EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This document describes the activities carried out by VIRAL HEPATITIS ASSOCIATION OF
NIGERIA (VHAN) and submitted to FEDERAL MINISTRY OF HEALTH.
VIRAL HEPATITIS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (VHAN) is a registered NGO that is committed
to public health campaign in Nigeria especially in the area of viral and non-viral hepatitis. We
carried out and still carrying out medical research, Advocacy, free awareness
campaign/seminar, medical tests, provide care, encourage governmental policies and provision
of products for Hepatitis patient in Nigeria.
The purpose of the activities is to create awareness on the deadliness of hepatitis and also to
afford people the opportunity to get tested, know their status and get vaccinated and supported
treatment this in turn will lead to the gradual and subsequent eradication of hepatitis in Nigeria.
To achieve the set goals and objectives of the, VHAN employs the following strategies:
1. By Collaborating with WORLD HEPATITIS ALLIANCE, EXCELLENCE CHRISTIAN
ASSEMBLY; EXCELLENCE FOUNDATION INTERNATIONAL, DAVID-GENEVIC
HOSPITALS and WELL MEANING NIGERIANS ( individuals) who shared same
passion with us.
2. Volunteers’ participation.
3. Ensure effective publications, creation of awareness, medical screening, counseling and
distributions of ICE materials.
The total cost of the free medical outreaches so far conducted is One Million, Five Hundred
Thousand Naira (#1,500,000:00) only.
INTRODUCTION
The free medical outreaches have the following objectives:
1. Create free awareness about hepatitis.
2. Encourage people to get tested and know their status.
3. Encourage people who have a negative status to immediately go for vaccination.
4. Distribution of ICE materials
5. Counseling of Hepatitis B and C surface antigen reactive individuals
6. Reference for care and possible treatment to appropriate Health centers.
PROJECT OBJECTIVE
The project set objectives are:
1. To create massive awareness about hepatitis and its effect on Nigerian populace.
2. To promote and encourage people to get vaccinated, thereby reducing the spread of
hepatitis.
3. To reduce the socio-economic burden and impact of Viral and Non-Viral Hepatitis
transmission in Nigeria.
4. To encourage the positive patient access to Hepatitis treatment facility.
5. To massively distribute IEC materials to hundreds of thousands of adult individuals both
in English and local languages.
METHODOLOGY/FIELD WORK
DAY ONE: SATURDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER 2014 (TOTAL FILLING STATION, LUGBE,
ABUJA, FCT)
VHAN team comprising of members of staff of VHAN, E.F.I HEALTH INC., members of
EXCELLENCE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY and volunteers gathered at Total filling station, Lugbe
with all the required tools ranging from canopies, chairs, tables, hepatitis B and C test strips,
malaria test strips and got the venue ready in anticipation of the commencement of the
outreach.
The exercise commenced by 8:00am and came to a close by 12:00pm.
Seventy-four (74) people participated and were tested for hepatitis and malaria. They were also
counseled about hepatitis. Free anti- malaria drugs were also distributed immediately to those
tested positive to any of the plasmodium strains.
Nobody tested positive to Hepatitis and all the participants were encouraged to go and get
vaccinated.
It was a successful exercise.
DAY TWO: SATURDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER 2014 (AT TIMBER SHADE, LUGBE, FCT)
VHAN team comprising of members of staff of VHAN, E.F.I HEALTH INC., members of
EXCELLENCE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY and volunteers gathered at timber shade Lugbe, FCT
with all the required tools ranging from canopies, chairs, tables, hepatitis B and C test strips,
malaria test strips and got the venue ready in anticipation of the commencement of the
outreach. The exercise commenced by 8:00am and came to a close by 12:30pm.
One hundred and Seventy-seven (177) adults participated and were tested for hepatitis and
malaria. They were also counseled about hepatitis.
Four (4) people tested positive to hepatitis while One seventy-three (173) people tested
negative. Those who tested negative were encouraged to go and get vaccinated. Free anti-
malaria drugs were also distributed immediately to those tested positive to any of the
plasmodium strains.
