Tenant Farmers

French settlement was going very slow

New France was made up of states along the St. Lawrence River (Canada today)

Many settlers were brought in as tenant farmers who paid rent and worked for their lord for a set period each year

Relationship w/ Native Americans

The French usually got along well with Natives

Trappers and Missionaries lived close to Natives

French learned their language and respected their customs

Since French settlements grew so slowly, Natives did not view the French as a threat
