At Founders4Schools, we continue on our mission to improve the ease with which young people are prepared for the future of work.

This year, our fourth since developing the charity out of SVC2UK , we’ve announced new features, partnerships and the spin-out of our award-winning work experience and internship placement service into an independent company called Workfinder.

The academic year 2018-2019 has been a momentous one for Founders4Schools. We’ve now facilitated over one million student-employer encounters UK-wide, connecting well over 300,000 young people with role models from the world of work to help them to build their own paths to success. From Aberdeen to Truro, Liverpool to Broadstairs, Founders4Schools gives educators access to local volunteers and the ability to create encounters in less than four minutes. It’s an amazing tool which significantly improves the productivity of educators in their quest to prepare young people for their lives ahead.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Founders4Schools’ partners, advisors, trustees and staff for working together to achieve these results: it’s a privilege to work with you.

Who we are:

Founders4Schools is an award winning educational-tech charity working towards a vision where children and young people are given the best start in life, no matter their background. We connect children and young people with inspirational role models to improve their aspirations, fulfil their potential and prepare them for the rapidly changing world of work.

Founders4Schools was founded in 2011 by serial entrepreneur and angel investor, Sherry Coutu CBE. Working within the tech sector, Sherry recognised a burning need to prepare children and young people for the ever-changing workplace - and saw an opportunity to use the latest technology to level the playing field and improve social mobility. In partnership with LinkedIn, Edubase and Duedil, we created our tech platform and became a registered charity in 2015, dedicated to improving the life chances of children and young people across the country.

What we do:

We have created a simple, free-to-use digital platform which enables educators across the UK to connect with business leaders and professionals in their local community. In as little as four minutes, educators from primary schools, secondary schools and colleges can organise a programme of student-employer encounters for their students. These include careers fairs, mentoring sessions, interview practice and career talks, which help to expand young people’s horizons and put them on the path to a brighter future. We use smart technology to make careers education easy. We work with thousands of volunteer business leaders drawn from companies large and small - from Lloyds Banking Group and Virgin Atlantic, through to small enterprises such as Unruly and Mind Candy. This allows educators to a diverse range of individuals, who they feel will inspire their students the most.

I have been in my post as Director of Fundraising at Founders4Schools for three months now and am very excited about the opportunities ahead.

Our vision is to inspire children and young people, whatever their background, to fulfil their potential and to prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow. Founders4Schools is unique; we take the hard work out of organising good career guidance for educators and we provide an easy way for companies to find a flexible and accessible way for their employees to volunteer and make a difference.

We’ve already facilitated over 1 million student-employer encounters and we’re on track to have our best year yet.

We’re immensely grateful for the generous grants and donations that we receive in order to do our work, in particular the Education Evolution Trust for our partnership with Villiers Park and DYW, the Scottish Government and the Hunter Foundation for their support in Scotland. Our heartfelt thanks go towards all of our funders for their ongoing support over the past year.

Looking ahead, we are so delighted to have partnered with 100 Women in Finance to kick-start our exciting Maths4Girls project (more on page 20) and JPMorgan to support our Coalition for Careers Education project in which we will be creating an interactive online training course to promote the benefits of digital career tools to teachers. We can’t wait to get started.

We’re always on the lookout for new partners and opportunities. If you would like to join the likes of Amazon Web Services, Barclays and the CBI to name but a few, then please get in touch to see how we can develop a partnership that both works for your business and makes a transformational difference to the lives of disadvantaged young people across the country.

To date we have facilitated over one million student-employer encounters UK-wide, supporting over 300,000 young people in understanding more about the world of work.

We have helped inspire 42% more children and young people than last year.

Since 2013, our award-winning digital platform has enabled educators all over the country to connect with business leaders and professionals employed in their communities. This year, we have achieved the remarkable milestone of facilitating one million student-employer encounters.

This means that we have supported and inspired over 300,000 individual students and have delivered classroom-based encounters in over 60% of the local authorities in England and Scotland.

Our year in numbersOur outcomes

In May 2019, we surveyed 300 teachers:

29,000 business leaders are signed up and ready to volunteer.

In the last year, we have worked with

85,099 children and young people all over the UK, an increase of 42% from last year.

Educators are booking more encounters, more often. In 2018/2019, we facilitated

378,106 student-employer encounters.

We work towards three main outcomes:

To tackle inequality by providing equal access to the world of work

To support young people by connecting what they learn with the world of work

To provide young people with the confidence to allow them to take the next steps in finding their future roles in the workplace

“I am one of the very few female Managing Directors in the largely male-dominated technology industry and therefore a strong advocate of diversity. Promoting diversity in our sector needs to start from an early age. It was really great to have an opportunity to hopefully inspire the girls I met at the careers fair to consider technology as one of their options.”

