FOR THE LOVE OF WATERWe are glad to be back after a wonderful December break shared with visiting family. We hope you enjoyed your holidays and feel refreshed for the year ahead.

By now, I am sure we are all aware of the dire situation of our dam levels in the Western Cape. On 23 January overall storage of our dams stood at 40.4%. You may think that that doesn't sound too bad, but consider that the levels are currently going down about 2% per week and the last 10% of water in a dam is almost unusable as it is mostly mud. That means that in 15 weeks we could effectively run out of water unless substantial rain falls in the late portion of summer.

Thinking further ahead, if we do not receive higher than average rain this winter, it will leave us in an even worse postion next summer as the dams are already about 8.5% lower than they were at this time last year. Everybody really does need to do all they can to conserve every last drop, not just now, but probably for the next two years as well. With the rapid population growth in the Greater Cape Town area and uncertain weather patterns, water conservation will need to become a permanent habit in our daily lives.

Have a look at the article on page 10 which has a sobering picture of the Theewaterskloof Dam which accounts for over half of our water supply on its own. This major dam currently stands at only 35.2% full. We are fairly regular visitors to this dam and remember when there was absolutely no beach to be seen when it was full, a mere two years ago.

You can also read more about the new stricter Level 3b Water Restrictions which come into force on 1 Feb 2017 in the article on page 10.

We wish all our readers a wonderful (and wet) 2017.

Max Schutte

The Black Sparrowhawk was considered a rarity in the Western Cape, until the spread of timber plantations (providing ideal nesting sites). Also, the abundance of pigeons and doves, their main prey, encouraged the Black Sparrowhawks into the south-western parts of the country, from the forests further north. In Cape Town, they are now one of the most common raptors, with several breeding pairs scattered across the city’s green belts. They are distinctive, almost entirely black birds with a long tail and a varying degree of white on the throat and chest.Image: Pinelander Linda Sumner.

“I am extremely pleased and excited to let you know that I am back in Thornton. After a short absence since 2016, I am now working for a very successful, reputable and well-known brand, Seeff Pinelands. My decision to join the Seeff family was easy as the company stands for the values and ethics that I strive to embody. Those that know me can attest to the fact that I operate with integrity and honesty, first and foremost.I have been in the Real Estate industry for many years, and have been selling in the Thornton area since 2013. I bring an excellent reputation for service and follow up with a solid foundation of satisfied clients, many of whom I still remain in contact with.”

“From day one, both Kathy and Julie have been very professional in

the way that they managed the sales process. I was always informed

as to what was happening and they also provided the necessary

information that a seller needs for the difficult process of selling

a house. Having a locally based agency was a great help as I could

call on them at any time to pop around to the house to discuss issues

that needed attention. One day when I return to Pinelands I will not

hesitate to use Seeff again.” - Hashiem Bardien

We were delighted to welcome no less than five families to their new homes in December 2016, having concluded successful sales for them. Our agents completed sales of over R20m for the months of November and December 2016 and achieved some notable successes.

A home in Riverside sold for R5.300m, in Days Walk for R4.250m, in Dagbreek for R3.800m and in Margaret Ave for R3.700m. There were also three Sectional Title sales, two in Riverplace Mews for R1.600m and a lovely apartment in Kindroggen for R1.875. Sectional Title prices will continue to escalate this year due to a shortage in the affordable housing market.

We are heartened by the positive comments from our clients about our service and value added, and invite prospective buyers and sellers to make use of our services.

The PSCP Committee are very pleased and proud to confirm that PSCP phase 1 has now been handed over officially to PSCP from Pinewatch. On the 12th January 2017 at Pinewatch Place in

Maitland, the PSCP committee met with Pinewatch management to witness the signing and hand over of the first phase of the PSCP project and at the same time the SLA (Service Level Agreement) was signed. This means that as per the original agreement, Pinewatch will be managing the operation and maintenance of the installed system for the next 3 years, as of 1st January 2017. At the end of this three year period the operation and maintenance arrangement (SLA) will have to be re-negotiated.PSCP now essentially owns the installed system hardware (cameras, poles, antennae, etc.) located outside of Pinewatch Place, which has been operational for a few months now, while undergoing tests and adjustments, and in some places receiving additional installations to cover unintended “gaps” in coverage. We note with thanks that Pinewatch have shown their generosity and commitment toward the successful conclusion of this phase. We, all Pinelands residents and businesses and visitors, really owe a huge THANK YOU to all the kind and generous donors who believed that a project like this was needed and who “opened their purses” so long ago in May 2014, to make it happen.

