FR. GEORGE’S MESSAGE REGARDING THANKSGIVING DAY My beloved brethren in Christ, Apostle Paul strongly encourages all the Christian people to Give thanks always for all things to God” (Ephesians 5:20). The vibrant tradition of the Thanksgiving holiday in our country is a special oppor- tunity for each of us to offer a testimony, through the Church, of our gratitude in our re- lationship with God. God’s compassion, mercy, and love are infinitely great for all the humankind. Every- thing good thing and perfect gift, we have in our life, is coming down from God. As Or- thodox Christians, we bring an offering of ultimate thanksgiving to God, when we gather in the Church for worshiping, praising, honouring and glorifying His Most-Majestic Name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We commune with Him and ex- press our thankfulness to Him, through our participation in the Holiest Sacrament of the Divine Eucharist/Liturgy, an act of true thanksgiving for His Divine mercy and salva- tion. Prioritizing thankfulness in our worship and faith guides us to offer thanksgiving all the time, to live in gratitude in all the circumstances of life. As a matter of fact, there are many prayers of Thanksgiving to God in the Divine Lit- urgy. That is why, we also refer to the Divine Liturgy as a Holy Eucharist ( Efharistia). First, we give thanks to God, because He created us from nothing into being, by His great mercy and love. Afterwards, we say, “It is proper and right to give thanks to You, o God, in all places of Your Dominion”. We also say, “We give thanks to You, o God, for all things that we know and do not know, for blessings seen and unseen”. After re- ceiving the Holy Communion, we say to God, “We give thanks to You, loving Master, benefactor of our souls, that on this day You have made us worthy once again of Your heavenly and immortal Mysteries”. Furthermore, Thanksgiving Day should be a day of remembrance, a day for reflecting with deep respect and humility on our responsibilities as children of God. And the most significant responsibility we all have toward God, is to take care of our soul, which is the most important part of each human, because it is immortal. How can we achieve that? By repenting, my brethren. Only through repentance we can lead ourselves to para- dise. This year, as we celebrate Thanksgiving Day with our families, and give thanks to God for all the wonderful things He gives us, let us also take the time to thank Him for his abundant mercy on our souls for our sins. Let us reflect on how we can turn to God. Let us thank Him for providing us with the unique opportunity of repentance and for- giveness, and change our lives so that we become closer to Him. Finally, it is beneficial for all of us to express our gratitude to God not only for the temporal success and security of this earthly life, but mainly for the everlasting promises of our salvation. And the most perfect way to give thanks to God, is through our willing participation, as a family, in every Divine Eucharist, and especially Sunday’s, because then we mainly celebrate the Holy Resurrection (Easter) of our Lord and Saviour God, Jesus Christ. I wish all of you a happy and beautiful Thanksgiving Day, at your blessed family ta- ble. May the Lord continue to bestow upon each of you and your beloved families all His Blessings. FR. GEORGE’S MESSAGE REGARDING THANKSGIVING DAY My beloved brethren in Christ, Apostle Paul strongly encourages all the Christian people to

“Give thanks always for all things to God” (Ephesians 5:20). The vibrant tradition of the Thanksgiving holiday in our country is a special oppor-

tunity for each of us to offer a testimony, through the Church, of our gratitude in our re-lationship with God.

God’s compassion, mercy, and love are infinitely great for all the humankind. Every-thing good thing and perfect gift, we have in our life, is coming down from God. As Or-thodox Christians, we bring an offering of ultimate thanksgiving to God, when we gather in the Church for worshiping, praising, honouring and glorifying His Most-Majestic Name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We commune with Him and ex-press our thankfulness to Him, through our participation in the Holiest Sacrament of the Divine Eucharist/Liturgy, an act of true thanksgiving for His Divine mercy and salva-tion. Prioritizing thankfulness in our worship and faith guides us to offer thanksgiving all the time, to live in gratitude in all the circumstances of life.

As a matter of fact, there are many prayers of Thanksgiving to God in the Divine Lit-urgy. That is why, we also refer to the Divine Liturgy as a Holy Eucharist (Efharistia). After re-ceiving the Holy Communion, we say to God, “We give thanks to You, loving Master, benefactor of our souls, that on this day You have made us worthy once again of Your heavenly and immortal Mysteries”.

Only through repentance we can lead ourselves to para-dise.

This year, as we celebrate Thanksgiving Day with our families, and give thanks to God for all the wonderful things He gives us, let us also take the time to thank Him for his abundant mercy on our souls for our sins. Let us reflect on how we can turn to God. Let us thank Him for providing us with the unique opportunity of repentance and for-giveness, and change our lives so that we become closer to Him.

I wish all of you a happy and beautiful Thanksgiving Day, at your blessed family ta-ble. May the Lord continue to bestow upon each of you and your beloved families all His Blessings.

With love in Christ, Rev. Fr. George Kouzelis, Presiding Priest

Sunday School News from the Annunciation

Greetings! We would like to officially welcome Father George Kouzelis and Presbytera Stavroula and their family to our parish. We are thrilled to have them here in Winston-Salem! With the start of our new Sunday school year, we look forward to all of Father George’s insight and guidance to our program. We’d also like to remind everyone that Sunday School begins right after Holy Communion and ends after the sermon. It is best to allow all of the students to proceed to their classes and then return to church for the remainder of the service. If your student needs to be dismissed early, please see one of the Sunday School directors to get your child. We like to have the least amount disruption for the little time they have in Sunday school each week. Our charity food drive continues this month. We ask that you please send in nonperishable food items and leave them by the Sunday school corner. Please help us fill the boxes. Thank you to those ladies who have been servicing as our Maidens for Christ, they contin-ue to do a wonderful job each Sunday. We have a special holiday craft scheduled for November 24th for our Kindergarten through 5th grade. Also, a reminder that attending the Divine liturgy in another town can be counted for Sun-day School attendance. The necessary form can be found at www.wsgoc.org. Thank you again for your cooperation. We wish you all a wonderful and safe Thanksgiv-ing season.