UN Global Sustainable Development Goals

Our outcomes are strongly aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) which aim to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.

SDG 8: Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all

Our services equip young people with the skills they need for the jobs of the future, improves their life chances and promotes economic growth.

SDG 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries by tackling the underlying reasons why opportunities diverge

We aim to tackle inequality by providing every young person, no matter their background, with opportunities to raise their aspirations and fulfil their potential. Over the next 12 months, we are prioritising our resources to ensure we are targeting the most disadvantaged areas to improve youth employability.

In August 2018, Baldragon Academy in Dundee used the Founders4Schools’s digital platform for the first time to plan a careers event for over fifty pupils. They wanted to motivate them to think more about the world of work and learn about the different paths to their chosen career.

Phil Ingham, Co-Founder at Brannies Ties, Shona Young, CEO at Nutscene, and Steve Watt, CIO of the University of St Andrews came along to share their career stories, including the challenges and successes they experienced along the way.

It was a real eye-opener for the pupils, who in one easy-to-plan session learnt about a variety of options they may not have previously considered.

With research showing that parental income is still the biggest indicator of achievement at school and earning power later in life, we know that good career guidance is vital for all children and young people.

Our contribution to solving this problem is to connect students with professionals who can open their minds to new possibilities and have a lasting impact on their future employability. Indeed, research shows that following four encounters with business leaders or professionals, the likelihood of pupils becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training) is reduced by 86%. Furthermore, of the billion young people

entering the workforce in the next decade, only four in ten will be working in jobs that currently exist. There is an urgent need to inspire young people and prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow.

Our services enable students to make better informed subject and career choices. Our events demonstrate the range of careers they can choose from and give them better clarity on the steps needed to achieve success. We want to improve social mobility, inclusivity and access to careers, levelling the playing field for those children and young people who need us most.

We also have a significant impact on a school’s ability to achieve their Gatsby Benchmarks, a framework of eight guidelines that define the best careers provision in schools and colleges.

“This was the first F4S encounter in Dundee. I was delighted with how it went. The speakers were engaging and informative and the pupils gained a lot from their input.”

“It was my great pleasure to support Founders4Schools with their role model event at Hanson Academy, Bradford. The children seemed genuinely engaged with the content of the event, and with my story and advice that I gave them. In England, careers guidance has in the past been patchy, not always reaching those most in need. Against this background, the Gatsby Foundation created a framework of eight guidelines that define the best careers provision for schools and colleges.

94% of Careers Leaders believe that the Gatsby Benchmarks have helped improve career guidance.

Careers and Enterprise Company, Career Leaders Report

To ensure our student-employer encounters have a lasting impact, Founders4Schools have designed our service based on these eight benchmarks.

“The partnership between Founders4Schools and the Careers & Enterprise Company is a really important one for us. Their platform gives educators and advisers up and down the country a simple way to engage meaningfully with employers local to them, who are then able to talk to their young people about the world of work. We’ve also linked up the F4S platform with our tracker tool, so teachers can easily see how these encounters are helping them work towards the Gatsby Benchmarks as well. The careers education landscape is a rich ecosystem, and the relationship between our organisations is a crucial part of that.”

John Yarham, Deputy CEO

The Careers & Enterprise Company

Helping schools to make progress towards their Gatsby Benchmarks

Using our clever digital platform, Founders4Schools is able to take into consideration the individual needs of educators and students. This means we can guide them towards encounter types and potential speakers to ensure they have the greatest impact.

We enable educators to connect with a wide range of employers and employees who can speak to young people about their career path. By providing a diverse perspective on how they have approached their careers, students will be able to understand the different academic and vocational routes that are available to them.

Founders4Schools enables educators to book workplace visits for their students with ease. Educators can simply request a workplace visit and we then contact local, high growth, business to host.

Our service connects children and young people directly with business leaders from their local communities. Our digital platform recommends a varied programme of careers encounters including career talks, speed mentoring, enterprise activities and workplace visits, all of which can be booked instantly through our platform.

We encourage all educators to bring their subject to life with Student-Employer-Encounters. Our machine learning algorithms remember educator preferences, making it even easier for educators to filter local speakers based on their curriculum needs.

With our advanced filtering system, we put control of the student-employer encounter firmly in the hands of the educator, ensuring they can select speakers who are best suited to inspire their students. Educators can filter by industry, gender, race, company revenue and growth.

