Fasting has revolutionized my relationship with the Lord.

I imagine you got this book by signing up for it on the website or because it was recommended to you by afriend. In any case thank you for stopping by, I pray that you are blessed by the content.

If you are reading this it must be because you find yourself in the same position that I found myself in notmore than 5 years ago at the writing to this book. I was becoming increasingly more curious about fasting andjust wanted more information so that I would feel comfortable engaging in one. The problem was that Icouldnt find any one book or website that could answer most of the questions I had.

Once I did all my research I was ready to get started, but I found that many people were just as confusedabout the topic of fasting as I used to be. As I spoke with people who had been followers of Jesus for years, seminary graduates, ministry leaders and the like, it became clear that even the most educated Christianmay not know about fasting. Over the years Ive seen God move through the fasting of His people in amazingways. Ive been witness to the healing of diseases, financial recovery, mending of relationships, and even therecovery of life to person declared dead by doctors. YES, Ive born witness to the resurrection of the deadthrough a fast.

After seeing all these miraculous works of fasting and knowing that much of the body of Christ is ignorant toits power, I knew I had to do something. Thats when the Understand Fasting blogwas born. This free guideis just my way of helping the body of Christ draw closer to the Lord and see the amazing power of fastingthat

    God has shown me.

I pray this information is as much of a blessing to youas it has been to me.

    1. The Importanceof Setting FastingGuidelines

The basic reason for this isthatwe have to set a vision forour fasts, otherwise we will notrestrain ourselves for long. Severaltimes I have made the grave errorof not setting ground rules for myfasts and as a result failed infasting miserably. I had noguidelines and no direction andinvariably I ended up in the sameplace I started.

    Plan Your Fast

When I didnt set any criteriato uphold from the outset, myflesh was not really brought intosubjectionto any measurablestandard. At any point during the

fast I could change the types offood I ate, and even stop the fastcompletely if I really wanted to,because I hadnt set any type offood restriction or a determinednumber of days I would fast for.

In my experience these are themost ineffective types of fasts thatyou can engage in. We must setsome goals to focus on, so thatwestay focused. Strangelyenough, In order to do this we

need to apply the same trainingtechniques used to keep racehorses looking toward the finishline. We must engage in thepractice of usingblinders todirect our vision while we fast.Let

    me explain.

    Wearing Blinders

In the scientific communityhorses are often categorized as

flight animals, meaning they dontreally have any fearsome defense

mechanisms to put into play whentheyre attacked. They dont havevenom, sharp teeth, or claws. Forthe most part all they can do whenattacked is run away or take flight. For this reason our creatorequipped them with eyes thathave amazingly wide peripheralvision.

Unlike humans, their eyes aresituated on the sides of their headsto allow for a greater range of sightin order to see danger comingfrom almost any angle. Whilethis is great for avoidingdanger in the wild, its a hugedisadvantage when it comes tomaking this animal focus itssight forward when working(pulling a carriage, racing, orplowing).

Horse trainers and ridersknow this all to well, but they have

found a way to harness thisapparent weakness. Because of ahorses aptitude for distraction, the trainers require the horseswear blinders. They place a set ofgoggles on the horse that onlyallow them to see whats aheadand not whats on their sides.

For us, this principleis no different.Justlike the horses, we

need guidelines andstandards to act asour blinders andkeep us lookingforward in our

fasting efforts. If we dont setstandards for our fasting we

wont have a finish line tofocus on. We will inevitably be

diverted offcourse, because therewas no defined course of actionanyway. Without guidelines in ourfasting we are setting ourselves upfor distraction and eventuallyfailure.

    Settingstandards forthe foods you

    will consume,the people you

will involve inthe fast, and the length of time arecrucial to the success of yourfasting. If you have no set visionfor your fast you will beunrestrained(Proverbs 29:18

    NASB).