ST. PAISIOS THE ATHONITE

“Panagia, Our Most‐loving Mother”

- Geronda, tell us something about the Panagia. - What should I tell you? You put me into a very difficult position. For someone to speak about the Panagia, he must have lived and experience Her presence. - Geronda, does the name of Panagia also have spiritual power as does the name of Jesus Christ? - Yes! Whoever has great reverence for Panagia, will hear Her name and be-come transformed. Or, if he finds Panagia’s name written down somewhere, he will kiss it with reverence and become excited. He is capable of doing an entire Supplication Service with one continuous remembrance of the Panagia's name. And when he reverences Her Icon, he does not feel that it is an Icon, but the Panagia Herself, and so he falls down broken, softened by Her love. - Geronda, tell us something about your pilgrimage to the Panagia of Tinos. - What should I say? It is such a small Icon and it has such great Grace! I could not remove myself from Her presence. I only moved a little to the side, so that I would not be obstructing the others who wanted to kiss the Icon. Out of much reverence, the Elder would sometimes kiss the name of the Panagia repeatedly. - Geronda, some people are scandalized by the many offerings that are at-tached by strings upon the miraculous Icons of the Panagia. - Let me tell you what happened once to a very simple and pious pilgrim. He went to the Monastery of Iveron (=one of the twenty monasteries of the Holy Mountain) and reverenced the Panagia Portaitissa. There the Icon is covered with gold coins. Upon leaving, on his way to the Monastery of Stavronikita, he began thinking and said to himself: "My Panagia, I had hoped to see you differ-ently; simple, without any gold coins." What do you think happened to him in the meantime? He was seized by a very severe pain, became dizzy and fell to the ground, there in the middle of the road. Then, he began asking for help from the Panagia: "My Panagia, heal me and I will bring you two gold coins!" Then the Panagia appeared to him and told him: "That is how people brought me the gold coins. Do you think that I asked for them? Do you think that I wanted them?" Immediately his pain was gone. You see, because he had a good disposi-tion and much faith, Panagia helped him.

WHAT IS WARM UP AMERICA (WUA!) Warm Up America! (WUA!) is an organization made up of volunteers who create hand-made afghan blankets, clothing and accessories to help those in need. These items provide warmth and comfort to people who have lost their homes, fled abusive relations, or are be-ing cared for in hospices, shelters, hospitals, and nursing home. Evie Rosen, a former yarn retailer and nationally known knitting teacher who resides in Wausau, Wisconsin, came up with the idea for Warm Up America! because she wanted to do something to help the homeless. Her simple concept of asking customers, friends and the community to knit and crochet 7" X 9" sections that would be joined into afghans grew into a nationwide program that has produced more than 250,000 afghans. These afghans have been donated to victims of natural disasters, battered women's shelters, the homeless, and others in need. By 1995, the program was an overwhelming success and Evie turned to the Craft Yam Council of America, a non-profit association of yarn companies and publishers, for assis-tance. Warm Up America! soon became a major national, grassroots program. In 2002, Warm Up America! was incorporated as a 501C3 tax exempt, charitable organization. Today, WUA! includes countless volunteers across the country. Thousands and thousands of knitted and crocheted afghans and accessories are distributed to various charities each year. How it works ...Volunteers donate their time to crochet and knit a 7" X 9" rectangle (or more). Sections are either joined by individuals or groups in a community and donated locally or sent to Foundation headquarters for joining and distribution. The beauty of so many different participants is that a WUA! afghan resembles a patchwork quilt of many colors and textures, just as the participants and recipients represent the varied faces of America. Collection of Completed Sections and Assembly of Afghan Blankets Volunteers are encouraged to work with friends, co-workers and family members to complete an afghan and donate it in their community. However, when that is not possible, the Founda-tion's office serves as a collection point both for individual sections and for completed afghans. Distribution of Afghan Blankets The Foundation maintains a request list of charitable agencies, which provide services to homeless, battered women's shelters and people in. need. As afghan blankets are received at the Foundation, they are shipped to the agency on the top of the list. Contact is maintained with the agencies on the Foundation's database before and after shipping the afghans. Who receives the afghans? WUA! afghans are distributed to individuals and families in need through community service organizations as well as through chapters of national organizations such as the American Red Cross. Sponsors of WUA! In communities around the country are encouraged to donate com-pleted afghans within their own community in the true spirit of "neighbor helping neighbor." Agencies to which the Foundation has donated afghans include: Women's shelters Daycare centers Homeless shelters Nursing homes Children's hospitals Veterans' homes Churches American Red Cross chapters Hospitals and hospices AIDS facilities

Mission News

It is with sadness that I recently had to withdraw from the Guatemala Healthcare Mission trip through OCMC in November, due to health reasons.  To those who donated to OCMC on my behalf, I am glad to report that OCMC will hold these funds so that I may par ci-pate in a future mission to Guatemala in 2020.  Please be assured that your dona ons are appreciated and will con nue to be used well and wisely to further the mission!   As re-covery permits, I will be sending out personal messages to all donors.  Thank you for your kindness and understanding, and prayers!     I remain blessed to be a part of this beau ful Annuncia on community.  ~~~Susan Washinsky
