More than 600 film permits were issued by Auckland Coun-cil in the 2018/2019 year, and the statistics show that our slice of paradise is now a favourite with screen producers.

Franklin’s unique and beautiful coastal and rural landscapes are increasingly making their way on to television and big screens around New Zealand and the world, thanks to grow-ing interest from film producers – and the cooperation of local communities.

While Auckland’s west and central city have historically been the mainstay of Auckland’s on-location filming, Frank-lin’s appeal is now gaining greater attention. The Trustees of Beachlands Community Trust received a complaint from a Beach-lands resident early this year.

The complaint was made against Jenny Carter in her role as manager of the Beach-lands Community Trust. In summary, it alleged that Jenny abused her position in the Trust and the community to bully the complainant who was engaged inde-pendently in various community-based projects.

An independent investigation conducted by an investigator assigned by the Arbi-

trators’ and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand has concluded:

1. Jenny’s behaviours did not meet the definition of bullying.

2. Jenny’s behaviour patterns were not targeting the complainant.

3. The complainant and her supporters’ retaliation against Jenny and/or the Trust, particularly online, takes away the complainant’s right to have their complaint about bullying upheld.

The Trustees now consider this matter closed and request that all accusations of

Think Global - Act LocalWe can’t all be Greta Thunberg. (Who?)

The Swedish 16-year-old recently made headlines in the world press with a rather forthright speech at the United Nations 2019 Climate Action Summit in which she demanded world leaders do more to address the effects of climate change.

She copped a lot of flak for being quite so blunt. From Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear fame calling her a “spoiled brat” to the likes of NZ’s own Mike Hosking and Duncan Garner tossing disparaging comments at the young woman. I can’t help but note their comments were aimed at the person and not her argument – at the player, not the ball, as it were.

So what is her argument and how does it relate to my life here in the countryside of South Auckland? By the way, this is certainly not intended as some sort of lifestyle magazine column which might be titled “The 10 Best Ways To Save The Planet”! But I do have some suggestions.

I believe Thunberg is simply trying to raise the awareness that the systems we live our lives within, the infrastruc-ture that supports those systems, the life-habits we practice (generally) are scientifically proven to be having seri-ous detrimental effects for our future. Raise the awareness, make us think and consequently bring about some changes

to those systems and that infrastructure to affect positive change.

I need my diesel powered ute on my lifestyle block in Hunua. It works. It’s my current choice as the best tool for the job. Hundreds of the local residents, farmers, small business operators are in a similar situation. So what to do? Until such time as the manufacturers produce an electric vehicle with the comparable capabilities, I intend to minimise its use for short er-rands, keep it well maintained and when the time comes to replace it I will be doing my research to select the least environ-mentally damaging alternative.

I’ve been guilty of putting too much green waste on my burn pile – twice a year. I’ll be separating all I can in the future to an accessible, rather large, compost pile. I do this now with much of our garden waste but I can increase the quantity ten-fold, I’m guessing. That should result in only one burn a year.

Our fireplace is a source of great comfort through the winter months as is our heat pump on those evenings I can’t be both-ered hauling wood. I am embarrassed to admit how many sweaters I have in my wardrobe which do not see the light of day, or should that be, the cool of the evening!

Plastic. How condescending it would be of me to suggest to you how to manage the plastic which proliferates our lives.

Just do it.I’ve helped plant a few trees and

grasses over the past year and will be continuing this activity with an increased involvement with the local group Friends of Te Wairoa Catchment.

It becomes quite obvious that all the above are really quite simple things, small actions, actions we all are already aware of as being important and signifi-cant. Part of my take of Ms Thunberg’s message is these small actions should not be something we have to stop and think about. Not only should we be merging these actions into our daily lives, we should be doing so without thinking. Making effort to minimise waste and consumption should be the normal way of living our lives, not the exception. Not because a 16-year-old young woman told us to.

There is, I believe, a sense that we all have to work within the infrastructure and systems which exist within society and the big positive changes needed to “save the planet” are outside our control. This does not mean that the small chang-es don’t matter, don’t have significant measureable effect over time. They do.

