Well done to all our local businesses for keeping going during this difficult summer. It certainly hasn’t been easy. Let’s hope that as we edge forward into autumn things will become a little more ‘normal’ for everyone. It’s great to see places opening up again. The Valiant Soldier in Buckfastleigh has opened its doors, the playpark at Sanderspool Cross in South Brent is now open again and all are welcome at Holne Community Shop Tea Room, now under new management. Please keep supporting locally when you can. Although ‘Around Buckfastleigh & South Brent’ can’t do anything to solve our current problems we hope this issue helps to keep you upbeat and positive. Don’t miss Tereza Smith’s account of her 100 days at Rock Retirement Home!See you next time. Judy J

OUR 100 DAYS AT THE ROCK RETIREMENT HOME

20th March 2020, a day we will never forget. After conversations with our GP we decided to isolate the home and its residents. All of our residents are very elderly with health conditions, and an outbreak of Covid-19 did not bear thinking about. We were lucky enough to have a large room vacant, so Emma and I shot home, picked up our necessaries, sent the staff home and moved in. We did not know the extent of the problems ahead, but could only think about how best to keep residents safe and carry on with as little change and disruption as possible. We are a family run home, but we needed a little more help. Two of our senior carers were able to isolate. One moved in too, and the other went home and back, with her amazing kids staying in for the duration - they did require some incentives along the way!The furloughed staff were a great support to us, setting up a WhatsApp group keeping us entertained. They collected anything we couldn’t get like flour, Weetabix, cooking apples to name a few. We had chocolates and biscuits dropped off on the doorstep, and we received flowers, cards, sweets and chocolates from families and friends of current and past residents. A local ladies group made us scrubs to wear and a kind business owner made us visors - thank you.The residents flourished during this time of calm and continuity. We bought CDs, DVDs, musical instruments and craft books and pens and every day we spent as much time as we could entertaining our extended family. We kept in touch with their families by phone, text, photos and Skype, and all have supported us completely during this awful time.We have had weekly support from the Community Nurses as well as Buckfastleigh and Ashburton GP surgeries. A niece of one of our residents kindly did all of our pharmacy and surgery runs collecting and delivering prescriptions (she was also a volunteer). One of the hardest things in the first month was the shopping. Tesco was not playing ball even though we have been an online customer for over 10 years, and took them over a month to arrange slots for us. Then Asda came to

the rescue with immediate availability, with no restrictions, and saved the day.Every day we watched the news, the tragic loss of lives, the wonderful things people were doing, and we carried on bleaching, washing and ensuring the safety of our residents. When we passed 100 days we were surprised at how quickly the time had gone and in a funny way we enjoyed it, especially the closeness of spending so much quality time together, putting on weight and greying hair!

Hard times lie ahead as lockdown eases and everyone is beginning to move around. Staff are starting to come back and families and friends are waiting patiently to visit. As always, we will endeavour to do our best to keep everyone at The Rock safe and well.A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has helped and supported us along the way.

South Brent Access Signage ProjectVisitors to South Brent will now find it easier than ever to follow local footpaths in the area thanks to a joint project between Dartmoor National Park Authority and the local community.New timber fingerpost signs have been installed on the ends of footpaths and bridleways within the parish of South Brent with funding provided by Sustainable South Brent. The new signs, which are produced within the National Park, indicate the destinations and distances making it easier for users to find and follow paths. The work is supporting an extensive programme of replacing the distinctive timber fingerposts across the National Park, instilling a sense of place, utilising historic names and helping users more easily negotiate paths and trails across Dartmoor.

National Park Ranger, Ella Briens and Sustainable South Brent volunteers have been working together to look after local rights of way, and provided practical help on the ground to support conservation work around the old clay workings at Shipley Bridge.Ella Briens said, “We are grateful to Sustainable South Brent for the funding which is helping to support our work to look after public rights of way within South Brent. This area of the National Park is popular with walkers and riders and we hope the new signage will help people to explore Dartmoor.”

