ing Thursday, Feb. 1, each day featuresnominees and winners in a specific Acad-emy Awards category, starting with bestoriginal song ... and each evening will bereserved for those that actually won Os-cars, as with “Swing Time” and “Love Isa Many-Splendored Thing” on openingnight.“You want to keep it creative, but

sometimes, the best way to do it is just bycategory,” reasons BenMankiewicz, who has suc-ceeded the late Robert Os-borne as principal TCMhost. “We basically have atech week, with things likespecial effects and film ed-iting, and then we moveinto the main categories. We have two nights of bestdirector winners, and wemanaged to get best screen-play into three nights —because that involves bothadapted and original, plus acategory that the (MotionPicture) Academy doesn’thave anymore, best originalstory.“Then, we get into the

Movies in February, you’ll see Oscar win-ners.The channel’s annual “31 Days of

Oscar” event has taken various forms —running the selected films alphabetically, featuring the same actor in back-to-backattractions, etc. — but this year, the ap-proach is relatively straightforward. Start-

ing actor, then obviously a couple ofnights of best actress and best actor. Andwe conclude with seven nights of bestpictures.”Among the yearly highlights of “31

Days of Oscar” are the TCM premieresof certain titles. This time, those include“Braveheart,” “Dead Man Walking,”“There Will Be Blood” and the documen-tary “An Inconvenient Truth.”Mankiewicz deems such additions

“great. I always want to encourage TCMfans to expand their horizons — it’s notlike good movies stopped being made in1967 — but our mission is never going tochange. Our wheelhouse is always goingto be the ’30s, ’40s, ’50s and ’60s, butwhen we can bring in quality pictures thatwould meet anyone’s definition of a clas-sic movie, I think we should.”With the 90th Academy Awards slated

for March 4 on ABC, Mankiewicz notesthere’s no conflict since “31 Days ofOscar” ends the night before.“It’s what I imagine ESPN’s problem

is during the Super Bowl,” he muses ofnights when events with similar audienceappeal run opposite each other. “It’s like,‘Look, we know you’re watching theSuper Bowl. But in case you want towatch something else, we’ll put it on.’ Ifpeople want to watch us on March 4,that’s great, but we understand that a lotof TCM fans will be tuning into the Os-cars.”