I have no intention of running off to live in a yurt, eating grass and possums. I will, though, be a small part of the larger difference as best I can. Now.

bullying against the complainant by Jen-ny Carter be removed from social media accounts.

The latest census might have been botched, but at least the results have final-ly been released by Statistics New Zea-land.

As expected, the 2018 census data shows growth in all areas of the Pohutu-kawa Coast, Cleve-don, Hunua, Ard-more and Kawakawa Bay-Orere.

T h e p o p u l a t i o n numbers recorded by the 2018 census (see Table 1, right), re-flect the Pohutukawa Coast Times’ distribution numbers, sug-gesting that for our district at least, the census is reasonably accurate.

The combined population of our area’s local communities is just 1.1% of Auck-land’s overall population.

Fewer young people, more seniorsIn Clevedon, the number of children un-

der the age of 15-years-old has dropped, from 336 in 2013 to 294 in 2018 - a decrease of more than 10% which ranks it among Auckland’s top areas of young resident decline.

Throughout the same period, our senior population rose significantly.

Whitford’s senior population recorded a jump of more than 30%, with the number

2018 census results show increase in Coast’s senior age group

of over-65s increasing from 324 in 2013 to 429 in 2018.

Beachlands, Maraetai, Hunua, and Cle-vedon also recorded strong growth in the number of residents aged over-65 years.

The growth of senior-aged persons in our region was higher than the Auckland average, which was recorded at 15-20%.

National statistics about topics such as ethnicity, educational qualifications and

hours worked each week are available on the Statistics NZ website. At this stage no details have been released by Statistics NZ which show a breakdown of the national picture into regional areas.

LettersI would like to endorse some of the

comments made by deputy mayor Bill Cashmore in the PC Times issue dated 27 September 2019.

While we all complain bitterly about the amount of rates we ratepayers are lumbered with, the reality is the council actually perform a huge number of duties and supply a large number of amenities throughout the city, all of which has to be paid for.

That said however, and as Bill suggests, some criticisms of council expenditure and performance standards are justified. For example, according to people in the building trade who complain vehemently about the process, the interpretation of cost and time taken dealing with resource consents, building consents, along with the ability of some officer’s ability to read plans correctly. When there is a housing shortage it is surprising that some fast tracking hasn’t been put in place.

Another issue raised in social circles is the deviation away from council core responsibilities in favour of “warm fuzzy” matters that receive ratepayer paid funding such as festivals. The feeling here is that roading, footpaths, drainage, water supply and sewerage disposal are more important.

Another issue raised over the years is the inequitability of rates collection. Many see that a citizens’ tax capturing all of society over a selected few would be a fairer solution. The last figure I remember being quoted was that 65% of properties in the Manukau catchment are rental

properties, leaving the rates payable by the landlord, under the misconception that these rates are recoverable in the rent paid. The reality is that rent is based on a supply and demand basis which is sub-ject to fluctuations. However these things aside, our chance to make changes to the present system is through the democratic process of voting.

So please everyone, read the choices on the voting information on candidates standing, make a decision and cast your vote. Then you too have the right to crit-icise, complain or otherwise comment.

Geoff Bignell, Maraetai

Editor’s note:There will be mobile ballot boxes this

Saturday 11 October at Countdown Beachlands (4.30-7pm) and the Clevedon District Centre (2-4pm).

The sad truth is, this soccer club and all its various hangers on are long past the days of playing a congenial game of soccer on Beachlands Domain.

You have been given a sports centre for this very reason. Back in the day, people had thought this one out. There is plenty of room on Te Puru for your teams to play and practice and plenty of room for the rugby teams as well. There was a lot of community work done at Te Puru in the form of fundraising to give Beachlands and Maraetai a special place where every-one could meet and have fun.

Be very careful when you start telling the public what is going to happen to their land that is paid for by their rates and their taxes.