It was a successful exercise.
DAY THREE: SATURDAY 4TH OCTOBER 2014 (FHA JUNCTION, LUGBE, ABUJA, FCT)
VHAN team comprising of members of staff of VHAN,E.F.I HEALTH INC., members of
EXCELLENCE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY and volunteers gathered at FHA junction, Lugbe, FCT
with all the required tools ranging from canopies, chairs, tables, hepatitis B and C test strips,
malaria test strips and got the venue ready in anticipation of the commencement of the
outreach. The exercise commenced by 8:00am and came to a close by 1:00pm.
One hundred and nine (109) people participated and got tested for hepatitis and malaria. They
were also counseled on hepatitis.
Thirteen people tested positive Hepatitis B and two people to Hepatitis C. The others tested
negative. Free anti- malaria drugs were also distributed immediately to those tested positive to
any of the plasmodium strains.
Those who tested negative were encouraged to go and get vaccinated.
It was a successful exercise.
DAY FOUR: SATURDAY 11TH OCTOBER 2014 (TUNDUN WADA, LUGBE, FCT)
VHAN team comprising of members of staff of VHAN, E.F.I HEALTH INC., members of
EXCELLENCE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY and volunteers gathered at Tundun wada Lugbe, FCT
with all the required tools ranging from canopies, chairs, tables, hepatitis B and C test strips,
malaria test strips and got the venue ready in anticipation of the commencement of the
outreach.
The exercise commenced by 8:00am and came to a close by 12:00pm.
Seventy-seven (77) people participated and got tested for hepatitis and malaria. They were also
counseled on hepatitis. Free anti- malaria drugs were also distributed immediately to those
tested positive to any of the plasmodium strains.
One person tested positive to Hepatitis while seventy-six people tested negative.
Those who tested negative were encouraged to go and get vaccinated.
It was a successful exercise.
DAY FIVE: WEDNESDAY 15TH OCTOBER 2014 (YELLOW PAGE JUNCTION, 2-2, KUBWA,
FCT)
VHAN team comprising of members of staff of VHAN, E.F.I HEALTH INC., members of
EXCELLENCE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY and volunteers gathered at Yellow page junction, 2-2,
Kubwa, FCT with all the required tools ranging from canopies, chairs, tables, hepatitis B and C
test strips, malaria test strips and got the venue ready in anticipation of the commencement of
the outreach.
The exercise commenced by 9:00am and came to a close by 12:00pm.
One hundred and fifty-two (152) people participated and got tested for hepatitis and malaria.
They were also counseled on hepatitis.
Nobody tested positive to hepatitis. Free anti- malaria drugs were also distributed immediately
to those tested positive to any of the plasmodium strains.
Those who tested negative were encouraged to go and get vaccinated.
It was a successful exercise.
DAY SIX: SATURDAY 18TH OCTOBER 2014 (NEW SITE, FHA, LUGBE, FCT)
VHAN team comprising of members of staff of VHAN, E.F.I HEALTH INC., members of
EXCELLENCE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY and volunteers gathered at new site, FHA, Lugbe, FCT
with all the required tools ranging from canopies, chairs, tables, hepatitis B and C test strips,
malaria test strips and got the venue ready in anticipation of the commencement of the
outreach.
The exercise commenced by 8:00am and came to a close by 12:00pm.
One hundred and thirty-six (136) people participated and got tested for hepatitis and malaria.
They were also counseled on hepatitis. Free anti- malaria drugs were also distributed
immediately to those tested positive to any of the plasmodium strains.
Ten people tested positive to hepatitis while One hundred twenty-six people tested negative.
Free anti- malaria drugs were also distributed immediately to those tested positive to any of the
plasmodium strains.
Those who tested negative were encouraged to go and get vaccinated.
It was a successful exercise.
