We were asked to re-design a webpage and the challenge was how do we give it a makeover that represented what the page was meant to do. Our group chose adult sci-fi author Jacqueline Careys site www.jacqueline carey.com. The basic design of the site had a wordpress generic feel with a white background and a brown logo. Immediately we wanted to change the colors and make the site more vibrant and dynamic. We started with a black background and a changing of the logos color from brown to crymson red. Unfortunately , our initial website endeavor felt more like the original but with an invert black background and white text. Didn't work for us conceptually so we decided on a white background while maintaining the name logo because of it's elegance. We did change the color from brown to crymson red and added the Google font Lusitana because we felt it gave a crisp and concise feel to the site. After choosing her latest book as the image for the site, we felt like simplifying the navigation so her fans could navigate to her books, bio info, faqs page and blog area would best keep the original intent of the design while still employing a fresh look. I enjoyed this exercise because it allowed me to focus on the concept of the website as opposed to the bells and whistles approach. It forced me to examine my approach to web design. In past design efforts it was always about all the cool things you can do on your website. Even though as a frequent perusor of sites i'm not all that enamored with the extra features. So the contradiction in my design thoughts as opposed to my user sensabilities was not lost on me. The prevailing thought being, design for user ease. You can be aesthetically pleasing while being easy to navigate. There is a complexity in simplicity. It is up to the designer to find that happy medium.