The sign on Beachlands Rd does not say that Beachlands Domain is the home of Beachlands Maraetai Associated Football Club, it says ‘Beachlands Domain Beach-lands Maraetai Soccer Club’. It seems

very strange that people can appropriate land for their own use just by the fact that a sign has been placed on the side of a road. Perhaps Beachlands Domain could be the venue of the high school that is needed so badly out here.

the area’s unique landscapes, beaches and relatively quiet coastal roads. I’m sure some people who see the region on screen will be inspired to visit for themselves.

“Our job is to work with Franklin Local Board to ensure the Council permit con-ditions strike the right balance between communities’ needs as filming takes place around them, and Council’s support for a hugely important industry for our region.”

In the 2018/19 year, 617 permits were issued across Auckland – just shy of the annual record – earning Auckland’s thriving production and post-production industry more than a billion dollars in gross revenue.

Under Council’s permit fee system, Screen Auckland gave back to Franklin Local Board nearly $3000 from the fees charged in the area during 2018/19. The fee Council charges for a shoot varies based on its size and impact.

Franklin Local Board chair Angela Fulljames says: “Franklin Local Board are excited about the potential for screen production as a contributor to local eco-

nomic activity in our region.“We have a diversity of environments

that make us an attractive location to work in, and we are pleased to welcome productions. Recognising ourselves and our special places on screen is also a bit of a thrill and generates local pride in Franklin,” says Angela.

Screen production in Auckland directly supports more than 1600 companies and 3500 jobs. It also has a ‘halo’ effect, boosting business for a range of support industries. In most cases, productions and crews spend directly into the communities where filming takes place, from local caterers to building supplies merchants.

Jasmine Millet says: “Council appre-ciates the cooperation of residents who may be briefly affected by short-term road closures, or sections of parks being closed off, when scenes are being shot.

“The industry is growing rapidly in our region, bringing exciting job opportuni-ties, hundreds of millions in international investment, and exposure that will benefit all of us.”

Ten months of trapping at the Pohutu-kawa Coast Presbyterian Church has resulted in 11 possums, 31 rats and 2 mice eliminated from the 2.5 acre property in Jacob’s Way.

A grant from the Franklin Local Board community grants scheme helped the church purchase 2 tunnel rat traps, a stoat trap, and 2 Timms traps.

This was supported by Omana Regional Park ranger Mags Ramsey, who loaned the church a Timms trap and negotiated 4 plastic rat traps to be donated by Auckland Council.

are going to be involved in the church’s pest control efforts in 2020.

Church member Faye Clark says the results speak for themselves. Church members are noticing increased numbers of lizards, and sightings of kereru, grey warbler, fantail, wax-eye, tui and king-fisher are also increasing.

“We plan to do counts on the national counting day each year to see how our efforts of both planting native trees, and trapping predators are affecting bird pop-ulations and will report back to the com-munity in 12 months with our progress,” says Faye.

scorching sun. The meadow had small patches of flowers everywhere - as if a

flower girl had accidentally spilled her basket of beautiful flowers on the floor and left them to grow. Cold The frigid, glacial clearing was dressed in pure white snow. It dazzled and sparkled, while flurries of crisp, polar wind win-

nowed throughout the land letting out long echoing howls. - by Jemma Bancroft (aged 11) Maraetai Beach School

POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (11 October 2019) 7

When students from Brookby School arrived at Maraetai’s Magazine Bay to pick up rubbish recently, they thought it was going to be an easy task - until they took a closer look.

“You look at the beach and it looks super clean and tidy but then when you go in for a closer look, and it is like a rubbish dump. People just drop their rubbish thinking that is ok,” says student Elizabeth Blong.

Brookby School’s enviro councillor students had organised the clean-up as part of the GJ Gardner Keep New Zealand Beautiful clean-up week. Students and their families were keen to take action and get involved and promoted the event by making posters and giving reminders to the students.

Teacher Sarah Blong says that students found all types of rubbish buried within the sand including zip ties, rubber bands, glass, bottle tops, micro plastics, fishing line and rope, cigarette butts and even a broken bottle. The clean-up crew also found a large amount of rubbish around the the carpark, including used nappies, lots of beer bottles, and even plastic con-tainers stuffed into trees.