Set some guidelines even ifthey are somewhat flexible. Themain ways to establish theseguidelines are through choosing

the number of days, the type ofdietary restrictions, and whetherto make your fast corporate orpersonal. These guidelines willkeep you on track to finish whatyou have started, and finish well.

Scripture provides quite a fewfasting variations as it concernsthe combination of length, diet, and inclusion of partners. As wetake a look at some of theseexamples, you should begin to getan idea of what type of fast youbelieve the Lord is calling you to.Lets start with choosing just howlong our fast will be.

Where there is no vision thepeople are unrestrained, but

happy is he who keeps the law -Proverbs 29:18 (NASB)

2.Determine HowLong The FastWill Be?Pick a Number One through Ten

In the majority of my jobs overthe years Ive usually been giventhe task of working with childrenand teens. When doing this one ofthe widely accepted ways toeliminate bias when selecting a kidto participate in an activity orreceive a reward, is to have theeligible children pick a number, one through ten. Weve all donethat, and while it may be a quick

resolution to picking favoritesamong children, its not the way tochoose the length of your fast. Youdont just want to pick a randomnumber of days.

Interestingly, there are only afew different lengths of timeassociated with fasting inscripture. They varied in terms ofbeing long term, medium, or shortterm. For example, althoughfasting is recorded several times inscripture, it is only recorded asbeing done in one of six distinctlengths of time; where the lengthis noted.

In each of the different fastslisted here, the person or personsengaged in the fasts had specificreasons for fasting. Lets identifysome of those fasts, their reasonsfor fasting, how long they fastedand their application to our lives.

    One Day Fasts:

In two of these cases thefast was done to seekGods forgiveness for their

sins, and to humble themselvesbefore Him. Although we haveforgiveness through the blood of

Jesus, we can still return to Godby humbling our mind, will, andemotions through fasting.

    Three Day Fasts:

    These fasts were embarked on

for totally different reasons. In thecase of Esther she and her peoplewere seeking God to give themfavor with the ruling king of theirday to spare their lives fromgenocide. Paul in Acts 9:9 wasfasting after his conversion to faithin Jesus, and as a result receivedthe revelation of His divine callingand the filling of the Holy Spirit.

    Seven Day Fasts:

In both instances thefasting was done inresponse to some sort of

sin issue. The valiant men ofJabesh-gilead fasted after thedeath of king Saul, who diedbecause of his rebellion againstGod.

David fasted for the healing ofhis son that was born through hisadulterous relationship with

Bathsheba, although God did notdo as he requested. This is perhapsthe only place in scripture wherefasting did not result in theresponse the person sought.

    Ten Day Fasts:

The prophet Daniel did notwant to defile his body before theLord by eating the kings food thatwas unlawful for him to eataccording to Jewish custom. He

refrained from that food for tendays while God kept his bodyhealthy in appearance andfunction the entire time.

    Twenty-one Day Fasts:

Daniel again fasted to receivewisdom from the Lord concerningthe interpretation of a vision of

the future. Although God heardthe prayer of Daniel from the firstday, the answer did not come untillater because of spiritual warfarethat was going on during thetwenty one days.

    Forty Day Fasts:

Forty day fasting has similartraits throughout scripture. Ineach case it is done by a singleindividual and the person engagedin the fast is directly touched byGod in some way, resulting in theestablishment of the Kingdom ofGod through them, in a new wayand powerful way. Moses, Elijah,

and Jesus are all recorded ashaving completed 40 day fasts.

Your fast is not supposed tobe a ridged legalistic adherence toany particular method. Itsdesigned to make you flexibleenough to receive what Godwants to give you. Choose aparticular time frame and stickwith it. These suggested lengthsare a great place to start.

    3. Decide Which Type ofFast Is Right For You?

Earlier in the book we covered the different

types of dietary restrictions that you can choosefrom. Its up to you to determine which one you havethe stomach for. Some people simply dont havethe faith or mental endurance to attempt a forty dayfast, a twenty-one day juice fast, or even a three daycomplete fast. You have to fast according to whereyour faith is, and what you are willing to stick to, no

matter what. In order to do this Gods revelationmust become more necessary to you than food.

