Franke South africa, 100 years Old

The very early days 1914 – Moodliar’s Galvanised Iron Products

Franke South africa started out as a small manufacturing enterprise of sheet metal product, founded by Mr Singaravello Moodliar in 1914. Trading as Moodliar’s galvanised Iron products, a workshop was occupied on the North bank of the Umgeni River about seven kilometres from the centre of Durban. In this workshop articles such as water tanks, water cans, Ricksha lamps, and bins were produced from imported galvanised sheet steel. at 25 years old, this was indeed a major pioneering effort

worthy of record.

The Story of Mr. Singaravello

Born on the island of Mauritius of South Indian parentage, Mr Singaravello came to South africa at seven months old in 1889. It is an historical fact that the then Natal government decided to encourage agricultural enterprise. Indian agriculture labourers were encouraged to come to Natal from India on a contractual or “indenture” basis for a period of ten years with the option of remaining after the initial period was served.

One such individual was Murugessa, the father of Singaravello, who together with his wife immigrated to Natal from Mauritius having originally come from South India. Murugessa was a Tinsmith by trade and soon earned himself a position as assistant to the engineer of a sugar mill near Ottawa on Natal’s North Coast. By virtue of his skills he was offered and occupied the highest technical position amongst any of the indentured settlers of that time.

Murugessa’s sheet metal working and mechanical abilities were passed on to his two sons Singaravello and Ramasamy of whom the former was the older.

amongst the earliest to encourage the young Singaravello was Mr. Maurice kaplan of the economic Builders Suppliers of Queens Street, Durban. Besides being a business associate, Mr. kaplan became a firm family friend.

In 1924 business was growing and Singaravello moved to new and bigger premises in Briardene. The elder of Singaravello’s sons,

govindasamy Moodliar was also forced to leave school at age 12 to begin his a long apprenticeship. The automatic manufacture of billy cans or camp kettles was added to the list of metal products. These were extensively used by the Railways and mine workers as food containers.

The years of the great Depression (1929 – 1934) were difficult years for everybody but the Moodliars persevered, however in 1939 the entire business was virtually handed away to a family friend. almost immediately the Singaravello’s moved to the south of Durban to make a fresh start without capital. Senior, joined his father once more in 1944 at the end of the most trying economic conditions at the end of World War 2. Machinery and materials were extremely scarce and unbelievably high in price and money was just not available. empty jam tins and condense milk cans were turned into drinking receptacles, and scrap steel offcuts were made into toy beach buckets and water cans.Singaravello’s health was failing

and in 1944 he passed away. This left Senior to carry on the battle against overwhelming odds, and assisted by some of his brothers, he renewed his acquaintance with many former business friends. Senior’s untarnished reputation and conduct invited tremendous support from local merchants who had known him as a much younger man in the late 1920’s and 1930’s. His energy, enterprise, self-sacrifice and innovative spirit saw the business grow from strength to strength.

In 1949 the business formally known as “Moodliar’s galvanised products” was changed to “City Metal products”.

City Metal products -1949

The range of products grew steadily over the years to follow, but were confined largely to galvanised and mild steel until in 1956, City Metal products (CMp) bought out the entire sink making plant from Francis & graham limited. CMp was now in STaINleSS STeel. It was in that

year that Vadivaloo Moodliar (Junior) joined the business at the age of 21.property expropriation for road development as well as shortage of space saw the shift to a new factory site at Isipingo on the southern boundry of Durban opposite the then louis Botha airport. The land and buildings (a three acre site with about 70 000 square feet under cover) owned by father and son while all the shares in Isipingo Metal Fabrications (pty) limited (trading as City Metal products) were family owned.

By 1974 – 60 years after the company’s commencement, CMpwas employing around 300 employees. The manufacture of electric water heaters and also Motor vehicle components was phased out at this time as the company expanded on its hollow-ware and sink production. Warehouses were established in gauteng and Western Cape to distribute the company’s products around the country.

During the early 1980’s, the company introduced their first one-piece pressed sink technology, producing a complete sink from a single sheet of stainless steel.

The Boumat group began to show an interest in CMp, and subsequently 80% of the equity was sold to Boumat in 1982. In the same year, CMp also acquired another manufacturer , W.B. Camerons . During 1988 Boumat became the 100% shareholder of

City Metal products.

