Tax season is a stressful time for most people.

The first question most people have is, “DoI need to file?” In most cases, the amountof your income, your filing status and yourage determine if you must file a tax return. For example, if you’re single and 28 yearsold you must file if your income was at least$10,150. Other rules may apply if you’reself-employed or if you’re a dependent ofanother person. When in doubt, ask a taxprofessional or visit IRS.Gov/filing.

If you purchased health coverage fromthe Marketplace in 2014 and chose to haveadvance payments of the premium taxcredit sent directly to your insurer duringthe year you, YOU MUST FILE AFEDERAL TAX RETURN.

Of course, determining that you don’tneed to file is a huge weight off yourshoulders!

The next step in managing the stress isto be organized in your record keeping.Know what is needed and track coststhroughout the year, don’t let them pile up.This is an essential tip for small business

owners.Know which documents are necessary

and which aren’t. You know that you needto bring your income documents (W-2 or1099’s), but would you think to bring yourend of year bank statement to show thetotal interest that you were paid? If youhave a home office and you want to takedeductions, you need to provide thedimensions of both your office and yourhome/apartment in square feet. You wouldneed to provide the totals you spent onutilities and insurance. Most utilitycompanies will provide an annual summaryon the last bill of the year.

Tax preparers will want to see that youhave the documentation of the expensesyou claim.

Goods donated to non-profitorganizations are deductible IF you keepadequate records and file a Schedule A.Both Goodwill and The Salvation Armyprovide an estimation tool on their websitesto help you put a value on the goods youdonate. You will need to keep a list of theitems you donate, including their conditionand estimated value, and attach that list tothe receipt you get when you turn them in.

Business owners who have had capitalimprovements and material & suppliesexpenditures in prior years will need to filea FM 3115 because there were 4 rulingchanges in 2014/2015. Talk to you taxprofessional.

One of our most popular touristsouvenirs is the postcard. Practically anyplace where history minded travelers willcongregate one can find at least a modestselection of picture postcards available forsale. Inexpensive, and easily dropped in alocal mail box before leaving town, souvenir postcards have been around formore than a century in the United States.

Their origin is a bit of history in itself.Popularized during the “fin de siècle” erain France, the American roots derive fromthe May 19, 1898 Private Mailing CardAct. Prior to that date, the United StatesPost Office had been the only entity thatcould legally produce cards of this nature.Even after entrepreneurs entered themarket, there were strict rules as to thedesign and use of these cards. During thefirst three years after the act, thegovernment continued to retain the rightsto the words “Post Card” and requiredprivately produced cards carry theterm “Private Mailing Card”on the non-illustrated,or backside, of thecard. Until 1907,the backside wasalso strictly reservedfor the intendedmailing address.

With this in mind, early producers of thecards provided openspace around theillustration, usually toone side or below. Some of the earliestexamples placed theimage as a vignette inthe center of the card, providing a larger area for senders toexpress best wishes and a short note to

their friends and loved ones back home. The brevity of space on most cardspopularized the terse “having a nice time, wish you were here” greeting.

Relief for verbose travelers came in1907 with the introduction of “dividedback” cards, allowing for the right side tocontain the address information and theleft side for a more relaxed message space.Along with this change came anopportunity for a full front image.

Picture postcards became extremelypopular and a variety of publishers weremore than willing to provide assortedimages of the battlefield and other historicsites around the region to meet thedemand.

Some of the earliest Fredericksburgarea publishers of picture postcards wereFerris T. Cassidy, a druggist and physician

at 622 Caroline Street; J. WillardAdams, a bookstore

owner at variousaddresses, also onCaroline Street; andW. E. Lang who rana home furnishingsstore. Following ontheir heels would beprinter andstationer, RobertKishpaugh; anddruggist William L.Bond who came toFredericksburg in1907. Many of thelater Bondpostcards are easilyr e c o g n i z a b l ebecause Bond had

images producedwith him standing on a corner or walkingby the subject structure. As the postcard’s

Cards". All are pre-1907, with vignette images on

the front to allow space for messages.

42

Page 43: Fredericksburg Guidebook Spring 2015

popularity grew exponentially, Kishpaughand Bond both began to produce hand-colored cards. After World War I, both mendominated the local market.

Robert Kishpaugh, who started hisfledgling printing business in 1894 at theage of 15, operated that enterprise and apopular stationery store in town for nearlyseventy years. Besides postcards, heproduced a large array of tourism orientedsouvenir booklets and maps. He died athis home on April 20, 1965 at the age of86.

Today, collectors of postcards canfind a ready supply on the EBay auctionsite or at collectibles shows across thecountry. Fredericksburg material has aloyal, local collector base, which habituallyscan the auction listings for uncommonviews. The earliest images are always indemand and command the higher values.