We enable educators to discover the fastest growing companies and industries in their local communities by simply entering their postcode. All Founders4Schools speakers hold influential positions at companies which have an annual turnover of over £100,000.

Our digital platform enables time-poor educators to create a structured careers programme quickly and simply. We provide educators with clear guidance on the types of events they can book and, using smart algorithms, make recommendations on which speakers and volunteers will have the most impact.

Case study - Embedding careers education into the curriculum - Torriano Primary School, Camden, London

Torriano is a primary school located in the inner London borough of Camden, an area that has above-average rates of unemployment and where many children have parents who don’t work.

The school has set out to break down what it describes as a “dependency model” and to broaden pupils’ horizons. Originally, careers education was delivered through a stand-alone careers week but it is now much more embedded in the curriculum, helping to bring ‘real life’ context to the discussion.

In April 2019, in partnership with LKMco, an education and youth think and action tank, we published an innovative report, Making Careers Education Age Appropriate, our contribution to the debate on careers education. In it, we argued that careers guidance should start in pre-school and continue, with age-appropriate activities, until after they complete higher education.

Informed by an extensive literature review and influencer panels with over forty employers and practitioners, we explored encounters involving role-play, ‘job corners’ and linking classroom learning to the outside world to map education, training and career-pathway decision-making and understanding at each age of education.

“I feel quite inspired to see these people doing amazing jobs …You’re just like, ‘wow’, it’s amazing…. I think it’s important that we learn about a varied selection of jobs as well, not just the traditional ones like policeman, lawyers, baker, architect”.

Their approach is based on the following three elements:

Drawing on external support: Staff at Torriano have

worked with a number of advisers from other

organisations including Founders4Schools

and TeamLondon to help identify business

links and maximise opportunities in their

local area.

Progression: Career activities are

linked to the school’s over-arching theme

for any given term and delivery is tailored to ensure it is age-

appropriate.

Planning: Leaders at Torriano

ensure that they involve educators at an early stage of planning career weeks or events to ensure that there is a clear outcome to all

activities.

We also recommend getting parents involved at every stage and advocate strongly that schools and colleges nominate a Governor or Trustee to take responsibility for careers education to ensure it supports pupils’ academic, social and personal development.

We believe age-appropriate careers education should complement rather than distract from other learning, and, crucially, will help to prevent the formation of unhelpful stereotypes about work and careers (typically involving gender, class, race, disability and ethnicity).

Born in 1815, Ada Lovelace collaborated with Charles Babbage on a general purpose computing machine, the Analytical Engine. Each year, events are held around the world to celebrate the achievements of women working in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), and encourage girls to consider STEM careers.

On October 9th 2018, we held an Ada Lovelace schools’ event at the Francis Crick Institute, attended by two hundred students with a range of inspiring women entrepreneurs, including Sarah Wood, former CEO and Co-Founder of Unruly and Megan Smith, former CTO of the United States, serving under President Obama, among many other brilliant speakers.

Founders4Schools, Teens in AI and CognitionX ran a Hackathon to inspire young people aged between 11 and 18 with Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the potential to reach UN Sustainable Development Goals. The aim was to encourage young people to pursue studies in computing and technology, and to promote diversity in this ever-growing field. Sixteen finalists took part in a competitively fought event during London Tech Week.

We were honoured to have been chosen as Charity of the Year for London Tech Week for using innovation and technology to raise the aspirations of children and young people. This endorsement provided fantastic exposure and will enable us to increase our service across the UK to those who need us the most.

At the London Stock Exchange on 8th March 2019, we heard from inspirational women leaders who drew on their own experiences to provide insights and guidance on scaling a business. We also launched our fourth annual publication The Fastest-Growing Women-Led Businesses Driving the UK Economy, 2019, which maps the performance of women-led business in the UK. It clearly shows how women are in the driving seat of high-growth, dynamic businesses in every corner of the nation.

DYW is the Scottish Government’s national strategy for strengthening links between business and educators with the overall aim of reducing youth employment by 40% by 2021.

In 2016, Founders4Schools were invited by the Hunter Foundation to bring our services to Scotland and have been delighted with our progress so far.

Since we began operating in Scotland, we have facilitated nearly 80,000 student-employer encounters and placed over 560 volunteers into classrooms, reaching nearly 40,000 children and young people.

We have seen a continued growth in activity in Scotland, particularly in our partnerships in Dundee, Glasgow, West Lothian and Edinburgh.