Franke history

Meanwhile 8000 kilometres away in Switzerland there was a very similar company with a similar journey. a man by the name of Hermann Franke, had too started a sheet metal workshop from humble beginnings in 1911, which was now a thriving manufacturer of Stainless Steel Sinks, Sanitaryware and Washroom products, and Food Service equipment. Sinks remained a central point in the group’s production, and the Franke name became associated with the most advanced sink design developments.

The construction boom occurring across europe, as the continent rebuilt and modernized its cities following the war, presented still greater growth opportunities for Franke into the 1950s and 1960s. Demand for sanitary installations and systems, was particularly high, as that market evolved rapidly in the post-war years. private, in-house bathrooms, showers, and toilets now became the norm in many markets where previously they had been unavailable; public and communal washroom facilities also were modernized. The rapid growth of the sector led Franke to develop a dedicated Washroom and Sanitary equipment product group into the 1950s. By the end of the decade, the

company’s product offering spanned the complete range of washroom equipment and fittings.Meanwhile, the construction boom occurring elsewhere in europe, and the strong demand for the company’s state-of-the-art kitchen and washroom equipment, attracted Franke’s expansion interest. The company began adding its first international components in the 1950s, starting in germany in 1955. Over the next decades, the company added operations throughout europe, entering Italy in 1963 and France in 1964, among other markets. By the early 1970s, the company had added 12 foreign subsidiaries. During this

1930’s - the Frankfurt Kitchen measured 1.9 m by 3.4 m with a standard layout. Also separated to keep the steam and smells of

cooking out of the living room.

Post-war kitchens in the1950s were bright, colourful, and made to measure, rather than the prefabbed units of the past two decades.

Elements from professional kitchens found their way into domestic kitchens at the end

of the 1980’s.

period, the company expanded strongly, boosting its number of employees from 750 at the start of the 1960s, to more than 2,500 into the 1970s.

a major milestone in the company growth came in 1972. When McDonald’s began to expand its restaurant empire into europe, it turned to Franke to provide much of its kitchen equipment. The company’s relationship with McDonald’s quickly expanded, and the company became a major provider to the fast-food giant worldwide. The company’s expertise in this area also brought it contracts from many of McDonald’s competitors, including Burger king. Nonetheless, McDonald’s remained one of the company’s largest customers, accounting for a significant portion of the group’s annual sales -nearly 20 percent into the 2000s.

In the early 1980s, the company became interested in expanding beyond its kitchen and sanitary systems operations. The company’s target fell on the promising professional coffee machine sector. always strong in its european base, the sector was undergoing something of a revolution in the United States, where the appearance of the first Starbucks in the early 1980s inspired a new appreciation for gourmet coffees. In 1984, Franke acquired century-old coffee machine producer augsberger. The company’s intention was to redevelop its new subsidiary, now called Franke kaffeemaschinen ag (later known as Franke Coffee System s in english), into a producer of high-end, high-

tech coffee machines . The rapid success of this subsidiary led the company in 1988 to restructure its operations into several core divisions, including kitchen Systems, Washroom and Sanitary Facilities, and Coffee Systems.

The restructuring prepared Franke for a new period of strong growth. led by Michael pieper, son of Willi pieper, who took over as group CeO in 1989, the company began transforming itself into a truly global operation. Over the next decade and half, the company entered most of the major world markets. By 2005, the company counted some 85 subsidiaries worldwide. acquisitions formed a major role in the group’s expansion. In 1990, for example, Franke expanded in the United kingdom through the £8 million purchase of Carron phoenix.

global leader in the new Century

The collapse of the Soviet system and the newly liberalised markets in eastern europe presented a fresh opportunity for growth close to home. Franke began expanding into the Central and eastern european markets through the 1990s and into the 2000s. The company turned to poland, in 1993, establishing a subsidiary in Warsaw. Franke also entered Russia that year, and then established operations in Hungary in 1994. Closer to home, the company established a dedicated subsidiary for the portuguese market in 1995.yet Franke’s expansion continued beyond europe. In 1995, the company entered mainland China, establishing a presence in what was

soon to become the world’s fastest growing economy. In 1997, Franke boosted its presence in South america, launching a local subsidiary in Brazil. Further international growth led the group into Bulgaria in 2000 and Thailand in 2002.