DAY SEVEN: TUESDAY 21ST OCTOBER 2014 (MR BIGGS, PW, KUBWA, FCT)
VHAN team comprising of members of staff of VHAN, E.F.I HEALTH INC., members of
EXCELLENCE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY and volunteers gathered at Mr. Biggs, PW, Kubwa,
FCT with all the required tools ranging from canopies, chairs, tables, hepatitis B and C test
strips, malaria test strips and got the venue ready in anticipation of the commencement of the
outreach.
The exercise commenced by 8:30am and came to a close by 12:00pm.
Thirty-seven (37) people participated and got tested for hepatitis and malaria. They were also
counseled on hepatitis.
Nobody tested positive to hepatitis while thirty-seven people tested negative. Free anti- malaria
drugs were also distributed immediately to those tested positive to any of the plasmodium
strains.
Those who tested negative were encouraged to go and get vaccinated.
It was a successful exercise.
DAY EIGHT: SATURDAY 25TH OCTOBER 2014 (LUGBE ACROSS, LUGBE, FCT)
VHAN team comprising of members of staff of VHAN, E.F.I HEALTH INC., members of
EXCELLENCE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY and volunteers gathered at Lugbe across, Lugbe, FCT
with all the required tools ranging from canopies, chairs, tables, hepatitis B and C test strips,
malaria test strips and got the venue ready in anticipation of the commencement of the
outreach.
The exercise commenced by 8:00am and came to a close by 12:00pm.
Fifty-four (54) people participated and got tested for hepatitis and malaria. They were also
counseled on hepatitis.
Four people tested positive to hepatitis while fifty people tested negative. Free anti- malaria
drugs were also distributed immediately to those tested positive to any of the plasmodium
strains.
Those who tested negative were encouraged to go and get vaccinated.
It was a successful exercise.
DAY NINE: WEDNESDAY 29TH OCTOBER 2014 (KUBWA MARKET, KUBWA, FCT)
VHAN team comprising of members of staff of VHAN, E.F.I HEALTH INC., members of
EXCELLENCE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY and volunteers gathered at Kubwa market, Kubwa,
FCT with all the required tools ranging from canopies, chairs, tables, hepatitis B and C test
strips, malaria test strips and got the venue ready in anticipation of the commencement of the
outreach.
The exercise commenced by 9:00am and came to a close by 12:00pm.
Forty-two (42) people participated and got tested for hepatitis and malaria. They were also
counseled on hepatitis.
One person tested positive to hepatitis while forty-one people tested negative. Free anti- malaria
drugs were also distributed immediately to those tested positive to any of the plasmodium
strains.
Those who tested negative were encouraged to go and get vaccinated.
It was a successful exercise.
DAY TEN: SATURDAY 1ST NOVEMBER 2014 (CAR-WASH, LUGBE, FCT)
VHAN team comprising of members of staff of VHAN, E.F.I HEALTH INC., members of
EXCELLENCE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY and volunteers gathered at Car-wash, Lugbe, FCT
with all the required tools ranging from canopies, chairs, tables, hepatitis B and C test strips,
malaria test strips and got the venue ready in anticipation of the commencement of the
outreach.
The exercise commenced by 8:00am and came to a close by 12:00pm.
Ninety (90) people participated and got tested for hepatitis and malaria. They were also
counseled on hepatitis.
Five (5) people tested positive to hepatitis while Eighty-five (85) people tested negative. Free
anti- malaria drugs were also distributed immediately to those tested positive to any of the
plasmodium strains.
Those who tested negative were encouraged to go and get vaccinated.
It was a successful exercise.
DAY ELEVEN: SATURDAY 8TH NOVEMBER 2014 (LUGBE FOOTBALL FIELD)
VHAN team comprising of members of staff of VHAN, E.F.I HEALTH INC., members of
EXCELLENCE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY and volunteers gathered at Lugbe football field, Lugbe,
FCT with all the required tools ranging from canopies, chairs, tables, hepatitis B and C test
strips, malaria test strips and got the venue ready in anticipation of the commencement of the
outreach.
The exercise commenced by 8:00am and came to a close by 12:00pm.
