  • JANUARY ROSARY RALLY

Join Holy Innocents Parish on Saturday, January 16 in praying the Holy Rosary publicly at 12 noon in front of Macy’s on Broadway between 34th and 35th Streets for the intentions of the respect for all human life, the traditional family, and our nation, asking Him to save America through the Rosary of His Most Holy Mother and through the intercession of St. Joseph. In The Secret of the Rosary, Saint Louis de Montfort said: “Public prayer is far more powerful than private prayer to appease the anger of God and call down His mercy, and Holy Mother Church, guided by the Holy Ghost, has always advo-cated public prayer in times of public tragedy and suffering.” Hope to see you there!!

ACT OF SUBMISSION TO THE WILL OF GOD

My Lord and my God, even now, I most willingly and cheerfully accept whatever form of death Thou wilt be pleased to send me, with all its anguish, sorrow, and pain.

In your charity, please pray for the happy repose of the soul of our parishioner Edward Hawkins who died on December 30 and was buried following a Solemn High Requiem Mass on Saturday, Janu-ary 9 from St. Cecilia's in Green-

point, Brooklyn. May he rest in eternal peace!

    CONTINUATION ON-LINE 54-DAY ROSARY NOVENA

Holy Innocents will continue with the 54-day Rosary Novena indefi-nitely. It will be an on-going de-votion to Our Lady of Pompeii. 5 decades of the Rosary will be prayed in Holy Innocents Church at the usual daily times.

15-decades of the Rosary will be prayed via Zoom Meetings at 7:00 p.m. each evening. The log-in information for the on-line Rosary remains the same: What you need to join Zoom Meeting on computer: https://zoom.us/j/5182168942 Meeting ID: 518 216 8942 Password: 5gFd8U One tap mobile +19294362866,,5182168942# US (New York) +13017158592,,5182168942# US (Germantown)

    YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH

Pope Francis announced a special year dedicated to St. Joseph starting from 8 December 2020 until 8 December 2021, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of St. Joseph as the Patron of the Universal Church. During this period, the faithful will have the oppor-tunity to commit themselves with prayer and good works, to obtain, with the help of St. Joseph, head of the heavenly Family of Nazareth, comfort and relief from the serious human and social tribulations that besiege the contemporary world today. The plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharis-tic Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions) to Christians who, with a spirit detached from any sin, par-ticipate in the Year of St. Joseph on these occasions and manners indicated by the Apostolic Penitentiary: - The plenary indulgence is granted to those who will meditate for at least 30 minutes on the Lord’s Prayer, or take part in a Spiritual Retreat of at least one day that includes a meditation on St. Joseph. “St. Joseph, an authentic man of faith, invites us”, the decree reads, “to rediscover our filial relationship with the Father, to renew fidelity to prayer, to listen and cor-respond with profound discernment to God’s will.” - The indulgence can also be obtained by those who, following St. Joseph’s example, will perform a spiritu-al or corporal work of mercy. St. Joseph “encourages us to rediscover the value of silence, prudence and loyalty in carrying out our duties,” the decree notes. - The recitation of the Holy Rosary in families and among engaged couples is another way of obtaining indulgences, in order that “all Christian families may be stimulated to recreate the same atmosphere of in-timate communion, love and prayer that was in the Holy Family.” - Everyone who entrusts their daily activity to the protection of St. Joseph, and every faithful who in-vokes the intercession of St. Joseph so that those seeking work can find dignifying work can also obtain the plenary indulgence. On 1 May 1955, Pope Pius XII instituted the feast of St. Joseph “with the intent that the dignity of work be recognized by all, and that it inspires social life and laws, based on the fair distribu-tion of rights and duties.” - The plenary indulgence is also granted to the faithful who will recite the Litany to St. Joseph (for the Latin tradition), or the Akathistos to St. Joseph (for the Byzan-tine tradition), or any other prayer to St. Joseph proper to the other liturgical traditions, for the persecuted Church ad intra and ad extra, and for the relief of all Christians suffering all forms of persecution.

    MARRIAGE BANNS

III. Dawid P. Szmigielski & Tiffany A. Vassilatos

    QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“In an earthquake a poor woman was buried under the ruins of a house which was overthrown. A

priest had the stones and the rubbish cleared away, and under them found the mother with her children in her arms, alive and uninjured. On being asked what devotion she had practiced, she replied that

she never omitted saying the Rosary and visiting the altar of our Blessed Lady.

    - St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787)

"May Christian Nations seek the protection of the Mother of God with an ardor that grows greater every day! May they cling more and more to the practice of the Holy Rosary not only as a remedy for their misfortunes but as the very badge of Christian pie-ty! The Rosary is the protection of the Mother of God against the enemies of the Catholic Church. To Mary, we must fly. We wish to see it offered more widely in all places and at all times! The great Virgin of the Rosary is the most potent Help of Christians." - Pope Leo XIII

"ONE DAY, THROUGH THE ROSARY AND THE SCAPULAR, I WILL SAVE THE WORLD!"