The Share Shed is a library of things, which is changing how people think about consumption and engage with each other at a community level. Originally based in Totnes, the Share Shed now also serves Buckfastleigh (Fridays), and Ashburton and South Brent (Saturdays) in a van, specially converted with the help of the National Lottery Community Fund, the Network of Wellbeing (NOW) and The School for Social Entrepreneurs. Over 700 people have signed up as Share Shed members enabling them to borrow things that they don’t use regularly, and consequently saving money, space and resources. The Share Shed’s collection includes things such as camping equipment, gardening tools, musical instruments, household appliances, bicycles, and much more. The most popular items include carpet cleaners, pressure washers, electric drills, strimmers, and sewing machines. You can become a member of the Share Shed and place reservations online. Membership fees are between £5 and £30.

South Brent’s Community Crisis Response

Since March, villagers in South Brent have come together to support those self-isolating and experiencing financial hardship in the village and surrounding area. The response from the local community has been wonderful, and people have donated food, given generous financial donations, and kindly volunteered hundreds of hours of their time. Thank you to everyone who’s helped. As the situation develops, we plan to stand down the coordinated community response from September, although we will be ready to resume should this be required. South Brent and District Caring will return to many of their normal activities and support those in South Brent, Avonwick, North Huish, Diptford and Rattery. You can still offer your help or receive support, please visit www.sbadc.org.uk for all the latest information, or call 01364 700282.

Our volunteer community shop has teamed up with Tom and Tina in the tearoom and we are looking forward to welcoming all our customers, whether you are doing your daily/weekly shop, popping in for that essential item that you ran out of, buying an icecream on a hot summer day, or sampling the tearoom cooking. Are you a walker (Two Moors Way and other beautiful local routes on Dartmoor), a cyclist, a canoeist, a holiday maker or visitor, or one of our locals? We have something for everyone and will try our best to get items in for you, if you don’t see them on the shelves. Our shop is sited in the centre of the village and stocks a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables, local produce including a large delicatessen section, a wide range of dairy products, most household items, cakes and other sweet delights, food for your picnics, snacks for your walks and cycle rides, a range of organic products and much more. New customers are always surprised at how well stocked we are. Our community shop has thrived during lockdown and it became the essential shop for locals during that difficult period. We are continuing our important Covid-19 protection measures, to ensure all customers and staff feel safe. We have employed a Shop Manager, who is brimful of new ideas about improving our ranges available and continuing our friendly service. We are happy to do deliveries. With the help of our volunteers, we are now open 9.30am to 5pm, 6 days a week (11am to 5pm on Sunday).

TOM AND TINA’S TEAROOMThe Tearooms have now reopened as of 4th July and are independently operated by myself and my husband and will be known as “Tom and Tina’s Tearoom”, located under the same roof as the well-stocked community shop. We are very excited and honoured to have been given this opportunity to be a part of the wonderful community of Holne. We provide good wholesome food cooked fresh, to eat in or takeaway as well as barista coffee, cakes, Devon cream teas and much more.

We currently open 5 days a week Wednesday through Sunday, 11am until 5pm. We have indoor seating, abiding by all Covid-19 regulations as well as a beautiful outdoor seating area overlooking the Dartmoor countryside. We look forward to welcoming the local community as well as new visitors to the area and will continue to develop our food menu with seasonal changes. Tom is extremely passionate about cooking, having hailed from a family run pub background and I have spent the last two years in the hospitality industry, predominantly working as a barista and prior to that, retail management was my area of expertise! We feel fortunate to have been able to combine forces to provide a good offering at the tearoom, listening to our customers and also being able to support other small and local businesses in the process – Voyager coffee at Buckfastleigh and Scoriton Farm clotted cream for our Devon cream teas! Come and visit us on your next Dartmoor adventure!