Here is a review of the the types of fasts that youcan choose from, the various biblical personalitiesthat did them, as well as what to expect physically

from their impact on your body.

Congrats!! Youve Made it Halfway Through the Book

First of all, THANK YOU!! I pray this stuffhas been helpful to you. Only 3sections to go.- Take a break for a second and think about what God may bespeaking to you...then like us on Facebook and follow us onTwitter (shamelessright, LOL!?). In the next section well discuss Personal vs Corporate Fasting

I did not eat any tasty food, nordid meat or wine enter my mouth, nor did I use any ointment at alluntil the entire three weeks werecompleted. - Daniel 10:3 NASB

    Complete Fasts:Luke 4:2 (Jesus), Deuteronomy 9:9-18(Moses), 1 Kings 19:8 (Elijah), Esther4:16 (Corporate Jewish Fast)

The complete fast the mostcommon form of fastingdescribed in scripture. Theparticipants are recorded aseating and drinkingnothing.

These fasts are done at varyinglengths. They are recorded asbeing as short as one day and aslong as forty. Typically modernday participants of this form offasting will drink water as a partof their fasting regimen.

    Three Popular Types of Fasts

    Juice Fasts:Not found in Scripture

Juicing is not mentioned inscripture and is used as a hybridof a complete fast and a partialfast. This fasting allows for theparticipants to continue tointake sources of energy andnutrients, while stillmaintaining the sense of

    hunger.Juice fasts are a reasonable

alternative to long termcomplete fasts for people withan active lifestyle, however theLord will sustain you throughwhatever type of fast He callsyou to do. If he calls for acomplete fast, dont do a juicefast just because its easier.

If you are thinking aboutjuicing I recommend using theBreville BJE200XLjuicer.

    Partial Fasts:Daniel 10:2, 3 (Daniel)

Partial fastingis refrainingfrom certain types of foods fora given period of time. Thistype of fast is recorded in thebook of Daniel. He refrainedfrom eating tasty/pleasantfood, meat, and drinking wine.Pleasant food is typically

thought to be sweet and sugaryfoods. This is where the termDaniel Fast originates.

Planning for this type offast can help us detoxify ourbodies, and not miss mealsduring the fast because we haveto refrain from eating the foodthats available while we are onthe go. This often requirespacking a lunch, and planningyour meals well in advance

during the course of your fast.

    Maybe the BiggestMisconception is that

    You Cant Tell Anybody

The passage of scripture(Matthew 6:17 NASB) has oftenbeen misinterpreted in such a waythat believers have been rebukedfor fasting in any manner whereother people may take notice of it,or become aware of their fasting.

The implications are that ifanyone finds out about your fastthen your fasting is completelynullified in the eyes of Godbecause you have your reward. This is not the intendedmessage of Jesus as He spoke

    those words.

Whether fasting is done byan individual or by a group ofpeople, the key is that it shouldbe an act carried out in humility.Fasting with the specific purposeof being seen by others to behonored by them is an act ofpride. However, fasting in apublic way that focuses attention

on the glory of God is notprohibited.

You can fast and let peopleknow about it if your intentionsare to encourage those that arewatching you. It is still commonpractice to keep our fastingefforts confidential among the

    participants of the fast itself.

To reiterate, its perfectly ok ifsomeone finds out that you are

fasting. If someone asks you if youare fasting you dont have toconceal the fact that you are. Youcan tell them you are fasting withno shame or apprehension aboutthe consequences you may incurfrom God, because if you arepure in your motives there are no

    negative consequences.

The difference betweenpersonal and corporate (group)fasting is a little more than

simply whether or not to letother people know that you arefasting. It is including others inthe participation of your fast, orjoining yourself to another groupor individual that is going to fast.

