Frederick News – February 8, 2019 Family Game Night Our PTO Family Game Night is tonight. We will have board games as well as an open gym. Both 5 th and 6 th graders are invited to this event along with other family members ( brothers, sisters, moms, dads, …). Admission is $3 / person and we will have snacks and drinks for sale as well. Headphones With everyone’s new Chromebook, we have found that a set of headphones might be a good investment. While we do have some available at school, most kids prefer to have their own so they don’t have to share. These would be especially useful when we start our next round of MAP testing starting next week. Congratulations Congratulations to the Grayslake Central High School Cheerleaders for winning the IHSA State Championship last weekend. Way To Go! Random Acts of Kindness WEEK February 18-22, 2019

 Dear Guardians,

Did you know that kindness is good for your health? Studies show that kindness can decrease depression, lower your stress, and increase your lifespan. Performing a Random Act of Kindness does not only help the recipient but also everyone who witnessed the act! Imagine how many people can be positively impacted by one person, doing one good deed?

We are preparing for our 3rd annual Random Acts of Kindness Week at Frederick School. See the calendar below for the some of the exciting things that are happening each day. Please help spread kindness by talking with your child about this special week. Share stories about how someone was kind to you and how it made you feel. SEMANA de Actos Aleatorios de Bondad (RAK) Febrero 18-22, 2019

 Estimados padres/tutores,

Don’t miss our powerful speaker, Jackie Rhew, who will provide the essential tools to parents on how to build resiliency in children of any age. This presentation will review specific interventions designed to assist children in managing their anxiety and to promote increased motivation, healthy goal setting, and active school engagement in children. Factors that contribute to school avoidance as well as ways to identify maladaptive coping responses will be explored. Attendees will learn how to develop parenting strategies to assist their children with healthy coping responses and engage them in effective communication and language that promotes self-advocacy and independence.

About Jackie Rhew, LCPC, CADC: Jackie is the cofounder for the Center for Emotional Wellness of the Northwest Suburbs. She served as Assistant Director for seven years for the School Anxiety/School Refusal Program at AMITA Health Hospital in Hoffman Estates, a program she was instrumental in creating and developing. Jackie has worked in hospital, educational and private practice settings, both in the Chicagoland area and overseas, training adolescents dealing with school refusal, eating disorders, self-injury, substance abuse, gaming addictions, grief, trauma, depressions, and anxiety utilizing individual, family, and group therapy.

Grants Awarded Impact ALL 7 District 46 Schools

Each fall and spring, District 46 staff members are invited to apply to Foundation 46 for grant funds to support new

projects that the district may not otherwise be able to offer. Thanks to your participation in fundraising efforts

such as Barnfest and Major Saver, and to the many businesses who support our organization, we were able to

award a whopping $22,970 in grant funds this past fall. As community members, we sincerely thank the D46

faculty who dared to dream and put the time and effort into applying for funds. Thank you for your service to our

community and our kids!

Here are a few highlights. Check out our newsletter and website for more about the foundation.

GAIN Project...

Dr. Stephanie Diaz and the Newcomer Curriculum Committee were granted funding for the GAIN Project. The

GAIN Project will provide Newcomer students who are within their first 3 years in the country with diverse

experiences needed to understand and participate in the school and social culture in America. These experiences

will help Newcomer students create networks, contribute and engage in school culture, and increase their

understanding of the unwritten cultural norms. Ultimately, the GAIN Project will increase Newcomer students’

comfort levels with local culture and enable them to take academic risks in the classroom.

Mentor Texts...

Multiple grants were awarded toward the purchase of mentor texts at six D46 schools. Mentor texts expose

students to literature that they may not have picked up on their own and allow students to more fully explore and

assess plot, theme, and character development. The books not only extend learning to traditional reading and

writing, but can also be tied to other subjects like science and social science. Well chosen mentor texts help

students develop critical thought and spark their curiosity.