Fifty- seven (57) people participated and got tested for hepatitis and malaria. They were also
counseled on hepatitis.
Eleven people tested positive to hepatitis while forty-six people tested negative.
Those who tested negative were encouraged to go and get vaccinated.
It was a successful exercise.
DAY TWELVE: SATURDAY 15TH NOVEMBER 2014 (CATENA INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY,
CHIKA, ABUJA, FCT)
VHAN team comprising of members of staff of VHAN, E.F.I HEALTH INC., members of
EXCELLENCE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY and volunteers gathered at Catena International
academy, Chika, Abuja, FCT with all the required tools ranging from canopies, chairs, tables,
hepatitis B and C test strips, malaria test strips and got the venue ready in anticipation of the
commencement of the outreach.
The exercise commenced by 8:00am and came to a close by 01:00pm.
One hundred and five (105) people participated and got tested for hepatitis and malaria. They
were also counseled on hepatitis.
Eleven people tested positive to hepatitis while Ninety-four people tested negative.
Those who tested negative were encouraged to go and get vaccinated.
It was a successful exercise.
DAY THIRTEEN: SATURDAY 22ND NOVEMBER 2014 (NEPA, FHA, LUGBE, ABUJA, FCT)
VHAN team comprising of members of staff of VHAN, E.F.I HEALTH INC., members of
EXCELLENCE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY and volunteers gathered at Nepa, FHA, Lugbe, Abuja,
FCT with all the required tools ranging from canopies, chairs, tables, hepatitis B and C test
strips, malaria test strips and got the venue ready in anticipation of the commencement of the
outreach.
The exercise commenced by 8:00am and came to a close by 12:00pm.
Fifty-five (55) people participated and got tested for hepatitis and malaria. They were also
counseled on hepatitis.
Six people tested positive to hepatitis while Forty-nine people tested negative.
Those who tested negative were encouraged to go and get vaccinated.
It was a successful exercise.
DAY FOURTEEN: SATURDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2014 (LEISURE HOTEL, LUGBE, ABUJA,
FCT)
VHAN team comprising of members of staff of VHAN, E.F.I HEALTH INC., members of
EXCELLENCE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY and volunteers gathered at Leisure hotel, Lugbe,
Abuja, FCT with all the required tools ranging from canopies, chairs, tables, hepatitis B and C
test strips, malaria test strips and got the venue ready in anticipation of the commencement of
the outreach.
The exercise commenced by 9:00am and came to a close by 12:00pm.
Thirty (30) people participated and got tested for hepatitis and malaria. They were also
counseled on hepatitis.
One person tested positive to hepatitis while Twenty-nine people tested negative.
Those who tested negative were encouraged to go and get vaccinated.
It was a successful exercise.
KEY ISSUES/ LESSONS LEARNT
1. A lot of adult men and women never heard about hepatitis before now.
2. A lot of people are ignorant about hepatitis and the deadly effect of the disease.
3. The few people, who have a little knowledge about hepatitis, are not aware that it can be
prevented through vaccination.
4. More awareness campaigns needs to be carried out.
CHALLENGES
1. Lack of mobility (4-wheel drive) to reach out to other places within Abuja metropolis and
environs.
2. Not enough skilled medical and paramedics professionals.
3. Insufficient fund to mobilize the personnel.
4. Insufficient testing materials and kits.
5. Insufficient anti-malaria drugs.
6. Non- availability of mosquito treated net for free distributions.
7. Lack of vaccines.
8. Transporting the mobile tent.
RECOMMENDATIONS/ AREAS OF NEED OF PARTNERSHIP
The following are the recommendations:
1. Follow up modalities should be put in place to encourage those who tested negative to
go and get vaccinated.
2. Volunteer efforts from skilled medical and paramedic professionals.
3. Means of mobility should be made available.
4. Sufficient fund should be made available.
5. Provision of anti-malaria drugs.
6. Provision of testing materials and kits.
7. Provision of treated mosquito nets.
8. Provision of vaccines.
9. Provision of mobile tents.