“It just blew my mind thinking that if young people meet Founders then their career path can take a more positive route. And I just simply said why is it not happening in Scotland? Scotland invented the modern world, and I want to see us do it all over again. The way you do that is by inspiring young people to believe in themselves - and the rest takes care of itself.”

The Skills Builder Partnership is another important way in which educators can trust our encounters – because they build on the best learning and expertise.

The partnership brings together schools and colleges, employers and youth organisations all using the Skills Builder Framework to develop the eight essential skills children and young people need to succeed. The Framework takes each of the eight skills and breaks them down into teachable and learnable chunks – applying from the age of three through to adulthood.

“We’ve been pleased that Founders4Schools have been a key member in the Skills Builder Partnership over the past year. Together, we’ve been doing more to ensure that every child and young person is not only getting the insights and understanding of the working world to make decisions - but is also building the essential skills to succeed. Through the brilliant workshops that Founders4Schools facilitates, students can be meaningfully supported to practice and hone their essential skills like teamwork, presenting and aiming high.”

Villiers Park PartnershipOver the past year and a half, Founders4Schools has partnered with Villiers Park Educational Trust to help improve the aspirations and employability of the schools they work with. Villiers Park is a national social mobility charity committed to improving equality in education and careers across the UK.

Through this exciting project, we have worked with 51 schools and over 600 young people that are supported by Villiers Park and their INVOLVE programme to:

• Help teachers achieve 4 student-employer encounters per pupil

• Provide work experience guidance to students who need it the most through Workfinder

We are very grateful to the support of the Evolution Education Trust for their support with this project.

“There is no greater honour than to lead Workfinder into its next chapter of accelerating the ease with which young people are prepared for the future of work. We will do this with a single-minded focus on delivering for customers and partners - and with full control over our own destiny.

“Workfinder innovates at the core of a historic shift. Enterprises need to attract great people to achieve their strategic ambitions and we’re able to provide them with the widest possible pool of talent, using agile, enterprise-grade technology solutions. We have a firm foundation with our community, customers, partners and shareholders – all of whom have been the bedrock of Workfinder’s success and trust in our unrivalled ability to deliver value for them.”

Since March 2019, we have undertaken an extensive review of Founders4Schools’ operations and approach to ensure we are better able to target those children and young people most in need of our services.

As a result, we have introduced a place-based approach, which is based on our successful pilot in Scotland over the past two years.

Our focus will be local authorities where indicators show the most urgent need for F4S’s services, these indicators being:

% of students eligible for free school meals (FSM)

% completing a Level 3 qualification

% aged 16-25 who are NEET (not in employment, education or training)

with an overlay of the Social Mobility Index to select the local communities and schools where we can make the greatest impact.

To implement this approach, we will be appointing Regional Engagement Managers who will be able to provide specialist support and in-depth knowledge based on experience of working with educators and business leaders within these areas.

Maths4Girls: Investing in the next generation

Our plans for the year ahead

This is important because in 2018, examination statistics showed that girls outperformed boys in maths at primary school, but represented just:

39% 28%

of Maths A-level students

of Further Maths A-level students

Thank you to our supporters

Maths4Girls is an exciting new programme for the UK. Supported by the global network, 100 Women in Finance (100WF), this project aims aims to address the low levels of girls taking maths beyond GCSEs. A six-month pilot programme went live in July 2019, prior to a national rollout.

The programme will align with 100WF’s 2019 global philanthropic theme: Investing in the Next Generation, with the aim of increasing the confidence of 11-14 year-old girls in maths. Ultimately, we want to encourage more girls to take maths beyond GCSE and into university, by connecting them with 100WF members and other trailblazing female volunteers. In this way, we will balance the representation of women in industries such as financial services.

We will begin by engaging girls across London schools from September, having trained our volunteer community. Our platform will enable educators to easily identify and make requests to volunteers from 100WF to visit their schools.

Following the pilot, we aim to roll out the programme across the UK, focusing particularly on regions with the lowest female transition rate from GCSE to A-level Maths.

We would like to thank all our Partners for their ongoing support and look forward to working with you closely over the next year. To find out more about our Partners, please visit www.founders4schools.org.uk/partners.

Thank you to all of our funders for their generosity. We are immensely grateful for your on-going support.

Our trustees:We would like to thank all of the trustees of Founders4Schools. It is through their expertise, counsel and energy that we have been able to inspire so many children and young people. We are immensely grateful for their support.

Since registering as a charity in 2015, we have consistently increased our income to help reach more children and young people to help prepare them for the rapidly changing world of work.

While we are introducing a subscription model for business partners and local authorities, we predict the majority of our funding will be from voluntary income streams.