Franke South africa 1999 till now

It was in 1999 that Franke acquired a presence in South africa, through its acquisition of City Metal products (CMp) from Boumat ltd.

The addition of CMp, renamed as Franke kitchen Systems ( pTy) lTD South africa, placed Franke as the leading manufacturer and distributor of kitchen sinks and stainless steel sanitary ware products for the residential and commercial markets (including medical and security).

at the same time, the company renewed it’s licence agreement with Zip australia to continue to produce a range of instant boiling water units and chillers for the africa continent . During early 2003, Franke South africa invested in laser cutting technology and during 2007 it launched a range of WC pans using robotic technology – WC pans are exported to all corners of the world.

as a result of the Franke acquisition , the South african subsidiary gained valuable access to Swiss technology to deliver products representing the Franke global brand standards. It also meant that the company now had access to a wider range of Swiss high end products consisting of sinks, taps and washroom accessories. During the same time, the Deko range of electronic bedpan and instrument washers/disinfectors were introduced with very successful results throughout several hospitals in South africa

after the success of Franke’s participation in amashova 2013, there was no hesitation in the decision to do it all again in 2014 as part of our centenary in africa celebration. This year we will be hosting 115 cyclists vs the 26 participants under the Franke flag in 2013

It was decided, after so much interest in last years festivities, why not use this event and Franke’s broad client and supplier list to make a difference. It is with this in mind that the sponsorship concept come to fruition.

The months leading upto amashova 2014 have been spent securing 10 of Franke’s most valuable suppliers as co-sponsors for the event.

The sponsorships will allow us to donate R20 000 towards Hospice. We thank our sponsors for their kind gesture to support us in promoting a healthy lifestyle and assisting those in need.

Franke is the current market leader in Southern africa. When considering the entire Sub-Saharan region, the picture changes .Whilst we were very active in our neighboring countries, we tended to focus on more “stable” markets such as australasia .according to companies such as ernest and young, the likes of Nigeria, ghana, angola, egypt, kenya, ethiopia and South africa will be considered among the growth powerhouses of the global economy.

Studies have indicated that africa’s population could grow in excess of 14 million people per annum between the periods 2000 to 2050. This is in stark contrast to european countries and this growth will play a vital role in the Franke expansion plans.

growing into africa is not plain sailing as each country has different challenges such as infrastructure and high operating costs with variances in import duties .

Despite some potential bumps in the road, Franke has decided to expand into africa and in the final stages of implementation of it’s sales offices in east and West africa to be fully functional early 2015.

To support our expansion plan, we have made the following appointment:

Franke South africa Role and Responsibility:

as a company, Franke South africa work towards Continuous Improvement with a common goal to improve qualityas well as reduce waste and costs.

This is achieved through several ongoing projects at our factory:

1.0 Water Recycling

The spring at the northwest corner of the site currently drops approximately 1 litre of water per second into the storm drain. This equates to ± 2592 kl of water wasted every month. The spring water has been tested and it is has been graded as class 2 water. This means that it is drinkable but continued consumption is not recommended. Therefore a water filtration system was installed that will bring the water to a class 1 status. This system has been connected onto the water pipes and effectively removes the need for municipal water supply.

“Thinking and acting in a sustainable way is simply a must. ecological, economical, and social aspects shall be considered in whatever we do – from office to production floor. “Sustainability means fairness towards future generations. everything we do should be made in a way that all of us can face our children with clear conscience.I trust in all Franke employees to take responsibility and work on sustainable solutions for our customers.”

3.0 Energy Saving Projects

Between 2011 & 2013 Franke Mobeni replaced the 400W Mercury Vapour lamps in the press Shop, Warehouses and Manufacturing area with High Output T5 Fluorescent lights which run on Time and proximity switches. This has resulted in approximately 80% saving in power consumption.

4.0 Continuous Improvement product and quality management systems:

Continues improvement is not a process or a procedure – it is a culture within our company and regular meetings are held with production teams to ensure that we comply with occupation , safety and health regulations.

