MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Happy Quarantining to all and I hope you are doing well during these trying days. Other than not being able to hold our Bi-Monthly meetings things haven’t changed too much for the FSAA. Patty Letchworth, who owns the old Carnegie Library, has purchased the beautiful John Cary-Weston House on the corner of Freemason and Botetourt and is remodeling it. Big plans for a personal fitness trainer and health Center. Zone 1 parking enforcement has been curtailed for a while as it has in all City Zones. More to follow on that. Steve Sigmon must be pleased at all of the new tree box refreshments I see all over the ‘hood. Thanks to all who have answered his call, especially on Bute and Freemason Streets. Still lots of work to do. Omar’s Carriage House and 411 are providing great service and menus for carry out. . . and Ya Ya has now joined them. Don’t forget to renew your membership! If you have no changes just put your name on the application with a check for $10 and drop it in the mail or my mail slot at 312 College Place, 23510. Jack Kavanaugh, President, [email protected] Beautification Committee: Landscaping & Tree Boxes!

As noted in prior newsletters and at meetings, City of Norfolk residents are responsible for maintaining the

sidewalks and tree boxes in front of their homes. Some of the boxes within our neighborhood need a facelift, so the FSAA Beautification Committee scheduled a tree box work-day but it was cancelled due COVID 19. We will reschedule this event.

Please remember, if you live within the historic district, major landscaping changes need to be approved by the City of Norfolk’s Architectural Review Board.

FSAA HISTORIC OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE

The Sargeant Memorial Collection is the region’s premier local history and genealogy library. The collection includes a number of photos and other materials that have been donated over the years. This photo is part of a series of aerial views of downtown Norfolk taken in 1964. Brambleton Avenue makes its way across the Hague and the Chrysler Museum can be seen at the water’s end. Bute Street with NOAA, the Jamestown, and other homes are visible as is the Botetourt Apartment Building. The Norfolk Boat Club, which is at the foot of Freemason Street, is at the bottom right. You can visit the online collection and get a glimpse of Norfolk’s past at: https://cdm15987.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/

BOARD ELECTIONS The FSAA nominating committee announced the following slate of candidates for election for a two-year term to the Board of Directors at the annual membership meeting on May 20, 2020. As we will not meet the month, we will defer the elections until September.

Jack Kavanaugh, Mike McCartney, Penny Powers, Sarah Whiting, and one vacancy – need nominee

Nominations will be taken from the floor at the meeting. Please note that condominium associations appoint their respective representatives and they are not subject to voting by the FSAA general membership. The Business Representative is appointed by the FSAA Board.

Volume 27 Number 3 May 2020 A time to focus on our physical AND mental health Hello neighbors, my name is Tricia York and I am the newest member to the FSAA Board representing the Freemason Place condos. I am a Health and Wellness Coach and a Personal Trainer and so I wanted to share some great info on staying healthy. Now more than ever it is important to make sure you stay active physically. Staying physically active and fit will help keep you mentally fit which is ever so important during our current mandated stay home period. Let’s start with six things you can do EVERY DAY to maintain your physical and mental health when isolating at home. Right now, start bringing movement into your most basic daily activities. For example, next time while watching TV get up and do some squats or stretches. Do heel raises while doing the dishes or side lunges while loading clothes into the dryer. Don’t underestimate the power of good old fashion movement like marching in place or doing twists and side steps while listening to your favorite music. Why not make it a dance party! Improvise for tools –they’re all around you. If you don’t have the proper equipment make do by using cans of food in a bag as weights. There are so many free videos on YouTube with varying levels of workouts for you to use. Just get online and search. Include physical activity into your daily routine and you will begin to see how much better you feel and how much it relieves anxiety and stress in your daily life. If possible, get out and walk, even if you have to start at just 15 minutes a day. Set goals for yourself, increasing your time as you go outside and take in fresh air and the healing power nature provides. We live in a great area to enjoy the outdoors. Go watch the sunset, the koi and flowers at the Pagoda, or the boats transiting up and down the river. If you are living alone, there is a healing power maintaining contact with others is important, and just seeing other people and saying hello is a huge help in doing this. We are all experiencing this trying time in our history and you are not alone. Stretch as much as you can. It is essential because it helps us maintain our flexibility. This is extremely important now and should be part of your daily routine even after COVID ends. You WILL see a difference in the way you feel because our muscles do atrophy as we age. To avoid this, we must continue to move…the saying USE IT OR LOSE IT is so true! Our anxiety is real and working on your breathing is very therapeutic. Deep breaths and long exhalations soothe the

mind and body and help heal us. The great part of this is there’s no special equipment needed to do it and you can do it whenever you want! As a Health and Wellness Coach and Personal Trainer I use all of these techniques with my clients. I am happy to offer complimentary health and wellness advice and exercise tips to help during this time. Please contact me at [email protected].

Bulk and Yard Waste Collections Resume FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 8, 2020 NORFOLK, VA – The City of Norfolk is resuming bulk and yard waste collections beginning the week of May 11. Collection will take place on the resident’s normal trash collection day. • Any scheduled pickups not collected, will be picked up the following week. If possible, remove items from the curb that were not collected. • Residents who set out bulk waste that has not been scheduled may receive a Notice of Violation. • As a reminder, SPSA’s Norfolk Transfer Station will return to normal operating hours this weekend. • Saturday: 8a-4p. 12p-4p reserved for Norfolk residents and Household Hazardous Waste 12p-4p. • Sunday: 12p-4p. • For COVID-19 city updates, monitor the FAQ located on Norfolk.gov

Sunset at Freemason Harbor!

"Some Things Change & Some Things Never Change"

Twenty-seven years ago, in the first edition of the FSAA newsletter, articles included renovations to the old Library building on W. Freemason Street; the Carriage House Restaurant reopening as the Carriage Inn under new management; and the former Preston School of Dance on the NW corner of W. Bute and Botetourt streets featured the grand opening of Undercover which specialized in slipcovers for furniture. Fast forward to 2020 and the library building has been repurposed to house offices and residences; the Carriage Inn is now Omar's Carriage House; and Undercover, after occupation by at least 3 other businesses, will reopen soon as the Virginia Cheese Company. The two constants are that neighborhood involvement has been encouraged and that FSAA focuses the majority of its efforts on dealing with the City in an effort to continue to improve the quality of life that we enjoy downtown.