Cathie Pannell presenting the Community Champion Shield to Frank Noble last year

Seventy-five years ago our nation was celebrating the end of the horrors of the Second World War, with Victory over Japan Day falling on 15th August 1945. Sadly we have been unable to mark this with an official ceremony in the village, although we hope to be able to do so when we are allowed to have public gatherings again. This year we are slowly emerging from the difficulties of the lockdown caused by the Covid pandemic, although, as I am sure you are aware, we must all observe the continuing measures needed to protect ourselves and others from this devastating disease. A resurgence of the virus would strike a double blow against both our health and our economy. Just as the country had to rebuild after the war, so we now need to take what steps we can to help our community thrive again. During the lockdown our local traders proved just how valuable they are to village life. Our thanks go to all of them for going above and beyond their duty to supply us with so many of our needs during the emergency. We need to repay them by giving them the support they need to keep their businesses viable. Please shop locally where you can.I am happy to report that we have been able to reopen the playpark at Sanderspool Cross, and the public toilets in the centre of the village and the playpark. Please remember to observe social distancing. Unfortunately the toilets at Shipley Bridge are still closed. They are the responsibility of the South West Lakes Trust, who have so far been unable to arrange a cleaning regime so they can reopen. Please be assured we are putting on what pressure we can to remedy this situation as soon as possible.I would like to pay tribute to Frank Noble, our Community Champion for 2019, who sadly passed away recently. Frank was a former member of the Parish Council, instrumental

in setting up the primary school garden with Helen Hall, and a stalwart of Sustainable South Brent and The Marsh composting scheme. He was also deeply involved with the folk scene in the village and a great character. He will be sorely missed. One of our residents has recently celebrated her 100th birthday. I had the pleasure of taking her a bouquet and a card on behalf of the village to congratulate her, and found her hale and hearty. Finally we have a new date pencilled in for the South Brent Climate Fair, organised by Sustainable South Brent. It has been moved to next year, on 24th April, when hopefully many local organisations will be able to play their part in bringing home the message of what we need to do to address what is literally the other burning issue of the day – climate change.

THE VALIANT SOLDIER

The Valiant Soldier is openUnless government regulations change the Valiant Soldier is now open for the season, with the really great news that there will not be any admission charges this season. In these difficult times it would be great to go and visit a really interesting local attraction. We can all be guilty of not taking advantage of visiting attractions on our doorstop. The Valiant Soldier offers so much more than many people realise. Many of you will know that the Valiant Soldier is the pub that never closed, and what that offers is amazing, but there is also the Display Room, the Buckfastleigh Room and the Buckfastleigh Museum. The Display Room is used for various exhibitions relating to historical events. This year the exhibition will relate to how life was at the end of the war, including the 1945 election and local politics, and how life was getting back to normal again. As time moves on there will be information on the welfare state, housing and education, and the 1947 winter. The Buckfastleigh Room houses an exhibition on the history and heritage of the town which was the centre of Devon’s woollen industry in the 19th century. The Buckfastleigh Museum houses historical items, photographs and other items relating to Buckfastleigh and the general locality. The actual Valiant Soldier itself includes the lounge bar, the scullery and kitchen, the parlour, the lady’s bedroom and the attic.I will tempt you to visit the rooms in the Valiant Soldier in future articles.

My work centres around helping others understand their animals and to connect with them and nature. I offer Animal Communication Sessions and Photo Sessions (with people and animals). I sell limited edition Photographic Prints. I also offer Guided Experiences where people can explore for themselves how it feels to listen to nature and animals. It's beautiful to work this way, especially at a time when people are opening up even more to the gifts of the natural world. I can hardly say how important I feel that is.

My passion is nature and animals. Living on the edge of Dartmoor is a total joy for me. I love the moor in a way I can't describe, it's a huge canvas of inspiration and wildness. Dartmoor holds a rare beauty and power.

My work as a Photographer and Animal Communicator began through my walks and interactions with the ponies on the moors. Photographing them is incredible. I've had mind-blowing experiences spending time around them and this land.

Before long I wanted to share the magic of those connections with people. I also wanted to understand and feel life from the perspective of animals. This led me into becoming an Animal Communicator myself, which really is about listening through all our senses.

BUCKFASTLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL

A message from Andy Stokes, Chair of Buckfastleigh Town CouncilCOVID-19 updateAt the time of going to print (first week of August), there are no local cases of Coronavirus. As summer holidays continue, there will be more movement of people and the chances of the disease spreading again will increase. So please continue to take care and look out for the well-being of yourselves and others. There are still people who for health reasons are staying out of shops, though emergency government support for the most vulnerable finishes at the end of July. We also know that there are people whose income has been badly hit by the crisis. For these reasons we are keeping the Buckfastleigh Response team running, though in lower gear. The helpline is now open from 9:30-1:30, Mon to Fri on 01364 255 819. Please do not hesitate to call and talk to one of our wonderful volunteers if you need anything. The Town Hall will begin reopening in stages in August/September when we have full safety measures in place, so that activities such as meetings can once again take place and we can see a phased return of the Library service.Thank you

I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who has volunteered their help in recent months. I cannot express just how much I valued getting the opportunity to do such important work with such a wonderful team. I think that there is nothing more rewarding than working together in a team for an important cause. You can be proud of your contribution – together we kept our friends and neighbours safe and saved lives. Almost as significant, we have made steps toward building a more supportive and better connected community.

The Mobile Share Shed comes to BuckfastleighThe Share Shed is a library of things. People can borrow items that they don’t use regularly, and consequently save money, space and resources. Popular items include carpet cleaners, pressure washers, electric drills, strimmers, and sewing machines, but there are other, more unusual things available….. Mayor Andy Stokes borrowed a unicycle!

Originally based in Totnes, the Share Shed now has a specially converted van so it can visit other towns. It is currently stopping in two different locations in Buckfastleigh on Saturdays: from 10am to 11.30am by the Rangers Football & Social Club, and from 12 to 1.30pm at the Victoria Woodholme Car Park. It also stops on Fridays at Ashburton Arts from 1pm to 3.30 and at the Old School Community Centre South Brent from 10am to 12.You can join the Share Shed by paying a membership fee (sliding scale between £5 and £30), and place reservations online or in person. To see everything the library of things currently offers, visit www.shareshed.org.uk or email [email protected].

ANYONE FOR CRICKET?For a small community Buckfastleigh is really sporty, with an active Rugby, Football and Cricket Club.Buckfastleigh Cricket Club was formed in 1863, the same year as the Mid Devon Advertiser. This is a social club, with local players, but in the 1960s they won the Devon Premier League, and had several overseas players including Basil D’Oliveira.Today, it is not a league side but they are a great group of friendly players who make everyone welcome. Over the last few weeks they got together, social distancing in Old Millenium Green in order to keep the club spirit going, and they have also had some practice sessions, never more than 5 players, a V shaped net and again social distancing was observed.

Cricket, I always feel is such a quintessentially English sport, really beginning in the South East of England in the 16th century, it became a national sport in the 18th century and then a global sport in the 19th & 20th centuries, with the first international game being played in 1844. I remember, (hate to admit how old I am but…) when one day cricket started to be played and I became interested in the sport. I have shivered and got wet standing on the sidelines watching Jack, my grandson play rugby, what you do for love! But what could be more wonderful and relaxing

than to sit in a deck chair, on a sunny afternoon, watching cricket, and for me personally it would be accompanied by a glass of Pimms and maybe even strawberries and cream.Buckfastleigh has the most stunning pitch, the 360 degree views are mind blowing. When I discovered the Buckfastleigh club, I was so pleased with the welcome I received from the players. The club is not demanding of its players, there is a great understanding if a player cannot make every match or every practice. The club would love to welcome and encourage younger players, over 18, and I cannot imagine they would not enjoy it. This year’s captain is Harry Laity and the Vice-Captain, Andy Bullard. They practice principally on Monday evenings (6-8pm) at their beautiful site. Please, people of Buckfastleigh, come and support your cricket team.

Do you want a Green Recovery?I’ve spent lockdown working from home, but I’ve never worked harder or under more trying conditions. Seeing how coronavirus has impacted peoples’ lives, livelihoods, relationships and wellbeing has been difficult for us all, and the road ahead is still fraught with danger. One thing is absolutely clear though. When we do emerge from the pandemic, an even greater threat remains - the climate and natuire emergency. Why greater? Because the very life support systems of the planet, for humanity, are at risk. But I have been heartened, indeed amazed, at how the changes to peoples’ lives have provoked a wholesale re-assessment of the “normal” world we left behind. As skies and roads cleared, we’ve walked more, cycled more, grown veg, valued our food more, wasted less. And nature has been there, giving solace to people all over the country. At the RSPB, we’ve seen unprecedented interest in nature. You’ve been telling us how you’ve noticed and appreciated birdsong more, what you’ve been seeing on your daily exercise, the nature around your homes and communities. From Chris Packham’s Self Isolating bird club to Springwatch, you’ve been sharing your experiences and nature encounters with others.I’ve really valued the amazing countryside we have around us here in Ashburton. Even though I couldn’t get up onto Dartmoor, the local paths and tracks have provided many new wildlife encounters - a red kite flying over, a hobby hawking after swallows, a fox leaping into long grass hunting mice. There are big benefits: I certainly don’t miss the daily commute to Exeter… less stress, less expense, more time for me and my family. Less carbon too, so better for the planet. And I’ve been amazed at how our community and businesses here in Ashburton have rallied together!