Bust my britches...a letter!Little Changes That'll Make a Big

Difference With Your Business Protocol

Recently, I came across an antiquity and was so shocked and amazed thatI stopped everything I was doing and relived a moment. It was a hand

written letter! It wasn't a highly personal or romantic writing, but rather a thank you from acompany in which I had transacted many hours of business and their response was a handwrittenletter of thanks. It felt so odd to be reading a business correspondence written in ink by a realperson. It didn't even matter that it was probably a form letter repeated hundreds of times by amember of the secretarial pool. What mattered was that in this current time, one rarely, if everreceives anything by mail that requires thought and shows the human side of our culture...evensympathy cards are electronic.

The letter caused me to remember why I frequented their establishment in the firstplace. They certainly weren't the least expensive, the closest or even the one with the best BlackFriday specials. But rather, they were the ones whose employees understood the value of goodcustomer relationships. They introduced themselves properly and shook my hand while doing so;they answered the telephone like they were expecting my call; they were able to engage in moreconversation than the banalities of the weather and most importantly, they remembered myname. I felt welcomed and cherished and this I rewarded with loyalty. In a day when answeringmachines are designed to mimic human interaction, it is easy to forget the basics of beingrespectful, polite and well, even human! And while I don't think we will ever return to the time ofhand written correspondence (oh, the thought of cursive writing!) I do think we can make theworld a nicer place by remembering a few rules of basic business protocol...the expected andaccepted manner of behavior in a civil society!

1. Mind your handshake technique. We have all been turned off and even judged if weshake hands with a wet noodle or a bone crusher or even a pumper. Approach with confidence.Stick your hand out there, go web to web, up down up and release. It's a greeting that is taken forgranted but if done correctly makes a huge statement about your professional presence.

2. Make eye contact. Hey!...remember me, the one standing in front of you! Glancingaround the room or checking to see if your shoes are shined is most impolite during aconversation. It conveys disinterest, shifty motives and may give the impression that you are notto be taken seriously.

3. Introductions should be brief and not so personal that the other person squirms andbeats a hasty retreat. Keep business, business.

4. Smile when you answer the telephone. I am sure there is research on this, but yourentire voice changes when you smile. A smiling hello echo's across in the airwaves in nanosecondsto the person's ear and may calm a raging customer or encourage a reluctant client.

5. Going out networking? Watch where you position yourself in the room. If you stand inthe corner, you will appear shy and unapproachable. If you stand by the door, you may appearbored and disinterested. Stand near the center and use tips 1-4 above on a real person! Whoknows, you may actual make a connection instead of just a contact.

So maybe these seem like minor points that every professional

has mastered. But knowing is not doing...and doing is a matter of

consistently remembering that on the other end of every conversation

or interaction is someone hopefully just like ourselves...human!

The Hamburger—a long treasuredand constantly evolving culinary delightenjoyed across America, as well as here inthe City of Fredericksburg. Burgers canremain simple with a few pickles to top itoff or get more creative with a mushroomconfit or delicious secret sauce. This meaton bread combination has a long historyin Fredericksburg, back to when burgerjoints lined the path of US Route 1 (boththrough downtown and on the bypass). But it wasn’t the golden arches thatresidents and travelers flocked to; it wasthe unique, family-owned businesses thatwere popular and now hold their place inFredericksburg’s twentieth-centuryhistory.

When asking long-time residentswhere they purchased their burgers, theanswer often comes up as one of threelocations—Eddie Mack’s, The HotShoppes, or Hamburger Haven. EddieMack’s was located on Canal Street in the1940s through the 1960s, near the currentDorothy Hart Community Center. Now aprivate residence, mere mention of thebuilding brings up stories of high schoolstudents sneaking out for lunch and livelyafter-school meet-ups. The Hot Shoppeswas located on the Route 1 Bypass nearthe Fall Hill Avenue intersection. Whilesome remember Sunday trips to thisrestaurant with their family, others recall amore spirited reason for visiting thelocation. High school students entertainedthemselves by cruising the parking lot at

night with the occasional meet-up forraces down the, then wide-open, road ofRoute 3.

But what about now? How can theseburgers of days gone by be enjoyed today? One option is Hamburger Haven—originally located at 1915 Princess AnneStreet in front of the Princess AnneBowling Center. The family of theoriginal owner has recently reopened therestaurant using the family recipes, someoriginal suppliers, and old-fashioned,family-business work ethics. HamburgerHaven is now located inside the Gulf gasstation at 4300 Lafayette Boulevard, serving its original burger recipes as wellas a variety of other family favorites, allowing guests to get a taste ofFredericksburg’s restaurant history.

