INTRODUCTION: Attention Getter: How many years have we all been at Penn State? Let’s rewind to the first day classes. INTRODUCTION:

Attention Getter: How many years have we all been at Penn State?Let’s rewind to the first day classes. The first day where you make your way around this campus without the help of anyone else. You walk from class to class, building to building, and don’t see one person of the 46,000 undergrads that you know. The transition to this large university is very sudden and overwhelming.

Audience Relation: Through this example, I hope to urge everyone to volunteer at some point during their time at Penn State.

Credibility: I was really overwhelmed with the size. It was a drastic change from high school. So I got involved as a freshman, last year as a team leader and this year as a team leader.

Thesis: Fresh START Day of Service is Penn State’s largest day of service that provides Freshman and upperclassman with a way to interact and to give back to the community.

Main Point Preview: Through getting involved with Fresh START I have learned that the gap needs bridged and barriers need torn down for new students, team leaders receive a great sense of satisfaction by introducing students to PSU service opportunities, and the impact of a few students will reach many others.

Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others? - Martin Luther King Jr.

BODY:

Transition: WHY IS THERE A NEED?

1. NEED: Gap needs bridged and barriers need torn down for new students.

a. There is a need to bridge this gap between both new and current Penn State students, as well as between the university and the community. If students are not introduced to Penn State by those older, they can often be overwhelmed and frustrated with the size.

b. I was really overwhelmed with the size. It was a drastic change from high school. So I got involved as a freshman, last year as a team leader and this year as a team leader.

Transition: WHAT IS THE SOLUTION & HOW WILL IS BENEFIT YOU?

MOTIVATIONAL SPEECH OUTLINE2. SATISFACTION: Team leaders receive a great sense of satisfaction by introducing

students to PSU service opportunities.

a. We will impact the lives of a group of younger students & aid service to hundreds of organizations. In the past we have helped organizations such as the American Red Cross,SPCA, Shaver's Creek Environmental Center, Second Mile, and T&D Cats.

b. The greatest service to yourself is service to others. By helping others you obtain a sense of self fulfillment.

c. BENEFITS: This includes providing a light breakfast before their service project and lunch after their service project - from businesses, private donors, corporations, and anyone else who is willing to contribute to a program that benefits an entire community

Transition: HOW WILL THIS AFFECT THE FUTURE?

3. VISUALIZATION: Impact the future lives of many.

a. Students will then continue to volunteer in service throughout their college careers and their lifetime.

b. Motto of "Get Rooted in Service" stems from the belief that service is lifelong and a stable commitment.

c. Last year approximately 95% of student participants strongly agreed that they planned to stay involved in community service after Fresh START.

Transition: WHAT CAN YOU DO NOW TO TAKE ACTION?

CONCLUSION:

Recap of Main Points: Fresh START bridges that gap and tears down barriers for new students, introduces students to PSU service opportunities, and impacts the lives of many.

Restate Thesis: Fresh START Day of Service is Penn State’s largest day of service that provides Freshmen and upperclassman with a way to interact and to give back to the community. I hope to urge everyone to volunteer at some point during their time at Penn State.

Closure: Become a Fresh START team leader & become aware of the volunteer opportunities at Penn State. (Show links online)

We all know what we are doing for others….but the real question is what are we going to do?