Determining if you are going toengage in an personal or corporatefast is really a matter of thespecific issue which you are fasting

for, if others are directly affectedby that issue, and if you havesomeone that will join you inprayer agreement on the issue

    (Matthew 18:19).

Fasting done by individuals inscripture was undertaken by thosethat were seeking a very personalresponse from the Lord. Usually

they were humbling themselves inlight of a distinctively pressingburden that they carried. Thisburden weighed on them morethan their peers, fellowcountryman, or families. The issuethat necessitated their fasting wasremarkably heavy on their heart. So, they took it to the throne ofthe King themselves.

    4. Choosing a Personal Fast or a Corporate Fast?

But you, when you fast, anointyour head and wash your face sothat your fasting will not be

noticed by men, but by yourFather who is in secret; and yourFather who sees what is done insecret will reward you.- Matthew 6:17 (NASB)

Remember that the fast is what God uses toalign us with His motivations and will.We havea tendency to view fasting as the reverse; wethink we are getting God to align Himself with

our desires. This is simply not true.Think about it like this, guidelines help create

boundaries that produce proper alignment. This iswhy we must allow Holy Spirit to establish ourboundaries because only He truly knows what isneeded to produce the alignment that will causeus to be in sync with the will of God. Lets pray.

Dear Heavenly Father, you are the author andfinisher of a"life. I ask for your wisdom to establishguidelines for my fasting. I ask that I walk in yourgrace to adhere to those guidelines. Show me the number

of days, diet restrictions, and who I should include orexclude#om my fasts. Help me identify the root issuesthat I need to fast for or against. Change me in myfasting Father, move in my being and a"ow me to alignwith your righteousness in every way. In the name ofJesus I ask a"these things, AMEN.

For each of us the sacrificein this area may be diferent.Maybe for you its music, foranother it may be video games, while for some it may be thesacrifice of social media. In anycase, what you should sacrifice islikely the thing that you are most

hesitant to sacrifice. It is likely thething that hurts even to imaginegoing without it.

Even if you feel as if you havegood balance in this area, your faststill provides for a period ofdeeper self-reflection. Thesacrifice of necessary food for thebody is made so that our spirits

can be keenly aware of thatspiritual food which is even morenecessary, the voice of God.

In the case of King Darius inthe book of Daniel, he retired tohis palace and denied himself hisnormal forms of entertainmentthat he was accustomed to. In

modern terms he would haveturned offthe TV, silencedhis cell phone, kept hislaptop closed, and putdown that mystery novel. He completely dedicatedhis attention to fasting andprayer.

If you normally watchtelevision, consider turning it offfor the duration of your fast. Ifyou are into social media, let yournetwork know that you are takinga sabbatical from them for a fewdays. I promiseyou wont die, buthopefully the desires of the flesh

    will.

Along with food, also consider giving up these things as well

    5. Eliminate Good Things That Can Be DistractionsDaily aspects of our lives such as smart phones, facebook, internet surfing, and even watching hours of

television are luxuries that can be considered good things under the right circumstances. But, often when we are

fasting, some of these things can actually serve as distractions from focusing on the voice of God.

Then the king went off to hispalace and spent the night fasting, and no entertainment was broughtbefore him; and his sleep fled fromhim Daniel 6:18 (NASB)

    6. Know YourLevel of Faith

In his desperate conversationwith Jesus, the man in the

scripture below was pleading forthe freedom of his son fromdemonic attacks.

He had exhausted everyoption that he knew of. He evenbrought his son to Jesus discipleswho then failed to cast the demonout. Imagine the mans emotionalstate when bringing the boy to themen who were becomingrenowned for the miraculousworks of God that were followingthem wherever they went. Thinkhow disheartened he must have

been after their failed attempt toheal his son.

