MYP Summer Reading & Writing Requirements

Summer Reading Requirements: According to the grade-level you will be entering in August 2018, you

MUST read the novel(s) listed and be prepared to partake in graded activities, involving these novels once school begins.

Summer Writing Requirements: 6th-7th-8th grade students will keep a summer journal or travel log with

a minimum of one entry per week—10 entries in total. Each entry must be at least one full page in length, and include the date the entry was written. Please bind your entries together to make a booklet—be creative! All

entries must be typed. ABSOLUTELY NO notebooks, composition books, folders, etc. will be collected.

Listed below are suggested writing ideas.

• Reflect on or summarize the book(s) you are reading

• Write a letter to a character from the book(s) you are reading

• Create a timeline of major events from the book(s) you are reading

• Choose a newspaper or magazine article that interests you and write a reaction

• Visit a historical landmark and write about the experience

• Write about your personal feelings and/or experiences during the summer

In coming 6th grade students should have the basic knowledge and comprehension of the following

1. Skills & methods utilized by scientist

2. Using measurements in science i.e. using SI units of measurement such as the metric system to

measure attributes including density, volume, distance, mass, weight, time, temperature etc…

3. Using math in science i.e. calculating percent errors, estimation, and graphing data.

4. Doing experiments and documenting data using the scientific method/inquiry skills.

5. Identify independent variables, dependent variables, controls, constants etc.

6. Must know how to write a full scale lab report (awareness of every component in a detailed lab

report).

10. Weathering and Erosion

11. Exploring Earth’s surface and its geological aspects i.e. (all layers, rock type in the crust, volcanoes,

earthquakes, and Natural disasters.
