenery that Maine has to offer; from the rocky coast with its picturesque fishing villages, to the inland lakes and mountains, to Maine’s famed North Woods. He is also passionate about photographing cityscapes around his hometowns of Lewiston and Auburn, particularly at dusk and dawn, in order to show its citizens the beauty that their towns possess.

This stunning shot was captured on a Sunday morning, when his plans of catching a good sunrise never came to fruition. Instead, the view lined up perfectly with the dawn sky, and the colors were spectacular!

Showcasing City Hall, Saints Peter and Paul Basilica, and the Dolard and Priscilla Gendron Franco Center, perhaps there is no image that captures the splendor and spirit of Lewiston better than Dawn Light over Lewiston. We are grateful to Dan Marquis for sharing his outstanding talent with each of us.

Today there are people in our community who struggle to feed their families. We are pleased that we are able to help in some small way by making a monthly contribution to the Food Pantry and by volunteering.”

Jim and Rita Cassidy’s commitment to community health has led them to support and serve for almost 15 years at the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center’s Food Pantry. Each month over 2,500 people enjoy fresh produce and groceries, thanks to this robust program. Other Nutrition Center initiatives include hands-on cooking classes, community gardens, school-based programs, job training programs for teens, and year-round farmers’ markets.

Victoria Langelier and her family made a gift in memory of her father, Bruce Hewison, to benefit St. Mary’s cancer and infusion patients.

Profile“After being given no hope by other doctors in the state, I convinced my dad to come to St. Mary’s. We were met with such kindness and respect by the staff at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. We were able to have two years with my father that no one could have given us. The staff at St. Mary’s was nothing short of amazing and always made us feel like we were part of their family. Chris and Susan Scales“Mom and Dad had deep ties to the LA community.

Both spent time at St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion

recovering from illnesses, and we were impressed

with the care and attention they received. Both

enjoyed camping and being outdoors, surrounded

by nature’s sounds and smells. During Mom’s

last years, she spent hours sitting by her window

joyfully watching birds eat at her feeders. We

immediately thought of d’Youville and are

delighted to support their holistic mission by

creating an outdoor space where patients and

staff can enjoy a daily nature break.”

Chris and Susan Scales of Katy, Texas, gave a gift to enhance the outdoor patio area behind St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion, in memory of his parents, June and Damon Scales. Their wish was to create a space of enduring value that would bring peace and comfort to patients, residents and their families.

The Marguerite d’Youville Fund for the NeedyThe Marguerite d’Youville Fund for the Needy was founded in 1994 by St. Mary’s staff as an ongoing source of funds to help those in need with basic necessities such as food, medications, and transportation. In 1737, Marie-Marguerite d’Youville and her son converted their home into a dwelling for the poor and elderly. Soon, other like-minded women joined them, and in 1755, these women were formally recognized as Les Soeurs Grises or the Grey Nuns. In 1878, the sisters were asked to come to Lewiston, Maine, to begin a French-speaking school, and eventually, a hospital. In 1889, the Sisters of Charity founded the first Catholic hospital in Maine, which we know today as St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

On average, this fund disburses about $25,000 per year and helps over 100 people. We have come to realize it is just as important to pay attention to the social determinants of health, such as housing, food, and poverty, as it is to providing care in the hospital or physician practice. This fund enables us to help people stay in their homes – or find a home – provide food for a newborn and her mother, or pay for lifesaving medications until another source of funding is in place.
