Paul’s Church
Patron Saint of our Diocese Saint Brigid of Kildare
Brigid of Kildare is one of the three patrons of the Irish Church with Patrick and Columcille (or Columba of Iona). She was one of the first people to accept the Christian faith, having been baptised, according to tradition, by St. Patrick. Brigid’s memory has endured among the people of Ireland. Once of the tangible links is her cross which according to an old story she wove at the death-bed of either her father or a pagan chief, who upon hearing
what the cross meant, asked to be baptised. The story goes: A pagan chieftain from the neighbourhood of Kildare was dying. Christians in his household sent for Brigid to talk to him about Christ. When she arrived the chieftain was raving. As it was impossible to instruct this delirious man, hopes for this conversion seemed doubtful. Brigid sat down at his bedside and began consoling him. As was customary, the dirt floor was strewn with rushes both for warmth and cleanliness. Brigid stooped down and started to weave them into a cross fastening the points together. The sick man asked what she was doing. She began to explain the cross, and as she talked his delirium quietened and he questioned her with growing interest. Through her weaving, he came to faith and was baptised at the point of death. It is a legend but says something about this extraordinary woman. Her mother was one of several concubines but Brigid seems to have been a favourite of her father, something that is still done in parts of Africa today when a pagan chief donates a gift of land on the conversion of a son or daughter. Brigid founded a community of women, and the tradition says that she also ruled a community of monks in a an adjoining monastery in Kildare. St. Brigid’s Cross is still woven today and placed in houses as a reminder of the power of the main symbol of Christianity (“….by the cross you have been saved”) and also a belief in the intercession of Brigid who in Irish tradition is known as Muire na nGael, Mary of the Irish. Brigid’s feast day is kept on 1st February which is the old Celtic beginning of Spring - Imbolc.

St. Brigid’s Day St. Brigid’s Day St. Brigid’s Day St. Brigid’s Day ---- February 1st February 1st February 1st February 1st Born:453 :: Died:523
St Brigid’s Day is celebrated on the 1st February every year, the first day of Spring. St Brigid is the Patron Saint of Ireland and of the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin. A few years after St. Patrick arrived, a little girl named Brigid was born at Faughart, County Louth, in Ireland. Her father was an Irish Lord named Dubtach and her mother was a Christian slave named Brocca. As Brigid grew up, her love for Jesus grew deep. She once heard St. Patrick preach and never forgot his teaching for the rest of her life. She looked for Jesus in the poor and often brought food and clothing to them. One day she gave away a whole pail of milk and then she began to worry about what her mother would say. She prayed to the Lord to make up for what she had given away. When she got home, her pail was full again. Another day Brigid gave away her fathers precious sword to a poor man so he could sell it to buy food. She was always helping the poor. Brigid's father wanted her to marry but Brigid had decided in her heart to give herself entirely to God. She did not want to marry anyone. Brigid finally got her wish and her father let her enter a convent. Brigid became a nun under Saint Mel and shortly afterwards she founded a monastery on land given to her by the King of Leinster. The land was called Cill Dara (Kildare) or the “the church of the oak”.
Saint Brigids CrossSaint Brigids CrossSaint Brigids CrossSaint Brigids Cross It is customary on St. Brigid's Day to make a
Cross known as a "St. Brigid's Cross". The
following story may account for the tradition.
St. Brigid once acted as a nurse for a sick pagan
chieftain. As he slept, Brigid made a cross with
some rushes that were on the floor. When the
chieftain woke he asked Brigid about the cross
and she told him the story of Jesus. The man
was deeply impressed and became a Christian.
Today people still make St. Brigid’s Crosses.
They are made from rushes or reeds. Once the
Cross is woven, it is blessed and it is then hung
in homes and left in place all year, to be burned
and replaced with a newly-woven Cross on the
next St. Brigid's Day. The Saint Brigid’s Cross is
believed to bless and bring luck to every person
who enters the house.
Prayer to St. Brigid You were a woman of Peace,
You brought harmony where there was conflict, You brought light to the darkness, You brought hope to the downcast,
May the mantle of your Peace cover those who are troubled and anxious and may Peace be firmly rooted
in our hearts and in our world. Inspire us to act justly and to reverence all God has made.
Brigid you were a voice for the wounded and the weary. Strengthen what is weak within us.
Calm us into a quietness that heals and listens. May we grow each day into greater wholeness in mind, body and spirit. Amen
The feast of St. Brigid on the first of February is a celebration of the wonderful springing back of the earth from its winter sleep. It is the season when we celebrate new beginnings and new life on earth. Many of the stories about Brigid tell of her milking the cows, churning the milk, making butter, shepherding her flocks of sheep and helping with the harvest. One day when Brigid was on a long journey she stopped to rest. A rich lady stopped and gave her a beautiful basket of apples. No sooner had she received them than a group of very poor people came by and begged her for food. Without a moment’s hesitation, Brigid gave them the apples. The rich lady was utterly disgusted and she complained to Brigid, ‘I brought those apples for you, not for them.’ Brigid’s reply was: ‘What’s mine is theirs.’
Many wells are named after St Brigid.

The Catholic School…The Catholic School…The Catholic School…The Catholic School…
Catholic Schools week runs from
30th January to 5th February 2011. In Catholic Schools Week
2011 we reflect on what it is to be rooted in Jesus Christ. Jesus was a teacher. His followers call him
teacher forty-five times in the Gospels. They perceive him as
someone who could teach them, from whom they could learn. The questions and requests they made
of him echo in our schools today.

St Blaise
3rd February
Patron of Throat
Illnesses Many might remember Saint Blaise's feast day because o f the
Blessing of the Throats that took place on this day. Saint Blaise's protection of those with throat troubles apparently comes from a legend that a boy was brought to him who had a fishbone stuck in his throat. The boy was about to die when Saint Blaise healed him. More at risk of sharp speech than fish bones? Tag onto your intercession that Saint Blaise use your voice and words in a way that honours God.
