MINISTRIES TO YOUTH: Religious Education classes for grades Preschool–Gr. 8 are held on Sunday mornings from 9:20–10:40am (Sept.–early May) in the Education Center. High School Youth meets for MIC Nights on Sundays after the 5:30pm Mass from 6:30-8:30pm.

From Father Stephen: Why I am grateful for my Catholic School education The above-listed phrase is a fairly typical topic for a Catholic

Schools Week essay. In fact, next weekend, at least a couple of

the Masses, we will have the opportunity to hear from one of

the current students of St. Mary School. In my view, no testi-

mony surpasses that of someone currently attending. I would

simply like to share with you, a snippet of my experience of

Catholic education “back in the day.”

I attended St. Jude Grade School and Lansdale Catholic High

School (both in Pennsylvania). All five of my siblings had

attended the former; the latter marked a variance within the

family (they attended a different Catholic high school). By this

point, my parents could no longer afford to send me, on their

own. A generous aunt and uncle stepped forward to close the

gap.

While it was certainly my desire to attend Catholic school, I

cannot tell you that my school days were always totally joyful;

I was almost painfully shy and didn’t mix easily. I cannot tell

you that the Catholic schools I attended were absolutely bully-

free; my freshman year was one that led me to ask, “What do I

have to do to avoid coming back here?”

Nevertheless, I am so thankful that within those campuses,

there were exemplary teachers — a mix of priests, vowed reli-

gious and lay— who consistently witnessed to me of the differ-

ence that manifests when principles of Faith and ethics are able

openly to be interwoven into the lessons of various subjects.

Even though we did not always perfectly practice the Faith, the

standards of Christ were kept before our eyes and minds. I was

able to look up at a crucifix in the classroom, and this gave me

comfort. I was able to stop by a chapel, for at least a moment

during my lunch period. And, I had loving parents who lived

the Faith at home!

Here is a prayer that I hope you will join me in praying:

Almighty Father,

You sent forth your Son as a beacon of hope for all people.

As Teacher, he has given us the prime example of the im-

portance of education. As disciples, we look to him for inspira-

tion and strength. Thank you for the many sisters, brothers,

priests, and laypeople who, over many generations, have dedi-

cated their lives in service to our Catholic schools.

Thank you for the teachers and administrators who sustain our

schools today. Thank you for the parents who have given sup-

port and witness to the importance of Catholic education in

their daily lives. Thank you for the students who work hard to

further their education. Bless St. Mary Parish School and the

many people who advance our mission. May our building be a

home for those who seek to grow in faith, knowledge, and ser-

vice of others. May our community always support one anoth-

er and exhibit hospitality to newcomers. Fill our minds with

knowledge and wisdom. May our understanding of the world

help us to grow in appreciation for it. Fill our hearts with

gladness. May we always turn to you in times of need.

Fill our hands with the tools we need to serve others.

May we show them your unceasing love through our actions.

Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, pray for us. Amen.

In the News: St. Mary School CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK!!!

Saying Good-Bye to Special School Friends

Saint Mary School students said “good-bye” to the Augusto-Schuchovski family last week. After spending the past 5 months, these 4th, 6th, and 8th graders headed back to their home in Curitiba, Brazil and to their school, Nossa Senhor de Sion. While here, they tried Starburst, Skittles, and Milky Ways for the first time! It has been a joy and a blessing to have this family as a part of our school. Their smiles and posi-tive energy will be missed. The boys were looking forward to having their favorite food again, called Feijoada, which is a bean and beef stew, driving their grandfather’s boat, and going to their favorite restaurant, located on the coast, called Zinho. We wished them safe travels to where family and friends had planned a party to celebrate their return.

Our Bodies are Our Temples A huge THANK YOU shout out to our classroom aide, Mrs. Hammond, for leading 2nd and 3rd grade students in relaxation exercises to stretch and lengthen their bod-ies.

After learning about Martin Luther King Jr., our 3rd grad-ers were inspired to start thinking about our own dreams. They brainstormed, made a rough draft, and produced a final copy to be hung up in the hallway.

The Mercy Garden Planned for St. Mary’s Grounds

A garden reminding us of the seven Corporal Works of Mercy is planned for the grounds of St. Mary Parish in front of the St. Mary School building. Donations to-wards the Mercy Garden are welcome!

Donations of $50 or more will be acknowledged on a plaque in the garden. Donation forms are available in the church office.

Thanks to all for supporting this effort, the Eagle Scout project of Mark Wood.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

The recently-formed Prayer Shawl Ministry has been very busy since its start in October. To date, thirty-three shawls or lap robes have been distributed to individuals in a hospital, nursing home, home confinement and Mary’s Tears, along with seven fleece blankets to the Gabriel Project.

With such a great number of people needing to feel God’s comfort and love through this ministry, won’t you consider joining us?

Gatherings take place on the 1st & 3rd Mondays of the month from 1-3 pm in the Parish Hall and on the 1st Monday of the month from 6-8 pm in the School Library.

Creating at home and praying for recipients of the shawls are greatly appreciated, as are donations of yarn. Please leave any donations in the “YARN” bin in the parish hall. For additional information, please call Cathy at 440-476-2015.