Teams meet regularly do discuss ideas to reduce costs, improve processes and/or quality. all the action plans are displayed to ensure that we continuesly improve our business .

5.0 “Going Green” Process

5.1 The Recycling of Stainless Steel

With the onset of environmental awareness and the increased need to reduce carbon footprints, business and industry are looking for better ways to ensure their products are environmentally friendly.

Stainless steel is a green product. It is 100% recyclable, as it is not coated with any toxic material it does not produce toxic run-off. a huge difference can be made by companies and individuals by simply choosing stainless steel over non-recycable materials.

Stainless Steel objects hardly ever become waste at the end of their useful life. The estimated end-Of-life Recycling ratio is 80 to 90%.

as well as iron, stainless steel contains other valuable raw materials, especially chromium, nickel and molybdenum, which makes recycling stainless steel economically viable.

Stainless steel recycling is a self–sustaining process. Reprocessing stainless steel is economically viable and technically proven. The most important ingredients for stainless steel production are recycled stainless steel and other steel alloys.

In 2006, about 28 million tonnes of stainless steel were produced. To make it, about 17 million tonnes of recycled stainless steel and other recycled ferrous materials were used. The unparalleled growth of stainless steel production and use explains why 11 million tonnes of virgin material had to be put into the recycling loop.

any stainless steel object has an average recycled content of about 60%. Stainless steel is made up of:

- 40% raw materials (like ferrochromium, ferronickel) added to the recycling loop

- 20% old scrap, for example end-of-life products like tanks or industrial products.

- 35% new scrap, for example materials returning from production and manufacturing.

Stainless steel is not consumed, it remains part of the sustainable closed-loop system.Unlike many other engineering materials, stainless steel is recycled without any degradation!

SUSTainaBiliTy aT Franke SOUTh aFriCa

even if stainless steel is not recycled and it does find its way to a landfill or disposal site, it will have no detrimental effect to the soil or groundwater.

Stainless Steel is the preferred material for green building throughout the world. Its impact on the environment is minimal when compared to other materials and its life impact reduces significantly as it is used and recycled.

Source : ISSF ( International Stainless Steel Forum)

Summary: The selection of the stainless steel brings performance and protection of our natural resources together.

5.2 Monobloc technology – reducing CO2

emissions, waste and water

The monobloc method of manufacturing allows for more cost-effective and reliable production of sinks from one single sheet of stainless steel as opposed to welding and grinding processes. This process also eliminates welding and grinding of sinks and reduces the risk l for corrosion and quality-related problems associated with distorting of welds.

The environmental advantages of monobloc technology are:

- Reduction in CO2 emissions produced during welding

- Reduced water consumption- Reduced amount of waste materials

The secret of stainless steel lies in a thin, invisible oxide film covering the surface. This protective film is very stable and strongly resists many forms of attack. Most important of all, the film can restore itself instantly if broken or scratched, unless some special outside influence prevents it.

Common grades of Stainless Steel

There are many grades of Stainless Steel that are presently available however; there are only 5 grades that are generally used in the building industry for the manufacture

CHEMICAL IN % AGE GRADE 430 GRADE 441 GRADE 202 GRADE 304 GRADE 316

CHROMIUM 16-18% 17.5-18.5% 17-19% 18% 18%

NICKEL 0.75% 0% 4-6% 10% 10%

MOLYBDENUM 0% 0% 0% 0% 2%

MANGANESE 1% 1% 7.5-10% 0% 0%

Grades of Stainless Steel used by Franke, with chemical index

of Stainless Steel Sanitaryware, Hospital and Mortuary products:GRADES 430, 441, 202, 304 & 316

• The common non-magneticstainless steels have better corrosion resistance than the common magnetic grades because they contain more chromium and molybdenum.

• In the non-magnetic grades, the atoms are lined up in a crystal structure known as “austenite “. In the common magnetic grades, the atoms are lined up in a crystal

structure known as “ferrite”

So 304 and 316 are often called austenitic grades, and 441 and 430 are called ferritic grades.

Suitable for coastal areas, where mild corrosive conditions exist. Suitable for hospitals and where food preparation takes place.