FUNDING FOR PHASE 2This now officially marks the start of the next phase “phase 2”. We urgently need to get funds as quickly as possible in order to install the much needed PTZ (Pan, tilt, zoom) surveillance cameras in certain “hotspots” in Pinelands.PSCP is a registered NPC reg. # 2015/091736/08. DROUGHT!!What does it mean to you? Have a look at the wide dry beaches forming on the Theewaterskloof Dam - the largest dam supplying water to Cape Town. It is frightening to see the water shrinking to the middle of this vast area.

LEVEL 3b WATER RESTRICTIONS TO BE IMPLEMENTED 1ST FEBRUARY 2017• On 1 February 2016 the City Council will

implement level 3b water restrictions. Watering or irrigation (with municipal drinking water) of flower beds, lawns, vegetables and other plants, sports fields, parks and other open spaces will only be allowed on Tuesdays and Saturdays before 9am or after 6pm for a maximum of one hour per day per property, and only if using a bucket or watering can.

• No watering or irrigation will be allowed within 48 hours of rainfall that would provide adequate saturation.

• No washing of vehicles or boats using municipal drinking water will be allowed. Vehicles and boats must be washed with non-potable water or washed at a commercial car wash.

The community of Cape Town needs to pull

together to preserve the water resources still available to us. Every effort needs to be made to use less water. It is no good saying "I can afford the higher cost and will therefore use as much water as I like". Well, it would be more than a bit awkward to have barrel loads of money and no water to buy with it!

GREY WATERPut alternative measures in place such as re-routing grey water from showers, and the washing machine to the garden. Reduce water usage by taking shorter showers and lathering up while the water is off and then running the shower to rinse

the soap off. Implement the Drop the Block campaign by putting a weighted plastic container into the toilet cistern to reduce the amount of water used per flush.

SIGNAGERemember to display your signage for grey water, well point and harvested rainwater.

Picnic hamper in hand we joined the stream of people going to see Crocodile Dundee - the outdoor movie for the night at Kirstenbosch Gardens. We collected our Galileo chairs with comfy backrests, and our blankets and made our way to the patch of lawn in front of the big screen. There was a holiday feel to the gathering crowd - Crocodile Dundee look-a-likes vying for attention; and the children taking advantage of the organised entertainment on the lawn in front of the big screen. As the sun went down, giving us a spectacular sunset over Kirstenbosch Gardens, we

chatted and nibbled our supper - soon realising that there were a number of food and popcorn stall, and liquid refreshment vendors, if we needed a top up. It was a great relaxing evening under the stars!Galileo has a slick operation setting up the outdoor theatre at a number of interesting venues including the V&A waterfront, Hillcrest Wine Estate, Kelvin Grove, the Castle and Blaauwklippen to name a few. The tickets are R79 for entrance only and then there are add-ons such as the Galileo ground chair with a back support - very comfy and recommended; and a blanket for

those chilly evenings. You can book a VIP seat which reserves your space in a prime area on the lawn and includes popcorn and a drink. Galileo Open Air Cinema runs in summer from October to April. The venue opens a couple of hours before sunset, which is when the movie begins. By Sue Torr Director at Crue Invest

Reviewing one’s personal finances can be mammoth and cumbersome, resulting in important financial decisions delayed at great risk. Review your portfolio over a 12-month period using these guidelines:

JANUARY 2017: Ensure that your 2017 household budget is prepared on a spreadsheet. January is a great time to capture your first month’s expenditure, remembering that January can involve once-off, non-standard budget items which might skew your expenditure. Avoid being alarmed by these expenses.

FEBRUARY 2017: The 2016/2017 tax year ends on 28 February, and our advice is to aim at ensuring you take full advantage of the amount you can invest towards your retirement funding, which equates to 27.5% of your taxable income. This must be invested before the end of the tax-year. Liaise with your accountant and financial planner to invest appropriately at the correct levels.