The boy had been possessedand tormented by this demonsince early childhood and hisfather was powerless to stop it.The man must have felt a mix ofemotions that ranged fromfrustration and bitterness, tohelplessness, and finally landedhim in a state of unbelief. Beforewe jump to judge this man it mustbe noted that at least he realizedhis lack of faith and decided to dosomething about it. He tookaction to combat his unbelief byrequesting Jesus help to increasehis faith, and by making a personaldeclaration of a new level of faithby declaring, I do believe.

As it concerns fasting, wemust be careful not to put moreon ourselves than our own faithcan bare. Our initial reaction tothe inner unction, or corporatecall to fast may cause us to leantoward an extreme fast when inreality our faith is not able to bare

that sort of load. Forexample, we mayattempt a twenty-oneday fast only to findourselves not able tocomplete it because ourfaith didnt match ourconviction. We must beaware of not only what

we are willing toattempt, but what weare dedicated to sustain andcomplete.

    The Failed Fast

A failed fast can be one ofthe most demoralizingexperiences that a believer inChrist can have, especially a newbeliever. Consider that a fast istypically undertaken either in

response to a deep burden or to anextreme circumstance faced by anindividual or group of people. If aperson is a new believer, and isresponding to the call to fast, theymay be fasting for the first timeand the fast itself may be theirfirst attempted outward act offaith since praying for salvation.

Often, well intentionedleaders in the body of Christ(pastors, teachers, small group

leaders, etc.) will call for corporatefasts for the ones they are leading. The problem arises when therestrictions placed on thoseinvolved are too difficult simplybecause their followers may notpossess the faith level to endurethe type of fast that is proposed.

I believe this is the veryreason that forty day fasts inscripture are only undertaken byindividuals. If people enter aprolonged fast moved withemotion and under the convictionof the their leaders alone, they willfail at some point because they arenot acting in true faith, they areacting under the belief of anotherperson.

    A New Level of Faith

This doesnt meanthat in fasting weshouldnt attempt anew level ofspiritual extensionthat we may not

have attempted before; we shouldcontinue to grow in our fasts. Itdoes mean, however, that theguidelines placed on ourselves andthose fasting with us, shouldnt bebeyond the realm of belief forthose fasting. The restrictions andtime allotted for fasting shouldseem difficult, but notimpossibleunless you can believe

for the impossible. We must use our own faith

and enter our fasts with a heart ofcourage and not fear, of faith andnot unbelief. We must be willingto not only count the costs of ourfasts but to believe that we canendure them through the grace ofGod. Our faith should be in Godnot only to supply that which weare fasting for, but also to sustainus during the process. Fasting is a

righteous action that awaits the anexpected reward based on faith. Itis completely an exercise in faith.Allow your fasting to grow andexpand your expectations of theLord, as well as increase yourexpectations of His power to keepyou during the process.

But if you can do anything, takepity on us and help us! And Jesus saidto him, if you can? All things arepossible to him who believes.Immediately the boys father cried outand said, I do believe; help myunbelief. - Mark 9:22-24 (NASB)

    7. Do It & Teach ItWe have covered many topics

in this book. Some of which youmay still be wrestling through inour own thought processes. You

could read multiple books on thesubject of fasting, and I invite youto, but the power and revelation ofthis biblically mandated righteouswork of fasting(Matthew 6) willonly be experienced throughparticipation. You can search theworld over and find no work ofliterature that accurately depictsthe pain and pleasure, bitternessand sweetness of what Godprovides through a well conducted

    fast. It is truly indescribable.

    You Are Responsible

The things that you havelearned here are not to be simplymeditated upon. The revelationthat God gave you, and truth thatHoly Spirit revealed to you are notyours alone. They are to be shared. It is now up to you to take whatyou have learned, apply it, andteach it to others who are hungryto know what scripture teachesabout the power of fasting.

    What now?

Take your new understandingof the discipline of fasting and useit. As you do, the Lord will revealmore and more ofHimself to you, creating a deeperhunger for Histruths, and a morepassionate desireto see Him movein a miraculousway. Step out infaith.