Grade 316 (18/10/2) Suitable for severe corrosive conditions as in laboratories, photographic developing and sea vessels but not suitable for all kinds of concentrated chemicals eg. sulphuric, hydrochloric acid.

Maintenance of Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel is one of the easiest materials to clean and keep clean. This fortunate fact means reduction in labour cost, elimination of time loss and generally longer life. The following are common problems experienced with products after

installation on site.

Under certain conditions Stainless Steel will Stain, Rust or exhibit evidence of corrosion, which is generally due to destruction of the protective “passive” Chrome Oxide layer on the surface of the Steel by contamination from a foreign object. If a steel can is left on the surface of a Stainless Steel product, where water is present, even overnight, it will display Rust at the points of contact on the surface of the Stainless Steel. Contact with acidic or alkaline solutions, Iron containing substances and products containing Chlorine will cause Staining, Rust and Corrosion. The integrity of the passive film is vital for the corrosion resistance of stainless steel take care of it avoid

contamination and/or mechanical damage, maintain it repair and restore it if damaged. If impaired or destroyed in use ensure that the surface is not shielded from access to Oxygen – Stainless Steel needs Oxygen.

who was Cecilia Makiwane?

Cecilia Makiwane was born in 1880 at the MacFarlane Mission in the Victoria district of alice in the eastern Cape. Her father was a teacher and a minister and so she was taught at home before she even entered school. She later attended the lovedale girl’s School where she obtained a teacher’s certificate.

In 1898, an experimental nurse’s training school was opened for black nurses at the lovedale Mission Hospital and in 1902 a three-year nursing course was introduced at lovedale College. In 1903, Makiwane enrolled, even though she had her teacher’s certificate.

On completion, she and the other student she enrolled with were sent to Butterworth Hospital for further training to prepare them for the Colonial Medical Council examination. She sat for her final examination for general nurses of the Colonial Medical Council on the 19 December 1907.

On the 7 January 1908, after passing her exams, Makiwane was registered as the first black professional nurse.

There are approximately 70 000 unnatural deaths a year in South africa, and, broadly speaking, these can be divided into homicidal, suicidal and accidental deaths. a death, the cause of which is unknown, is also considered unnatural until proven otherwise. The forensic pathology service (FpS) involves managing medico-legal mortuaries where forensic autopsies on all cases of unnatural deaths are done and evidence for legal and court purposes are collected. Medico-legal mortuaries differ from hospital mortuaries or mortuaries attached to the premises of funeral undertakers, where bodies are simply stored.

Medico-legal autopsies of all unnatural deaths occurring in the Durban municipality are routinely carried out in three state mortuaries (phoenix, gale Street and pinetown).

In June 2011, the Dept. of public Works and Health awarded the project for phoenix M6 Forensic Mortuary to TI Joint Venture who came in with the lowest bid of R68 750

000.00. later the contract was handed over to g liveiro due to TI Joint Venture declaring bankruptcy.

The University of South africa (UNISa), the largest university in africa and one of the world’s great mega-universities, has invested close on R1 billion into the refurbishment of the building, including construction of additional buildings and state-of-the-art laboratories including equipment.

Science, engineering and technology have been identified as areas where there is an acute shortage of skills in Sa, and must receive intense focus in both basic and higher education. The new UNISa Science Campus offers state-of-the-art facilities to enable the teaching and learning of science in Florida, Johannesburg. The campus houses UNISa’s College of agriculture and environmental Sciences, as well as its College of Science, engineering and Technology.

The projected R 22,67 million office will save Mitchell’s plain residents time and money, who were previously travelling far distances to register their vehicles for example in Strandfontein or Cape Town.

The service centre will house administrative offices for staff, a meeting chamber for sub council meetings as well as a minor hall for community activities. The civic office is also close to various public transport interchanges, as well as close to the police station

With the use of innovative eco-friendly and sustainable designs, the civic offices embody the principles of a 21st century building. The facility has three storeys, the third level housing a roof garden allowing for food gardens to flourish. With wheelchair ramps and an elevator, the building is universally accessible. eight artists from Mitchell’s plain were also chosen to create artworks commissioned for the new building. and 12 role models have also been chosen to

be included in the lentegeur Heroes Walk where plaques of their faces have been put up on poles along Melkbos Road.
