Supporting families in Eau Claire & Dunn Counties is a

“gift” that the Family Resource Center both gives and

receives —and we are thankful. Each time a family

opens their heart & sometimes even their home to us, we receive so

much in the relationship we build. We become a team, focused on

providing the best for each child in that family. We offer insight intochild development, ideas for activities, resources in the community,

and sometimes even a shoulder to lean on. Together we figure out this

adventure called "parenting"! Each time a donation arrives at our

center, we are able to take that gift -- and give it back to the

community. No matter if that donation may be a box of Kleenex or a

check, we are thankful. As a non-profit, we rely on caring individuals

and funders to support us so we can support families.

The FRC acknowledges the recent grants we have received that

support our programs and several new initiatives:

*United Way of the Greater Chippewa Valley

*United Way of Dunn County

*Anne Marie Foundation

*Community Foundation of Dunn County

*Women’s Giving Circle Fund of the Eau Claire Community Foundation

*Wisconsin Alliance for Infant Mental Health

As we move into the new year, I look back on everything that has been accomplished while I havebeen working in Dunn County. I have had the pleasure of working with so many new and excitingpeople that have touched not only my life, but so many lives of others. Appreciation seems to besomething we do not often express; we all get so consumed with our day to day activities that we

often forget to stop and say thank you. So, with that being said, I would like to say thank you.Thank you to the many people from Arbor Place, Dunn County Department of Human Services, Red

Cedar Mayo, Marshfield Clinic, UW Extension, Dunn County Partnership for Youth, Dunn CountyCommunity Action Team, ARC of Dunn County, Dunn County Partners for Resilience, and to all the other key

players that have made my position here possible and successful. I would also like to say thank you to all myfamilies who have touched my life in a way I would have never thought possible. It is such a joy to be able towatch the families I work with become stronger each and every day. I look forward to a new year and new

possibilities to come.

Melissa Lokken - Parent Educator Eau Claire

When it comes to being appreciative and being a good role model to your children, the holidays area perfect time for a teaching moment. There is absolutely nothing wrong with giving children gifts, but how do you celebrate at your house? As a parent it is a great idea to define what celebratingmeans so you can shift the focus of “getting” into “giving”. Teach your children that homemadegifts are more meaningful to others and feel good to give. You can make handmade items such as

baked treats and package them up for neighbors, friends and loved ones. Have your children narrow down the“wants” on their holiday lists to just a handful of items. I have a friend that requests four things from theirchildren when making holiday lists. 1. A need 2. A want 3. One thing to wear 4. One thing to read. This keeps

their children really focused in on what they ask for and helps them reflect on what real needs are. Make theholidays a special time for family. Go ice skating, decorate your house, play board games, drive and look atthe lights or watch special holiday programing together. The memories that you make with your children willforever outlast anything they receive as a gift. Lastly…give of yourself. Choose a child who is needy to buyfor, get involved with a charity by volunteering or donating, ring the bell at a collection kettle. This will getyour children to think of others outside of themselves. You will be teaching your children a lifelong lesson onappreciation and will look forward to each and every holiday season.

Sharon Ivers - Parent Educator Rural Eau Claire County

It’s the “little things”…a dinner invitation from my son and daughter-in-law mid-week when I’mhome alone…a co-worker who brings in hot chocolate on a cold, snowy day… a friend who listens, just listens, and then makes me laugh…a hug from a child after a circle time story and song…a callfrom a mom to say, “Hi!” and talk about her child. It’s the little things that show we appreciate

others. When we do the “little things” and acknowledge the little things others do for us, it

validates our relationships and makes them even stronger. We feel valued and respected, makingour lives happier and more meaningful. I truly appreciate not only my family, friends, andco-workers, but also the children and parents I have developed relationships with through the Family

Resource Center! My wish for all is to have a memorable, remarkable 2016. And may you begin and end eachday with appreciation for the “Little Things.”

On appreciation...

I hear “Thank You”

approximately tentimes a day from

parents to childrenbecause they appreciate that we

are here for them. The truth is, I

appreciate them. They give me asense of pride and

accomplishment. I make sure that

the playroom is picked up,

vacuumed, and ready for the next

day so that the families can come

and share important bonding and

development together.

“Appreciation can make a day,

even change a life. Your

willingness to put it into words is

all that is necessary.”

~Margaret Cousins

Stephanie Macik - Resource Educator

When I think of the word “appreciation”, I think of a quote that has been a favorite of minefor a long time. “Enjoy the little things in life…for one day you’ll look back and realize theywere the big things.” I try to live my life with this in mind and really try to recognize all of

the positive people and things in my life, no matter how big or small one might classify them.I appreciate my family; they are my foundation and without them my life would not be nearlyas fulfilled. I appreciate my friends; they have been a constant source of laughter, happinessand guidance. I appreciate my home; having a place to call my own gives me a feeling I can’t

quite describe. I appreciate my profession; I’m constantly learning from new experiences and from theknowledge that my coworkers have given me. I appreciate coffee, art, music I’ve heard for the first time

and been blown away by, the mountains, painting, reading, eating at a new restaurant, traveling, quotes, and a million other things. There are no boundaries as far as what you can appreciate in life, and

I think it should be everybody’s goal to appreciate as many things as possible.

New & Improved!

One of the roles of the Family Resource Center is to place “our ear to the rail” — to listen, reallylisten, to families, the community and to other agency partners. We often debrief and reflect onhow to better serve families in Dunn and Eau Claire Counties. In 2016, we will take this one morestep — hosting an Advisory Council for Dunn County and for Eau Claire County to help us think abouwhat we are doing well and what we can do better.

We will be shaking things up just a bit in 2016! We have learned that attending a “parent training”at the end of a long day may not be too appealing...so we are introducing the Parent Café—a newstatewide initiative in both Menomonie and Eau Claire. The Parent Café will meet on a consistentevening each month and will include a shared meal, a parent/child activity, child care and topics ointerest chosen by participants. We are thankful to The Community Foundation of Dunn County forfunding the Menomonie Parent Café and to the Women’s Giving Circle Fund of the Eau ClaireCommunity Foundation for funding the Eau Claire Parent Café. *See the enclosed flyer*

In addition, we will be offering a Baby Café in partnership with Northwest Breastfeeding Networkand Child Care Partnership in 2016. We are thankful to the Wisconsin Alliance for Infant MentalHealth for providing start up funding for this initiative—which will also include “Baby & Me” bags focheck out.

Finally, our other new initiative—Rural Family Play N’ Learn Play Groups in Altoona, Fall Creek,

Augusta and Fairchild have been met with a standing ovation. We are excited to continue to watchthem grow!

The Parenting ClassOnline*

The Parenting Class will cover variousgeneral parenting topics such as:

co-parenting, communication,

discipline, routines and dealing withchildren’s anger.

*Approximately 3 hours to complete.

Take this self -paced class online throughemail and receive a certificate upon

completion.Cost is $10.

For more information and to register, callthe Family Resource Center

at 715-833

* You must have an email account toreceive and submit assignments to

instructor. Class takes approximately 3hours to complete but is divided into 6lessons. Each lesson must be approvedby the instructor during normal businesshours before new lessons can be given.Class timeline works best in a 5-10 day

period at minimum, but can beself paced to fit individual needs.