So do other people want to go back to the old “normal”? Here there appears to be a resounding “no”. How do we know? Our Recovering Together survey asked people about their views on nature during and in the recovery from the pandemic. The results were staggering. People told us they:

• overwhelmingly support protecting and investing in nature, and increasing accessible natural greenspace as part of our recovery from Coronavirus (over 8 out of 10 people); • strongly oppose the UK Government reducing spending on nature or putting less emphasis on protecting nature;• and see nature as important for health and wellbeing and access to nature close to home as beneficial during the Coronavirus crisis.

But with a recession looming, isn’t nature a luxury? Not according to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) report published in July, which estimates a nature-led coronavirus recovery could be worth $10 trillion dollars to the global economy, and create 400 million jobs. Politicians are grappling with how to get us out of this mess. There is a temptation to go back to the old normal for answers. We must not do that. We’d be mad to do that. It’s not like we have a choice… as the WEF said, “there are no jobs on a dead planet”. Look after nature, and it will look after us.

A STORYBy Chris Moore

He was riding hard and kept looking behind him for his persuaders. There were no signs of them. He had shaken them off. He was, after all, in familiar territory on Dartmoor, having been raised in a farmhouse near East Budleigh and learned to ride at a very early age. He brought his mount down to a trot and thought “I can’t run forever, I must find refuge for a few nights”. He was looking into a valley where the town of Aysheberton lay.“I know the landlord of the Exeter Inn, he might be able to help me”.As he came to a halt outside the inn he noticed that stone masons were still working on the church of Saint Andrews opposite, even though it was re-built a hundred years ago after a fire.“I suppose a church is never finished,” he pondered. As he dismounted the ostler from the inn came out through the front door.“Ah, Pipin,” he said, “Give her some oats and a drink and a good rub down. I have been riding her hard”.“As you wish,” Pipin replied and led his horse through the middle of the inn to the stable yard at the back. As soon as he walked in he was greeted by the Landlord, Elfric.“Sir Walter, what a pleasure to see you again.”Elfric was a stocky man built like an ox. He was virtually bald on top but sporting a fine pair of mutton chop sideburns of a vague ginger colour. He was wearing a smock that looked well overdue for the wash tub, leather breeches and a well worn leather apron.“A tankard of your ale please Elfric, I haven't broken my fast yet, so some bread and cheese would be appreciated. I will take a place by the fire.” said Sir Walter Raleigh. The parlour was dim with dark wood panels on the walls and there were sconces around the walls with the stubs of last night’s candles

still in them. The room was furnished with rough oak tables and settles set around the edges, many of them already occupied. There was a serving hatch at the back of the room.Elfric did not brew his own beer as there wasn’t space for brewing. Instead he purchased it from the Thompson family who were running the London Inn just one hundred paces from his inn. It was a fine ale and he could easily collect a barrel in his hand cart. When Elfric came over to him with a foaming tankard of ale he spoke to him in hushed tones.“Would you have a room for me for a few days?” he asked.“Indeed I do,” Elfric replied, “The one at the back, overlooking the stable yard. I will get the chambermaid to prepare it for you right away.”“One more thing” he replied “You haven’t seen me if anyone asks. Be discreet.”“Understood Sir,” Elfric said and touching a long forgotten forelock, “You can rely on me”.