MARCH 2017: March marks the start of the 2017/2018 tax-year and will be set in motion by the delivery of Minister Gordhan’s Budget Speech. He will announce changes to the personal tax rates and tables. At the same time, many employers implement salary increases with effect 1 March. Review your income protection benefit to ensure that you are protected at the correct level. Adjust investments towards retirement funding for maximum tax benefit.

APRIL 2017: With the advent of a new fiscal year, April presents an excellent opportunity to review inconspicuous expenditure such as cell phone contracts, bank charges, retail accounts and any subscriptions (online or other) that you have in place.

MAY/JUNE 2017: These months mark the start of the cooler winter season, which is an opportune time to re-assess one’s emergency funding. Many families deplete their medical savings accounts by mid-year, and our advice is to ensure that you have adequate emergency funding in place to survive whatever ailments you may be faced with over the winter period.

JULY/AUGUST 2017: July heralds the opening of the 2017/2018 tax season and tax-payers are strongly encouraged to begin the E-filing process as soon as possible. Update your E-filing profile, and request vital documents such as your IRP5/IT3(a) or (b) certificates, medical aid and RA certificates. Work towards submitting your returns well before the November deadline to ensure a timeous refund.

SEPTEMBER 2017: Financial Planning Week and National Wills Week fall in September. We recommend reviewing one’s savings and investments portfolios against the backdrop of your goals and objectives. Ask your financial planner and/or legal advisor to check your Will, Living Will and/or any Codicils to ensure these documents remain relevant to your wishes.

OCTOBER 2017: Although October is well-known as Breast Cancer Awareness month, it also includes awareness for diabetes, mental health illnesses, arthritis, osteoporosis and strokes, to name just a few. Review your severe illness cover. Our advice is to implement a level of cover that equates to your annual income.

NOVEMBER 2017: Take time to review your 2017 healthcare expenditure and any changes to you or your family’s health status, and then consult your healthcare advisor on how to select the most appropriate cover for the following year.

DECEMBER 2017: Before being caught up in the excitement of the festive season, give some thought as to how you should spend your annual bonus wisely. Avoid making impulse purchasing decisions by considering your financial commitments in the year ahead. Also give due consideration to your festive season budget, bearing in mind that your December salary, which is generally paid early, needs to last until the end of January.

We may not know what 2017 has in store for us personally or financially, but we can take prudent steps to plan effectively for that which we know lies ahead of us. Financial success doesn’t just happen. It is meticulously planned for.

COMMUNITY NEWSPINELANDERS

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN TOASTMASTERS IN 1992?“Coming out of hospital I lost all confidence in myself. You could say I became extremely introverted. I joined an NGO and at committee meetings I was so shy I could hardly say ‘boo’ to a goose. The NGO Chairman at that time was a gentleman by the name of Taffy Roberts. He was also a past District Governor for Toastmasters in South Africa. Taffy came over to me at one of our committee meetings, looked me straight in the eye and said ‘Lindsay  what you need is Toastmasters in your life.’ He challenged me to go to a Pinelands club meeting. I did… And the rest is history!”

HOW HAS BEING A TOASTMASTER CHANGED OR IMPACTED ON YOUR LIFE?    “Toastmasters was founded in  1924 by Ralph Smedley. Toastmasters International is a movement devoted to making

improved communication a worldwide reality. It is all about public speaking, but it is also SO much more. Apart from offering various communication and leadership modules, being a member also means experiencing camaraderie, encouragement and continuously being motivated by fellow Toastmasters – to be involved in this is absolutely wonderful!! This club helped me gain my confidence back. Being a Toastmaster has enabled me to hold my own in any situation that I find myself in.”