“It was a real eye opener given at first glance the area appeared fairly rubbish free. When you started looking that’s when so much rubbish was found. Even the number of cigarette butts was staggering. To think this rubbish can end up in our oceans is very concerning,” says Sarah.

Student Spencer Ha was astonished at-

the amount of beer bottles he found, and suggested that a liquor ban around beaches and parks could be an idea.

Another student, Mackenzie Ha, sug-gested that with summer approaching people could incorporate a small clean up into their weekend family activities when visiting parks or beaches. Mackenzie was concerned about the rope and fishing line she found that could suffocate wildlife.

Logan Bishop-Read said the clean up was cool. “I was happy to be involved and it felt really good to be picking up rubbish. Basically it was awesome!”

Mental Wellness Series20 October - 10 November

Held at 59 Third View Ave, Beachlands | 536 6360 | [email protected]

Parenting Place Seminar “Raising Confident, Happy & Resilient Kids” - 19 November

Beachlands Baptist Church is excited to bring “Blessed, Stressed and De-pressed” to the Coast. We love this concept because we believe we have so much to be grateful for and yet with so much going on in our lives, looking after our own well being often takes a back seat. This series also coincides with NZ Mental Health Awareness Week from 7–13 October. As a church, we have elected to devote four weeks to explore, educate

and encourage people around mental wellness. It’s a conversation which isn’t widely spoken about and yet affects us all. Neil Hamilton, Pastor of Beachlands Baptist Church says: “We are super

excited to start this series on 20 October with award-winning singer/songwriter Julia Grace. The concept of Blessed, Stressed and Depressed is based on a mental wellness resource that Julia and her husband Mykle have created. We have also invited Pastor and performer Matt Chapman of the internation-ally renowned band, Detour 180, to speak in this series, and we will host a panel of medical professionals who will talk about the physiological aspect of mental wellness.”Neil says he recently read that 1 in 2 New Zealanders will meet the criteria

for a mental health diagnosis at some stage in their lifetime. “This confirms that we live in a society where depression and anxiety are one of the most under-rated and overlooked illnesses because people fear being labelled and misunderstood,” says Neil. “As a Pastor I believe we have got to change our attitude towards mental wellness because at some point in our lives we will all feel confusion, sorrow and grief. Therefore can I urge you as a community to journey with us as we embrace this incredibly important topic. Everyone is invited to church on 20 October starting at 10am.”Beachlands Baptist Church events manager Michelle Ramsey adds that

building mental wellness is equally important in the early years. “Early men-tal health is like building a strong foundation for a house, providing a safe, secure base that everything else in the house relies upon. We are excited to have the Parenting Place present a vitally important workshop called ‘Raising confident, happy and resilient kids’ to the Beachlands/Maraetai community on Tuesday 19 November at Beachlands Baptist Church.Doors will open at 7pm with tickets costing $10 per person or $15 per

couple. Supper will be served. Bookings are essential and can be made at [email protected]

Asparagus season has just started. At this time of year I buy a pot of horseradish (or wasabi) and actually use it! Just add ½ tsp to your butter and serve on top of asparagus. It is the best! Or add it to this hollanda-ise sauce recipe; a fail-safe way to try hollandaise sauce for the first time.

Here is my perfectionist way to cook asparagus. Prep:1.Prepare stalks by snapping off the hard white ends (approx. 1 inch) and pop prepared stalks into boiling salted water,

leaving the tips out of the water. Boil for 30 seconds-1 minute until the asparagus turns bright green.2.Immediately dunk asparagus in an ice cold water bath, so it turns bright green3.Drain and cook asparagus how you like, e.g. fry in oil for 2-5 minutes

in a fry pan or on the BBQ until it is as tender as you like it.

Creamy Hollandaise Sauce (enough for 1 bunch of asparagus)1 cup of milk 1 cup of chicken stock1 Tbsp cornflour ¼ tsp nutmeg2 egg yolks 2 tsp of creamed horseradishJuice from 1 lemon

1.Add milk, chicken stock, and cornflour to a pot and stir continuously over medium heat.