Moments later a woman with a ruddy face, lank hair and a greasy apron appeared with a platter of bread and cheese. She gave a small bob and departed.“Thank you,” he said as he settled himself at a table by the fireside. He soon demolished the bread and cheese so great was his hunger. He stood and selected a clay pipe from the mantle shelf and removed a leather pouch from his doublet and filled his pipe with tobah as he called it. He lit it from a taper from the fire and inhaled deeply. He thought to himself at least something good came out of the Roanoke Colony. He felt very relaxed as he inhaled once more. He took another drink from his tankard. How stupid he thought.“I fall in love with Bess Throgmorton, one of Elizabeth’s ladies-in-waiting and then marry her without the Queen’s permission. Mind you it wasn’t too awful in the Tower. I had Bess with me, a decent room with a comfortable bed and a writing desk, three meals a day and a view of the Thames. No bars on the window, it was too high up to consider jumping. And of course my son Carew was conceived and born in the Tower. I had served Elizabeth well though. After all, she knighted me, made me warden of the Stanneries, Captain of the Yeoman of the Guard and Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall. I brought much gold and riches to her Treasury, fought off the Spanish fleet, subdued the Irish situation and did a bit of spying for her and helped make a few colonies in the New World. Now I have gone and upset King James because my old friend Lawrence Keymis went and attacked the Spanish outpost of Santo Tomé de Guayana against my orders and violated the peace treaty between us and Spain and, damn it, my son was killed in the attack. This has turned King James against me. He even believes I am part of a plot to assassinate him!”There was a loud bark from outside and he, rudely awoken from his reveries, instinctively went to the pommel of his sword. A

deerhound bounded in and made straight for the fire where it lay down on the hearth. It was followed by a well dressed gentleman with a neatly trimmed beard, a superbly embroidered doublet and a fine pair of riding boots. The gentleman went straight to the serving hatch. He was followed by the Ostler leading a well groomed palfrey with expensive tack through to the stable yard at the back.“I hope he doesn’t come over here and try and make conversation”, he thought . “I'm not in the mood for it”.He needn’t have worried as the man was soon in conversation with a group of men at one of the larger tables and clearly enjoying a good joke. He looked down at the dog who was now on its back, rocking from side to side.“If you think I’m going to scratch your belly”, he thought, “you’ve got another think coming.”No one noticed a skinny man with a slight limp leave the inn and head towards the centre of town.“Elfric,” he called waving his empty tankard at him. Moments later Elfric arrived with a fresh ale. “Tell me Elfric, who is that gentleman just come in?”“Oh, he’s Mr Wilkinson,” Elfric replied, “He’s a landowner, lives at Mucksey Hall, farms round Poundsgate. He must be in town for some sort of sale”.Suddenly he was aware of the sound of marching feet heading towards the inn. Four soldiers entered carrying pikes, including the sergeant-at-arms no less. The sergeant walked up to him and said, “Sir Walter Raleigh, I am arresting you for treason in the name of King James. I am to take you to the Tower where you will await the King’s pleasure.”“Would you at least allow me to finish my ale before we go?” he said.“I think we can allow you that Sir,” replied the sergeant. “In fact I think we will join you. What do you say men?”“Aye.”

Can you help the Repair Café to start up again?

The Ashburton Repair Café very much wants to restart our activities again! In the past weeks so many items have accumulated in people’s homes which need fixing; we really don’t want them to be unnecessarily thrown into landfill. We can’t all get together just at the moment, although we will as soon as it’s practical to do so. Meanwhile we’ll start by asking you to take items to a local collection point and pick up the item from the same place when it’s fixed. But we don’t have “space” to do this. We need someone to give us use of a lock-up garage, an empty shop, a shed, an unused workshop – to restart our valuable service to the community enabling us to receive and quarantine items, then repair and return them. Can anyone help? If you’ve got somewhere which might be suitable or you know of someone who might be able to help, please let us know – call or text us on 07761 045146.

Please help us to get started again!