WHAT STANDS OUT FOR YOU AS A SIGNIFICANT MEMORY IN YOUR TOASTMASTERS JOURNEY?“I remember a public speaking moment so clearly. I was meant to speak at a church in Milnerton. But, as a result of my condition, I have a speech impediment. I felt very nervous and while presenting I felt my tongue get stuck on the roof of my mouth,

LINDSAY MEIHUIZEN

At 32 Lindsay Meihuizen was faced with a life-altering experience. Returning from a business trip to Greece, he was struck by a rare illness. His battle with Brainstem Encephilitis resulted in partial paralysis and left Lindsay wheelchair-bound. In an attempt to improve his confidence, he joined the local Toastmasters club in Pinelands in 1992. Lindsay hasn’t missed a single meeting since! Now, 24 years later, the club is incredibly proud and privileged to be celebrating with him in achieving his Distinguished Toastmaster award – the highest award achievable for any member of Toastmasters, worldwide.

DISTINGUISHED TOASTMASTER

my knees felt like jelly and the inside of my stomach was doing rock-n-roll. It was quite the learning experience!”According to Lindsay, who is now Vice President of Membership for Pinelands Toastmasters, the Distinguished Toastmaster award takes able-bodied individuals approximately 10 – 12 years to accomplish: “It has taken me 24 years. However, the encouragement along that journey has always been positive. What an amazing journey with a wonderful organization.”The Pinelands club celebrated this momentous occasion with Lindsay on the 3rd of November 2016.

At Toastmasters you will gain confidence in public speaking and become a stronger leader. Ask about visiting or membership at the club e-mail: [email protected]; or follow @PinelandsTM on twitter.

A FITTING CONTINUATION OF VETERINARY SERVICE FROM A PINELANDS FAMILY.The Leverton family moved to Pinelands 23 years ago, which means that sisters, Heather and Bronwyn have first hand experience of the thoroughness and care with which Dr Whitting-Jones cared for family pets. They respect his work ethic, the way he kept up to date with new medical information, and his dedication to clients and patients. The three new vets are very excited, and feel privileged to be continuing the service he started before any of them were even born!

HEATHER HILL (NEE LEVERTON)Heather graduated in 2001, and soon after, moved to Centurion with her husband, Simon - a born and bred Pinelander. After five years in a private practice in Johannesburg they returned to Pinelands and started their family. Matthew was born in 2008 and Jaime in 2010. Heather did part-time and locum work, allowing her the flexibility to have time with her children. Now that they are in Primary School it felt like the right time to take on a new venture,

and she is thrilled to have this opportunity to fulfil her dream of working in Pinelands.Heather's main love is working with dogs and cats, and she prefers medicine, rather than surgery. She will do the morning consultations so that she can play Mom’s taxi, do homework and have fun with the kids in the afternoon. Their family has the privilege of being owners of Pi, a fun, mischievous little cat who must be the most spoilt cat in Pinelands.

BRONWYN LEVERTON - THE SURGEONBronwyn: "I refute that Pi is the most spoiled cat, and so would Olive, Holly, Cat and Cadbury - my feline friends”. Bronwyn followed Heather into veterinary science. Aletta Mulder was a classmate and housemate of Bronwyn, and is now a colleague and friend. They qualified together in 2008, and neither wasted their time up in Gauteng for a second longer than they had to!Bronwyn started out at the Animal Anti- Cruelty League. After 3 years she moved to an afterhours clinic doing mostly

emergency work. Her time at both of these clinics was incredibly satisfying. For the past 2 years she has been based at Mowbray Veterinary Clinic. Her main passion is surgery, and in this Pinelands venture she will perform the surgeries and procedures when needed, whilst continuing to be based primarily at the Mowbray Clinic. She has a soft spot for injured or abandoned/orphaned little birds and squirrels, and any other small critters so feel free to bring in any of these creatures if you find them in need of care.

ALETTA MULDERAletta worked at the Citivet Monte Vista Clinic for 5 years, but has been doing locum work for the past 3 years. She, like Heather, is gifted in medicine, and hopes to specialise in internal medicine. Her other passions are cats (cats and more cats) and horses… though she keeps her involvement with horses strictly a hobby. Aletta will do the bulk of the afternoon consultations. Although consultations are by appointment, all emergencies will be accommodated and prioritised.

PINELANDS VILLAGE VETERINARY CLINICThe 3 vets aim to create their own identity and convey a ‘homely warmth’. The clinic continues to run from 22 Wisteria Avenue, and will be open from 08:00 to 18:00 on weekdays for sales. Consulting hours are extended from 08:30-12:30, and 16:00 to 18:00, by appointment. Saturday hours are 09:00 to 11:00. We look forward to welcoming you and yours to our clinic!Call 021 531 1663.