Or if you find yourself in downtownFredericksburg on “Restaurant Row,” stopby Vivify Burger Lounge (314 WilliamStreet). With a menu full of burgercreations and unique milkshakes, there’s anew, old-fashioned meal to fit everyappetite.

However you like your burger orwherever you prefer to eat it, it’s thecompany you keep and the memories youmake while enjoying that burger thatmatter the most. Bon appétit!

MissiOnK9s For Warriors salvages the lives of post-9-11

veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD) by partnering them with professionally trainedservice canines to assist these warriors’ efforts to returnto civilian life with dignity and independence. Thedogs, principally rescued from shelters, are partneredwith their Warrior for a life-long, life-saving bond. Inso doing we save the life of a shelter animal as well asthat of a traumatized veteran.

Amongst post-911 veterans DoD estimates that1-in-5 suffer from PTSD and that 1-in-6 will attemptsuicide or have suicidal tendencies. Warriors sufferingfrom PTSD tend to relive the fears andhorror of combat and experiencepsychological disabilities, such as socialavoidance, anxiety, emotional overload, depression, nightmares, and a generalsense of foreboding; as well as anexaggerated response to sudden noises orother triggers.

K9s For Warriors seeks to changeall that, and the results have beenremarkable: 152 veterans have beenmatched with service canines, with a 95% success rate– saving two lives at once. K9s for Warriors servicedogs are trained to mitigate the symptoms of PTSD,helping the warrior to live a normal, healthy life.Whereas a pet may be able to tell if his warrior is indistress, a service dog is trained to respond and performtasks to assist and lessen the distress. Examplesinclude: safety checking a room before the warriorenters; blocking an unwanted person from advancingtoo close; reminding the warrior to take medicine;helping locate forgotten items, such as vehicle orwallet; forging ahead around a corner in front of thewarrior; or licking, pawing or nudging the warriorduring a nightmare.

Service canines for post-traumatic stress are likeseeing-eye dogs for the mind.

facility; Warriors come, meet, & train with their newdog. K9s for Warriors focuses on the recovery of thewarrior. We can accommodate up to five Warriors amonth, which includes monthly classes.

• Dogs are rescued, boarded, and trained for3-to-7 months then partnered with theirWarrior.

• Beneficiaries are post-9-11 veterans ofcombat operations in either Afghanistan orIraq.

• Warrior beneficiaries join their dogsduring the final, partnering phase of trainingat the Academy in Ponte Vedra Beach,Florida.

• 152 K9s & Warriors have been partnered to date.• It costs approximately $15,000 to train each dog.• All of the program’s K9s are shelter rescues; the

dogs are custom matched and trained for the needs oftheir prospective Warrior partner.

“When a Warrior arrives at our Academy, they arriveon two legs; they leave on six, with their new canineservice partner. We have seen amazing results with ourprogram, which motivates us to expand our program tohelp as many Veterans suffering from PTSD as wecan.”

A. Smith Bowman Distillery Welcomes Home A New

500 Gallon Still Named George

Fredericksburg, VIRGINIA (January 20, 2015) – A. Smith Bowman Distilleryjust welcomed home a brand new still, naming it George, after the father of thepioneering Bowman brothers. George, also known as still number 1965, found hisplace next to Mary, the existing whiskey still, on Thursday as the installation processbegan. Mary is named after MaryHite Bowman, George’s wife, andthe mother of the Bowmanbrothers.

Designed to create morethan just whiskey, the new still wascustom made, with unique featureschosen by Master Distiller BrianPrewitt that allow him the freedomto explore his passion for creatingnew and exciting expressions.George also enables A. SmithBowman to craft spirits from startto finish.

“We want to have thecapability to try anything andeverything, and with George, weshould be able to do just that,”Prewitt said. “We’re excited to dosome experimenting, try newthings and continue to make greatspirits here at A. Smith BowmanDistillery.”

George is a 500 gallonhybrid pot still with a reflux onion, optional gin basket, and attached columns with bubble cap trays. These featuresallow Prewitt to create many different flavor profiles and a variety of spiritsincluding vodka, gin, and whiskey. Standing at 24 feet tall with a pot that isapproximately 1,700 pounds, George will weigh nearly four tons when full.

While George allows the Distillery to pursue their passion for newexpressions, current A. Smith Bowman spirits will continue to be crafted in theirconsistent method.

George arrived at the Distillery after making his journey from VendomeCopper and Brass Works in Louisville, Kentucky, where he was built. ThoughGeorge is now fully assembled, final connections are still in process before hisinaugural distillation run. George is expected to be in full operation starting inMarch.