Virtual Launch of The Dartmoor Way Tuesday 8th September

Following on from the completion of the waymarking of the new Dartmoor Way walking trail, the route was to be formally launched at the end of May. Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we had to cancel this. So instead, we have decided to do a ‘Virtual Launch’ using our Facebook, and Instagram, @dartmoorway. This will start on Tuesday, 8th September with regular posts over the following 4 or 5 days. It’s planned to have articles, topics and video clips of many aspects of the route including a tour of the website (which will be live for this launch), features on local businesses that stand to benefit from the trail, Dartmoor do;s and dont’s, dog management, disabled access and many other subjects. This will be followed by regular posts about the route using our social media platforms throughout the Autumn and Winter.

We intend to re-schedule our Walking Festival for Saturday, 1st, Sunday, 2nd and Monday, 3rd May 2021. This will be over the early May Bank Holiday weekend. Details of this will become available on our website nearer the time. The Dartmoor Way team hopes you will be able to get out onto the route during the coming months and enjoy the great variety of scenery and lovely villages and towns that this new route passes through as it wends its way around the edge of Dartmoor.Further information available at:

As ever, circumstances create opportunities which the criminal element are quick to seize on. With the Lockdown giving quiet roads etc. rural crime has increased dramatically with the theft of all manner of farm machinery and livestock. The sale of pet dogs has also increased to such an extent that their prices have escalated, a Jack Russell now around £1000, Spaniels £2000 and Cockapoos and the like well over £2000. Of course the opportunity to steal an unattended pet has also increased, even from front gardens if no one is around, or dogs let loose on walks. The chip in your dog is of no use as it will be removed and replaced. There are more cyclists out and about and the theft of bicycles has also increased. Put your name and address in a card and slip it into your handle bars, mark it with a UV pen, or if a valuable bike get a DNA kit to mark it. This will all help to ID your bike if it is ever recovered. Scams of all kinds have increased from fake PPE equipment to false crowd funding sites. As ever be on your guard - any suspicious emails can be sent straight to: [email protected] all suspicious activity please report it to your local police team; it may well form part of a pattern which could help solve other crimes. Please stay vigilant online and particularly if you use Zoom; Which Computer magazine recently found this site to be insecure.

Ashburton U3A is still active during these times of lockdown and beyond, though we are not able to put on our regular monthly meetings or to hold many meetings of our Interest Groups. Some Groups are managing to meet using Zoom, or face-to-face if it is safe, and monthly meetings are likely to be held via Zoom until 2021. If anyone would like to try us out before joining, please contact the Membership Secretary, John Morris, by visiting our website for more information and contacts:

www.u3asites.org.uk/ashburton We should be delighted to see you!Our postponed AGM will take place on Tuesday 1st September via Zoom. Our planned Open Day this year will not now take place in October, but there will be a bumper occasion in June 2021.Stay safe, everyone!

As with most organisations our local Rotary has not been able to meet in person recently owing to the Covid restrictions. However, thanks to our Secretary, Diana Fitch, who set up a free zoom account, we have been meeting weekly via Zoom. It is not quite as enjoyable as sitting down to our delicious weekly meal at the Furzeleigh, but we sit around our computer screens, often with a cup of coffee, and talk to each other. We were all disappointed to have to cancel our annual concert and our Art Exhibition-Artex, held at Buckfast Abbey. It was not only disappointing to miss these very enjoyable events, but they were also major fund raisers for the club. However, we have received some generous donations, specifically to relieve organisations suffering as a result of Covid, and these are being used for that purpose. The Ashburton Covid 19 response team formed a group to make face masks, scrubs, head bands and scrub bags. When they ran out of materials they spoke with Philip Vogel who was the comms team leader and a Rotarian to see if Rotary could help. Their initial materials had cost them £500 and, with a separate donation from a member, Rotary was able to give them the £500 they required. Soon after this group began using their sewing skills, Buckfastleigh quilters also put their nimble fingers to use and began making scrubs for the NHS and in particular our local Torbay hospital. The project was low cost as they innovatively used donated duvet covers and sheets. It is fun when you see them being worn. Despite materials being donated there was still a need for money for cottons, sewing machine needles, drawstrings etc. A proportion of the quilters were staying at home during lockdown, so they also saw a benefit to themselves, giving a focus to their days and a feeling of satisfaction that they were being able to contribute to helping the NHS, as did the people who were able to donate the duvets etc.Whilst Covid 19 has affected us all in different ways it has engendered an almost wartime spirit of pulling together. During this time Rotary was still able to donate dictionaries to school leavers as it has done in previous years and make other donations to groups they have previously supportedDates have been booked for events for 2021, so let us hope things will have improved so these can be held.Belonging to Rotary, not only gives one a pleasure to be able to help different groups of people, but is also a terrific group of people to belong to. I always look forward to our weekly get -togethers. You would find a large WELCOME if you would like to join this happy band. Please contact Diana Fitch on [email protected]