2.When sauce boils and thickens add egg yolks, juice from 1 lemon, nutmeg and horseradish. Whisk until you have a thick sauce, and serve immediately.

Coastal Cat Rescue ‘Cat of the Month’Each month the PC Times profiles a cat which is ready to go to a new home after being res-cued by Coastal Cat Rescue.

Coastal Cat Rescue is a volunteer organisation based in Beachlands which helps to find loving and responsible homes for stray or dumped cats.

Gracie came to us in desperate need of help. She was starving, weighing a meagre 1.8 kgs, was suffering from the worst worm infestation we have seen, and had what appeared to be burn injuries to her nose and ear. Slowly Gracie has healed, putting on weight, gaining confidence and learning that people aren’t always bad. Despite her horrendous life Gracie has a huge amount of love to give. She is a purr machine, loves to play and adores being brushed. We are now looking for a very special retirement home for this beautiful cat. Gracie needs some-one that will take the time to earn her trust. Preferably they will be willing to bond with her before Gracie has the disruption of leaving Coastal Cat Rescue. This special someone will have the time to pamper her and understand that Gracie is not young, has suffered abuse and would not be suitable for life as an outdoor cat. Gracie would be happi-est as an only pet, in a home without children. Can you offer Gracie a safe and loving place to call her own? If so, please visit our Facebook group, Coastal Cat Rescue or text 028 4200124 to arrange to visit Gracie or the other lovely cats we have available for adoption.

After a successful launch last year, the Rotary ALLFIT Coastal Run is all set for 2019. Funds raised from last year’s event helped a number of young people on the Coast with mental health issues. Proceeds from this year’s event will continue to help young people in the area.

Rotary ALLFIT Coastal Run Facts:• Date: Sunday 4 November• Events: 10km and 5km run/walks,

plus a school relay for years 5-8• Route: races start from Duder Re-

gional Park (10km, school relay) and Maraetai Beach (5km)

• Traffic Management: half-road clo-sure of Maraetai Coast Road

• Transport: buses from Te Puru Park to Duder Regional Park

• Early Bird Pricing: available until midnight on Saturday 12 October

• Prizes: for winning runners plus lots of spot prizes including a Viking 2+1 Kayak

• Website: RotaryCoastalRun.nz for online entry, pricing and other in-formation

Event organisers, Rotary Club of Po-

hutukawa Coast, say one of the aims of the run is to allow non-profit groups, businesses and residents to be involved to provide, and add to, a sense of community on the Coast.

“Also modern living is often too stressful and sedentary. This event hopes to encour-age people to enjoy getting outdoors and gaining fitness to improve their physical and mental well-being,” says president Alex Garden.

Organisers would like to hear from:• groups who would like to sell goods

or offer a service at the Te Puru finish• businesses who would like to support

the event and charity by donating goods for prizes

• volunteers who would like to help out on the race weekend

Rotary Club of Pohutukawa Coast would like to thank ALLFIT gym for supporting this event as naming sponsors and for being fully involved in the concept and planning of the event. Other sponsors and supporters include Franklin Local Board, Jaedon Manufacturing, Fletcher Living, Beachlands Medical Centre and Sealink.

Bridge repairs lead to road closureAT plans to start repairing Whitford’s Mangemangeroa

Bridge this Sunday 13 October, which could lead to overnight road closures for up to seven weeks.

The work is being done to repair damage to the bridge caused by a truck crash in April.

Earlier this week, an AT spokesperson said they were still confirming the scope of works with their contractor. “At this time, the approach is for the work to be done under night closure but we have not confirmed whether it is going to be a full closure, or just a stop-go, mainly due to clashes with other closures in the vicinity.”

AT also says the start date of the work may change. Once repairs are underway, the section of road between

the Somerville Road roundabout and the intersection of Broomfields/Whitford Road will be fully or partially closed each night between 9pm and 6am.

Commuters should use Sandstone Road as an alternative route during these hours.

The work is expected to be complete by 29 November.AT says it is working through a number of the issues

raised by Franklin Local Board members during tours of the area.