    - Mother of God to Saint Dominic

A PRAYER FOR THE CONVERSION OF AMERICA O Mary, Mother of mercy and Refuge of sinners, we beseech thee, be pleased to look with pitiful eyes upon poor heretics and schismatics. Thou who art the Seat of Wisdom, en-lighten the minds that are miserably enfolded in the darkness of ignorance and

sin, that they may clearly know that the Holy Cath-olic and Apostolic Roman Church is the one true Church of Jesus Christ, outside of which neither holiness nor salvation can be found. Finish the work of their conversion by obtaining for them the grace to accept all the truths of our Holy Faith, and to submit themselves to the supreme Roman Pontiff, the Vicar of Jesus Christ on earth; that so, being united with us in the sweet chains of divine charity, there may soon be only one fold under the same one shepherd; and may we all, O glorious Virgin, sing forever with exultation: Rejoice, O Virgin Mary, thou only hast destroyed all heresies in the whole world. Amen. Hail Mary, three times, once for North America, once for Central America and once for South America.

An Indulgence of 500 days (Raccolta, no. 579)

  • QUOTE ON THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD

“Dearly Beloved, each word and deed of Our Saviour Jesus Christ

is for us a lesson in virtue and piety. For this end also did He assumed our nature,

so that every man and every woman, contemplating as in a picture the practice of all virtue

and piety, might strive with all their hearts to imitate

His example. For this He bore our body, so that as far as we could,

we might repeat within us, the manner of His life. And so, therefore, when you hear mention of some

word or deed of His, take care not to receive it simply as something that

incidentally happened but raise your mind upwards towards the sublimity of

what He is teaching and strive to see what has been mystically handed

    down to us”

St Basil the Great (329-379) Father & Doctor of the Church

ST. PAUL THE FIRST HERMIT - January 15

Paul of Thebes, commonly known as Paul, the First Hermit or Paul the Anchorite, is regarded as the first Christian hermit, who was claimed to have lived alone in the de-sert of Egypt from the age of sixteen to the age of one hundred and thir-teen years old. Paul and his married sister lost their parents. In order to obtain Paul's inheritance, his brother-in-law sought to betray him to the persecutors. Paul fled to the Theban desert as a young man during the persecu-tion of Decius and Valerianus around AD 250. The Life of Saint Paul the First Hermit was composed in Latin by Saint Jerome, probably in 375–376. Paul of Thebes was born around 227 in the Thebaid of Egypt. He lived in the mountains of this desert in a cave near a clear spring and a palm tree, the leaves of which provided him with clothing and the fruit of which pro-vided him with his only source of food until he was 43 years old, when a raven started bringing him half a loaf of bread daily. He would remain in that cave for the rest of his life, almost a hundred years. Father Anthony (the Father of Monasticism) returned to his monastery taking with him the robe woven with palm leaf. He honored the robe so much that he only wore it twice a year: at the Feast of Easter, and at the Pentecost. Paul of Thebes is known to posterity because around the year 342, Anthony the Great was told in a dream about the older hermit's existence, and went to find him. Jerome related that Anthony the Great and Paul met when the latter was aged 113. They conversed with each other for one day and one night. The Synaxarium shows each saint inviting the other to bless and break the bread, as a token of hon-or. Paul held one side, putting the other side into the hands of Father Anthony, and soon the bread broke through the middle and each took his part. When An-thony next visited him, Paul was dead. Anthony clothed him in a tunic which was a present from Athanasius of Alexandria and buried him, with two lions helping to dig the grave. Monastery of Saint Paul the Anchorite (Deir Anba Bola) is traditionally believed to be on the site of the cave where Paul lived and where his remains are kept. The monastery is located in the eastern desert mountains of Egypt near the Red Sea. The Cave Church of St. Paul marks the spot where Anthony, "the Father of Monasticism", and Paul, "the First Hermit", are be-lieved to have met. The Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit (Pauline Fa-thers & Brothers) was founded in Hungary in his honor in the 13th century. He is usually represented with a palm tree, two lions and a raven.

The Celebration of Mass A Study of the Rubrics of the Roman Missal

    by Rev. J. B. O’Connell

The author of several liturgically-related works, J.B. O Connell is not-ed for his ability to clearly explain the complex ceremonial workings of the Roman Rite, particularly for the celebration of Mass by the priest. This book is the indispensable rubri-cal resource for the traditional Ro-man Liturgy. This book is valued by

clergy and laity alike, not only for its concise han-dling of the general rubrics, but also for its chap-ters that briefly describe the history of the devel-opment of the traditional Roman Mass, liturgical law, the proper understanding of the force of cus-tom, the importance of the decisions made by the Sacred Congregation of Rites and the opinions of fellow rubricians. O Connell s last revision made for the Roman Mass was printed in 1964 after a span of nearly 10 years from his last edition, mak-ing it one of the few rubrical books completely in conformity with the new code of rubrics imple-mented in 1960 that comprise the 1962 edition of the Missale Romanum. Fully indexed and beautifully hardbound in bright red with gold embossing on the cover and spine. This is a must for any priest offer-ing Mass according to the 1962 Missal of the Church' s sacred liturgy.

Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here.

We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite

you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.

    AN ANCIENT BAPTISTERY

One of the most ancient and enduring sites for baptism in Rome is the church of San Giovanni in Fonte. This church is in fact a baptistery, and houses the font for the Lateran Basilica, the cathe-dral of Rome. The Emperor Constantine sponsored its construction in the year 315, and it is therefore the oldest baptistery in the world. It is the model for nearly all later baptisteries, including perhaps the font in your own parish church. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