COMMUNITY NEWSPINELANDERS

Much loved and respected community veterinarian, Dr Whittington-Jones, has retired after 42 years of service to Pinelands and beyond, and is now enjoying time to relax, catch up on family time and enjoy his favourite hobbies. Three vets, Heather Hill, Bronwyn Leverton and Aletta Mulder, have taken over the practice, renamed "Pinelands Village Veterinary Clinic".

As parents we wish to give our children more than we had. The modern parent has more money to purchase goods for their children than their parents had. But by handing over the ‘power’ to our children, we are changing the hierarchy of the parent. Instead of parents using their authority because they know what’s best, they are focusing on making children happy and boosting their self-esteem.

CAREFUL FACILITATIONThe buzz word, even in teaching, is facilitating. Parents are ‘facilitating’ whatever their child wants to do, and are asking their four year old whether this is the school they wish to attend - instead of making the very important decision themselves. A parent needs to teach children right from wrong, develop their conscience, their self-control, the ability to lose, and to think of other people not only of themselves. In aiming to reach that goal, the parent is going to have to do a lot of things that a child won’t like and may not understand the reason why. Sometimes parents have to be the ‘horrible’ person in order to teach their children to make good choices. It is not the parents’ task to be their child’s friend as they are the adults. That friendship will develop by teaching your children to take on the role of being a good person and citizen and when they are adults, you will reap the benefits thereof.

FAMILY DISCUSSION TIMEAccording to some researchers, parents are spending more time with their children but for some reason the family meals, sitting around a table where conversation takes place, has practically disappeared. This is

where children learn about the world and how to discuss various topics. Parents are now spending more time transporting their children from one afternoon activity to the next, keeping their child busy or even worse, doing their work for them. Children for some reason, are no longer given chores at home so they don’t learn to be part of a team. And yet, with all of what we see as ‘we are doing it for our children’ has led to increased anxiety in children. They are more fragile in that they are no longer able to solve simple issues. They are less respectful of adults and the world around them and have become the generation needing, instead, instant gratification.

THE WORLD NEEDS TEAM PLAYERSSo, how do we change this to make them more aware of the world around them and make them a team player? Start with having family meals at home where you will be able to communicate with them as a parent and child. This is more important than anything else. Keep them at the table and have a conversation at their level but don’t let them ‘take over’ the conversation. It has been found that through conversations, children are able to verbalise their problems and will therefore have less anxiety.

VITUAL REALITY AND DEPRESSIONEnsure that your child does not have a television in their room. Control strictly, the time that they are allowed to watch or use their iPads, computers and know what they are doing. They may be quiet but one underestimates the power of the picture through television programmes, games and modern communication tools. This generation lives in a virtual world. It can happen that online ‘friends’ become more important than the friends that they see in person. They are losing the art of communication and spare time that used to be filled with hobbies and outside activities are no longer happening. Depression is on the increase as suddenly they realise that they are alone in the world and it seems to have passed them by. Children now occupy themselves playing the ‘arcade type games’ on their devices. They are unable to understand that what they ‘post’ online is there forever and no longer belongs to them. It is there for the world to see and will be there for years to come.

TEACHING HUMILITY AND CARINGTeach your children humility. Show them that they are not the most important

person in the world. They are not the ever popular ‘princess’ who is more important than those around them. It is the parents’ job to enable them to see the world from another angle, and that rejection or even more important failure, is part of learning. They cannot always win the “Snakes and ladders” game. Reality is that not everybody can receive a trophy. Instead, parents should be rewarding the process, the solving of issues; the evidence of caring for others to mention a few.

PARENTS & TEACHERS WORKING TOGETHERHave a strong relationship with your child’s teacher. One needs to remember that a child has three ‘faces’ that they show the world. One is to the parent, the second is to their friends and the third is to the teacher. If your child has done something at school, work with the teacher to instil lessons of honesty and integrity. It is hard for the parent to work through this as well but we need to remember that the school is also a safe place where the children are allowed to fail, but more importantly where they will learn consequences and in facing these, how they should change their behaviour enabling them to become stronger individuals.