When the giants had been driven out by Brutus, many made their home on Dartmoor while the rest fled even further, into Cornwall. One of those who settled on Dartmoor was Giant Blunderbus, who settled on Dinger Tor.As was the custom among giants, Blunderbus had more than one wife, four to be exact. Of these wives Blunderbus had one particular favourite, Jennie the youngest who was beautiful, kind and loving, but who, unfortunately, had never learned to cook. Blunderbus loved his young wife and used to sit and talk with her and bring her presents. Now the other three wives, who had never ever been of a particularly pleasant disposition, were, quite naturally, jealous of Jennie and decided to make life difficult for her. They gave her all the difficult and dirty jobs, making her work from early in the morning till late at night fetching water, lighting the fire, cleaning the pots and pans and doing all the nasty jobs they could think of. In spite of all this Jennie still remained cheerful. As long as she could be with her beloved Blunderbus she was happy. This did not suit the other three wives, they decided to make life as uncomfortable as possible for Blunderbus until he got rid of his favourite. They burnt his food, made sure his bed was lumpy, refused to keep his clothes clean and nagged him from morning till night, until at last, tired, dirty and suffering from indigestion he gave in and promised to get rid of Jennie. He could not let her go completely so he installed her in a cave on the Cornish cliffs where he could visit her secretly as often as he could escape from his other wives, but both he and Jennie were sad at their parting. One day, while Jennie was sitting quietly weeping in her cave, she heard voices outside on the rocks below. Making sure not to be seen or heard, she carefully looked out of her cave and saw a group of fierce looking men and, overhearing their conversation, found out that they were plotting to wreck a ship. They were Cornish wreckers.Jennie was terrified, her first thought was for her own safety, then she thought of the poor sailors who might lose their lives and decided she must do something even if it meant putting herself in danger. That night she saw the wreckers leading a hobbled donkey with a lantern attached to his saddle along the cliff tops. This is an old wreckers ruse to make ships think that there is another ship and that there is plenty of deep water inshore. Horrified, Jennie

saw the lights of the ship turning and heading towards the treacherous rocks below her cave. Frantically she heaped up bushwood and driftwood and, striking a flame, set them alight. The ship realising the danger dropped anchor and sent a boat inshore to investigate. The wreckers, furious at losing their prey, were hunting for Jennie when they were overtaken by the sailors and slain without mercy. The captain of the ship, a Phoenician, thanked Jennie and asked her what he could do for her in return. Jennie, happy at last to have someone to talk to, told all her troubles to the Phoenician captain who listened sympathetically. Now the captain realised that, though Blunderbus deserved his fate for not standing up to his wives, Jennie would only be happy if she were reunited with her beloved Blunderbus. “My dear,” he said, “I have a recipe for the most wonderful food you have ever tasted. I will teach you how to make this and once Blunderbus has tasted it, he will never let you leave his side again”.The recipe was for clotted cream or clouted cream as it was then called. On Blunderbus’s next visit Jennie fed him some of this wonderful new food. Blunderbus was amazed and delighted with his clever young wife, and immediately took her back with him to Dinger Tor.The other wives were annoyed at first, but on tasting this delicious new food welcomed Jennie back and entreated her to show them how to make it. Jennie showed them, and eventually the fame of this clouted cream spread. People came from all over Devon to learn about the new food and how to make it. The three wives were happy to be so important and sought after, and spent their days teaching the many visitors how to make clouted cream.Meanwhile Blunderbus and Jennie were able to live happily together free from indigestion and from the envy of the other three wives.Devon is still famous for clotted cream, so the next time you enjoy one of our famous cream teas, remember you owe it all to Jennie the lovely young wife of Blunderbus of Dinger Tor.