LEAD BY EXAMPLEAnd lastly, remember that children are watching what we are doing all the time. If we behave poorly or make poor judgements, they will follow in our footsteps. Teach our children to be careful of alcohol, to have respect for adults, women and children. They need you as the parent to lead the way. You do not have to listen to the old adage of: “But everybody else is going or doing it”. Make your own reasonable decision for the sake of your children to keep them safe. It’s a tough world out there! They will thank you when they are adults.

Each year Viv Pullin arranges a personalised tour to Italy. Having lived there for many years in the 70's she knows the area particularly well. In 2016 the trip was shared by number of Pinelands families including moms, dads, daughters, sisters and other adults wishing to explore Italy.Starting in Rome the group enjoyed a quaint hotel centrally positioned near the Central station. The first 2 days were spent exploring and discovering the highlights of Rome using the Red Bus Tours. On Day 3 a luxury bus took the group to the Amalfi Coast. They arrived 5 hours later in magical Sorrento. Some families hired boats and set off to explore the island of Capri swimming in the perfectly clear turquoise sea. Others hired scooters to experience the cliffs of the Amalfi coast including Positano, Amalfi and Ravello .The evenings were spent enjoying the delights of the little pizzerias and local eateries. Some husbands took their wives for a romantic dinner in small hide aways.Having spent four glorious days in and around Sorrento, the bus headed off to Puglia which has still not been discovered by the general tourist and offers an authentic Italian experience. On the way to Puglia the bus stopped in Pompei for all to explore the ruins. Viv knows the Molfetta

Puglia areas very well and speaks fluent Italian. She is an excellent guide helping to explore the history and culture of the area. The group stayed in a small town called Monopoli where cars were hired for 7 days and everyone explored the area at their own pace .A visit to Putignano Mare is a highlight where one can see tall cliffs falling into the incredibly blue Adriatic sea. Alberobello with its Trulli architecture is a highlight as is Castellana Grotto which is an Unesco Heritage sight and has some of the best caves in the world. Lecce is known as Venice of the North and was also a win.A visit to the local markets in each town is always a must, especially for the women and children. Of course Gelato is the mouth watering delight for each day with flavours like nutella and even guava being a favourite .A unique tour which is always a hit!

1. Heat half of the oil over a medium heat in a large frying pan. Fry onions, garlic and ginger until soft. Add carrot and baby marrow and fry for a few minutes.

2. Stir in the spices and chilli and fry until aromatic. Add tomatoes, reduce heat and simmer for 5-10 minutes to thicken. Season with salt, lemon juice and pepper.

3. Make 6 openings in the sauce and divide the rest of the oil between these openings.

4. Crack an egg into each opening and simmer with a lid for 4-5 minutes or until the yolks are cooked to your preference.

5. Sprinkle with fresh herbs and serve on toast or with slices of avocado.

A homemade tomato sauce is one of those things that I often have in my freezer. It makes whipping up a variety of dishes in next to no time a breeze. You can even play with the seasonings and vary between spicy flavours, like this recipe, or use lots of fresh herbs for more of an Italian flair. The baby marrow and carrots bulk up the sauce, making it even more versatile. The carrots lend a naturally sweet flavour that is delicious with tomatoes, which means there is no need to add sugar to balance the acidity of the tomatoes. This sauce can be an accompaniment to sausages, steak, meatballs or any braaivleis and we love having it with ‘mieliepap and wors’ (a truly South African favourite, if you are familiar with it). Another way that I use this sauce is to

pour it over chicken portions and roast them in the oven or even simmer them in a saucepan. Add roasted veggies to quickly turn the sauce into a tasty one-pot supper. You can add any protein of your choice, from bacon to left-over meat or beans for a vegetarian version. Other veggies like brinjals or mushrooms are perfect with the baby marrow and carrots. Add a handful or two of chopped coriander or Italian parsley for extra flavour with any of these ideas. One of my favourite late-morning breakfasts or light meals is this spicy pan dish, with eggs gently simmered in the spicy sauce. Cook the eggs to your preference - I love the yolk still runny, oozing into the tomato sauce. Serve it on warm toast or just with thick slices of avocado for a filling, yet light meal.
